Copenhagen Pastry

This place is excellent, reminds me of when I was a kid in Denmark.
Everything I have tried was awesome, the Kringle (the quintessential Danish pastry) could not have been more authentic if you had gone to a bakery in Copenhagen. The marzipan baked goods were also amazing, I drove about 120 miles from Laguna Nigel just to give them a try and it was well worth it.

Came here to buy a birthday cake and they don’t sell any cakes you need to order them in advance. The pastry was very limited during the week.
The one star is that I didn’t get to try their cakes.

There were no Danishes at Copenhagen. Just kidding. That was pretty much all they had. The selection was small with half-​filled display cases that begged for more sheet trays of goodies. They did not seem particularly well stocked for Sunday at 9:30A. I guess they work bankers hours instead of bakers hours.
With our limited selection, you could guess we ended up trying many Danishes and other layered pastries. Of the four we tried, the apple Danish was the best because of the air in the layers and the volume of apple filling. The Copenhagen pastry with custard was also good, but didn’t have the airiness. The chocolate Danish had only chocolate on top and barely any custard inside. The morning poppy roll was also lacking filling.
Both the Romkugle and Coconut Topper were soaked cakes rolled in a coating. The Romkugle was a tasty chocolate cake juiced in rum, but covered in low-​priced chocolate sprinkles. The Coconut Topper was a white cake coated with dried coconut on top and chocolate on the bottom.
The Almond Mazarin was a wedge cut from a tart shell. It was nicely filled with almonds, but oddly had shredded coconut — an unappealing filler.

Marzipan, Marzipan… and Marzipan!
Marzipan is my drug. Marzipan is my cure all. Marzipan is one of the best things in life. However, not all marzipan is made equally. Here, they do a really great job with it!
I was lucky enough to have visited when the owner was at this location. She is normally at the Culver City location. Does it make a difference? I guess not but everyone lives meeting the owner and this lady is a great person to talk with.
I stuck to just two marzipan and chocolate items on this trip including the hats. The owner knew I was going to be out all day and packaged my bakery items special so they would survive. There is nothing better than having a long terrible day and realizing you have something this good waiting for you at the end of it!
I love marzipan and Copenhagen is killing it with their version.

Not too much to choose from on a Saturday morning at 11 am but still able to pick up the necessities.
Flaky, buttery, light pastries.

Had it before, but forgot how it tasted. Opted to pick up some pastries since I was in the area. My preferences:
1. Copenhagen Pastry
2. Kringle
3. Morning Poppy
4. Coconut Top
5. Coffee Bread
Kringle & Coffee Bread both contains almond paste, but the coffee bread is too sweet. Coconut Too is pretty sweet too. It tasted good though (if you like coconut). Taste like coconut macaroon to me. Like the yellow cream (custard-​like filling) on top of Copenhagen Pastry. It was sweet, but acceptable. Morning Poppy end up to be a good choice for non-​sweets. Might get the Poppy Twist next time to compare.

Copenhagen Pastry is a clean little bakery tucked into a crowded Pasadena street. The pastries are yummy, but the selection seemed small. I can’t help but compare this to the old Carlsbad Danish Bakery (RIP) in San Diego county, which had great value and selection for the bakery.
I tried the chocolate, apple, and raspberry pastries and was impressed with the flaky textures and ratio of fruit/​chocolate to dough. Next time I’m in town, I know where to find a little bit of Denmark in SoCal.

The raspberry macaroon has got to be my favorite pastry of all time. Flakey, crispy crust, filled with almond paste, custard, and raspberry jam. It is such a delicate pastry packed with flavor. I only wish they sold it in the «line form» instead of individual pieces.
I was speaking with another customer while waiting in line and she told me that you can’t go wrong with any of their pastries. I bought a variety and I have to agree with her.
Just a note. This isn’t really a sit down bakery. There is a bench to sit down at, but it’s kind of awkward when there’s a line of people. Just grab your goodies to go and see if they survive the car ride home.
Also, the service is very nice. Since I had two bags of goodies and coffee, I was planning on making two trips to my car. I didn’t even realize that one of the sweet girls followed me out to my car with my other bag. They really make you feel valued as a customer. I can’t wait to come back!

I stumbled across Copenhagen Pastry this morning after dropping my roommate off at the Pasadena DMV a couple blocks away. I must say, this is my best accidental find in a while… maybe ever!
Anytime I want to express my love for my family or friends in pastry form, Porto’s has always been my go-​to spot. There’s plenty of variety, it’s delicious and it’s cheap. While Copenhagen Pastry may be much smaller and slightly more expensive (each item was $ 2 – 3), it wins in the taste category without question.
I tried a raspberry danish and it was the flakiest, freshest most delectable pastry I’ve ever had! The raspberry purée was tart and the perfect compliment to the sweet flaky dough of the danish. Thankfully, I only ordered one and ate it on the road because if I had access to more, I probably could have had five.
I will definitely be making excuses to trek out to east Pasadena more often… highly recommend this bakery!

Wonderful pastries! We tried the chocolate pastry, which was light and flaky — similar to a croissant with a dollop of ganache on top. It was supposed to be cream filled. Maybe they missed mine. Still delicious. We also tried the
and chocolatey with a touch of rum. I only gave 4 stars because it would be really nice if they had some seating inside or on the sidewalk.

We have driven by Copenhagen Bakery a few times and finally had the chance to drop in one morning.
The storefront is small and there’s so seating. They had samples for us to try, which was nice!
We got the coconut top (a mound of coconut with the bottom dipped in dark chocolate). As much as I like coconut, the amount of coconut pastry was just too much to enjoy.
I liked the Kringle the best because of the almond flavor.
My hubby got an apple Danish, which had great apple filling, but too much pastry for the filling for his liking. My half had more apple filling ;)
Maybe next time we come they won’t have so many goodies sold out.

Every single one of the pastries I got were delicious!
I ordered the Romkugle ($ 2.35): Chocolate rum ball. Inside has the consistency of a cake ball but more moist. The rum is subtle but gives it a great flavor because it goes well with the dark cocoa it is made of. Outside is covered with chocolate sprinkles. You can never go wrong with rum and dark chocolate all in one. Perfect size as well. Will satisfy your sweets craving without it being too sweet.
I love all their other pastries as well because a lot of them have almond flavors to them. I love almond everything.
The Raspberry almond macaroon was fantastic! I think one of my favorites out of all of them, even though they were all really good. It wasn’t too sweet. The textures of the flakes along with the crème on top was perfection. The flakiness of the pastry party was just the perfect amount of flakiness that makes it not soggy from the crème. Absolutely loved it!
The CranesCake for $ 2.35 seemed quite expensive to me for such a small pastry. It looked like literally the size of a thumb. a little bigger. That’s why I didn’t order one. It seems like a pretty popular choice though on Unilocal so maybe I will try it next time!

Their pastries are phenomenal! But coming in at 11am on a Saturday and seeing almost empty shelves made me sad. When I got to the cashier, I asked if they had any pastries cooking in the back that I could wait for, specifically the cinnamon roll. He went to the kitchen to check for me but unfortunately they were not making any more cinnamon rolls for the day. They were bringing out a new batch of apple danish, chocolate croissant, and kringle. I got one of each of those fresh batches. Each of the pastries shared the fluffy light texture, just the topping or filling made a difference in the flavor. $ 1.95 for each of them, not bad!
I guess I have to come back another day for the cinnamon roll! But hopefully it’s not sold out again by the time I get there.

I’ve had the pleasure of having a few of Copenhagen’s delicious pastries and I’m definitely won over! If you’ve never had Danish pastries, give this place a try — authentic Danish pastries at a reasonable price for the great quality of goods served!
I think my favorite that I’ve had so far is the Copenhagen. I love the chocolate/​frosting/​custard components of this flaky pastry. Perfectly paired with a good cuppa joe and you’ve got yourself a delicious morning snack!
The Napoleon Hat was interesting. Another best seller of theirs — almond paste cookie dough dipped in dark chocolate at the base of the «hat.» I’d say the chocolate dipping is a must on this pastry. Without it, it’s like eating plain dough of a sugar cookie — at least for me.
The Kranse Cake may not be for everyone, but I liked it. The almond paste leaves you with a chewy type of cake with a yummy and intense almond flavor. The chocolate dipping is an added plus. It is on the sweet side — again, great with a good cuppa joe!
Copenhagen you’ve won this dessert lover’s heart! Yum all around!

Copenhagen Pastry deserves all the rave reviews. We stopped by the bakery on our recent trip to Pasadena and ended up buying a big box of goodies!
What we ordered :
Kringle — Flaky pastry brushed with almond and sugar
Poppy Twist — Flaky bread brushed with poppy and sesame seeds
Coconut Top — Similar to coconut macaron
Napoleon Hat — Pastry with almond filling and chocolate base
Romkugle — Chocolate and rum truffle
Everything was amazing! My personal fave is the Napoleon Hat.
And they do offer samples of some of their best sellers which is great for those not familiar with Danish cuisine. We were offered samples of Kringle, Copenhagen, Poppy Twist and Coffee Bread.
All pastries and bread were around 2 $. Quite reasonable given the high quality.
Also loved the minimalistic chic décor of the bakery.
I will definitely recommend Copenhagen Pastry to those who like mildly sweet and light desserts!

My mum and I love this place! We’re a fan of light, flakey, and not too sweet pastries so Copenhagen Pastry is perfection. I hope they never leave Pasadena because their pastries are that divine. Best part? They’re inexpensive! Most pastries are less than $ 2 each. Might be easy to miss but just know that it is located right next to Big 5 Sporting Goods. Keep your eyes peeled for a wooden exterior. Street parking is available but when we went, we just parked in the Big 5 Sporting Goods lot since it wasn’t open yet. We came here at a little past 8am, so about an hour after they had just opened. We walked in and were immediately greeted by an abundance of freshly baked pastries. It made my heart happy and my tummy excited! I love their setup too. Such a simple interior. No tables or chairs so you can’t eat and linger here. They had many Danish pastries available but their most popular ones are the Kringle and the Copenhagen Pastry. The Kringle is a traditional Danish pastry with almond and sugar. It is flakey, light, and delicious. The Copenhagen has custard and also light and not too sweet. I also tried the Nougat Crown (almond, hazelnut, custard), Spandauer (almond paste and custard), Diamond (almond paste and custard), and Raspberry Macaroon. The Raspberry Macaroon is a definite favourite of mine. Oh man, all their pastries take me back to when I was still living in Germany! Marzipan/​almond everything galore! LOVE IT. I remember always getting a marzipan (almond) croissant every time I’m at the Hauptbahnhof (train station) and enjoying it on my train ride. :’) Ah, nostalgia.
My mum bought a Butter Cake ($ 11) to share with her coworkers. Think Danish pull-​apart bread but better. The Rye Bread looks amazing as well. Must get that next time! If you’re in the area, definitely stop by this bakery in Pasadena. You will not regret it.

I really do like the Copenhagen pastry ($ 1.95) here, flaky and not too sweet. They also had samples of other pastries as well.
First time I drove here, I nearly passed by it since I thought it would be bigger but they only have a few tables from what I remember. It’s near Big 5.

I have been visiting the Copenhagen Pastry over in Culver City for the last couple years and, while by no means is Pasadena a more convenient location for me to visit by distance or time, I do appreciate the more suburban location of the Pasadena store.
Same wonderful menu of pastries. As far as I can tell, the kringles are still as crisp and sweet as they are in Culver City, the sweet egg custard in the Copenhagens and Diamonds still made with the same care they are there in Culver City. Service is still excellent.
The only thing that I find confusing is that everytime I visit, early morning, late morning, mid-​afternoon, the place is empty. (Actually the same applies to the location in Culver City). Clearly, they are popular, based on the reviews. It’s also not like there are a glut of Danish bakeries in the area. I have no idea if I’m just ridiculously lucky to always avoid all the rushes or perhaps Copenhagen Pastry is not busy at all and is just the front for some crazy underworld mob business, but whatever the reason, the pastries are all delicious, the prices are super reasonable and the service is fantastic. Thanks for finally opening a location east of the 5, keep on keeping on, and I’ll be stopping by again real soon.
