History

Established in 2004.

After many years of serving the Phoenix community proudly, Ray Tanner Volvo transitioned to Tanner Motors. Chris Tanner realized that there was a true need in the Phoenix community for a trustworthy Volvo repair shop. He decided to open Tanner Motors in August of 2004 and has been servicing vehicles at better prices and with better service than the mega-​dealers of today. Chris brought the same work ethic and determination to serve the Phoenix Volvo community to his shop on 7th Street and Colter that his father introduced in him and his grandfather before him. Chris has also begun to build a dependable pre-​owned vehicle business founded on the same ethics and morals of Ray Tanner Volvo. In addition to the Volvo repair that Tanner is famous for, we also are now servicing BMW and Mini Cooper as well. Tanner Motors is proud to serve the Phoenix Volvo community in an ethical, responsible, and courteous way that is and always will be «Committed to Excellence».

At the young age of 11, Chris Tanner, son of Ray Tanner Jr., began working for his father during the summer as a parts runner and shop cleaner. Summer after summer, Chris returned to work for his father as either a parts runner or lot attendant. After graduating from Northern Arizona University, Chris went to work for his dad once again as a new and used car salesman. It was here that he helped to develop the first Phoenix area Volvo website for the dealership and was manager of the online sales department.

After many years of serving the Phoenix community proudly, Ray Tanner Volvo transitioned to Tanner Motors. Chris Tanner realized that there was a true need in the Phoenix community for a trustworthy Volvo repair shop. He decided to open Tanner Motors in August of 2004 and has been servicing vehicles at better prices and with better service than the mega-​dealers of today.

Had my car towed on Wednesday night, allowing the shop to start working on it first thing Thursday morning. I had it sent there because they came highly recommended. I called early Thursday and mentioned what had happen and why I needed it serviced. I spoke to Derrick. I got no response till Friday in which got a brief explanation on what they had found. They are closed on Saturday’s, so Monday I assumed they would have by than figured out my cars issue, but nothing new. Derrick mentioned that he would call me Monday before closing with more news, no call! Tuesday I called and had gotten the same story about my car that I gotten the Friday before. They couldn’t find anything new wrong with my car and wanted to keep an extra day, I declined and asked if my car was able to drive safely since they found nothing, I was assure it was ready. It was middle of the day Tuesday so I didn’t have a ride so I took and über. Picked up my car and not a block away from their shop my car did the exact same things I took it in for the previous week. They did absolutely nothing to my car In 3 days the had it, they also assured me it was ready to drive. I could have done more damage to my vehicle because they didn’t have a clue what was going on with my car. I had it towed once again to BMW, they had found a solution and proper diagnosis in a matter of hours. I guess going the cheap way always catches up to you. I will never take my car there again.

So I waited a while to write a review of this business to make sure my car does well after they have worked on it. It still roars like a lion! I have an old Jeep that is dear to my heart and I rarely trust anyone but myself to work on it. I need a mechanic that knows what’s up and understands that my car is my baby. The guys at Tanner Motors are the only mechanics I’ll let within 10ft of my car.
They understand my protective nature and work diligently and honestly. I have never trusted a mechanic so much! They are always so honest and if they can save you money they will!
They also refill R-​12 and from my research they are they only people that do

Tanner came to my rescue when I needed a quick oil change before a trip. I have Mini Cooper turbo. I’ve heard from other Mini owners horror stories of how they took their car into a shop that did not specialize in Mini Coopers and something was missed or done improperly. All I needed was an oil change… or soI thought. I called a few places recommended by Unilocal.They all were incredibly expensive. Then, I found Tanner. Chris and Derrick were beyond friendly. First, Chris knew how to spell my name correctly. A sign? Then, I had my oil changed, but something showed up on my diagnostic check. It was an item that had been replaced by the dealership where I bought my car. Apparently, it was faulty and the connection was as well. The dealership told me the «idiot light» was still on because they didn’t know how to reset it. Not true! The item was still broken. Thanks Tanner for catching it. I’m coming back.

This is my new favorite place to take my used Mini Cooper — Derek was completely consultative, the techs and mechanics are great, and they take the necessary time and «dude diligence» to find what’s wrong underneath the hood. My engine had to be decarbed, because it was filled with carbon deposits from years of indifference and taking the previously used vehicle to the wrong service places using cheap oil products. Also my spark plugs needed to be replaced and Derek pointed that out. Basically from an end-​to-​end view they took care of me, and I will be back for my struts work at a later time, because it was costly to do all the needed service work in one shot! Awesome work and great value for my Mini!

I LOVE this place. Coming from a daughter of a mechanic this place is honest, fair, communicative, and respectful of my time, all of which are hard to find when getting ones car fixed. Having been disappointed in a volvo mechanic service nearby, this is the only place I take my Volvo after they successfully diagnosed and corrected a long standing issue I was having for months. Derek is always very responsive, thorough in detail and explanation, and prioritizes repairs and costs. I am very appreciative of the mechanics and Derek at Tanner, and thankful they continue to take good care of my car after 1+ years now.

After trying out almost every Volvo repair shop in the Valley, I think I’ve found the best place to take my car, even if it takes almost an hour to get there from my home. From the minute you walk in Derrick is at the front desk and is warm and friendly. They aren’t overly aggressive with treatment recommendations for your car (unlike my unpleasant experiences at the Volvo dealership) and do a good job with their repairs. Tanner Motors also give nice little thank you gifts they’ll put inside your car after service, which is a nice touch. They focus on doing a job well done and good customer service at reasonable prices, so there’s no shuttle taking you around if your car is being fixed, free car washes, etc. The only thing that it is inconvenient is that it’s a little difficult to go anywhere entertaining if you need to get your car fixed and no one is taking you away for a couple hours, unless you walk a couple blocks to Biltmore Fashion Square or possibly another couple blocks to The Changing Hands bookstore. They do have a small waiting area with free wi-​fi but the waiting area is tiny. But those are minor inconveniences since I know I am getting great service from a repair shop that I trust at reasonable prices.

As a Volvo XC90 owner, I can promise this is the best choice for you. Every penny I spent at Tanner is worth. Derrick is a pretty nice guy and you will find all of them are reliable at the first visit. Really appreciate their decent job. BTW, I just went there for my headlight, they just took care of the bulbs and I was good to go. Seriously, I will drive back from LA for Tanner after I moved.

I did a drain and fill of transmission fluid and was concerned I had overfilled. I wasn’t sure if I was reading the dipstick correctly (at the right temperature of the transmission) so I wanted someone else to confirm my suspicion. I called and was able to bring the car by shortly thereafter for a free check. Nobody tried to get me to buy any other services though I asked about having the overfill pumped out (a fair price given). In the end I decided I could handle draining out the excess fluid and was on my way.
It was a pleasant experience and I’ll probably be back to have some bushings pressed in eventually.

Great Presentation! Great Experience!
Spoke with Derrick over the phone… he quoted me a price for a Transmission Flush for my 2001 Volvo. The result and service was wonderful. Great experience for my first time. And unlike most auto service… there was a «treat» inside my car!

I basically live on the other side of the world — the far west valley — where Happy Valley Rd ends, yet every time my Volvo needs service, I still make the trek all the way to Tanner Motors. I keep thinking, «Why do I drive all this way?» but then once I get there, I remember. The people here are so friendly and honest about everything. Not to mention, their prices are more reasonable than going to a Volvo dealership. Since the Volvo Scottsdale location closed and I switched to Sanderson Ford-​Volvo dealeriship/​service for awhile, I just always felt creeped out after going to those places. If they were friendly, it seemed somehow fake.
Here at Tanner Motors, Derreck (sorry if I mispelled your name and it should be Derek instead.) always explains everything so clearly. He works up at the front desk. If I want to see what’s going on with my car, I can just open the door to the garage and check on it. They will show you what’s going on and there’s never a feeling of being misled or talked into doing something that you’re not ready for. Even Chris’ service guys will come in and greet you and help explain things. It’s seldom that you get a chance to see what’s «behind the scenes.»
I love this independent Volvo shop! I will tell people over and over again to come here. I even referred a friend to their other place, Tanner Auto Body Shop, to get his car fixed. (Oh in case you were wondering, Tanner Body Shop can handle other cars than just Volvos). There’s just something great to be said about a locally owned family business that still believes in traditional customer service and at a good value!
