Sushi Nut

Recently did a DIY sushi night and sushinut delivered!
The only problem I had was I ordered too much food, but the packing and delivery of the fish was great. I ordered on a Wednesday night and was sent an email saying they wouldn’t ship out until Monday, because otherwise it risked getting stuck somewhere Sunday. Good to know they’re looking out for shipping possibilities when dealing with raw fish!
Now I just need to figure out what to do with an extra million fish eggs…

It’s not often that I give a 5 star review on anything. I give this a 5 star review. 5 stars is as good as it gets, and this is it. For the type of place it is, the quality is top notch from what I’ve seen.
I ordered tuna and salmon and the seaweed salad. I also ordered the soy wrap paper because personally i’m just not a fan of nori except in small doses.
Anyways, so about the review. Can we saw awesome? First thing I did was thaw it out and smell every inch of it. Nothing. No odor. I was fully prepared to be disappointed because I’m /​always/​disappointed. There’s a market here in my town who sells ‘sushi grade’ fish and I’m telling you, they have NOTHING on this company.
As soon as it was ready, i sliced into the fish expecting again to be disappointed, that I would find I don’t even know what you call it, muscle? whatever the white kind of tough parts running through like some pieces of fish have. Nothing like that. Just pure tuna, beautiful color… Nothing to work around, except the temptation to eat it all before you get it on the plate.
I had a friend over who doesn’t like the ‘idea’ of raw fish sushi that much so I had to mince some of the fish up and modify recipes so she would feel more comfortable for some rolls and it almost seemed a waste because it was that beautiful. I did end up leaving a few pieces sliced, and got to try a slice of each before my nephew, trying to help, spilled the bowl of the rest of it onto the floor :(
The seaweed salad was fantastic too by the way.
Anyways, I’ll definitely be ordering again and some different types. I’ll never order sushi from a restaurant again… Okay. Well. Maybe if I get really lazy.

I love sushi! But… my husband ordered escolar and yellowtail for me for Christmas. I couldn’t wait til Christmas to get into it. I had about a 7 oz portion of ‘super white tuna’ (escolar) a few nights ago and it was delicious! BUT… I was mortified the following day when there was an orange oily leakage from my tush. It lasted about 36 hours. I really thought I had a life threatening ailment until I googled my symptoms. Luckily, nothing life threatening or abnormal. Due to the wax esters in escolar this is a normal side effect in humans. Sure wish I had known this in advance. Limit your consumption to 3 oz or less to minimize this reaction.
As for the yellowtail, I was very disappointed. I know this is crazy to say but it was too fishy tasting. I was really excited for my dinner. I even made ‘sushi’ rice in attempt to create chirashi. Alas, it wasn’t very good.
If I ever decide to mail order sushi in the future, I might try the salmon (sake). For now though, I tried it and I’m not inclined to order mail order sushi again. :(

I was looking for another online seafood provider for our non-​traditional Thanksgiving sushi dinner this year after my regular go to site was out of stock on some items we wanted and found Sushi Nut.
I ordered the escolar, salmon, hamachi, tilapia, red snapper and mackerel. Total came out to about $ 120 and included free 3 day shipping. Since their distribution center is in Independence, MO and I’m in Kansas City we received our order the next business day.
Packaging: The fish was still solidly frozen with plenty of dry ice in a handy and reusable styrofoam cooler.
Escolar: Buttery, texture was excellent and delicious. We received three large individually packed loins in our order and still have one left. One of the vacuumed pack loins wasn’t vacuumed packed and had air in it but it didn’t seem to affect the quality of that loin.
Hamachi: It’s gigantic. We only used a third of it for our Thanksgiving dinner. Again, texture was excellent, flavorful and clean. The bloodline was small and easy to remove. Had to cut it up and rewrap the rest for another day.
Red Snapper: Firm, fresh and great texture again. Seemingly small portion but once sliced into sashimi it was plenty for 4 people… along with everything else.
Tilapia: Similar to the red snapper but had a bit more of a fishy smell. It was okay. I had it as a midnight snack the night before and may have had a few too many vodka tonics to truly appreciate it. It was fine. Don’t know if I would order it again.
Salmon: Eh. The only real disappointment. Decent sized portion. We only used half, but not as flavorful or fatty as from my other provider. After it was thawed the texture did seem to suffer a little.
The mackerel is still waiting to be eaten since I’m the only one that likes it but I’m sure it’ll be good it not great considering the rest of the items we received.
Very long story short. If you want to do your own sushi or sashimi and have a sharp knife order from Sushi Nut. You won’t be disappointed and will probably be wowed.

There aren’t many online distributors of real good quality seafood, especially if you want to make sashimi at home. Seeing as how I am in Davis which only has one small asian market (that only sells frozen sea food) and Sacramento is out of the way, I decided to try this company.
So how was the food? Pretty good, I was impressed! Since this all has to be shipped, it is frozen, but they flash freeze it super fresh supposedly. I ordered the ahi tuna and salmon sashimi, and both got to me within the 4-​day shipping period. The tuna was excellent and thawed out perfectly, although the salmon I received didn’t seem to be of the best quality. I’m not sure if it was just my order, but I got it a bit mushy, pale in color, and tasted less like fresh fish than what I could get at one of our sushi buffets here. Keep in mind that most sashimi found in restaurants IS frozen as well, so maybe this freezing process went wrong? We didn’t get sick at least, so thumbs up for health-​safety conscientiousness?
Some small things I did find that were less-​than what I had expected:
Firstly, an online order MUST be over $ 40. That sucked, because I had to buy more than I wanted to, and didn’t want to have more than I cared to eat before it went bad. Shipping is expensive, but that is to be expected for fast shipping so the fish doesn’t thaw.
Secondly, the shipping took the maximum amount of time. They said it would get to me in 1 – 4 business days (since they don’t ship over the weekend). It got to me on the 4^th day, which isn’t something to complain about, but a faster delivery would have been nice. Me, ordering in California, from a company who is based in California, getting a SEAFOOD PRODUCT from MISSOURI??? WTF I might as well be ordering burritos from Canada…
Third thing was that the shipping container was not as well insulated as I had hoped it would be. The dry ice did keep the fish frozen until the 4^th day, but instead of a styrofoam cooler displayed on the website, I got a cardboard box with some styrofoam lining.
TL;DR All in all, got a great product from a great company. Price was ok (to be expected for fresh seafood delivers)
Edit: Sooooo due to recent events I have changed my review to 5 stars. It seems that upon reading through these Unilocal reviews, the owner was dissatisfied with my 4 star review and asked what they could do to please me. Turns out there was some issue (not on their part directly) where the shipping company ran out of their normal cooler boxes. He apologized, explained how the company (pretty new, about a year or so old?) handles business, and gave me a refund on the salmon I had purchased. The reason I’m going through this edit is because of their absolutely AMAZING customer service. Like honestly, I was blown away by their sincerity and willingness to help out and get constructive feed-​back. I don’t care if it is because it is a «new» company that is trying to do what companies are supposed to do — suck up to their customers to build a strong fan base — but it definitely worked. As it should. So in my mind, because of this experience, customer service deserves 6 stars. Their service is phenomenal; my own mother didn’t treat me this way when I broke my arm when I was 10. Absolutely would recommend Sushi Nut to everyone.

I’ve been looking for a while for a place to buy sushi grade fish from & sushi nut appeared to be the best place I found.
So I went ahead and ordered Eel, Salmon, Escolar & Albacore, along with several other accompanying items. The prices were fair (considering sushi fish is expensive) and it’s much cheaper than eating at a restaurant. I received the items shipped next day & they were still completely frozen on dry ice.
I have yet to try everything, but what I have tried thus far (Salmon, Escolar & Albacore) has been delicious. I’ll have to admit though that making sushi for the first time is a complete pain. So I’ll have to work on my skills there, because my Nigiri looked like a complete mess & my roll attempt was just disastrous. I ended up just eating most of it as sashimi w/​some rice on the side… Guess I’ll have to sign up for a class.

I was looking at different sites to buy salmon roe and came upon this site. I liked that they offered free shipping on orders of 119 or more. The other sites did not offer this deal. I have not tried the soft shelled crab and salmon yet, but the salmon roe was excellent. Order came promptly and packaged nicely. I was a bit hesitant to order from a new company with very few reviews but I’ll definitely order from this site again.

Seriously the best online sushi purveyor that I’ve used. I can’t say enough good things about these guys. The seafood arrives still frozen and the dry ice is even intact, unlike other sushi sites I’ve bought from, so they really give a hoot about their customers. The soft shelled crab and hamachi are to die for. Serious thumbs up.
