In-Shape: Pittsburg

I love In-​Shape kind of expensive but if you talk to the manager he is a very nice guy and he will help you out. He waived my enrollment fee and was very friendly. I got a tote bag, a membership key, and don’t have to pay until the 1^st which is very nice go check them out

What does it take 2 get a better variety of classes? The Antioch location has step, hip-​hop & a few other classes that wud b gr8 here?

I’ve been a member of In-​Shape for about 2 years now. Recently I considered switching to 24hr and it was such a let down that I came running back.
The front desk staff is extremely friendly. Whether its signing you in when you’ve forgotten your club card, or handing you a small towel, or just saying have a nice day on your way… they never fail to disappoint.
The rest of the staff walking around the gym is also quite friendly, although I have never had to ask them for anything. There is one employee who walks around making sure to re-​rack weights that other leave lying around.
The facility is rather clean, except for the occasional mis-​hap here and there. The equipment is also very varied. Best time to go is around 10am or 11am unless you want to experience a very VERY crowded gym.
Lastly, this gym has wifi. It doesn’t work perfectly all the time, but it does work most of the time.

I’ve been a member at this location for over 3 years. This place is a necessary evil on many different levels. But I’ll break down the basics.
Front Desk Staff: Friendly and helpful.
Other Staff: Helpful when signing up, but when it comes to cancelling your membership that is a completely different story. Not that I have tried… yet. But I do know from close friends that have tried to cancel their memberships that it can be a hassle.
Equipment: Lacking in the «Women’s Area.» When equipment is broken be prepared to not use it for up to a month.
Bathrooms: The toilets are godawful. It’s like no one knows how to flush and everyone has explosive diarrhea. I find myself saying, «Why?! Dear God why!!!» on way too many occasions here. –_​-​’ The showers… well just wear flip flops and be prepared to see hair clogged up. Barf, I know.
Parking: Busy times are 7−10am and 5−8pm.
Availability: This place isn’t 24hrs.

My first experience at this inshape was interesting. This gym is huge. The cardio section is great and has plenty of treadmills and ellipticals. The free weight area is pretty small but ok since it wasn’t busy, I can only imagine how crowded it gets when it’s busy. Yikes ! The X room was nice and big, I didn’t get to check out the pool and steam room. They have racket ball rooms that looked like a lot of fun. The worst experience of this place was the showers, I took the coldest shower of my life. I hope I do not get sick because it was freezing cold. The girl at the front desk (Adrianna) was the best ! She checked me in and was courteous and friendly. Every question I asked her she had a cheerful response. I would definitely consider going back if they fix those showers though lol

At first this gym seems amazing but once you start going there daily you start seeing all the flaws… the stretching area always messy… staff unfriendly, always felt that when we asked for anything or had a question. we got the «why are you bothering me look» i guess being on their cell phones is more important then helping customers. BIGGEST concern I had was the housekeeping closet door where all the jugs dangerous cleaning chemicals are stored was always kept wide open. Its a huge dangerous problem when closet is within feet of the KIDS CLUB!!! Lots more issues but just wanted to name off a few of my biggest concerns. Im so happy i changed to UFC gym… Way more equipment, classes and staff is incredible and they genuinely care. well worth the extra $$ and drive… Not all bad at inshape there was one shining star named «Blanca». she always had a smile and always took the time to help and give my family inspiring motivation during our time there. this gym might work for some people but not for me and my family

I initially signed up with Inshape because I was new to the area and they matched my 24 hour monthly cost.
Over the past 6 months, this location has become increasingly gross.
It starts at the front door by the smell of sweat (as early as 8am), due to the poor ventilation system. Entering the locker room is no better. You can expect to see balls of hair rolling on the floor, dirty towels on/​under the counters and most recently, a trail of dried blood from the lockers to sinks. The steam room… let’s say I sit on a towel and clean my INDOOR flip flops before leaving the locker room with hot water.
The front staff is attentive when entering the front door. But if you need something (like cleaning up dried blood), good luck finding someone to assist. If they aren’t hiding in the offices, they’re missing in action.
Positive: the gym equipment is fully functional.
Sad to say, but I’m strongly considering changing locations (I have a single location membership) or another company.

So I actually like this gym very much because it has all the basic tools you need to workout. The staff are friendly and since I’ve been coming here for a long time they’ve now become good friends.
So why three stars you may ask? My problem with this place is the women’s workout area. I honestly feel it is a bit sexist.
So I understand and get the fact that some women are embarrassed and prefer to workout there for the comfort of not being judged by the men. But the equipment there is minimal, there are few weights and equipment unlike the free weights room that has a large inventory. I don’t go up there at all because there is seriously almost nothing useful up there. I think they could’ve added a squat rack and maybe also a bench rack too (if that’s what it’s called). And the free weights area is super small, maybe only like 5 people can workout at the same time there.
The machines are also not very useful, they have mostly ab and leg machines with a few arms.
Women lift heavy weight too, like I do and this area designed for women kind of makes it seems like women don’t need great equipment like the rest of the gym has.
If this area was redesigned I’d totally see this place as a great gym but for now my review is minimal.

If you’re a person that goes to the gym religiously you’re going to find out that there are certain characters that appear in every single facility. There is the «you’re doing it wrong» that will always offer unsolicited advice to anybody in the gym although he never exercises. There is the guy that yells or grunts loudly whenever he lifts weights. The guy with the enormous gym bag. The guy with the gallon jug of water. The guy with the wool cap on in the middle of August. And of course the one employee that knows and talks to everybody (In this case only if you’re a woman). Last night I had a run in with a group that I typically try to avoid: The Boy Band group. You know the group, 17 – 20 year old males that come in a pack and all look like they’ve been shot in the face with the contents of a tackle box and intricate and meticulously placed tattoos.
Well last night a boy band was occupying the selectorized incline chest press machine for almost an hour. Just lazily taking turns, taking selfies while they were taking turns, comparing side burns. As it was Monday, and I avoid training chest on Monday if I can help it, I was waiting for the machine that the boy band was monopolizing and honestly not even using. So I went about my workout in an improvised fashion after checking with my wife to see how the kids were and what they were having for dinner on my phone.
I’m doing some flyes and the leader singer of this boy band, who I see in this gym all the time attempting to lift too much weight and then allowing the stacks to crash and the machines to make a racket, approaches me with another member of the band. Before they can get a word out I say «I have two more sets» without taking my headphones off. Last thing I want to do is get involved with the boy band. The leader, wearing his standard uniform of wife beater with his hair puled back into a man pony tail motions for me to take my headphones off which I do. And he goes «Hey, my brothers over there want to know if you were taking pictures of them» I actually had no earthly idea how to respond so we just stared at each other for a bit before I said «What?»
And the backup singer goes «Yeah, we saw you over by the incline press with your phone out and the way you were holding it looked like you were taking pictures of us.»
My amusement quickly switched to rage. I explained «No, I was texting my wife to check on our kids while you guys played games on the incline press for an hour.» Lead singer says «Yeah, but the way you were holding your phone…» So I showed them my right hand which was mangled in Iraq in 2008 which makes it near impossible to hold my phone in any other way. And yet they continued to argue with me until I had to say «get the F#$k away from me before I put you both in a coma»
So the sauntered away all butt hurt and I spent the rest of my workout getting mean looks from a bunch of teenage ass clowns. And I’m certain that if I go back to this location and said Boy Band is present, I will no doubt have another confrontation because as a grown man, a former army captain, a father of two, and a doctor, I’m not about to pay for a gym membership to have teenage fools talk to me like I’m a moron and accuse me of taking pictures of teenage boys on the gym floor.
In this location I very rarely if ever see any staff on the floor. At the other In-​Shape locations there seems to always be an employee, not a trainer, but an employee like a porter on the floor.

5 stars for the nice and friendly employees who are always doing their best to help you out. The gym itself could use some updates here and there.

The first thing that captured my attention is NO CONTRACT, however, the best time to join is when the enrollment fees are $ 10. I joined this gym June 2015 and I absolutely love it. I do workouts on my own and the classes are pretty awesome. Some things as a member I would like to see is the sauna machine to not keep breaking down. It’s the one room that relaxes me after a good workout. Other then that, no complaints about the atmosphere or workers. Always have a positive attitude and always smiling.

If I need a quick workout I come here otherwise I love going to the one on Lone Tree. Yes there cleaning can get a little better but their always busy whenever I go in that its understandable why the locker looks a little messed up. The members here are very friendly especially in the weight room, people are always willing to spot me. Just like their members, their staff is pretty chill to.
But one that stocks out to me the most is Monica. I have a 13month old girl and a 7-​year-​old son. Am not going to lie, but I never left my kids with some I don’t know so when I dropped them off with her I tried to intimidate, after all I have alright to those are my kids. At the front desk you can see their childcare and I saw that she was on the floor with my daughter. I was able to do a full hour workout with no interruptions, and best part she was able to put Neil to sleep, which no can do.
So I decided to try it again and it so happened to be that she was there again. But this TIME, my son went right on in and asked Monica, what are we going to play today. Yeah forget about mom NO hugs or kisses, and my daughter went to without looking back at me. (Sad moment, but a peace of mind).
After my workout that day I had a small talk with Monica, and she is an amazing person, very full of life, and perky, she has a lot of different facial expression when she talks to you, which is really cute. I compare her to Ellen DeGeneres she’s funny and a sweet young lady.

My first membership at this gym was back in 2012 and I instantly fell in love with it. Fast forward 3 years later, and it’s more of an «eh» compared to the other In-​Shapes in the surrounding locations. The main reason I go to this gym is because it’s nostalgic. The beginning of my fitness journey started at this gym so it’s always refreshing and motivating to come here.
The staff are pretty friendly. I know a couple of people there from HS, so that may be why.
The locker room floors are ⁸⁄₁₀ of the time wet from people showering. 70% of the lockers always have locks on them. Even the standard «non-​reserved» ones.
The main room has about 15 – 20 machines that target specific muscle groups. The space to the right of it is full of treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bikes, and a couple other cardio machines. They have 9 TVs that you can plug your headphones into and watch/​listen while running/​biking/​whatever
The free-​weight room (my personal favorite) has a plethora of free weights. The dumbbells go up to 110lbs for the big guys who usually complain there’s not a heavy enough dumbbell for their shoulder presses. ;) There’s only one pulley machine which kind of sucks at times because on Monday (chest daaayyy) it’s super hard to use it for cable flies because someone is allllways on it.
There’s also only one squat rack, but thankfully a lot of people like to skip leg day, so the squat rack is usually open. (Unless a bimbo is curling in the squat rack. Please don’t do this.)
The pool is indoors and has 3 or four lanes I believe and it has an open area that is shallow and perfect for children (unlike Concord but I believe Antioch has a water slide!)
There’s an upstairs «woman» area that consists of treadmills, ellipticals and those stupid thigh machines. There’s also some free weights up there but they’re sporadic and usually missing. There’s also EZ curl bars up there and a few bosu balls.
Ultimately, this gym isn’t as good as the other In-​shapes (this one is a gold level) but it gets things done.

I went back and there were not supposed to be any kids in the pool. of course there were… and of course not one employee ever checked the pool area.

This place gets two stars instead of one, only because the facility is okay. However, when my husband and I were first starting to look at gyms in the area, the staff here seemed alright. We moved here a couple months ago and now that I am in my second trimester of pregnancy I wanted to get back into my gym routine that I had before we moved (or at least some version of it). The membership boy was nice, gave a lot of incorrect information (like that the hot tub was kept at 250 degrees) but he was really friendly and seemed nervous so we just let it go. When he told us that we had to get a membership that included all of the In-​Shape gyms I decided that I wanted to check out the other locations and some other gyms in the area before making my decision. He then said that maybe he could do just this gym and maybe it was still in the system… and basically that he was lying. Which is fine, maybe his boss told him to do that. So, I told him that we still wanted to see the other locations regardless and started heading out, that’s when another membership person chased us down yelling asking why we hadn’t gotten the membership and asking how much the original guy had quoted us. We re-​explained that we just wanted to see the other location and that we would be back if we wanted the membership to all of the gyms. I won’t go into the awkward interaction with the membership person at the Antioch location, who told us that we could lie to corporate to get a discount or something… which is actually rather insulting and beside the point because price wasn’t our issue, we just wanted to see the facility.
After returning to the Pittsburg location, Isaiah (the membership guy) got us signed up and asked if we wanted to do the «Fit-​Start». I told him that since I’m pregnant I just wanted to stick to my midwife and my prenatal yoga instructors suggestions/​instructions for exercise. He said that Mike (the trainer) would have some cool new ideas and stuff for me to do now that I am pregnant and can maybe show me some new moves that I can use. So I agreed to go to an appointment the next day. Isaiah was all smiles and said, «Great, see you tomorrow!» as we left.
The next day Isaiah awkwardly acted like he didn’t know who I was when I got there, the girl at the front desk that he was busy flirting with was very nice to me though and told me that Mike would be up soon. I won’t go into ALL of the aggravating details of this interaction, but Mike was vapid, rude, and completely detached from reality. I told him that I was pregnant right form the start of our meeting, and then I discovered that he didn’t know that there were any restrictions or differences for working out when someone’s pregnant. Anytime I answered one of his questions he looked above me, to the side of me, but never really in my eyes, which maybe explains why he never seemed to hear what I was saying. He gave me lots of suggestions for losing weight, which I told him repeatedly that I didn’t need since I was at a very healthy weight, even if I wasn’t pregnant and that I’m actually looking to gain weight going forward… you know… because I’m growing another human inside of me! Aside from the aggravating «conversation» with this boy, the four exercises he had me do were nothing new (as promised), one of them I probably shouldn’t have done but I’m pretty early in my second trimester so I’m sure it’s fine. And then at the end of him trying to sell me different packages and continuing to tell me that I need to lose weight, and fat and that I need to have fitness goals involving losing weight and fat… he reveals that he isn’t a trainer. He’s just the sales guy.
What a sad little system this gym has for it’s new members. If lying to people and putting them down to try to make a sale is all they’ve got, then I hope they go down in flames.

The cleanliness of this gym is non existent. Today,.while changing found a toe nail clipping near the dressing room area. Pubes on the toilet, towels everywhere. I am used to conditions like a third world country being that is my native country but this nonsense behooves me. I still continue to work out here though…#sad hire an outside cleaning company #cheapo

The GOOD: The facility is still fairly new with plenty of parking. Friendly staff on up to the management. They are pretty good about taking care/​repairing broken equipment.
The BAD:
1. Towels. When i first joined in 2011, towels were free. Then in 2013, the added $ 3 a month for towel service. However, a lot of members declined towel service but still get towels. They wait till after checking in and come back later and get a towel for free. What upsets me most is even after I pay for towel service, they still run out of towels at least once a week.
2. During peak hours they seem to be short staffed at the front desk. One person to answer phones, give towels, scan ID’s, sell snacks/​drinks and answer questions.
3. Jaccuzzi. I have brought to the attention of management several times about people not showering before entering the jaccuzzi. Members still enter bone dry like they are taking their own personal bath and it’s disgusting. Dirt and dry skin floating on top of the bubbles. I even made a suggestion to make the sign larger and more visible and still nothing. The first rule of the Jacuzzi is to shower first.
4. The sauna. I have brought to the attention of management that members are using the sauna without showering first. They cone straight from the weights or aerobics which is disgusting. Even worse is that members where their gym shoes inside. There used to be signs posted but this is a daily problem. Nobody patrols or enforces the rules in the back area. I once took a picture of 4 people in the sauna and showed the front desk. Another time i took a picture of a STAFF member using the sauna an even he was wearing his shoes.
5. Members using their phone while resting on equipment. This needs to be addressed while patrolling, but they don’t patrol.
6. Members working out with jeans on. This destroys the seats and it even states they must wear gym clothes to workout. Another rule not enforced.
This is where I workout due to proximity. This gym offers a lot but really needs to train it’s staff and more importantly, enforce it’s own rules before there becomes a health issue.

I love this gym. I live in Antioch/​Brentwood area but I go to this gym during work week. It has everything I need in terms of free weights. It gets packed like every gym after work but I go during my lunch hour. It has a women’s area, pool, sauna, classes, kids club, etc…
But be aware if you are planning to get a fitness trainer, I have seen this guy workout and has bad form and does not pay attention to clients during training.
Needs heavier plates and weights in general. I asked for a few more squat rack and they delivered one. Lol
But overall this gym is great.
