Min’s Jazzcuts

The reason why I came to Min’s barbershop is that her shop is near my school. Although Min is a decent, well-​educated and elegant lady, I don’t think she is a good barber who can handle Asian’s hair style.
EVERY TIME I told her I want a long layer, and EVERY TIME she gave me a short layer. Not every guy needs a short layer. Worse more, when I gave her a photo and asked her to cut like that, she promised that she would do so. Eventually it’s different!
But why I still come to her shop. Because sometimes she can make me look handsome, and every time we have a very happy conversation. And other local barbers never listen to what you say. But Min is a good listener.

Pretty decent for Asians.

The person is just plain rude. She was yelling at me for my asking what’s her average price for a hair length and texture like mine. wanting to estimate your cost prior to getting the service is something you should not ask for? She went on this rant about how she needs to see me in person to know the price without letting me putting a word in, and went on hang up the phone right after she finished. I don’t know how good you are, yet what you’re doing is basically shooing people away from your business.

I’ve been there for three times in past year! The lady is great!

Min is absolutely the best! I’ve always had trouble loving my haircuts after going to non-​asian salons (not the cheap kind either!). I decided to make a reservation with Min after reading a few reviews.
The day I went, I arrived early for my appointment, and Min sat me directly into the chair and went to work. We determined on cutting off about 7 inches (I had grown out my hair ridiculously long, and even after 7 inches it’s still considered by most standards to be «long hair»). Min’s techniques are different from what you’d typically see at other salons — I summed it up to be from her days as a hairstylist in S. Korea. She worked meticulously, slowly cutting back the length until perfection. By the time my appointment was finished, Min had spent 1 hr and 30 mins on me! Don’t expect SuperCuts prices here, but it’s not $ 100+ either. All in all, you’ll get your money’s worth here.
As mentioned by other reviews, do bring pictures to show her the style you want. She has an iPad set up with a range of styles as well if you don’t have any with you, for both men and women styles.
One thing to mention, she doesn’t wash your hair prior to your cut. Instead, she spritzes it generously throughout.

I drove an hour from another state just to get my haircut from Min and it was well worth it. As an Asian with thick coarse hair Min knew exactly how to deal with it. I showed her a picture of what I wanted and immediately she went to work. She took her time and used various tools to cut my hair to exactly what I was looking for. One pet peeve I have with getting my haircut at other places is leaving with tiny hairs in my collar, ears, or face but after she was done she grabbed a towel and wiped off ALL loose hairs. Hey I’m all about the little things! Thanks Min!
In short: located on corner of Atwood and Bates, men’s haircut was $ 28, parking is behind the shop (go down York Way alley to find it), and she takes cash or credit.

I love Min, such a sweetheart and amazing skills. I only let her cut my hair, no one else. And I live in MN now! You can always get a boost of self confidence too because she always tells you that you’re beautiful! Lol

This is my second time getting a haircut at Min’s– and I am just as satisfied.
Yes, yes the price is a little bit high (mine cost me $ 48 because I had longer hair)– but I got 20 likes within 20 minutes of posting my long layered bob on Facebook– I think we need to acknowledge the fact that she is really good with Asian hair.
I grew up in China and not even many Chinese barbers are that great with layers, she is fast and understanding. I am definitely going back there.

After I moved to Pittsburgh over a year ago, I dreaded getting a haircut from someone new. I would wait two or even three months, when I would be able to visit my family in my home state, just to get a haircut from my trusted cosmetologist, to whom I have gone for many years. I knew I wouldn’t be able to keep up with frequent commute and that my Asian hair wouldn’t withstand not getting a mow every month or so. So, my inevitable search for a hairdresser began.
I hopped from one barbershop and salon to another for months, each time not completely satisfied with the result. By happenstance, I found Min’s Jazzcuts as I was walking from Mad Mex to the bus stop on Forbes Avenue. I noticed a sign on the sidewalk that showed the name of the place along with Korean and Chinese characters. As a Korean-​American, I wondered if the stylist was also Korean. I noted the phone number and called later that day to make an appointment.
I came to my 11 a.m. appointment a few days later. She was already working on another client, so I sat on one of several couches in the waiting area. There is a collection of magazines that caters to both men and women. I spotted GQ, People, Vogue, ESPN, and several others. I picked up an issue of Consumer Reports and skimmed through it for several minutes before Min called out for me.
I sat down in the chair and she took a quick look at me. The first thing she said was how handsome I was and said that I look like a movie star. I was a little flabbergasted, but quickly smiled and thanked her. She smiled and laughed. She directed my attention to a monitor on the right that was connected to her iPad. The monitor showed a huge collection of pictures of male actors and models that shows the different hair styles, from very short to very long. I opted for a shorter hairstyle and she opened the collection of short hairstyles. She gave me the opportunity to select one that had the style I wanted. After choosing one, she quickly went to work.
While she worked on my hair, we had a nice conversation. She told me she came to Pittsburgh from South Korea over 20 years ago, and she has been working as a stylist since. I told her I’m also Korean, but was born and raised here in the U.S. Our conversation eventually moved to Korean-​related topics.
Once she finished, she showed me the back of head with a mirror and asked if everything was okay or if there was anything she could change. She did a fantastic job. The cut was very clean and looked great. It was night and day compared to the results from previous haircuts in Pittsburgh. I told her everything looked great. She offered to apply some wax on my hair. Why not? So, after a quick application of wax and styling, my hair looked awesome. She smiled and said I looked even more like a movie star.
I’ve gone to Min at least three times now and I’ve been completely satisfied each time. I would give this place ⁵⁄₅ stars, but because the price for a men’s haircut is a little steep ($ 28, not including tip), I deducted one star. Still, no other place in Pittsburgh beats Min’s JazzCuts, especially when it comes to cutting Asian hair like mine!

There are two places in Pittsburgh for Asian people to get a haircut. This is the better one.
I came at 5pm on a Thursday, place was empty so I didn’t have to wait.
The lady owner/​stylist was very receptive and attentive to the hair style I wanted. Sure, I wanted a standard Asian fade but she carefully loomed at the photos I had on my phone.
Here is a huge bonus though! She has a computer with tons of real photos of haircuts so you can scroll through and choose the one you want. And the pic will sit there in front of you while she cuts so you both know what the goal is.
She did a great job with texturizing and giving my basic haircut a little spiffiness to keep it looking fresh. I appreciated that. Some places don’t do that. I even wanted a little alteration from her style and she did it without hesitation. Great attitude! She also blended the side burns well and did good edging around the nape. Good work.
After the haircut she did some little 30 second head and neck massage which wasn’t bad, but really wasn’t anything to speak of either. No complaints.
Base Price for this men’s straight forward haircut was $ 28.
I give 4 stars because like all things Pittsburgh, it was pretty good, but not impressive (other than the photo album of haircuts). But given the cost of things in Pittsburgh, $ 28 for essentially a crew cut with no shampoo or massage is pretty steep. I get it. It’s Pittsburgh, there’s no competition. So I can’t really complain. So that’s why it’s 4 stars not 5. Great haircut, nice experience. This will be my new hair home for 4 years.

So I went in today for my first haircut in Pittsburgh. I started out with long hair up to my stomach, with no style whatsoever. I made an appointment on a Saturday at 4 PM. I told her that I wanted about an inch off with light layering and long bangs. She pulled up some pictures on her tablet and showed me the style she recommended. She then went to WORK.
She spritzed my hair and took her time combing and parting my hair, before grabbing a whole bunch and doing this crazy layering job with her razor. I’ve never seen this kind of technique. She basically grabbed and twisted my hair and went at the ends in this rapid motion while walking around me. It was like a tornado. Needless to say, it got the job done.
She was also very through and took her time. Most of the places I go to in NYC take 20 – 30 min tops, Min took about an hour with me. She also listened to what I wanted and gave great results. My hair is still long but with structured layers. She styled it so well with mousse and a hair dryer.
She’s incredibly sweet and gave the best compliments. She called me smart and beautiful. She even said that my face was what the Korean plastic surgeons model after. It was a ridiculous compliment but it really made my day.
The only drawback is that the price was a little higher than what I’m used to. I usually pay around 20 – 35 dollars for a haircut but this time I paid $ 45 for long hair. I mean it was a great haircut, but if it were 10 dollars cheaper that would really make this one of my best haircut experiences ever.

Definitely recommended especially for Asian’s haircut. The lady is so sweet :) She tells me a lot of lovely stories as she is doing the haircut lol. I go there every time since the first visit.

love her. not my haircut. Min is very nice and cheery and I loved that she took walk-​ins but she wrecked my hair.
What I told her I wanted: trim on my long hair with some reshaping around my face.
What I got: A bad 80’s style shag with some serious breakage an inch long at the top and back of my head — probably should have stopped her when she went nuts with the razor at the crown of my head.
My advice for anyone else with long hair — be very clear on what you want and don’t be afraid to speak up. I really wish I had.

Very nice lady, and her hair cut technique is awesome! She told me her story when coming to Pittsburgh 20 years ago and encouraged me to study hard :）She is so sweet!

Min’s amazing! She’s the sweetest person ever. When I first went in, she hit my legs and said «beautiful legs!» Haha she’s adorable. Her hair styling techniques are amazing too! The way she does it makes her even more professional. I love my new haircut. I definitely recommend going to her for Asian hair :)

The two times I was here, she cut more than I asked for. I asked for long layers, and she gave me short layers. I went in with hair that went to my armpits, and I asked for no more than an inch cut off, and to just clean up the ends a bit. I also said I’d like the hair in the front to be still be able to be tied back into a ponytail.
She thinned out my hair way more than I wanted, and the hair on the top of my head is now 3 inches long. It was originally at least 13 – 14 inches. I have poor eyesight, so I could not tell when she was cutting my hair. At the beginning, I had the feeling she was cutting my hair really short, so I emphasized a couple times LONG LAYERS. She said she knew and continued. :’(

The whole of the Asian community cuts their hair at Min’s so you better call a few days ahead to make a reservation because she gets booked solid! She is a one-​woman do-​it-​all show and she does it pretty darn well. I have not been disappointed with a single one of her cuts. Sometimes she asks me what I want and I usually just let her work her magic.
Things I love about Min’s — she always calls me «beautiful like diamond!», she tells my boyfriend to take me on vacation, she has pictures of dreamy korean drama stars on her wall as hair examples, and most importantly she knows Asian hair!

I get apprehensive about having my hair cut. I have a lot of thick hair, and not everyone can cut it well. I find myself holding my breath and clenching my hands as it’s cut, and I have to tell myself to not look nervous. More often than not, I dislike my haircut at first because the stylist styles it differently than I normally do, but I really liked my hair when I left Min’s today. That’s saying a lot!
I’ve only been in the ‘burgh for just over a month, so I’m really excited to have found a place to get my hair cut!
I made an appointment in the morning and came in in the afternoon. Over the hour that I was there, she received one phone call and two walk-​in inquiries. I commented that she was popular; she said the clients tell her that, but no, she just does her work. Cute!
Min was really thorough in her work. I brought a picture w/​me, which helped. I was a little concerned that she said she was going to make my hair «more beautiful» than the picture, and I didn’t always understand her English, but I’m pleased with the end result. I will gladly pay $ 35 (the price for medium length hair) for a great haircut!
