Fine Line Renovations

Fine Line renovated a 28-​year-​old, badly weathered wood deck and wrap-​around bench measuring apx. 250sf. They replaced all screws, sanded every square inch, pressure washed, applied semi-​transparent stain (as specified). We could not be more pleased with end result. I cannot imagine that it looked any better new, and guessing it did not. Fine Line does superior work, is highly professional, puts BST into job. Price was very fair, workers friendly, treated deck as though it were their own, were courteous and respectful, cleaned up meticulously.

Neglected deck to looking brand new in two days! I wish I had taken before and after photos, because the transformation is unbelievable. Our deck was seriously weathered and needed sanding and staining desperately. Richard came out to assess the decks condition and provide recommendations for refinishing. He offered us two great, and affordable, options. Manny and the team spent approximately two days total sanding and refinishing. He also made repairs to our lattice under the deck. Our deck is quite large. It wraps around one side and most of the back side of our home. We also have a good size deck for the front entryway and a back door. The team protected our house well during the process, so I don’t have any issues with stain on anything else. I had a handyman here to repair a gutter, and when he saw the deck he commented on how great it looks as well.
I highly recommend FLR for any refinishing. They did a fabulous job and were extremely easy to work with.

Richard is very knowledgeable and knows a lot about redwood decks. We have two 25 year old decks that were in need of some foundation repairs and resetting of boards that had come loose and overall restoration. Our decks came out looking like they were brand new, and we were super pleased with the fantastic job his crew did. They came when they said they would be at the house, informed me of every step they would take and communication with them was very easy. Richard’s bid was very competitive with the other bids we got, and we feel we got great value for the money. We were impressed with the Deck Groove tool that Richard has developed; it is very easy to use and cleans the grooves between the deck boards like magic. We would recommend Fine Line Renovations to others — this is the third time we have used them.

Yes, we had our decks done by Richard, Fine Line Renovations, The gentleman that did the work, were just that. Nice, worked very well with each other, cleaned up after each day, more than that did an terrific job. Very pleased with the project. I would rate it a ten. Our deck was installed in 1992 and had been serviced by Richard and his crew multiple times over the years. This year I was thinking ‘this is the year we have to replace’ the deck. Upon inspection Richard convinced me that the wood was still in really good shape and that a good sanding and staining would work wonders. His crew also bolted some wobbly 4x4s providing further stabilization. Upon completion, my wife and I are very happy with the finished result. Looks like a new deck! Can’t ask for more than that.

Manny and the crew did a great job of staining on deck and the fence. The job was done to full satisfaction. The crew was very professional and cautious around our plants. Richard provided us with color samples and did get back to us when we had questions. Though it did sometimes, quiet a few days before we heard back from Richard or Monica. We will use them again and recommend them to our neighbors.

Our redwood deck was decades old and in serious need of replacement. We were interested in using Timber Tech and Richard is one of the preferred contractors of this material. He came over and showed us computerized plans that would fit our needs and look good in our yard. He had several ideas and offered helpful suggestions for design and color use. Since we weren’t exactly sure what we wanted the final deck to look like, we appreciated his input and experience with design and building. Now that our deck is completed, we are very glad that we chose Fine Line Renovations — Richard and his team could not have been easier to work with and we had no problems or any «re-​dos» as you often have with contractors. We highly recommend this company for your deck repair or replacement.

Ultimately, we’re happy with the work and the look of our deck thanks to Manny, who another reviewer called a talented carpenter and I tend to agree. With that said, it was a struggle to work with the owners, Richard and Monica who seem to assume their customers are wrong, or even lying, when issues arise.
Initially, we weren’t pleased with the color of the first stain that we selected and it’s clear in their policy that payment is due regardless of our satisfaction with the color. As we later learned, due to the age of our redwood, the Cedar Semi-​Transparent stain turned our redwood deck orange and looked more like paint than stain.
This wasn’t the problem… in the process of the initial work, a wedding plate shattered inside our house due to the vibrations of the sanding (which saddened us but we didn’t blame Fine Line) and our new stainless steel BBQ was dented when it was returned to our deck. When I raised our concern about the dent with Richard, he wouldn’t accept accountability despite having taken a photo of the BBQ before the work showing there was no dent. He then tried to blame our kids and then another contractor who didn’t step a foot in our backyard. It’s thick steel on the BBQ and it was most likely an accident by one of the workers when placing it down, but Richard refused to accept that it might have been one of his employees. Did he think we were lying?
After a few accusatory messages back and forth, Richard promised to not «leave us hanging» with the color of the deck. A day later, Monica e-​mailed us and demanded full payment for the work, and I shared my conversation with Richard. Despite that, she quoted the terms and conditions of our contract and demanded the payment a second time.
Once the two of them talked and we finally reached a deal on stripping and re-​staining the deck, Manny returned and stripped the deck in a few hours. When we noticed a spot that had been missed, Manny returned and sanded it down and completed the work quickly, but Monica chose to e-​mail us and say that Manny called and said he didn’t need to do any additional work on the deck and that it was ready for staining (despite my wife watching Manny work on the deck), inferring again that we were lying to her.
Their blatant distrust made this experience a stressful one. I’m sure there are customers who have had positive experiences with Fine Line, but if you’re concerned about issue resolution, I would recommend finding a different contractor.

Richard at Fine Line did an absolutely beautiful job on our 10 year old deck at our home in Upper Rockridge Oakland. We had used another contractor to maintain the deck each year and the result was a deck that was looking older, darker and worse as time marched on. When Richard saw it his assessment was the contractor had applied way too much stain which destroyed the deck’s appearance.
Richard and his crew worked very hard for several days to remove the original stain, sand the deck twice and apply a new lighter stain. The results were astonishing! Friends asked if we had installed a new deck! Of special note, the crew cleaned sliding door glass and window glass that had gotten dirty from the power wash and stain removal.
I give Fine Line Renovations my highest recommendation. They did a fantastic job and Richard was a joy to deal with.

Fineline construction replaced a deck for me recently. The work quality was top notch. Manny is a skilled carpenter for sure. The work site was always tidy, they showed up exactly as scheduled and finished up so quickly, I was truly impressed.

I am absolutely thrilled!!! My deck was done by someone else — a «friend» — and Fine Line Renovations came out to make it right! It is beautiful, the men working were friendly and loved my little dogs, and I just could not be happier.
My deck is made of TimberTech, and they too, were remarkable folks to deal with. They stood behind their product, granted good will toward all renovations, and of course, introduced me to Fine Line Renovations!
