History
Established in 1870.
Point Arena Lighthouse began operation in 1870 after a series of shipwrecks off the point. The original tower, a 100′ brick-and-mortar structure, operated until the great earthquake of 1906. In 1908 the current tower reopened. At 115′ tall it was the first reinforced concrete lighthouse built in the U.S. Through the years various federal agencies oversaw operation of the lighthouse, including the Coast Guard, who managed the property until 1986 when it was turned over to the stewardship of the Point Arena Lighthouse Keepers, Inc. — a non-profit. In 2000 the lighthouse keepers were awarded ownership of the property and have maintained service of the grounds and buildings ever since. In 2008 the tower was restored and the First Order Fresnel Lens was relocated for display in the museum (located in the 1896 Fog Signal Building). Point Arena Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse on the west coast that you can climb to the top of.
Meet the Manager
Ty M.
Manager
Executive Director, Ty Moore, moved to Mendocino County in 2012 after 20 years in Reno, Nevada, bringing with him a background in higher education administration and college teaching.
