Specialties

In my music lessons, I incorporate creative exploration, insights from psychology, and cross-cultural perspectives. Along with common techniques and styles, I help students think critically about music, expression, and the learning process while getting in touch with their own personal experience of music.

History

Established in 1998.

I began teaching when still in high school while working at a local musical instrument shop. I expanded my teaching while pursuing my classical guitar degree. After a couple years touring with a full-time multi-style band, I moved to full-time teaching in 2005 doing a mix of private lessons and contracting through various community programs.

Over the course of my teaching, I’ve expanded my styles and continued my own personal growth through lots of reading, continued musical collaborations, and participating in various academic pursuits.

Moving from Michigan to Oregon in 2013 was a major shift. My time since the move has been spent partly on co-founding a non-profit organization dedicated to helping fund Free/Libre/Open software and cultural works (such as software for music study and freely shareable, open educational resources).

I’ve now worked with hundreds of students of all ages and levels and in many styles such as classical, flamenco, blues, rock, country, folk, and more.

Meet the Business Owner

Aaron W.

Business Owner

Born and raised in Ann Arbor, MI, I began music lessons at a young age with a teacher who emphasized creative exploration. Instead of just rote learning, I was encouraged to compose my own music, and that’s what got me hooked. After publishing three CDs of original music, getting a classical music degree, touring with a full-time rock band (that doubled as a barbershop quartet) and many years of teaching and independent study, I am now getting established in Portland.

On the side, I am a social entrepreneur as co-founder of an online fundraising system supporting creative work of all sorts that is released for free sharing and modification without traditional copyright restrictions.
