Advanced Construction and Repair

I hired Advanced Construction to do a kitchen renovation based on the Unilocal reviews. Randomly picking a contractor can be a huge gamble, and the standard 50% down can go down the drain if you get an unethical one. Jordan worked with us to switch out a huge kitchen with 4×4 cheap white tile countertops and backsplash. We went with Cambria Quartz countertops, and metallic glass backsplash. In addition to this, we had new modern tile and backsplash put in our guest bathroom. The price was definitely fair, the work turned out great, and it was all on budget.
What I liked about this process is that Jordan is not your typical middle man who quotes a job, subs everything out, and then collects the checks. He’s part of the entire process, doing much work himself, and when portions of the job are subbed out, he’s there to monitor quality and guide them. Daily cleanup is taken seriously by him, and he constantly communicates whats going on, wanting to make sure we are okay with it. The huge kitchen we had made the job a little tedious, but Advanced construction never stopped until their work was done. Without question, I’d use them again, or recommend them to family and friends.

Our tub’s grout and caulk were cracking and I needed them repaired. I researched this repair online, and all the DIY websites said you have to remove the old grout and caulk with a knife and then install new grout and caulk. I was able to get at some of the grout and applied new grout (but within two months the new grout looked like it was eroding), but I couldn’t budge the caulk. That’s when I knew I needed to call for help, so I called Advanced Construction and Repair.
Jordan came out pretty quickly after my call. He was a laid-​back, easy going guy, and he thought that our shower was in pretty good shape and that our cracking didn’t require the extensive repair the websites all suggested. That was a releif. That said, he just applied new layers of caulk and grout to the old layers. For this, which was about 30 minutes of his time and probably $ 20 in materials, he charged me $ 175. It seemed like a fair price at the time, but when I reflected on the very modest size of the job, it started to feel like I’d been overcharged.
Had the repair worked out, I, indeed, would’ve felt overcharged. After all, if all that was really needed was to recaulk and regrout the affected areas, I could’ve done the same repair myself at a fraction of the cost. The repair, however, did not take. The grout was fine, but the silicon caulk around the rim of the tub bubbled. I emailed a photo to Jordan. He was astonished and came back within a day to remove the new caulk and install a new caulk (I can’t remember what it’s called). That caulk didn’t solidify — it stayed spongy and could easily be pulled from the wall — I so I emailed Jordan again, and again he came back out a few days later. This time, he applied and dried a new layer of grout to the affected area, then applied more silicon caulk. That did the trick — problem solved. Jordan did not charge me for the additional visits to correct his work, which was very fair.
Had Jordan’s repair worked out the first time, I would’ve felt like I’d been overcharged. Given that he came out twice more and probably spent a total of four hours working on our tub, I now feel like I paid a more-​than fair price for his services.
I thought Jordan was a super nice, laid back, good natured guy, and I was impressed that he saw to our problems as quickly as he did. I’ll contact him again when we decide to remodel our bathroom to ask him for a quote, especially given how many Unilocalers have said that this is his forte.

Jordan did a wonderful job on our bathroom remodel. He was communicative and responsive, and finished the job on time and on budget– which is something that is VERY rare for contractor jobs!

I contacted Jordan for a bathroom repair and a very tight timeline (2 weeks!). I was getting my house ready for rent and he was quick to respond, quoted a much more reasonable price compared to another highly rated company, and was able to meet the deadline I needed. The work was done ahead of schedule, with great results. Jordan was professional, in good communication, and I will definitely use him as my «go to» from now on. Highly recommended!

We chose Advanced Construction and Repair based on the previous exceptional reviews that we read on Unilocal.Jordan and Bruce did a phenomenal job on our bathroom remodel. We gave Jordan an extremely tight timeline to start and finish this project as we needed it done before our baby arrived. He gave us a very fair bid on the project. They finished in 2 ½ weeks (a week early) and our bathroom looks amazing! We really could not be happier with the results.
Both Jordan and Bruce were always flexible and easy to communicate with. Jordan responded to all of our questions and concerns very quickly and was always willing to work through issues with us. They were both considerate in our home and always cleaned up at the end of the day. We would highly recommend them, and hope to use them again for future remodeling projects in our home.

Very happy with the quality of work at the price. Jordan was able to adjust to our schedule to get our small job done on time. He’s a nice guy and easy to work with.

First and foremost, I’ll say that Jordan and his employee Bruce did a great job for a good price.
Now to break down the details…
At first, I’ll admit that I was a little caught off guard in talking to Jordan. Here’s the reason why. I’m used to talking to contractors that when you start in on telling them about your work/​problem, then they will respond pretty quickly and start to tell you everything that they think about your project. Jordan didn’t do that. There was a pause after every time I would tell him something and I wasn’t used to it. The thing is, Jordan is actually listening to you and everything that you have to say before he thoughtfully responds. I realized that after he came out in person and each place I would show him something he would definitely pause and take a really good look at everything so that he’s paying attention to all the details. That’s remarkable and I really appreciated it once I got used to not being steamrolled like some other contractors might do.
After Jordan took a look at the work I had, he was able to fit me in to his schedule since my project was just a couple days worth of work even though he was booked out 4 weeks with bigger projects. He even was able to push up his start date a day which was great because it gives me more time to paint and prep before my carpet is going in. Every time, Jordan and his employee Bruce were there within probably 10 minutes of when they said they would be which is pretty spot on whenever you’re dealing with traffic coming across town.
The work was definitely done to my satisfaction and Jordan made sure to communicate expectations for the project accordingly. One of the things I wanted was for him to patch up some drywall and texture and he made sure to let me know that if I just want a patch that it won’t be seamless, but that it’ll be pretty damn close. In order to be seamless, you basically have to strip away all the existing stuff and redo the whole room which would obviously be a lot more cost and I didn’t need that level of perfection. Anyway, I’m definitely pleased with the result and I appreciate that Jordan set the expectations ahead of time.
The other thing that stood out is that when we were going over all the work that we had agreed to previously, Jordan asked if I wanted something else done that they would throw in since it would only take an extra 15 minutes. I said sure. Then Jordan asked if there was anything else and I pointed out a couple other small things that I had just been planning on doing myself. He threw those in as well for no additional charge. Overall it may have been an additional 45 minutes of time and he did it all for free since it was all going to fit in the two days he’d allotted for the work anyway. That was the icing on the cake.
Lastly, I’ll just throw this out there. I actually had my neighbor ask me how I «did it» when it came to finding good contractors. I asked him to clarify since I wanted to make sure I knew what «it» was. He said, «you find all these great people while you usually hear horror stories about contractors.» I told him that my secret was Unilocal.It has worked pretty well for me so far.

I had my garage hit by a truck and decided to let Jordan repair the damage. Everyone involved was courteous and got the job done. We had a few challenges with weather, but everything was made right and in the end we ended up with a garage that looks better than before it was hit. I would recommend Jordan and would not have a problem hiring him again.

My mom did some fairly big remodeling done on her place — took out this huge fireplace that was blocking one wall and installed windows to add more natural light. We called around for a few estimates and Advanced Construction was the most competitive. But, I must say their professionalism is what will make us a repeat customer (Jordan was always on-​time, quick reponse time, etc.) and actually listened to what my mom wanted instead of «recommending her best options». We highly recommend them.

We recently had an exterior door replaced by Jordan of Advanced construction & Repair. He was very helpful getting the dimensions and recommending places to buy the door. We used Parr lumber and the install went really quickly and the whole project came in well under the estimate. Jordan’s attention to detail early in the process saved us time and money later, I recommend him highly.

We were just starting to plan a kitchen remodel, and were considering taking out a wall. In order to determine whether or not it is load bearing, we gave Jordan a call to come check it out. He was able to come out within a day and provide his professional opinion. I was adamant that we pay him for his time, but he refused to accept it, saying it was just a quick visit. We will definitely be contacting him for our future needs.

We had a project recently that needed to get kicked off much faster than we had anticipated. Some family was coming into town, and phase 1 (removing carpets and installing laminate flooring) would make their stay much more pleasant.
Jordan’s work was exceptional from beginning to end. He was flexible setting up measuring dates, helped us order the floors we wanted, and had all the worked completed on time. The floors are clearly installed professionally; I could not have done as good of a job myself (the downstairs floors are proof of this).
He also took the time to fix our door that hadn’t closed correctly in quite a while. This was really going above and beyond, and certainly secured my business in the future. I look forward to working with him again.

**Note: Jordan has tried to make some of these things right, though not all of them. If you’re the type that can keep on a contractor every step of the way, he’d probably work just fine for you.
I’m sorry to say that you’ve led me astray, Unilocal.I don’t know how there are only 5-​star reviews of this place. Well, I do have an idea. If there’s any chance you’re going to use someone again that’s small and may just read their reviews, you don’t give them anything less. You just don’t review them. That was my initial plan (to just let it go and not do a review at all), but I was pushed over the edge.
The thing that pushed me over the edge is that I received three phone calls between 6pm last night and 9am this morning because I apparently wrote out the check for a hundred dollars less than it should have been. Of course, it’s fine that he called, but wait a day to call again. Don’t call three times when it’s not even 9am the next day yet. You know where I live, not calling you back in an hour or fifteen isn’t me trying to avoid you. The project was way more than a hundred dollars, if I had a problem paying it, I would have written it for a lot less than that.
The things that almost pushed me over the edge:
1. He measured poorly. He took some quick measurements and told me I’d need 85 square feet of tile for each bathroom (different sized bathrooms) because we wanted the tile to be diagonally laid. We changed our mind on tile and the new tile was best in a brick lay. It seems like this would mean we needed less tile, so I measured things myself and got new measurements and asked if we could order less. He said «maybe a couple square feet less if you’re able to get more right away if needed.» We ended up with 46 square feet left over (over 27% waste). Had it been 5−10%, I would have been perfectly happy.
2. I was downstairs when they were doing the demolition work, one of his employees shouted out something, sounding like he had made a mistake. I heard Jordan ask what was wrong. The employee said that he damaged the molding in the bathroom. I didn’t hear anything after that, but he never said anything to me about it and never fixed it. We have a chunk of molding ripped out of the corner of one of our bathrooms now. I would have made him fix it, but we’re going to paint and it just didn’t seem worth it.
3. The molding were put back very sloppily.
4. They took parts from the bathroom as it was before (screws, transition pieces) without asking if we wanted them.
5. There was poor communication throughout the project.
6. We asked him to replace the subfloor (it was part of the bid) where it had been water damaged. I assume he put down a new piece of plywood, but I could see the edges up against the shower and tub and it was clearly not replaced all the way to the edge as we had discussed.
7. The guy that actually did the tile work was the assistant of the first people we had quote the job (I’m only 95% sure on this). The actual tile work was the only thing that was truly done right. We should have just gone with them.
It wasn’t the worst experience in the world, but it was far from the best. We have an acceptable floor in the bathroom now, but I would never use him again. I typically disagree with Unilocal’s star descriptions. .. two stars seemed two harsh, but I wouldn’t say it was «A-​OK.» It was a «Meh. I’ve experienced better» experience in a three-​star review.

I’m adding Jordan from Advanced Construction and Repair to my list of people to enthusiastically recommend and rehire for work around our home. We hired Jordan to do some drywall repair to the ceiling in our nursery. When I asked him to come out and give us an estimate, I originally expected that we would need to replace the entire ceiling. However, he gave his honest opinion that he felt that that would be an unnecessary expense and instead gave a couple of estimates for varying degrees of repair and explained exactly what each would entail. I was so impressed with his honesty (he could have easily taken advantage of us and made quite a bit more money) that I hired him without hesitation.
Over the two days that he was at our house to do the repair, he was always on time, courteous, kind, and unobtrusive. He didn’t leave a mess and did a fabulous patch on our ceiling. In fact, we can’t tell at all where the old ceiling and new ceiling begins or ends! I know that this was a smaller job for him but he stuck to the exact estimate that he gave us and was always professional. If I’m ever in need of having a larger construction job done I will not hesitate to call him.
In other words; hire this guy! Thanks Jordan for the great job!

Jordan was on time and super professional when he came to give us an estimate. Although personal circumstances have forced us to hold off for now on starting our work, you can bet we will be calling Jordan when the time comes. He gave us specific quotes for the different types of work (electrical, sheetrock, etc.), and took the time to really figure out what would need to be done.

I sought bids for a project that I’d started but didn’t have time to finish and Jordan was one of the bidders. He was personable and considerate when he inspected the job and, based on this and price, we went with him for the project. Jordan’s workmanship is great. He paid attention to the details and consulted me whenever there was a decision to be made that affected the appearance or outcome of the project. He finished the job on time and within budget. I would hire him again — in fact i’ll probably hire him again as we get this house ready for sale.

I would re-​hire Jordan in a New York minute for my next remodeling project. He did an excellent job on a bathroom gut remodel and kitchen remodel. Not only was he very mindful of our budget and completed the work on schedule, he also gave us some useful referrals for finding quality, affordable materials — much better than anything you’d find at Home Cheapo! If you’re in the market for remodeling work, Advanced Construction and Repair should be the first company you call.

Jordan showed up when he said he would and was wonderful throughout the whole process (proposal to completion). I was amazed at how much progress I saw each day. H e did a fabulous job coordinating subcontractors and doing all he could for minimum upheaval and down time. He kept me updated and was always available to answer any questions. I wanted a contractor that was reliable and would do quality work at a reasonable price. Advanced Construction made this remodel a joy from start to finish!

Jordan did an awesome job finishing the drywall in a utility room for me. He was professional, showed up on time each morning, and did a quality thorough job. I’d highly recommend him!

When I received an email Sunday afternoon about an incident at the rental property in Portland, I panicked. Who do I call? What do I do? I’m in San Francisco. Do I have to run up to Portland and see what’s up? I didn’t have internet access either because the boyfriend’s modem had broken down, and we were waiting for a replacement.
I did a quick search on the Unilocal iPhone application and found Advanced Construction. It was hard to do much else on the app, and Unilocal Portland was a little lacking in reviews of contractors. So I just called the number of the first place I found with a five-​star review.
Jordan Barkhuff answered the phone and listened very patiently to my explanation of what happened. I was pretty stressed out and had been unable to reach any insurance agencies at the time. He offered to check on the property during his break to estimate the cost of damages. I followed up with him the following day, and he walked me through what he could see as far as damages and gave me a very rough estimate of the cost to repair everything.
While this review is not for actual construction or repair work performed because I ended up having to use a different person from the insurance company, I would definitely look to Advanced Construction for future work. The insurance company’s estimate was significantly higher than Jordan’s, but they had someone picked out.
Service really matters! Jordan was responsive and honest; I felt like I could trust him to fix the mess. I’m very grateful he was one of the folks I worked with through this ordeal, and let me tell you — IT WAS AN ORDEAL. I would recommend Advanced Construction in Portland.
