Charter Construction

As a community manager of 347 apartment homes in Lake Oswego, I can honestly say that I have not worked with a more professional and satisfactory contract company. Grayson has provided accurate and timely bids, as well as fair pricing, for exceptional work. My residents have actually come to the office for the sole purpose of complimenting the finished product, and I feel confident that their repairs have resolved the entire problem. I have had no trouble with change orders, as bids included the entire scope, and the jobs have been completed in a timely manner, with little to no follow up from myself. Billing is smooth, they met all my insurance and RMIS requirements without issue, and I am looking forward to providing them with additional contracts.

I have worked with Grayson Fidler on several projects. He is always professional, responsive, and wonderful to work with. I know if there is an issue on the job he always makes it right. Charter Construction is a company with integrity and always my first call in an emergency.

I really loved Charter! They did a great job on our condos and communicated on the progress so that I was always aware of what was going on. I noticed a couple of people gave them bad reviews. I think it was from the same project. I believe they are renters, so maybe didn’t have their email addresses on the homeowners list. We got emails and had meetings all the time! I never saw them at any of the meetings. I work in the creative field, and I know with that along with construction — everything always takes longer than you hope. Especially with construction, when you often find more issues than originally thought. I know that was the case with our project. That being said, they did complete the major portion of the project within the stated scope. We just had a few things left to do that we are waiting for better weather to finish. That was the HOA board’s decision, not Charters!

This joke of a company has been working on our condos for four months and they haven’t finished even one of the nine buildings in the complex.
They don’t show up for days at a times and when they are actually on site they spend the majority of the day bickering about how the most routine of jobs should completed.
They were supposed to install new windows in our unit, instead they took out our windows, then reinstalled the same old windows, only now they’re covered with silicon, caulk and scratches. We had they’re supervisor Greg up here to look at the horrible work that was done and didn’t get as much as an apology let alone confirmation that they screwed up.
If it was possible to give negative stars in a review that would be the correct rating for this company.
Update:
Six months later we still can’t open our windows or use our deck because they STILL haven’t finished our building.
Charter Construction’s horrible crew came in and replaced our wall unit air conditioner and left a ¼ inch gap in our wall between air conditioner and the window ceil. But they won’t do anything about it now because it’s «cosmetic». Seriously Charter? We can see light through this hole your left in our wall.
This is far and away the worst experience I’ve had with a construction company. If your HOA is considering this company please make sure your HOA board does their due diligence, I wish mine had.

Honestly, why don’t people read Unilocal reviews before hiring companies like this? I am convinced that each morning they cruise around town picking up people off the street and dropping them off at the work site with no direction or plan. Typically, there are 2 – 3 different guys pounding loudly each morning from 7−9am and then they are nowhere to be found. They have been working on our condos (sporadically) for 2.5 months and besides sealing our deck, I’m not quite sure what else they have done. I have called for a timeline and received no answer. They asked us to schedule an appointment with them to get our insulation inspected and they showed up 2.5 hours late.
They leave nails and other debris on the ground and we have had trash bags full of dirt laying in the middle of the sidewalk since day 1. They are completely unprofessional and I would strongly recommend that anyone pay the extra $$ for a reliable contractor.

Wow, I just read some of the reviews for Charter. But here is my take on the work they did for me. It was not as extensive as it was 2 or 3 years ago when we had a complete residing on all the homes in our association. The work this time was removing an iron railing and gate that had failed paint, which was due mainly to the application that was original finish. The managing company of our HOA contacted Charter to investigate and suggest a plan to resolve the issue. Grayson Fidler from Charter showed up the following week as was arranged by a prior phone call, he took pics of the railing and said he would contact our HOA with his recommendation, which was to strip the rail and gate prime and powder coat. A week or so later one of their crew showed up as planned by prearranged phone call and removed the the parts to send to the third party to powder coat. My original email was sent by me to our HOA management company on Aug 11 2015 in that email I expressed my problem with failed paint, this week on Monday Sep 14 Scott from Charter installed the gate and railing and the thing looks great! I’m really pleased with the work done it looks better then when it was 1^st installed in 2005. The whole process was handled the way any home owner would want with email updates from Grayson on a weekly basis. Thanks for a professional job and just outstanding workmanship.

If I could write a negative one I would. Like the previous reviewer said, I totally agree! They have worked on our apartment complex too and this has been the worst possible experience EVER! I too have had people scheduled to enter our apartment, they do not show up on the day promised! They come barging into YOUR HOME on another day, with NO apologies, nothing! They started in March on our unit, and they keep telling us two weeks, two weeks, two weeks until they are done. They took FOREVER to work on our deck, painting, siding, etc. They do not finish one building at a time, they hop from building to building, They were messy, food, wrappers, cups all over! We also had a rock outside that was sentimental (not valuable monetary). When these guys started working on our deck, the rock was gone, and nobody has taken any steps to get it back! Where did it go? Not to mention, the loud arguing amongst the workers, all day from 8am until 5pm, in Spanish. The workers come into our home, filthy, dirty and very unprofessional. Lisa Foster was almost impossible to reach, it’s like contacting the president of the US. Please, under no circumstances, save yourself a lot of heartache. They finally finished our unit in Late June. Now our door to the porch does not lock as it was replaced incorrectly. We had no screen doors on our windows for months so we can bake! Not to mention, letting BUGS in the house. The communication was HORRID. I try to give the benefit of the doubt to any company, but this company has provided the worst customer service ever. They have completely disrupted our lives, and all for naught! I am at a wits end and I am doing this as a last resort. Nearly three months of the noise, mess, lies about when it is going to be done, missing screens, poor communication, missing rock has taken its toll. A lot of this angst could have been avoided if steps were taken to avoid disruption in the lives of the residents. Treat us like you would like to be treated.

Charter Construction has been working on my apartment complex for the past year, fixing a range of issues from siding and windows to deck replacement. This company has been horrible in all aspects of the project, and I would never recommend them to anyone.
There were multiple instances of poor communication between the foreman, workers, and residents. Workers did not enter the house on the day we were told they would, then proceeded to enter the next day without giving any warning. As a result, we kept our pet secured for a whole day for nothing, then let him loose while workers were removing windows.
Communication has been very poor. The designated liaison for the project was impossible to reach. I’ve called five times over the course of the whole project, and every time I have conveniently been told by her receptionist that she is ‘on the other line’.
The construction staff is very messy and unprofessional. While walking through the apartment complex, I constantly find nails and other construction equipment strewn about. Workers also leave garbage all around the work site, sometimes over the weekend. While they worked on our deck, there were always soda bottles, pudding cups, and snack wrappers left on the deck after the workers left. Some of the trash wasn’t even cleaned up the next day, and persisted for multiple days before finally being thrown away.
Work has been very slow. We were forced to endure weeks of hot weather without the ability to open windows because of untimely return of the window screens despite the windows being done for weeks.
Unless you like trash, slow workers, and poor management, steer clear of this company.

If I could leave a more negative review I would. These guys laminated the hardwood floors on a vacant condo directly below us on a Friday, locked all the doors and windows over the entire weekend forcing US to breath the toxic fumes! Then on Monday I told them of the problem and asked that they leave the windows open. Of course they did not. On Wednesday (today) I insisted they leave the windows open. The guy then tells me they can’t because they left some tools in the condo and his boss won’t allow it. I then had to TELL him to take his tools out and leave the windows open or further action would be taken.
These guys DO NOT care about the health of other people. UNACCEPTABLE!

The company was brought in by an outside attorney that cold-​called one of the heads of the HOA Board. He was suckered into thinking we had a PEX piping issue. Now the entire complex is involved in a scam. Charter is in cahoots with this attorney’s office and another firm out of Seattle. They have no reputable sources in Portland and don’t belong here. Charter has also illegally failed to provide a contract to the homeowners or lien information. Both are mandated by the state but for some reason the corrupt board of directors did nothing and is actually supporting them. Do NOT use this scamming company for your repairs. They are also EXTREMELY overpriced and aren’t even doing the work themselves. They’ve hired several other companies to do the actual work for them.
