Cosmic Soda Pop & Candy Shop

Has a some interesting candy and soda pop choices to choose from. The owner seemed knowledgeable about the items as well and offered a few suggestions to try. I ended up with the Triple Cola, which was a little too strong for my tastes (but the owner mentioned that it had the strongest cola flavor of the group).

one of my fave shops in Portland! Great place to take the kids or a date for a custom-​mixed soda, candy or to grab bottles from over 300 in the cases. The owner is really nice and everyone she hires. Keep it up, Cosmic!

Cosmic is located in a wonderful part of the Sunnyside District. The district is away from Hawthorne but it has an endless amount of good shops. The shop is right on the street and it is glowing and welcoming.
I went inside and there is an endless amount of soda flavors. There’s also a huge amount of candy but it is not as much as they seem to imply.
They have an old-​fashioned soda fountain and they will make you any flavor of ice cream soda with nearly any kind of soda. They’ll also make milkshakes. Just for the interesting contrast of the lime and the vanilla ice cream, I had key lime pie ice cream soda. It was good. I also bought some pink Necco wafers. The soda was about $ 3.50 and the wafers were about $ 3 as well.
In the corner, there’s a small family table where you can play board games. There’s lots of cheap candies like single peanut butter cups for cents and more expensive candy. Lots of it can also be sold by the pound.
The staff were very friendly. This positively compares to Rocket Fizz because it’s slower paced and more relaxed. You can spend time and sit down while you’re at it. To popularize this concept of sitting down for candy as much as cocktails would take a greater genius than Wonka.
Cosmic is something good to check out if in close proximity.

First off, when a store is claiming to have a lot of retro candy, please have a lot of retro candy, not just a smattering of it. Take a look at the reviews and pics of Atomic Candy (
) from Denton, TX. This is what a retro candy shop should strive to be like. Every type of old school candy you can think of. Shirts, old metal lunch boxes, salt water taffy, many, many choices of bulk candy, higher end Mexican chocolate and some custom chocolates. You can stay busy in there for over an hour or more. I was in and out of Cosmic in less than 10 minutes, because there wasn’t much to hold my attention.
I’m not saying that they don’t have retro candy. They do, but it’s mostly on three round, stacked tables and that’s about it. They do have bulk candy, but it’s also limited.
A+ for the small label soda collection. C for the candy, and then you have ice cream shakes as well? When you strive to do one thing well, do it well, not two things that are sub par. The place was devoid of personality. Where’s the charm? The knick-​knacks? The gigantic Sugar Daddy or bacon flavored candy? The Kitch factor?
If you want ice cream you do Salt & Straw or you find an old style ice cream shop. Here’s another example of a shop that does it right. Beth Marie’s (
) Ice cream made in house, not as wild of flavors as S&S but great flavors nonetheless. Old time counter and charm. The place is full of history and they do it right.
Cosmic falls short and needs to decide what kind of place it wants to be. A candy shop or an ice cream shake shop. Do one of them right.

I love it here. It is so cool that they have a counter for ice cream shakes and sodas. Also it is CANDY MECCA. I hope this store stays here forever.

Despite my best efforts to refrain from sugar & soda, once in a while I need a fix. When I fall off that wagon, this is the spot. They have a great bottled soda collection, candy in bulk and candy brought in from Canada that you can’t find at the grocery store. Almost forgot: Ramblin’ Rod shrine is here. And for those of us that are true locals of a certain vintage, it’s sure to bring back memories of lounging in pj’s watching daily Bugs Bunny cartoons and smile contests! Also rotating local art on display, locally owned, small family business and friendly customer service. Gotta love that.

I took a trip down memory lane when this shop was called «Fizz» (a year ago). Not only do they carry Ginger Altoids, but I was able to purchase a Cock Cola (as in rooster). How many people can say that?!
The friend who told us about the shop and insisted we go was on a mission to buy Mars bars, since they are next to impossible to find in the states now (they’re made in Ireland). She loaded up with their large bars, even at a pricey $ 3 each.
My other friends bought candy by the pound, but I went for a bunch of different candy bars from my childhood (candy cigarettes, candy baseball chew etc). I also got a pack of purple gum — which I assumed was grape. I think the packaging called it «Lavender» flavored, but it should have been dubbed «Moth ball» or «Old man cologne». Regardless, I loved it! It became the pack I am willing to give my moochy friends that always bum gum off me. That’ll teach ‘um!
The store itself is designed like a colorful 50’s soda shop — so after making our candy purchases, we all sat down for a fountain soda. I got cream soda. Yum!
We probably hung out longer than the cashier would have liked — being a bunch of noisy girls on a huge sugar high — but we had a blast walking back in our past.

Cosmic is more of the family vibe, which is nice and all, but I that means I feel a little awkward as my 16 year old + friends get… rowdy, since we come in when the younger kids are just about to leave and the families are coming in to treat their little ones. Don’t get me wrong, its a great place, but its not the atmosphere for people like me and my friends.
There are like… five? six fridges full of glass bottles of amazing soda. Cat Piss, Cock Cola, bacon, cucumbers, pumpkin pie? Those are just some of the weird flavors. Its a nice variety in those fridges so I like to try and get at least one odd. But damn, their milkshakes are the bomb. The selection is decent, at least ten for the three categories, but I wish it was huge.
the candy selection is even bigger than the soda selection. But its ok, they have a nice deal, I think… half a pound bag of mixed candies, your choice.
Personally while my friends and I eat our candy and drink our sodas, we play yahtzee or Candy land on their comfy, circular couches, surrounded by local art they try to auction off.
Basically this place is family oriented, great variety, nice employees and decent pricing. They even give you a card for every ten regular sized sodas you get one free.

I had a ball in here!!! You name it, they have it! All of the old style candy that you (and your parents) enjoyed but you can’t find any more. Candy and bubblegum cigarettes! Gold rush gum pieces in the little bag with a string, fun dip, wax lips… awesome. They also have pieces of candy that you can get by the pound (swedish fish, the juice filled wax soda bottles). Finally… SODA!!! All kinds of delicious soda… at least 7 different kinds of just root beer!
Go in here and have a sugary wonderful time!

8PM and four more hours til our plane leaves. Oh what to do, what to do? It’s raining, cold, and we are in no mood to get sloshed.
This place was still open! At the bequest of PDX Unilocalers, we hit this place up for some airplane snacks/​candy. Reasonably priced, bulk serve-​yourself. Individual candies were exorbitantly priced, and I couldn’t justify buying gum for $ 1.25 (really?!). I got an egg cream ($ 2.50and played «Would You Rather?» with Francis before leaving. The employees were polite when spoken to, but seemed kind of wilted. I don’t blame them, they got an hour left of their shift on a Saturday night. At least they had a bathroom and a warm place to sit while we killed some time waiting on our flight.

Coolest candy shop /​soda fountain ever! I had been wanting to try a soda fountain place for some time, and I ran across this in a Unilocal email that I got. So I decided to go ahead and give it a try. The candy selection was amazing! They had candies that I haven’t seen in ages!!!
The soda fountain was great. Not only that but they had a huge selection of sodas in their fridges to choose from. I had the Egg Cream — and it was sooooo delicious!
The staff was nice and really helpful. 5 of us went into Fizz, and they were so chill and were not rude at all. Prices for both the soda and the candy were very reasonable!
This is definitely a place that I will be frequenting.

You will find plenty of sparkly colors in drinks and candies no doubt made desirable by Xcolor dye #Ynumber. That’s fine in moderation. They are not that poisonous. That’s why we love them, they are a mix of beauty and danger. Fizz has more candies than I know existed, themselves bright, their wrappers bright, or both. They have crazy array of regional sodas in every flavor, some even grown up flavors. They also have a soda fountain for the mixing of sodas and ice cream. Children have limited access by design to mind altering substances, they are primarily limited to sugar and cocoa. So Fizz is a solid specialized Portland small biz catering to your sweet yum factor and that of children with bright eyed desires.

This is not a Willy Wonka candy shop. No crazy overboard candyland kaleidoscope colored walls filled with umpa lumpas running around making chocolate and gum drop landscaping. The store is more simple and straight forward with candy, soda pop coolers and a fountain drink area.
Perusing the bins of candy uncovered some unique gems like the green apple gummy army men and intricate little chocolate rocks. There were a lot of classic boxed candy too, I had to go with the old school lineup of .25 cent boxes of lemonheads, cherry clans, johnny appleseeds and alexander the grapes. Nostalgia is hard to deny.
Only got a chance to look at the labels of soda pops in the cold coolers but it was an impressive collection. Worth an outing just to get a mixer six pack, could spend some time drinking through them all.
Finished the outing by sharing a milkshake with my son. The presentation wasn’t anything fancy just a straightforward pint glass with a very good milkshake inside topped with whipped cream.
Good time for me and good enough for a return trip.

I’m all for candies and other sweet stuff, and I must say, Fizz was a pretty nifty store to visit.
The worker was incredibly friendly, answering any questions as well as enganging in conversations. As for the candy, it was alright. I never experianced when some of the candies fist came out, so I couldn’t appreciate the hard to find candies and sodas.
However, they’re milkshakes are amazing. I ordered the chocolate milkshake with chocolate peanut butter cup flavoring. Oh my. It was so rich and decadent and oh so delicious. Despite my enjoyment ofnthe milkshake, it was VERY rich and I could have done with half the amount that was served.
Fizz was a nice place to visit on my run around town today.

I have officially eaten every candy bar in American stores, but thanks to Fizz I have much more to discover. Also I am a candy bar collector, I eat the candy and collect the memories. Everlasting Gobstoppers and oompah loompa pics are up on the walls as they should be, showing the shops love of the candy.
Fizz prides themselves in getting products that are new and hard to find here in the states. Which creates new finds all the time for us. From old school Zagnuts, Good News bars and Goo Goo Clusters. To England with Malteasers, Flake, Kinder, Mars, Crunchie and the Lion bar. Then off to Canada with Coffee Crisp, Smarties, Wunderbar and one of my favorites the Crispy Crunch, it’s like a Heath and Butterfinger made a baby that you would want to eat.
Sometimes in candy bar land special edition products go on the shelves for a bit then are gone forever. Cadbury Twisted, a cadbury egg candy bar, amazing and never again, Thingamajig, cocoa krispies instead of rice krispies, Fizz probably has the last of them. If you want to view paradise simply look around and view it anything you want to, do it wanta change the world there’s nothing to it.
Fizz is making the world a better place one candy bar at a time!

+/​-​Candy selection wasn’t as impressive as I hoped, nothing really that hard to find or unusual. I’m a candy junkie and I have had more fun at candy isle at Uwajimaya and in the weird candy bus on Hawthorne. But E for effort.

— Our little group was pretty excited about checking the place out and we all sorta scattered like cockroaches going «WHOA!» «DUUUUDE CHECK THIS OUT» «HOLY SHIT BALLS THEY HAVE THIS THING» while the staff sorta indifferently sneered at us. We even saddled on up to the soda fountain counter and all ordered different stuff but it seemed like they wanted us out the door sooner rather than later. Which I guess was kinda cool, nothing makes you feel like a bad ass punk rocker than making candy store people nervous (har har har).

I think I’m in love. Seriously, I would like to propose to Fizz with a sticky, delicious ring pop!
Have you been wondering where to get that amazing candy bar you used to love when you were a kid? Now you know. Wondering who has fantastic novelty bulk candy? Now you know. Wondering where to take your sweetheart on an old fashioned date, complete with soda fountain? Now you know, and can stick two straws in your amazing soda and sip to your heart’s content.
The soda fountain is part novelty, part delicious. They have some really interesting flavors (sea salted caramel anyone?) and some fabulous takes on old favorites (vanilla rootbeer ftw!). You can add phosphorus, toss in ice cream to make a float, or just drink it as-​is.
My favorite part has quickly become their overwhelming selection of bottled soda. The sheer numbers and variety boggle the mind! I don’t know how they’ve tracked down so many different types (both flavors and brands) but they told me they get new varieties all the time, so I will have to make weekly (or more) trips to add to my new collection of awesome soda bottles! My favorites so far are the Cock Cola (it’s a rooster you pervs) and Cock and Bull ginger beer. I’m also in love with my Dublin Dr. Pepper, so much that I had to go buy 4 more and get a holder thingy to make a complete 6-​pack. A girl’s gotta have a hobby, right?
My personal favorites among the non-​drinkables are the butter toffee covered peanuts, and the pumpkin seeds that are not so much gourmet, as they are nearly impossible to find. Oh the salty goodness!
So get in there, just remember not to hit the shop around the time the nearby school lets out. Not only will you be stuck in line behind hundreds of school kids (they do NOT let you cut, no matter how threateningly you look at them), you might need to pull out some ear plugs to make it through. Hmm, gummy ear plugs anyone?

Oh man. I love me some retro soda and root beer. The wife loves her some candy. Fizz takes care of both of us.
I don’t like having to scour high and low for specialty sodas and root beers. Sometimes Zupan’s has them, sometimes Fred Meyer, sometimes QFC. But I couldn’t really ever find the massive selection that places such as BevMo have of those sorts of things.
Then someone pointed out Fizz to me. Nice. All of the aforementioned fancypants drinks, plus tons of candy, and even a soda fountain on top of all that. I didn’t sample the milkshakes they had, but I did go with a spiced root beer. My only regret is I didn’t buy more!
They even have free WiFi, if you’re sticking around to lounge at their fountain. And the folks there were just so pleasant. Definitely glad to see this spot open up!

I’m pretty sure this place does not really exist. I’m pretty sure it is just a dream I had after a hard day at work.
They sell Bottle Caps. That was my favorite candy when I was a kid. I haven’t seen them in a supermarket in 20 years. They don’t make them any more, do they? It must have been a dream.
And the milkshake I remember buying… it might have been the thickest yet smoothest milkshake I ever had. My parents have told me that milkshakes were like that when they were kids, but that was 50 years ago. It had to have been a dream.
And the place itself was so warm and bright and clean and inviting… OMG…what if it’s not a dream? What if I’m…dead? Is Fizz what Heaven is like? I… I think it is. And I am stepping towards the light as fast as I can.
