Courtyard At Mt. Tabor

This is the WALMART of assisted living. I cannot speak for the independent living side, or the memory care, but for the assisted living portion, I leave them one star, for reasons that are well known to them.

It is so hard to write a review about this place, because it is so HORRIBLE. Please do not place a loved one here. The staff will bend over backwards when you tour the building, but the moment you move your loved one in that all changes. The staff was disrespectful to me and my parent, I had to speak up at a meeting and tell the staff not to speak as if my parent was not present, she was sitting right there. Theft is a HUGE problem, do not be deceived by the locked door, and locked drawer for valuables, all things of value were missing when we moved my parent (even her wedding ring) obviously many people have keys…

If you are thinking about the Assisted Living part of Courtyard at Mt. Tabor please be very careful with your choice. I was fooled. I have to many complaints to list and talk about. One: Do not let your parent take any thing of value with them. When my parent was kicked out, yes kicked out! thousands of dollars of jewelry was gone. Now you may think silly me for letting them take such items, but when you move them from their home, strip them from their independence you don’t want to take away everything. Treatment of my parent was not the best, food so so. Housekeeping and laundry they can’t seem to keep that straight. The staff is rude and really don’t care about who is paying their pay check «the folks living there» To the staff at Courtyard… I hope you are proud of yourself. People like you make me sick and this will come back to you some day, may it be sooner than later.

My mom has been in the Memory Care Unit for 1 and ½ years now, she has advanced dementia and is still active physically. This place is a blessing and the staff are wonderful and warm, thoughtful and kind with the residents. There is space for 20 residents and they range in abilities and capacities, my mom has been well taken care of and is clean and happy and cheerful when we visit each week. I like the location, right in the heart of Mt Tabor and the front area is very spacious and kept up very well. We are grateful for this center and what it provides, hard to get into sometimes but worth the wait.

I visited The Courtyard a year and a half ago, looking for options for my Mom. I had no knowledge of these facilities and was starting from scratch. Right from the beginning, I found the folks here warm, helpful and knowledgeable. I loved that the staff knew all the residents by name and everyone seemed happy. And the facility is gorgeous, events calendar full and varied. I brought Mom to visit six months later and she, too, fell in love. We visited several facilities but none offered the flexibility and «home» feeling that we got at Courtyard. Mom has now lived there for a month and couldn’t be happier. It is an easy place to make friends and be active – something that was important to both Mom and I, as she was moving from out of state. The terrific SE location is convenient to shopping, churches, medical facilities and even downtown. Each time I visit Mom, I’m so thankful that we found such a nice place for her retirement years!

Sure, the building is beautiful and the food is real food, but the administrative staff is pretty horrible.
My mother was approved to move in here prior to relocating to Portland. The marketing director was all sugar and smiles about everything, gave us her paperwork, worked out the payment details and set a move-​in schedule.
Everything suddenly changed when my mother got to Portland and met the marketing director in person. Unable to contain herself at my mother’s appearance, I realized right away that there might a problem. As soon as she walked in, the marketing director looked at my mother with disgust. My mother has had strokes, causing her to have a swollen, asymmetrical face and she also has cystic acne. She is from a rural state and dresses more casually. Somehow this woman works with people who need assistance in living but thinks they should all look like the people in their community brochures.
Still, she shows my mother her room choices, gets her all worked up about her new life in the community, and sits our family at a table, saying that someone will be over with paperwork and to take payment. This never happens. She comes at the end of our meal to inform us that the person who does move-​ins has «gone home», even though this same person she referred to only one day before as her own assistant. She asks us to come the next day, then calls me repeatedly that night, leaving no messages. I call her back? Nothing. She calls again in the morning to change the time.
We came at the time she requested but she was late for our appointment without apology, took our family to another room and told us that actually our mother could not move in for some mysterious reason to do with a «phone call from corporate» saying that our mother does not «meet the criteria». She would not elaborate on this, claiming ignorance. This is very interesting considering that they had no paperwork at all from us yet, so any information that they had about our mother had to be purely from this woman’s mouth and limited information. By limited information, I mean literally, almost nothing beyond her name.
It’s exceptionally clear to me that this woman passed judgment on my mother due to her appearance and strung us along and lead us on and wasted our time because she needed to get approval from her superiors to deny my mother housing and have them agree to cover her obvious lies and vague excuses. We not only never received any kind of call from the person who supposedly had this mysterious phone call from corporate, we never received any kind of apology for wasting three days of our lives, a furniture order, and a plane ticket on a room that my mother was denied for absolutely no articulated reason whatsoever.
A lot of these reviews were clearly written by employees and from fake profiles. I guess it’s better that we found out now that this is a crooked company before we had family living here. We were sold on the ambiance of this place, but companies can throw a lot of money into presentation and still be unscrupulous. Shame on this «community» for hiring dishonest, rude, inconsiderate, and judgmental people to work in a field that demands empathy, warmth, and understanding. I hope this woman loses her looks one day and that people look at her the way that she looked at my mother. Absolutely disgusting.
Bring your parents here if they want to have great amenities and have aged in a way that is cosmetically unoffensive, because otherwise the marketing director’s going to be rude, waste their time, and lead them on. What a terrible experience.

What a great concert series for charity over the summer. Very friendly staff and service with a safe setting.

I finally got my mom in here. its fabulous. she got a two bedroom, with a small back porch area. the dining room serves good food, with lots of variety, and the activities director does a great job with many things to offer. regular outings to safeway, walmart, fred meyer, churches, hair salons, and a moveable feast that comes to sell fresh vegetables. work out room, plenty of trails to hike, gardens to walk through, and in general? a staff that knows each person by name, making this home away from a HOME really over the top.
If you have a parent that is in need of assistance? you can move into independent apartments, you can move into assisted living, or memory care. they have it all. I am so impressed that when I park in the space that is designated «future resident»? I see myself here in the next 25 years, so I can enjoy my retirement with ease.
