So sorry they have closed, tried to stop by yesterday and saw that they were gone.

As a baker myself, I’ve never been a fan of scones, to bake OR eat. I find that the stuff to bread ratio is ultimately too low. In comes Dovetail bakery. Having moved into the neighborhood in mid December, I am now a scone convert, but I’m only hot for Dovetails scones. They way they are crafted is utterly amazing. The dough is sort of set up like a sandwich and each day there is a new filling. Even when I don’t think I’m going to love a certain variation, say the«Tempeh, olive, tomato» scone, Dovetail always surprises me. My husband came home from an early morning Dovetail run while I was dealing with a screaming baby only to tell me they are closing up shop in a matter of days :( So many Dovetail memories, one of which includes laboring at 4+ centimeters at the front counter while my husband decided on a pastry. Dovetail we will miss you. The only positive thing I can say about this is that maybe I will drop those last few pounds of baby weight by eliminating my morning pastry run.

Pretty good! My kids, husband and I checked it out today. I’m newly vegan and from Vantucket so we wanted to try a bunch of stuff. Here’s the lowdown –Coffee– reasonable –Red pepper basil scone– good taste but a tad dry.(bomb-tastic when dipped into the –biscuits and gravy though!) –Vanilla scone w/strawberry jam– Barely got a tiny taste, the kids munched it in a nanosecond –Carrot millet muffin– So moist and delicious. A must! –Peanut butter chocolate chip– rich and dense but yummy. –Biscuits and gravy– very yummy gravy with a hint of rosemary. The smokey tempeh rocked and don’t forget the braised greens which were my favorite part of the whole meal. –Cinnamon Bun– are you sure that’s vegan? Kind of unbelievable. So. Good. Also a must-have. –Blueberry muffin– I’m really full so this one will have to wait. Looks promising though! Everyone that worked there seemed friendly, smiling from the kitchen. My kids played with the toys and books and it was a really nice time we shared. A good Mother’s Day start.

I’m writing this from the perspective of a non-vegan, so I can get baked goods anywhere and little deli style stuff at lots of places. I thought though that the baked goods were only passable, I’ve had some really good vegan food and this place wasn’t even close. Maybe it was an off-day or they knew I was an outsider and gave me something old? The pumpkin chili was pretty tasty though and the only reason the place is getting 3 stars. If you’re vegan though, maybe disregard me. I’d like to say that all of the people who rated it highly can’t be wrong but my taste buds were not pleased. I was really looking forward to this place, so maybe that was my downfall. Sometimes I build things up too much. Give it a shot, I probably just ended up with the one bad batch they made. No one is perfect and everyone else loves them to pieces.

This is THEBEST vegan bakery in Portland. Hands down. Forget Sweet Pea with their super cool mini mall status, forget Back to Eden with their fear of gluten, and forget Black Sheep Bakery(even though their logo is a cute little black sheep). Dovetail is what baked goods are supposed to taste like. Most highly recommended are: any iced/jam scone, any jam filled muffin, pecan sticky buns, «chicken» and biscuit stew, german chocolate cake, and well. everything else is probably great too. Plus this bakery is run by one of the nicest women you will ever meet. Give her your business and you will not be disappointed.

This place. It’s terrific. It has a lovely old-fashioned vibe, in both the décor and the baked goods, and the owner is genuinely nice. Everything is so good. But if I had to pick some favorites, I would say: vanilla bean/jam scone, ANY cookie, salted caramel vanilla bean cake, vanilla bean pear tart… ok, you get it, I live for vanilla bean. But seriously, order anything and it will not disappoint.

I honestly intended to try just 1 – 2 products and write my review, but I’ve quickly learned that I have zero willpower when it comes to sexy-looking baked goods and pastries. So it should be no surprise that I went in here with a happy wallet and walked out with a bunch of sugar — on more than one occasion. I started with some coffee from Courier Coffee Roasters($ 1.50 to $ 2.25). It tastes more like a lighter roast with an exotic twist. I’m honestly more of a straightforward, bold, dark-roast fan, but this was fine. Dovetail’s signature pecan sticky bun($ 3.75) was the unanimous winner. A ton of gooey awesomeness. Hell yes to the stickiness. Pecans on top also added wonderful texture contrasts. Not surprisingly, I wanted to eat several more of these. Screw the food coma. Screw any diet or detox. This is one of those«5⁄5 panda-approved» pastries to roll around in. Finger-lickin’ awesome. The cinnamon bun($ 3.50) has some good size to it. I’ve been a cinnaholic for years, so it should be no surprise that I went to town here. The vanilla glaze on top uses organic powdered sugar and Mexican 4-fold vanilla, bringing out intense vanilla flavors. I really enjoyed the blueberry muffin($ 2.95). A bunch of fresh blueberries from Stahlbush Island Farms blotched most of the muffin like it was an art canvas. If you like a more savory baked good, check out the Apple Rosemary scone($ 2.75). You’ll get a hint of fresh rosemary in every bite, and the diced organic Gala apples Morgan uses keeps consistent with her goal of fresh, clean flavors. This scone was one of my personal favorites. The Almond Chocolate Cup muffin($ 2.95) has slivered almonds and semisweet chocolate chips on top. I admittedly wasn’t ready for the burst of almond extract. Still real good. A moist slice of banana bread at Dovetail($ 2.50) has such a balanced feel. It’s not too sweet, and the chopped walnuts add a great texture contrast. The cookies here all got a bit of size to them! I’m basically dancing over choosing the Salty Sweet Trail Mix Cookies($ 2.35). Picture a kickass oatmeal cookie, then add some more dried fruit, chocolate chips, and nuts to the party. The blueberries in the Lemon Blueberry Scone($ 2.75) create fruity pockets on the exterior. But it’s the refreshing, addicting glaze on top that makes it a winner. I love blueberries, don’t get me wrong, but I’d want an exclusive party with the lemon glaze. There are other baked goods in the rotation, and damn, I didn’t even get to the savory portion of the menu(which includes soups, sandwiches, and biscuits and gravy). NE Alberta continues to show me it possesses a Murderers’ Row of awesome eateries. Morgan and her staff were extremely friendly. I could camp out in Dovetail, eat everything in sight, and become a fluffy panda overnight.

I’ve done some seriously filling research on the vegan bakery circuit in Portland, and Dovetail wins as my favorite by far. I love how Dovetail’s recipes feature seasonal fruits as focal points of simple and delectable doughs that have the right consistency and mouthfeel: scones break nicely, melt in your mouth, then finish almost biscuity-dry; muffin tops give way to fluffy moist centers with just the right balance of the featured flavors. Combinations like apple rosemary, pear cardamom, lemon strawberry are insanely simple yet extremely satisfying. Whereas other places often overcompensate for what vegan baking lacks with lots of sweetness or extra large serving sizes, Dovetail bakery offers vegan goodness with balance and simplicity. Mmmm worthy, too: Whoopie pies, cinnamon rolls, sticky buns, and specialty cakes

Dear Dovetail, In my incredibly humble opinion, you currently represent the pinnacle of vegan baking. Muffins and scones without eggs and dairy! With ridiculously amazing taste. Not all dried out like so many vegan baked goods, and just the right amount of sweetness without choking me with sugar. I wish I could force feed your shit to every dumbass who has ever made hackneyed comments about their dependence on animal products. You are one of the highest rated places in the entire city, and deserve the ranking. I’m grateful to the Unilocalers of Portland for paving the way for my recent visits. I can’t imagine driving to Portland without picking up some Dovetail goods before I leave. May you be in business, and continue producing the highest-quality items, forever and ever.

If you do a lot of traveling, you may have heard of Babycakes of NYC and L.A. or Mighty-O’s in Seattle or Luscious Layers in Chicago… this place is just as good and in certain selections much better without all the fanfare of those places. It’s nondescript small shop that delivers consistently good baked goods – doesn’t matter if it’s vegan, it’s just good! We’ve been there several times and it’s always good and always delivered with a smile. We’ve never seen it busy and as much as we like that, we would rather see it do good steady business so come on down, have some really good dessert!

Dovetail, How do I love thee? Let me count the pastries. I love thee to the cookie and biscuit and scone. My soul can reach, when feeling alone. For the ends of frosting and ideal cake. I love thee to the level of every pastry’s. Most quiet feed, by sun and vegan delights. I love thee freely, as men strive for whoopie pies. I love thee purely, as they turn from dairies. I love thee with a passion fruit filling put to use In my old boxer briefs, and with my girlfriend’s faith. I love thee with a love I seemed to lose With my lost cinnamon roll, — I love thee with my mouth, Nose, eyes, of all my life! — and, if the pastry choose, I shall but love thee better after raspberry lemon muffins.

Fabulous assortment of pastries. Everything I’ve gotten has been moist and very tasty. I have shoved their lovely muffins, cupcakes, cakes, and cookies in my mouth and loved it. The staff has always been friendly and patient as we make our choices. I must say some of their items, should you purchase them at grocery stores around town, may not be as fresh as the bakery but don’t judge them based on that. A must too if you need a vegan cake… less pricey than Back to Eden and a gazillion more flavor choices. One of my favorite vegan pastry places.

Dovetail Bakery is totally charming. The staff are pleasant and the décor is really cute. The served-on-weekends-only biscuits and gravy with smokey tempeh is outstanding! It’s a pretty small place with only a few tables. If you’re looking to sit and have breakfast on a weekend, get there early.

As far as vegan pastries go, this is the best food I’ve ever had. Vegan usually tastes vegan, Dovetail’s pastries do not. The cupcakes are a little dry and leave something to be desired but I’m a big fan of the scones and I love love love the cinnamon buns. Most of the girls here do give the standard Portland service(meaning they pretty much ignore you and stare at you blankly while you place your order.) However there is one girl who works there and I think might be part owner that is adorable and extremely helpful. We’re regulars there and she’s always fun to chat with. Also, fun fact, she came in second place at the Vegan Iron Chef this year. I’m sorry for anyone that’s had a bad experience here because that means you just must be dead inside.

LOVELOVELOVE! This is my favorite little bakery in town. Small, unique, friendly, non-commercial, and filling my belly with goodness every time. Sticky cinnamon bun… soooo amazing. stickyness isn’t too heavy or sweat… just right. But what I really want that they haven’t had in a while…(although I should check since it is berry season)… A Strawberry Darling!!!

I am flustered with all the good things to say about this bakery. First off… Morgan. She was so sweet, informative and happy. Super friendly. I wanted to go back JUST to support her. I visited Dovetail on my last trip to Portland(looking for a replacement for my favorite Utah vegan friendly bakery City Cakes) and I had to go twice in 2 days. I was so impressed with everything. The chocolate whoopee pie was my favorite of the 3 items we got. They have french pressed coffee that comes with a free refill too. Another thing I loved about Dovetail is that they don’t have a bunch of vegan propaganda all over the place. Just pretty chalk drawings on the chalkboards and awesome décor. This place, man… I’ll be their biggest fan next month when I relocate to Portland. ps. I spent less than 10 $ on 3 things… thats unheard of.

Fantastic bakery. Definitely my favorite of any I have been to in Portland. I had blueberry muffins, chocolate cherry hazelnut scones and chocolate whoopee pies and they were all terrific. Morgan is such a sweetheart too — she was really good to us while we were there. They’re pretty inexpensive too and the options change every day so you never get bored of all the great stuff that rolls through. I’ll be back again and again.

One of the best bakeries I’ve ever been to, period! I originally came here with my parents to see my sister, who works here. I don’t care if she works here or not, this place still rocks! We came in one day and tried a few different treats: cinnamon roll, scones, cookies, coffee… it was all heaven. Everything was moist and fluffy, which I have found are qualities that many vegan baked goods lack. By far my favorite was the Darling, which is a drop scone with a strawberry in the middle. I didn’t know a scone could taste like this. Usually they are crumbly, dry and hard. This scone had a nice little crusty outside and totally soft middle. They also have totally kick ass muffins. The first morning I was there they were making Meyer Lemon Blackberry muffins. There were big honking blackberries all over this thing and it was delicious. Before I got on the train to head back to Seattle, I stopped by and got a box to take home. Two days later I had to ask my sister if they shipped, she said yes, I was happy. Check this place out! You could totally make nice little morning or afternoon out of shopping on this lovely little street. You’ll be glad you did!
