Description

Specialties

Goose Hollow Inn is one of Portland’s most treasured taverns. «The Goose», as it’s known by locals, offers the «Best Reuben on the Planet», freshly prepared soups, salads, and foods, and a great local beer selection on 13 taps, as well as stunning Crab and Shrimp Louis that are only prepared on Tuesdays. Opened in 1967 by former mayor Bud Clark, «The Goose» offers a soulful, cabin-like escape in the heart of the city, where the mix of customers reflects the character of Portland. Great location, just off of MAX, close to the stadium, and at the foot of Washington Park. The layout features a huge relaxing deck with heat, awnings and vine maples and an interior with historical photographs and mellow ambiance. One TV, only on during key events; no lottery. Just good music and company.

History

Established in 1967.

Opened by Bud Clark who was forced to move his tavern, The Spatenhaus, from downtown to make way for urban renewal, aka the Four-Court Fountain. In 1978, Bud posed for the famous poster, «Expose Yourself to Art». In 1985, Bud ran for mayor and up-seated the incumbent, Frank Ivancie, in the primary election. Sigrid Clark, Bud’s wife, who was a violinist with the Oregon Symphony for 39 years and a collector of antiques, ran the tavern while Bud was in office. The Clark family has maintained the original character and charm of the Goose while making changes to allow for growth and continued success. The Goose survived a huge upheaval when MAX was installed. It continues to attract and delight regulars, locals, and tourists amid the sea of restaurants and beer joints that continue to sprout in Portland.
