Specialties

We believe it shouldn’t be hard to find cute and imaginative items for children. We focus on easy to wear, well made clothes that parents and kids both enjoy. We even offer a nice selection of organic clothes as well as several lines of American made clothes. We strive to make sure our toys are non-​toxic, fun and promote imagination and learning. Our book selection is our biggest pride and joy; featuring many of our old favorites as well as some new ones.

We love our customers and want to make sure your visit is a great one. We’d love to help you find that «special something» and even offer free gift wrapping. History

Established in 2004.

Started by mother, designer and businesswoman, Kara Larson, who believes kids toys, clothes and books shouldn’t be hard to find. Fun, quality, cute and long lasting products are exactly what you’ll get at Grasshopper.

The shop feature Wild Carrots clothing which is all handmade in Portland, Oregon. Kara handpicks each limited-​edition fabric and designs each dress and pair of pants with special attention to children’s wants and needs.

Business Owner

Kara Larson began sewing in her sister’s garage, selling her dresses from a clothing line in her back yard or out of a suitcase while on the road. Nothing is traditional for this gal. With a flair for making dresses, Kara created an entire line for women, and the Wild Carrots line for little gals (and guys).

Loving her hometown of Portland, Oregon, Kara decided to put down some roots. In the spring of 2000 she opened her boutique called Tumbleweed.

Hands full, indeed she has also added a husband, John and a son, William. Oh yes, and a fixer of a bungalow.

Inspired by her young son, in the fall of 2004 she opened her latest venture, a whimsical children’s shop with toys clothes and books called Grasshopper.

I took my two year old grandson to Grasshopper, with the intent to buy him a few things. I left without buying anything. The store staff was VERY unfriendly, didn’t want him touching any of the toys, acted like children were unwelcome in her store. It’s a toy store. Kids are going to want to pick up the toys. I have never been in a toy store that did not welcome children with open arms. They have really nice toys, but I will not be spending my money in this store. Ever.

Such a sweet little kids store. There is a large number of books, lots of toys and a respectable selection of clothing & shoes. While it is certainly not as large as my favorite shop on the west side it is most certainly worth a visit. They also gift wrap. I’ll be back.

This store carries amazing products for a decent price. I had such a fun time browsing the products, from puzzles to wind up toys to storytelling cards and stickers. I bought several items to use in work as a counselor.

This is the toy store Portland parents dream of stumbling upon! It’s honestly just beautiful, I love the displays! The book corner is adorable, expensive but perfect! I took my son here last week (not our first visit) to pick out a Christmas gift for his little sister. His focus wasn’t superb and he wanted to buy her a toy that was way out of age range, I was just going to settle and move on to avoid the argument (plus it was his choice) when we got to the register the sales associate remembered our age range and talked my son out of it. She helped gather up age appropriate toys and he was able to pick out two great younger play mobile items for her. Thank you so much! We came back today so my daughter could but my son a gift and once again it was magical!

What a sweet store, I just wish I could come back here more often.
My husband and I were in Portland visiting our youngest daughter who attends grad school in the city. We loved this whole street and were lucky enough to stumble upon this darling store.
We have a granddaughter who is the apple of our eye and the woman who worked here really helped us with that goal, ha! We bought her soft, comfy and cute clothes which she loves wearing.
It was such a fun surprise that when our daughter came home for Christmas, she bought a present for her niece here as well. Aww, now she has multiple outfits plus toys from here.
I guess good taste runs in our family.

I really like this store. Albeit my kids are now too old for most of the merchandise, whenever I need a present for a wee family or friend’s child, this is one of the two stores I like to hit. They have beautiful, cute clothes, funky toys and always a great selection.

This toy store is awesome! They have a large selection of unique and imaginative toys, games, books, and puzzles. I easily spent 45 minutes in there trying to decide what to buy because there was just so much great stuff! The staff was really friendly and eager to help in any way they could. They offered gift wrapping, I can’t remember the last time I was in a store that did that. I will definitely be back!

I have previously confessed to be a head over heels in love with my granddaughter, Grandpa. I have manifested this love in many ways one of which is to buy her clothes. Cute clothes. Lots of cute clothes.
Enter Grasshopper. My wife and I went to visit our Portland grad school attending daughter. We got to see her, try new restaurants, see great nature and on the last day, buy baby clothes.
We wandered back over to Alberta for one more quilt store and find a café for breakfast. Next to said café was a toy and clothing store which was closed. However, when we were done with breakfast, it was open. Victory.
The woman who worked here was very personable and helped us find the sizes we wanted and a shirt which had the word Grasshopper on it and the location, thus giving us a souvenir with Portland on it.
This crazy Grandpa can’t wait to give his little darling two darling and unique outfits from Portland. Not sure if this keeps Portland wierd but it does keep her well dressed.

Great spot for picking up that perfect present for your friend or family member that is having a baby! I could get into so much trouble here and that is just shopping for my sister-​in-​law and one of best girlfriends. I am just not cut out for resisting the temptation to spoil friends and family with new babies on the way. The service was great here and the selection was a nice range. Love the local feel and the gift wrapping option included. Some of the items are on the pricier side but it is worth it supporting local.

Grasshopper is just a couple blocks from our house. With a 6-​month old who got loads of hand-​me-​downs, we don’t have tons of reason to go in, but we love to anyway. The ladies working there are always so happy, friendly and helpful. While it’s not always the cheapest, I do love supporting them. It’s great experience being in there, they have an excellent and careful choice of products, and a relaxed environment. Support local, support nice people, support Grasshopper.

What an amazing toy store. We were having breakfast at Waffle Window, when the family sitting next to us pulls out this magnetic tiles for her child to play with. Of course, my twins became her friend immediately. They were nice to let us know where they bought this Magnet-​tiles. So we packed the twins and drove to the store. The place is so cool. Of course, cool is not cheap, really I mean it, we bought a 32 piece clear box and a 48 piece box, both were about $ 120. Most of the tiles are 2“x2″ and smaller, so it is pretty pricey. I checked out the cute shoes for babies. Thank goodness they don’t have them for toddlers, because sometimes I cannot help myself when I see something cute. The shoes were adorable, most of them $ 56, yes for baby shoes. If you are like me and have a baby, don’t come unless you want to spend a lot of money, this place has stuff that I have not seen in other stores, really awesome.

I love this store! I could snatch up just about everything they sell. They don’t have a wide selection of children’s clothing but what they do have is top-​notch and gorgeous.
Lots of fun and eclectic toys to choose from. I come here to find gifts and baby items that you just won’t come across anywhere else. Prices aren’t cheap but you are paying for high quality, long-​lasting items so I say it is well worth it.

Grasshopper is an adorable shop that I will surely be returning to.
I had stopped in last week to get some ideas for gifts for my daughter’s upcoming first birthday, and I came away with a few great things.
Now, I consider myself to be kind of a freak as far as children’s clothes, toys, gear, etc. This is due to the significant amount of on line «research» I tend to do regarding such items. Grasshopper had many wonderful things that I had not seen before, however, and I was very happy to make some new discoveries.
This shop contains a very thoughtful selection of toys, books, clothing and a small amount of «gear» as related to babies and small children. Most of the toys were of the more eco-​friendly, nontoxic variety. I picked up several nontoxic tub toys for my daughter and eyed quite a few other things as I plan for her birthday presents from hubs and I for later this month.
The ladies who wok here do a wonderful job. They are super helpful and friendly.
As a bonus, gift-​wrapping is complimentary no matter what you buy… and very cute!

Grasshopper has saved me from doomed baby shower gift-​giving a handful of times now. And to make it extra special I usually like to do it on the way to the shower so I feel stressed and rushed.
I first get in there and look around and pretend like I know anything about what moms-​to-​be want/​need. I mean, I’m not retarded, I know what babies need, but there are many things to consider.
Grasshopper has tons of cute stuff. Some expensive, some not. Local stuff. Classic stuff. Organic stuff. Books. Toys. Cute children inside (!)
What do I get? Too many options!
So I love places where the sales people are smart and care about the product they’re selling and I can say «Hi! I’m going to a baby shower right now. They don’t know the gender. This is how much money I want to spend. Please tell me what to buy!»
And the girl is a pro and asks me what the mom is like and I tell her she’s cool and stylish, yet conservative.
And she says «okay, you could buy this, this, and this or this, this, and this. Or this. Or this.»
I say okay and choose my this’s.
Her coworker wraps it while she rings it up. I spend $ 20 less than I intended (awesome). She makes charming small talk and tells me I’m totally going to win the prize.
I thank her kindly.
I go. I’m relieved. We all cry at the shower and all is well with the world.
