Amazing food with an extremely great healthy kick! Must have for a portlander! Great smoothies also.

Great place! Has a nice atmosphere. I absolutely love the Mac n Cheese and this place has my favorite matcha lattes. The pancakes and wavos rancheros and fresh juices are great as well.

They have some good dishes. But you’ll kind of have to find your way around the menu. I have had some seriously disappointing meals here. Basically, never get a salad from here. It seems weird that a vegan place would have terrible salads. But they do. Try the cooked entrees and drinks. But don’t get salads. Though, the bowls can be okay. Still, very dry and expensive for such a stupidly simple dish. Just because the interior looks so cute and the employees are all equally hipster… And the dishes look so Instagram worthy… It’s not actually very good to eat. It’s like they chose having a cool vibe over making tasty meals. I payed 10 bucks for some dry quinoa and steamed kale with enough sauce for like three bites. And it’s 25¢ for more sauce. You charged me 10 bucks for quinoa but can’t afford to give people extra sauce if they want some? Half, or actually probably all the people that come here are just trying to be cool. If you want a good rice bowl go down the street to the whole bowl.

So so good. Harlow has a friendly, lovely atmosphere. If I lived in Portland I’d eat here regularly.

I had a raw salad and enjoyed every bite. The dressing was tangy and mixed well with everything in the bowl. I recommend this place for vegetarians and vegans. And if you eat raw, they have a couple choices that will not disappoint.

I wanted so bad to be in love with Harlow, but I think I must have not chosen the best menu options. I had the Equinox Salad. It sounded good on paper but was really pretty boring. The beets were raw and not dressed in any way, so I found them(while beautifully spirally cut) to be pretty blah. I would have loved more butternut squash and a better dressing too. The dressing was billed as a vinaigrette but really just tasted like oil. There was no tang or sharpness to brighten up the salad. My husband had the curry salad which was far tastier. The tempeh and noodles in it made for a far more hearty and flavorful meal. I think I would have been way happier with my choice if I had gone that direction. We also shared the Hawthorne Mac & Cheese. While it was exciting to have a gluten and dairy free option we could both try, it was really plain. Once again I didn’t find it to have much flavor. Truthfully I like the $ 3 evol frozen gluten free Mac & Cheese that I get at the store far better. Lastly we had banana bread. Once again, super boring. It was very, very dry. I love banana bread but come on people the stuff is supposed to be moist. So it wasn’t bad but it was just boring. I want to come again and try something else. They have a great menu for gluten free vegetarians such a myself. I’m not ready to give up on it but I’m certainly not excited either.

If you are vegetarian or vegan this is definitely a must. I’m neither and still love this place. I really like the food here. Clean, fresh, great service. I love prasad, and this place is like prasad but serves breakfast and dinner. Only minor gripe would be that after several visits, several of the dishes taste very similar. Still quite good. Tried the mocha here and was pleasantly surprised. it was really good. The flapjacks were good but not great. I like my pancakes soft and fluffy, these were not. Still tasted good, just not the texture I was looking for.

Some of the best mac and cheese I’ve ever had, and it didn’t even have cheese. I’m not vegan or gluten-free, but I enjoy eating healthy. I love Prasad and decided to check out their sister-spot Harlow. Their space is super cozy, inviting, open. You order at the counter and grab a seat. The window tables are perfect for people-watching. I got a Matcha Latte with hazelnut milk which was to die for. Their Hawthorne Mac is where it’s at. Quinoa pasta, kale, Daiya cheese, hazelnut milk, garlic, almond Parmesan, and spices. It’s so good y’all. Creamy, comforting, and quite filling. The portion is also just right and reasonably priced at $ 7. And whenever I make quinoa pasta at home, it certainly doesn’t taste anywhere near this good. Their texture is spot-on. Their bowls are nearly identical to Prasad’s and they’re great, too. Also, the gluten-free peanut butter cookies are darn tasty. My husband and I love this place and neither of us are vegan, vegetarian, or gluten-intolerant. If you appreciate healthy, wholesome ingredients and just plain good food, you’ll dig Harlow. ;)

For filling, comfort, healthy food, this is your spot! Their Mac n cheese is the most guilt free item you can order and it definitely hits the spot this afternoon after my 4 hour exam. Comparable to its sister restaurant, Prasad, but even better with a wider menu and more spaced out and chill hangout type of ambience. On the regular, I’ve ordered their jalapeño cornbread. Admittedly it isn’t as good as it used to be — I also think they changed their butter from a honey butter to regular. No fun. But really, from their hot ciders and toddys to their dairy free cheesecake, I’m obsessed. I think the only ding is that they’re a busy spot so be ready to wait a little. But. It’s. Always. Worth. It!

If you’ve never been to Harlow then you’re missing out! It’s a wonderful establishment with some of the freshest dishes I’ve come across. They’re about 98% vegan but let me tell you, meat lovers won’t be disappointed after a meal there. My bestie and I walked in a busy humpday at about 7:30PM and were immediately pleased. The huge room was brightly lit and not surprisingly semi-full. We walked to the counter after surveying the menu(this is a order and then have a seat place) and our cashier was friendly. My bestie chose the Chipotle Chili Bowl and a Shanti juice, and I had the Betty Bowl. After we found our seats we waited about 10 minutes before our bowls has arrived. THEYWEREBEAUTIFUL! And let me tell you, they certainly tasted as good as they looked! We sat there, enjoyed our food and had wonderful conversation — the tables aren’t too close together so you can do that — and by the end of our meal we were stuffed. Not that stuffed — you can’t walk, you have to unbutton your pants stuffed. The satisfied and energizing stuffed. All in all, my experience was delightful. I will be back.

HMM, really wanted to love this place but it was a-ok. The burger I got was super small, it was roughly the size of my fist, and was served with blue corn tortilla chips. WTF? Where are my fries? Sorry guess I’m old fashioned and stuck in my ways but I want fries with my burger, not dry confused chips. The burger itself was good, just wish it was a tad larger. Boyfriend ordered the mac and cheese. It was pretty good even if the cheese base was made with Daiya, which I tend to despise. It usually tastes like soggy butt to me, but they must’ve cooked it with many other ingredients because it was pretty palatable. There was also squash and kale, and we added chile to it so it wasn;t half bad. Still could taste that nasty Daiya though. Bleh. For dessert, we shared the pecan cheese cake and it was great! Unfortunately, it was the only thing I truly enjoyed. I would come back again and try a bowl instead.

In any other city, Harlow would be elevated as an unconventional yet extraordinary eatery. In Portland, however, where restaurants such as these seem to be as ubiquitous as snobby coffee joints, craft beer pubs and antique(second-hand) shops, this cozy Hawthorne bistro is just another example of the diverse and healthy dining options available to you in this vibrant city. With their playful and health-minded takes on traditional comfort foods all set in a comfortable open dining room, Harlow is, for me, quintessential Portland dining. I was on a recent trip to Portland with my brothers and we decided to venture onto Hawthorne for breakfast. Yes, there are a lot of options, but we settled on Harlow. It was good choice. Harlow is a casual dining restaurant where you order at the counter and the food is delivered to your table. Their menu includes a lot choices for those looking to avoid meat or gluten or GMOs. I don’t eat eggs, so it was nice to see that their breakfast items offered the choice of eggs or tempeh. I ordered their Chickpea Hash. When you think traditional hash, your mind(at least my mind) goes towards a hearty, greasy mix of meat and potatoes. Not at Harlow. Their hash consists of kale and spinach, sauteed with mushrooms, zucchini, cabbage and chickpeas, topped with wonderfully-fried bars of tempeh. Drizzled on top is a spicy red bell pepper sauce. At first, I was a little disappointed in the serving size, but after savoring every single bite, I found myself absolutely stuffed. It was amazing! My brothers ordered the Mercy Blues(Harlow’s take on eggs benedict, served up with polenta and kale) and the Pride of Portland(A bowl of brown rice with a poached egg and avocado, served with a green juice). They looked good, and my brothers were happy as well. All in all, if you’re coming to Portland and want to get a taste of the city, look no further that Harlow! Enjoy!

AMAZING!!! Vegan heaven! This was my first visit! Really had no idea what to expect! I knew they’d have some vegan options, but wasn’t sure if they’d be good! You must order from the counter! And the line is quite long! Thankfully Unilocal had loads of food photos for me to peruse while I waited! The whole menu is gluten free and 98% vegan! I’ve only been vegan for 6 months. So I was super excited to try their Mac N Cheese! I got the Betty bowl with Avo as well, just in case the mac was wac! The Mac was NOT wac! The Mac was BOMB!!! This was seriously the best meal I’ve had in a really long time! I cannot wait to go back! I was super impressed! It is quite noisy inside! The acoustics do not aid a cosy group chat! It’s seriously hard to hear what your peeps are saying! I can’t give it five stars because it’s on Hawthorne with no parking! I’m west side till I die! Taking the bus would take two hours! So, sorry! Parallel parking on the grimy gross streets of Hawthorne put me in a fowl mood before I entered the building! Also the bathroom smells like 5million people used it since it was last cleaned! Considering all that, I’ll be back next week for Betty and the Mac!

My salad was delicious, though pricey. But the ingredients were so fresh and worth the money. I just wish it was bigger! I’m confident, judging by my experience, that no matter whta you order you will love, and they are very good with customizing your order and/or adding things, as I did.

I entered the establishment with glee looking forward to the Hawthorne Mac which I had saw some yummy looking pictures of here on Unilocal and I left disappointed. The noodles were chewy and the sauce sat at the bottom of the bowl instead of sticking to the noodles. I had to ask for a spoon so I could eat the sauce and noodles together. I was really hungry so I finished it. I knew I was going to leave a less than stellar review so I talked to the manager about it but my feeling is that she didn’t care and my intuition says she probably talked about me when I left because that’s just the vibe I got. Of course I don’t know if that’s the case. So overall I’m disappointed with my experience here but I gave two stars for offering a gluten free vegan mac and I hope it gets better.

First thing, first. There is a part of me that soooo wants to give this place 5 stars – the workers here are so cool and friendly, the place has a nice vibe, and I always want to send at least my spiritual support to vegan and vegetarian restaurants. Recent breakfast: I had the huevos rancheros, on a bed of kale with house made guac, some pickled jalapeño slices, salsa and their cashew crème. Quite tasty. They did fry the tortillas supporting the dish, and here’s where the trouble started. The kale pretty much instantly softened the corn. So I don’t know about you, but if I am going to have the extra calories of something fried like that, I want to get the requisite crunch. Truth is, the kale not only deprived me of that satisfying crisp tooth shatter, but for the first half of my meal, it made it extremely difficult to cut into – like tough leather. As time progressed, they did soften back and became more manageable, but that returns us to why fry at all? Perhaps if they wrung out the kale before loading it on the plate? Perhaps if the tortilla were put to the side with kale, beans and eggs in the middle – sort of a deconstructed redux? Perhaps really fresh plain steamed corn tortillas? Choices abound. On to the guac – fresh, yes. Ripe avos, yes. A little pasty and overworked to my taste, though. The eggs were poached perfectly though, and the salsa didn’t have that soulless refrigerated chill to it that ruins it in so many other places. They are on the right track. So they are doing solid work here, and I will so be back – if only to try and up their rating. Food, as it is, in my personal world where we earn our accolades, still is a 3.5. But for so many other reasons, I rounded up. Like the house blend black tea, which had a Keemun base in my assessment, but remained low in tannins and astringency even after a healthy steep time.

Hands down best breakfast I’ve had in my six trips to the States, and up there in contention with some of the best I’ve had anywhere in fact. Yes, the ‘do I need a dictionary’ ingredients, the ‘do you want a side of quinoa with that’ menu, the out of the ordinary ‘order then sit down’ instructions, and the heavily bearded and tattooed staff and clientele all lend a heavy hipstermatic air to the place, but hey, you’re in Hawthorne Portland… it’d be disappointing if it wasn’t hipster! We were pretty elated initially to just find a place that has some good tea options(generally a rarity Stateside) but we were blown away by the food. Healthy food done so well with amazing focus on tastes and flavours. Only issue is that we want to just keep going back while we’re here — but also want to hopefully discover more Portland places as good as this! What to do, what to do?!

Came here on the way to taking my gluten free friend to the airport. I was a bit worried that the line was pretty long and that we’d have to rush. It was okay in the end, but just make sure to come with time to spare. The line is long and does take some time to get through. You order at the bar and then sit down at any available table. While the entire menu looks awesome, we both ended up ordering the huevos rancheros, hers with egg and mine with tempeh. They were delicious! I was tempted to lick my plate. Although my husband wasn’t with us, he asked for the chipotle chili bowl. I got it to go with the quinoa and he loved it. I took a nibble of his chili and thought it was good. We also got a slice of the vegan, gluten free berries and cream cheesecake. Holy yum! It was creamy and delicious. The crust was awesome. There is a separate line for take out only and they have a meal on the menu which is on a scale so that even underprivileged people can get an awesome organic meal. If you know any homeless around the area, point them to Harlow so they can get an awesome meal for as low as $ 2!!! Better yet, buy it for them!
