Local35

The aesthetic of this store has changed over the years. I would now liken it to an overpriced Urban Outfitter. In fact, I once bought a jacket here (label B. Scott) for around $ 350, only to discover the same jacket online at Urban Outfitter (under the label «B. Scott for Urban Outfitter») on sale for $ 4.99 (yes, four dollars and ninety nine cents). I brought this up to the local 35 owner, which didn’t go anywhere. I took it up with Brandon Scott, who explained, apologized, and sent me a wool cardigan.
I was recently shopping at Local 35 and chatting with one of the salespeople. The owner directed the kind salesperson away from me and to a pair of tweens shopping for a dress. I was surprised — maintaining relationships with clientele should be an integral part of how a store is run, particularly with a client such as myself who has spent quite a bit of money at this silly little store over the years. However, given the Urban Outfitter aesthetic, perhaps cultivating a clientele of tweens is the focus of this store?
Gentleman, if you are looking for quality clothing by independent designers in combination with personalized customer service, I would direct you to Blackbird or Frances May.

They have a great selection of the best brands and have great sales often.

Local 35 is probably my favorite menswear destination in Portland as it currently stands. The staff, and especially the owner, are incredibly nice and very knowledgeable about the products they carry. They certainly have an aesthetic, so for fans of stores like Mario and the like, you may feel a bit like a fish out of water.
The prices are reasonable, and the sales are the best in Portland. 50−70% off, after a month or two of stocking?! Insanity.

Just like your favorite coffee shop, Local35 has a stamp card: 10 stamps = 1 reward. Unlike your local coffee shop, you’ll need to spend $ 100 to get 1 stamp, and collecting 10 stamps earns you $ 50 off. Oh, sure, scoff: you’ll never drop a grand at a tiny shop on Hawthorne.
Several months and 7 stamps later, my boyfriend and I are arguing over which one of us will deserve the $ 50.
There’s a nice variety of low to high priced denim; Cheap Monday and WeSC on the low end, to APC and Acne on the high. And after navigating the crowded sidewalks and cluttered vintage shops on this stretch of Hawthorne, Local35’s muted, modern aesthetic is calming: a soothing sartorial sigh of relief.

I love the cheep monday brand they sell at this store.
And their socks.
And all their bags.

Occasionally I find things that work for at Local 35. It’s a trendy store, so if you like the «classics» in your wardrobe, they might be a bit too hipster for you. However, I like most of their designers, and I’ve bought about 5 – 6 things from them in the past year.
The only reason I’m giving them 3 stars is their service. Have they imported these clerks from Seattle? It’s really cold and vibey in here… very unlike Portland. The staff is consistently indifferent, and seems «bothered» when you have questions.

Local 35 is truly my favorite store. Forever 21 might be a little heart broken I’ve said this … but it’s a different league.
That being said, Local 35 is way to expensive to adorn myself solely in there attire. However it is much needed for those special pieces. As Tim Gunn would say, you just need those 10 essential pieces… everything else can be Forever 21 and thrift stores. Well I’m not sure he said that last part but I’m positive about the first.
You can always count on Local 35 for interesting and well made clothes. Always a deal hunter, I’ve even purchased some beautiful stuff on sale. Clothes aside, they have great accessories and jewelry… oh lord have mercy the jewelry. Not a lot mind you, but what they do have always wonderful. I’ve bought a few pieces without having to overdraw my bank account! It’s always a practice in impulse control to leave without something new and shinny for myself.
Can you find some of this stuff online for less… yes. but support your local business. your Local 35 business. (dad joke)

I should first state that this is a 3.5 (almost almost 4 star) review. The store is beautiful, clean, and aesthetically appealing to the eyes. It also carries a good selection of menswear, all of which are of very good quality.
I should also note that the store has a very small selection of women’s clothing, not enough to satisfy the beastly shopper in me.
I brought my guy here to look for clothes, and kind of gave up looking for anything for myself.
One thing that I should say knocks this place down a star (or more): the clothes there are DEFINITELY pricey, more so than your average boutique store. While this place has a selection comparable to that you’d find on 23^rd, its normal (and sales) prices definitely make it so that the average person would have to REALLY REALLY think about that ONE item they’d like to buy here.
Even in the nicest boutiques I’ve been to, there have been a handful of items/​accessories that are well-​priced, leading up to the pricey pricey. Here, it seems to be all pricey pricey.

This place’s snazzy sandwich board incited me inside as I was wandering around Hawthorne, and I practically had to drag myself out a little while later so I wouldn’t empty my account here.
They had lots of great men’s jeans, clothes, and accessories. Just about everything in there was totally awesome. Unfortunately the selection was a little bit smaller than I would have liked, but it wasn’t bad for a boutique this size.
The staff seemed friendly and they were neither aloof nor overbearing.
This would definitely be towards the top of my list of places to stop if I found a duffel bag full of money, but it was a little bit on the expensive side for me otherwise. They do seem to have some pretty nice sales though.

aww, guys, aww… a few things about local35 bum me out.
first off, the name… sounds like a labor union. and i’m all for unions, but when i think of clothes, i would like to think of something less… laborious.
and although they have a really great, inviting vibe and excellent service, i really wish they had a larger and more varied selection for the girlies. it’s weird to me when surf shops in hawaii carry fuller lines and more labels than mainland boutiques.
what they do carry makes me think «so cal blogospheresque» (thus my hawaii comparison) — apc, wesc, rvca, house of harlow, acne, quiksilver, elizabeth and james (i think… if they don’t, they might as well), etc. i’m trying to get away from that lazy lanky beachy youth look (especially since i’m no longer very lanky or anywhere near a beach… or young *sniff*, for that matter… still pretty lazy though), but none of their brands are for girls who desire a little more sophistication and maturity in their dress (i.e. less jersey knits).
i have to say that their men’s selection + sale are very nice and i’m pretty jealous that i’m not a guy when i walk in there sometimes.
so local35, grow it up a little and get some diversity, and i might support you more. otherwise, i might as well just get some gear off the interwebz… and you know how i haaaaaate not being sustainable and buying local and blah blah blah.

My experience at Local35 was instantly awesome when I earned a new Foursquare badge upon checking in. I know, I know! Total geek out. But it turns out, the place is awesome on its own merits and not just on Barvo’s.
They carry labels I’m into, not unlike other stores here in San Francisco, including the first ever Hyden Yoo women’s line, but it was the service that led me to purchase and give the shop 5 stars.
In seeing my excitement over the Hyden Yoo selection of pieces, the guy working the shop was super happy to chat with me about the direction of the line, the story behind its creation, and give me a 20% discount on a beautiful ¾ sleeved khaki coat!
I hadn’t seen the coat in any store here in the City, and it was so beautiful I couldn’t pass up the deal or bet on it popping up on Gilt in the future. There was no sale happening at the store, and I’d made it known I wasn’t a local customer. It was great to see my enthusiasm for the labels offered matched by the shop keeper– and then rewarded with a discount for no special reason at all!

Local35 is a great clothing, shoe, and accessory shop. They sell high quality lines offering «pieces» that will last long-​term and remain favorites. Almost everything I have purchased from here, I still own.
The owner is almost always in the store which is a nice personal touch. He is very good about introducing new products and keeping the «staples» in stock. The constant redesign of the store and ever-​changing product displays are worth coming to see as well.
If you want a nice jacket, fantastic jeans, casual t’s, an enormous selection of wallets and accessories, and a good selection of shoes, Local 35 is the store.

Local35 is a small locally owned shop for clothing and accessories. They gather stylish brands that are a step down from formal, definitely a few steps up from Portland’s studied thrifty non-​style, with a strong design sense.
I consistently see Portland one-​of-​a-​kind women designers shopping for or with their boyfriends here.
The owner is usually there and has been great with suggestions in a non-​obtrusive way. They have excellent sales too, announced by their mailing list. Also ask them about suggested alteration spots.
I am clueless on women’s fashion, but for men, this is one of a very few Portland spots for cool stuff. I hate clothes shopping, so I try to find some dependable go-​to spots when in search of something specific. This is one.
Local=Local35.

I always want to throw my entire wardrobe into a giant bonfire after entering Local 35. I have rust stains on my damn jeans. My shirt is covered in tacky, embroidered birds. I am a walking disaster, the fashion equivalent of Pigpen. Someone put me out of my misery and into a pair of those bomb-​ass Acne jeans!
If you’re ready to invest in a couple of classic, versatile pieces, this is the place to be. These are beautiful clothes, meant to be loved and cared for, not kicked to the curb after a wash or two. While I love the clothing selection, I think my favorites are the coats and bags they carry; every time I go in, there’s some sort of new twist on an old classic that makes me mentally calculate the available balance in my checking account. Of course, there’s also a huge stack of premium denim, which is reason enough to visit.
The sale rack is reliable and awesome and the only thing I can realistically afford. Luckily, items are habitually up to 70% off — good items, too, not just the dregs. The staff has always treated me kindly, even when I’ve tried a billion things on and bought nothing. They’re knowledgeable and passionate about the lines they carry, especially the denim.
Also: hot dudes shop here. Hot dudes work here. If they started serving alcohol, I’d find a way to give them a sixth star.

I have been shopping here since the store has opened. I have bought many «pieces» that have been investments. In all due honesty, there may have been a manufacturing defect or quality issue with a garment but it just means that I look better next time, ask questions, and advice from the owner and staff. It’s all about how versatile, fit, and classic the clothing is
This store, (and blake for that matter), are the only mens stores that you should be buying major pieces: high quality denim, outerwear, sweaters, and shirts.
If you want to whine about cost buy a way cheaper knock off at Old Navy and throw it away after 4,5 washings, replace it and repeat.
Why go through all that when you can have 2 and wear them all the time?
Buy local and from people who love clothes and want you to keep spending money there by returning. I do.

Local 35 has a friendly and stylish vibe. It was a pleasure to walk around and admire not only the men’s clothing, but the accessories, the presentation, the originality, and the selection. Store staff was also friendly and welcoming. I’m not sure what style choices would suit me best, but I think Gayle would enjoy doing some major damage here on my behalf.

Seriously, what has become of me? Yesterday I was your thriftiest second hand shopper ever, and today I bought a $ 200 pair of jeans. I feel kinda snobby… However, the jeans are freakin’ amazing and my ass looks oh so good. ha!
The sales associate was very very helpful and seemed to know more about jeans than the baristas in this town know about coffee. He could tell me where they were designed, who designed them, and all about the eco friendly organic materials used in many of them.
Plus, the selection here is good, although I think the mens clothing is a wee bit better than the ladies choices (I would usually go to Frank James for that variety). However, the people who own this place have impeccable taste and know there stuff. Congratulations Local35… you have converted me.

Remember when you were a kid and you went to the mall after 8pm? You knew that at 8:30 half of the stores in the mall would lower their security gates ¼ of the way to signal to interested shoppers: We have math homework to do tonight… stay out! This has always been one of the many reasons why the mall makes my skin crawl.
What do I do to avoid this kind of shitty service? I shop local, which is what I intended to do when I busted ass across town to reach Local 35 before they closed early at 4pm for the New Year. At 3:55pm I hit the front door with a wallet full of cash and a very specific need: black denim. What did I get? I got a very hurried brush off from the store’s lone employee: «Sorry, we’re closed.»
You know, retail’s in bad shape right now, and I was ready to spend. She could’ve locked the door, helped me find my 34×30 black denim, and had me out at 4:01. Instead, she made me feel guilty and sent me out in the rain.
I guess she had math homework to do.

1÷1÷2009 — One of the owners just contacted me to apologize. Class act. It’s clear that they’re paying attention, and I dig that. The one star stands, but I’ll shop there again. This is why local rules.

Whoa… pretentious. And we didn’t get greeted upon entering. There wasn’t music on, and hey… I like to shop and spend. I walked in, and was out within 2 minutes. Not worth being uncomfortable when I can spend elsewhere.
Actually liked a lot of stuff, and would have bought something for my boyfriend. But, no thanks.

I think that local has really come into its own lately. The merchandise used to be a bit thin, but its filled out now. Sadly, with that has come non — local designers. Dickies are not made in Portland, right?
The local pieces they have are interesting, political, vocal, very Portland stylish, and tough.
If you are looking for something individual, then local is for you.
