Immortal Pie and Larder

My husband purchased two chicken pot pies for dinner after enjoying one earlier this week at lunch. The aroma while baking was a hint at what was to come. What a delicous treat! Filled with large pieces of chicken, mushrooms and a perfectly spiced sauce. The crust was flakey, tender and melt in your mouth. We are looking forward to trying some of the others. Great job!

Whilst at the Country Cat this past weekend, I spied a sandwich board on Stark which said ‘pie’. After brunch my friend and I sauntered down the block to check it out. Immortal Pie and Larder? With a name like that we KNEW there was something good going on. I have always been kind of ‘iffy’ on the pie genre. I grew up on my mama’s pies, the crusts of which were prepared with (gulp) lard. She was old school like that.
After I turned veggie, I never really had pie that came close to the forbidden crust Mom used to dish out. And savory pies? Most are not done very well, at least that had been my experience. Immortal has changed all that.
I was down with the ‘fully cooked– just re-​heat’ thang. I am all about convenience during the week when I cannot escape the orifice errr office to get myself a proper lunch. I had the helpful staffer box up all three of their vegetarian offerings of the day– broccoli onion cheese, spinach feta garbanzo, and heirloom pumpkin –n– cashew.
Dynamic is the word that comes to mind. The flavors are beautifully married, whoever makes these babies knows a thing or two about food. They were easy to reheat, they keep very well, and the crust is a revelation.
In short, I recommend this joint, and I look forward to more adventures in pie. PS– they also have Belgian ales, wines and chocolate. Can you really go wrong?

In my past, sweet usually wins over savory. But, lately, when it comes to pie, I’ve been changing my ways. Pastrygirl and Bipartisan Café (coffee, pie and wi-​fi) are just down the block, but I can’t pass by Immortal Pie and Larder without picking up one of their hearty pies.
Everything I’ve ordered has been good to great. I can’t quite give them five stars, because Pacific Pie Company absolutely blew me away earlier this month. The menu rotates seasonally, so a pie (green tomato and cheese) I enjoyed a couple months ago is no longer on the menu. There are usually five to eight choices that you take home and bake.
Some of their combinations are interesting (curried pumpkin and cashew, chipotle beef), but all work. Happiness is a savory pie in the oven and a bottle of wine. Speaking of which, they sell wine too.

in a town with plenty of places to eat and more than one place for a meat pie it’s nice to know that they’re all good. We walked into this place while walking to dinner. Warning, the smells when you open the door is addictive. with that alone i we bought 3 pies to take home while on our way to dinner.
i had the turkey pot pie. the crust might have been my bad because i didn’t bake it long enough. it was filled with veggies. taste is good but i still can’t get over how much veggies is in it. it’s not a negative thing, it’s just what i remembered most about it.
then i had the cheese and pepper tart. it smelled so good and taste great too. i only wish there was more cheese for ooey goodness. but overall delicious snacks for me.

It has tables/​chairs so you can dine in. It’s sparse store. But I think I like it!

Unusual stocking stuffers. Specialty chocolates and little homemade pies and port wines and regular wines as well. Unique local items too. It’s like a mish mash and fun to walk around discovering the different products they carry. Sweet people.

Oh man. Oh how I love Immortal Pie. Morgan is amazing. Her creations of mouthwatering goodness are to die for. I have to be honest, when I take a bite of her delicious pie crust I think I seriously moan. It is that good. Buttery, flaky, melts in your mouth. It reminds me of what sweet little grandma would have done back before she decided to buy frozen pie crust. Morgan’s pie’s will be the fat of me. Good thing it’s a wee bit of a drive from my house.

What a fun place to check out! We didn’t actually get any pie yet, we were too full from our trip to the Pastrygirl down the street, but we did pick up some beer and I have to vouch for their selection. It’s FANTASTIC! We’ll be back because both the savory and sweet pies looked incredible, and there was a long line of fans on the Sunday afternoon that we ducked in, so that’s a very good sign. Looking forward to sharing an update SOON!

I’ve been following this place on Facebook since they opened, and when they mentioned that they were offering Chicken and Leek, Caramel Apple, and Scotch pies all in the same day, I knew the time had finally come — must get pie.
We didn’t realize that this place isn’t an eatery (you purchase your pies cold), but thankfully we happened to have a cooler in the car to keep our pies at a safe temperature since we were out shopping and running errands. So much for a much-​anticipated lunch, but all’s well that ends well. We heated those bad boys up for dinner and they were fantastic!
The Scotch pie had a nice sort of lamb patty in the middle, atop a layer of potato slices. The crust was extra flaky on this one. The Chicken and Leek was filled to the brim with a yummy (but slightly under-​salted) mixture of shredded chicken with perhaps a hint of tarragon? This pie was more solid, but still very tender. The Caramel apple pie was very tasty, but a slight disappointment only in that we prefer the apples to be a little more cooked. Some were still a little crunchy and the ones that were more cooked seemed to leak juices, thereby making the bottom of the pie a wet, sloppy mess. Everything tasted really good though, so I can’t knock it.

We all know what pies are, and with the impending arrival of Immortal Pie and larder, I was pretty stoked for this new addition to the almost-​arrived Montavilla Strip on SE Stark. With Bipartisan a few doors down, we now have access to some of the best fruit and savory pies in Portland. That one was a no brainer.
But what the heck is a larder? I wasn’t too concerned about this aspect, because… hey… pie. That’s enough for me to be excited, right? Well, m upon stopping by this new storefront on a sunny Saturday afternoon, I learned, via a sign on the door, that a ‘larder’ is a general pantry — a cool place you store food of all sorts.
Brilliant.
Immortal Pie and Larder is a combination pie-​shop and general store, serving up foodie-​forward treats and high-​end delicacies. It’s one stop shopping for nothing you need and everything you want. Specialty salts, fancy chocolate, jars of fig confit, high-​end sardines, some delicious cheeses, wine, beer, bubbly, crackers, gourmet snacks and accoutrements, and some odds and ends like vintage beer glasses and some assorted randomness. Basically, a place where I could spend a lot of $$, quick. As if I wasn’t going to be drawn in by the pies alone!
I decided to go with a take-​and-​bake «Cowgirl Chili» pie. It’s a little pie — the size of a pot pie, served up in a small compostable pie pan. They’re still setting up, and don’t have hot pies yet, so right now, they come cold, and you take home and bake for around 20 – 30 minutes at 350. I baked the pie for about 25 min, and it could probably have used the 5 more min (my oven sucks).
The pie itself was delicious, a bottom crust, a serving of ground-​beef and black bean chili, a layer of cheddar cheese, and a nice, flaky top-​crust. For someone who is a fan of pot pies and savory pies, I was pretty much in heaven. Again, I should have cooked it a little longer to get the crust on the bottom a little more well-​cooked, but as far as what Immortal Pie served up, it was very good. I look forward to going back to check out some of the other savory pies, as well as drooling over the fine food, wine, and beer selections.
Or, as I guess I should say: I’m gonna hit that larder a little harder next time.

How fun is this place?! Brand new to the Montavilla «Strip» on SE Stark, this place is a little toy store for adult foodies. Morgan, the owner, described the mix of products as «my favorite stuff all in one place» and clearly she and her husband have excellent taste.
Vintage beer glasses, handpicked wine and beer with personalized descriptions and recommendations for pairing, cheese, salts, candies, bitters, crackers, and of course, the savory pies made fresh daily. We loved it!
The only reason it gets 4 stars is so that I can upgrade to 5 once they’ve expanded their selection and inventory when everyone else discovers this great little gem of a store.
