Hadn’t been there in a few years, but popped in for a quick bite tonight. Only one other customer, when it used to be very crowded. I suspect the tuna I ordered was not fresh anymore. It looked almost black. It might have been ok, but looked totally unappealing. The nori was chewy. The roll was soggy. The wasabi looked like they had recycled it from someone else’s plate — kind of dull and old looking. The man making it for me had a runny nose and kept sniffing. Not appealing. I suspect that this is a reputable business that has suffered due to some poor choices in staffing that drove customers away. Without the crowds they used to have, I suspect they’re cutting corners on quality in order to make ends meet. My recommendation would be to shut the Hawthorne location and focus on other locations and a higher quality experience all around. «You got to know when to hold ‘em. Know when to fold ‘em. Know when to walk away. And know when to run». It’s time.

Loud, crowded with rude staff. We were seated by a very rude lady, and not given menus nor water. After being ignored awhile, we left.

I really hate writing reviews like this but here it goes. I’ve been to mio a few times with no issue. Just not this location. The sushi isn’t bad, fairly priced, I think it’s a little high, but it’s all about the location. I get It. I’m starved and make my way w a friend over to mio around 2. I’ve worked in sushi for a few years and eat it all the time, so I know what I’m ordering and have a good idea of what it should look like. I order a crab salad. Arrives with no crab, I send it back. Comes out with crab. Great. The server is cold and does not smile. She walks by a couple times and bizarrely inquires if we are ready and then says, «oh you’re still looking.» And walks off. She finally takes our order and I assert that I’d like the sashimi combo. She looks at me and says, «sushi combo b.» I tell her no and point again to what I’d like saying the name again. She nods like she understands and puts the order in. Minutes later my friends food arrives. Then, I’ll be damned, a perfect sushi combo is placed before me. I RARELY do this but I am allergic to seaweed, so I can’t eat nori. Even if I wasn’t, I do not want this… I politely tell her I ordered sashimi and I don’t want this. Here’s where it goes bad; she actually argues with me. I tell her again I do not want it. She removes it whilst staring at me almost disbelieving that I would not accept it. Then I see her put in my sashimi order without even asking me if I still want it. My friend is halfway done with his meal already. I hate when severs do things like this because to me it looks greedy and also an attempt to make the check bigger. I walk over and tell her I’m not interested in the sashimi anymore and she again argues with me. Saying I have no choice the order is already in. Its been maybe 25 seconds since she took the sushi away. I tell her I don’t care… I don’t want it. SUPER awkward interaction. I’ve never had to actually argue with a server over what was going to happen during my meal experience.

In case I haven’t mentioned that I love sushi… I love sushi. We seem to be making a grand tour of all the Mio’s in Oregon… today we hit the Hawthorne location because we were in the neighborhood, and sushi always sounds good. So fast! We were greeted by the chefs when we walked in, which was great. I love that. Quick seating, quick order, quick drinks… everything was fast. We were in a hurry, so it was nice that the staff sensed that, without making us actually feel rushed. Overall, service was great. The food was too– some of the best miso soup I’ve had a Mio Sushi, nice seaweed salad, really fresh, flavorful rolls. The fish was stunning– nigiri was absolutely beautiful and delicious. The only complaints of the whole evening; two of the rolls were cut unevenly so certain pieces were falling-apart-thin, where others were too big to fit in my mouth in one bite. Totally acceptable to me tonight because of how good it all tasted, just awkward. The other issue was that we got wooden chopsticks– not the nice ceramic kind we normally get. I just dislike them and they aren’t as easy to eat with. Still a 4.5 star experience– great food, great service, inexpensive and fast.

Is okay. I still go here often but mostly because friends like it. It’s not even close to what I’d consider good sushi but it definitely isn’t bad either. It’s just okay. The service is decent and the ambiance is just okay too. It’s pretty average and I don’t know what to say more than that in all honesty.

Great sushi and great service! Cozy atmosphere that was kid friendly for a 1 and 3 year old and the bento box was gobbled up! I’m not a huge Unagi fan but this was awesome! Salmon was delicious too! Loved the rolls and will definitely be back!

I’m usually ok with basic sushi places in PDX but this was no bueno at all! their veggie rolls were fine… but the yakitori was so bad! way too overcooked /dry and had a really weird wet dog smell to it. not coming back!

I don’t often find myself craving sushi but it does happen from time to time. I usually order something tempura battered and with spicy in the title but I’ve been branching out to things that just say spicy, even if they aren’t tempura fried. So I came here by myself and was sorta looking for a place where I wouldn’t stick out like a sore thumb. Mio was easy to blend into. The menus are dry erase, the wait staff were attentive without hovering and the chefs/line staff seemed to know what was up. I enjoy my food being in plain view any olé time(esp when cocktails are involved) that is to say, I love to lurk people’s selections, see what is popular, delicious looking or falls flat. So I sat at the bar. I ordered a spicy tempura battered something(I think there were scallops, sorry that doesn’t help) and a spicy tuna roll(non battered). They were both served on the same dish and it came up pretty quickly. Soda refills are gratis. I would def go again, esp based on the location(close to the Hawthorne Theater and the Bagdad pre show). One negative… It was a little spendy for one person who was hungry, I spent almost $ 20 and left without leftovers.

I wanted to give this place a chance and I was skeptical after reading reviews but I went ahead and tried it anyway with my two roommates, mostly because I’m not too fond of other sushi places in the area anyway. So why not? First off, most of the other reviews talked of terrible service and our service was really good. We were also the only ones in there, though. I ordered the goma salad which tasted fine, as well as the spicy tuna roll and a spider roll, both which tasted fine. The tuna looked a little worrisome but didn’t smell off and tasted good. After eating my food that wasn’t amazingly good but not terrible either, I was ready to give a three star review and consider coming back. Then, I saw my roommates’ plates. Both got a bento box with spicy chicken and vegetable tempura, and the spicy chicken tasted cheap and not particularly good. Two stars. Then, we found a gnat in one of their rice bowls and both of them left with terrible stomach aches. Now I’m down to one star, and since I had the raw fish dishes, I fear for my life. Wish me luck and Godspeed, I’ll stick with toney and his mediocre but non life threatening food.

Was in the area for work, looked this place up on Unilocal.Reviews were all over the place??? Gave it a try, glad I did! Service was great! Food was great! I’d come back anytime. I didn’t see or taste anything negative found in some reviews… I read at least one review here they thought the prices here are high. Uh… If your accustomed to eating at those around the track $ 1 plate places then I can see what your talking about but I feel this restaurant is fairly priced for what you get. You can definitely spend ALOT more on Japanese food !!

Mio Sushi seems to have the marketing and the slick menu down, but the service still leaves a lot to be desired. Even once you’re seated at the Hawthorne location, a TV screen above continues to advertise the Mio Sushi chain nonstop. Good thing that TV is silent, as it’s already too loud in there. The food was okay. It gets the three stars for that. The miso soup was good, and the rolls with real crab were presented well and were tasty. But for all the workers and servers running around, they took a good 10 min to even take our drink order, and then they managed to miss two items on our order. We also witnessed other tables trying to wave down their server as they sat ignored. Management might want to take note, as others may be canceling those portions of their order that don’t come in a reasonably expected time. The slick menu with what seemed like 40 roll choices was actually a turnoff, as it takes a long time to sort through and compare the rolls. I think they’d do better to focus on the most popular items and simplify some.

I’m a huge supporter of Mio Sushi. They have always delivered in food quality and service, well, at least at the 21st and Johnson location. I had recently visited the Hawthorne location expecting the same experience, and unfortunately I was greatly disappointed. The Hawthorne location had about 5 customers inside, yet I had to wait at least 5 minutes to even be greeted. When I first walked in, I smiled and made eye contact with an employee who was wiping down a table, and another who was just speaking with that employee, and doing nothing else. The employee who was wiping down the table – finally after 5 minutes — — then greets me and then seats me. I ordered 2 rolls, the St. Helens, and the double crunch, and it took 20 minutes to be served. I figured, maybe the kitchen staff had a huge call in order, so maybe that’s what took so long, giving them the benefit of the doubt. Excited to take my first bite into the St. Helens roll, I was slightly off put by the smell, the(artificial) crab smelled particular fishy, and the jalapeños on top were dry, and old. Anyway, I took a bite. The nori was extremely chewy and the rice was hard and dry. The double crunch was soggy, had no flavor, and tasted like batter. I asked the waiter politely if I could maybe get another double crunch roll that was more crunchy and that I wouldn’t mind paying for another roll, [I just wanted to enjoy my food!] then the waiter decided to tell me that«that’s how the roll always tastes, but if I really wanted another one, then fine. « Never going back there again.

The sushi was moderately okay. The only problem I had was there was only one napkin when the waitress said the sushi had to be eaten by hand, seeing as it would fall apart almost instantly when you picked it up with chopsticks. Overall, the food was good and the service was good. 4 stars for me.

Delicious sushi! They have a new menu featuring«Premium» sushi(Their words). My wife and I ordered two from that section and we weren’t disappointed! Very delicious! They are a bit more expensive, ~$ 12, for a roll of sushi ~6 pieces… but well worth it! I would love to come back to try the others, but not many spicy ones :( The green tea calamari is very good! Ours was a bit cold but it was still delicious(I ate it right up, they even included the baby octopi!!! OMG my favorite!!) Will be coming back!

Came here for a friends birthday and it was good! Small little cozy restaurant in the corner in Hawthorne. The seaweed salad lacked flavor and didn’t have much taste. Double Crunch Roll was good and also the Mount Fugi Roll. I don’t think you can go wrong at this place.

I like the Mio menu as a chain. I’m used to the 185th/Walker location, but that damn Coco roll gets me every time. However, you people are n00bs. You DONOTSENDANYSERVERSHOMEEARLYON4⁄20INPORTLAND. And I will never eat out again on 4⁄20 in Portland. They are across the street from New Seasons, it was 4/20, stoners were out with the munchies, and they all crawled into Mio. You should have the foresight to know what the hell is going to happen on 4⁄20. Instead, service was horrible because they didn’t know it would get busy, so they sent servers home. This might seem like a small thing, but there is a little Mexican sushi chef here that LOADS the most amazingly sliced avocado pieces on to the rolls. Specifically the Caterpillar roll. Order it and you’ll see what I mean. Instead of using half of an avocado for the entire roll, he probably uses 2 avocados per roll. I dig it. They don’t skimp out.

NOMIO, NOMIO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO Dinned there for my Birthday regretfully… Poor service and mediocre food. Arrive around 7:30 on Monday, not too many customer with quite few tables available. As a matter of fact, more people were leaving than coming in. They sat us at a corner near restrooms entrance. After ordering over $ 140 worth of sushi, I asked them to move us in the middle, but it was too much for them to pull couple of tables together. I just got a «Sorry we can’t.» Well guess what, when I don’t like the service, I do NOT reward poor service with 15% tip… actually I was so unhappy, I did not leave any tip. Well after we left, the waiter ran after us into street and start yelling at us from cross the street. Yes, that is for real… Do NOT waist your money and stress yourself out by dinning in any Mio Sushi. Like good service, excellent food; try Syun in Hillsboro; You will not be disappointed.

The Wife and I had an anniversary lately, nine years of adventure and shenanigans that would make Lucy and Ethel jealous. Grandma had the Tax Deduction for the night and we were free to go eat things that would make a five year old vomit. That there is good times for parents! We are, admittedly, sushi novices. We go a lot but usually the sushi is lazily trundling by on a conveyor, occasionally we hit a place on 82nd near Clackamas Mall that has table service. For this special night we wanted to hit a new place so it was decided that we would try Mio Sushi on Hawthorne. In the words of the Knight in Indiana Jones III, we choose wisely. It is a tastefully decorated open space, nicely lit with lots of window space. The tables are intimate and well spaced so you are not right on top of the next tables conversation. The menu is excellent, wide variety of sushi and other items both cooked and not so much. For Sushi you get a plastic menu with a grease pencil and you mark your choices. The wait-staff was just excellent, attentive without hovering and very patient with first timers to their restaurant. We highly suggest stopping in to try Mio Sushi anytime.

I used to love this Mio Sushi location. In fact, I used to be a regular at this location a few years ago. It seems there has been some major changes here over the last few years, and not for the better. The server staff has changed. There used to be some incredible servers that worked here, now they seemed distracted and scattered. And the quality of sushi has drastically declined. Sushi Standards Rating Scale: What I ordered: calamari, avocado roll, super eel, and Portland roll Total Cost: $ 22.90(before tip) Décor: Neither good, nor bad, but definitely nothing memorable. The major complaint I have are the acoustics, as it makes it ear-splitting loud at times, especially if you have loud groups or crying children. [2 stars] Creativity: As a general rule, they really miss out on the potential for creativity that sushi offers. [1 stars] Presentation: The only memorable presentation was the calamari with its cellulose strings. It offered a beautiful display bed for the calamari. They really miss the artistic boat on the sushi though. [3 stars] Freshness: Everything I tried that should have some warmth to it,(even my date’s miso) was lukewarm. The eel was mushy and as I mention below, the crab tastes pre-made, but past its prime as it is nothing but mush. [2 stars] Taste: Every thing tasted, at best, so-so. The one standout was the calamari, which was well seasoned and cooked just right. The super eel was the biggest disappointment(especially at $ 8.95) as the crab inside was more like crab salad and the overall combination of over sweet eel with crab mush, made for a very unpleasant taste and texture. [3 stars] Sustainability: When so many other sushi restaurants(even some sushi-go-rounds) have switched to bamboo chopsticks, I was disappointed to see they still used the throw-away wooden, break-apart chopsticks. There is also no mention of sustainability with their fish. [0 stars] Service: This was quite a let down, as they used to have amazing servers. The service was distracted and scattered. We were never asked the simple«how is everything.» I had to hand them our payment after they came and left our table twice without picking it up. [2 stars] Bang for your buck: At one time, I would say this Mio Sushi location was definitely worth the price, but after all the declines I have seen here I would say they are seriously overpriced. [2 stars] Overall: I am very disappointed in this location’s major decline, but caution you not to judge all Mio Sushi’s based on this location. I know the Hollywood location is much better. Don’t waste your money here. It’s just not worth it.
