Specialties
We’re all about wines that pair great with food, and making it both easy & fun for you to learn how to pair yourself. We offer classes & events in addition to wine flights, wine by the glass and a retail selection divided up by what a wine pairs well with.
80% of our stock includes organic grape growing combined with sustainable (holistic) farming practices. ‘ConsciousWine’ is a standard of grape growing & winemaking that we want both the wines and wineries we carry adhering to.
History
Established in 2013.
We officially opened on March 6, 2013. Pairings Portland Wine Shop is a manifestation of lots of ideas coming together thanks to 30 years in the fine wine business (and the last 5 years developing ConsciousWine.com).
ConsciousWine was started out of 2 frustrations: organic wine not equalling consistent quality, and winemaking being used to make wines to fit the habits of our tastebuds. I loved the way someone described it to me one day about the difference between the taste of brand & the taste of place. I became passionate about the uniqueness that each wine offered and how natural wine unfolds similarly to a good book or story (or like we do when we wake up in the morning).
One of the main qualities of these types is how they offer their magic when they’re paired up properly. Pairings Portland Wine Shop is here to make it easy & fun to discover different ways to pair wine, understand wine, and see what happens :)
Meet the Business Owner
Jeffrey W.
Business Owner
I grew up in the New York City area. My Mom & Dad went to Italy 2 years in a row when I was 12 & 13, and that was it! After a few adventures in other things I came back to my hobby and now it’s been over 30 years as a CPW (Certified Paid Wine-Know) working in a mix of retail & wholesale.
I love the history, the people, the places, and the experience of surrendering oneself into the passion. I see wine as a great vehicle of connection.
Running Suburban Wines & Spirits in Yorktown Heights, NY (’98−04) was an opportunity to start teaching classes and putting on events guiding people in comparing one thing to another while developing a comfort in exploring wine. A handpicked stash of over 2500 wines was what we had available for the wine adventurer.
I moved to Oregon in January 2006 and worked in wholesale for 2 years before starting ConsciousWine to bridge the gap between good for the planet & good for the palate wine choices focused on the wines of the West Coast of the US.
