Pearl Hardware

Until recently, I would have given Pearl Hardware a 5-​star rating due to its convenient location, good selection and friendly staff.
The reason for the 2-​star rating is that I decided to try buying paint from them. That was a BIG mistake. I bought two gallons of what I believe to be the most expensive paint the sell — Benjamin Moore’s Auora Bath and Spa at about $ 65 a gallon. They were supposed to be the same standard color picked fromm the Benjamin Moore color line-​up. The first gallon was fine. When I opened the second gallon to finish my project, however, I found that much of the pigment was puddled in the rim of the can rather than in the paint. Not wanting to break my work, I tried scooping all the pigment I could from the rim and adding back into the paint. That did not work. Even after doing my absolute best, the second can of paint was noticably lighter than the first. I painted one section of wall to see if the difference was noticable after the paint had dried overnight; it was!
It was already late, so I had to wait till the next day to take paint back to complain. I was shocked when the folks at the paint counter said that they could not see the difference between the two cans. They even held up a little test card they had painted. I could see the difference quite clearly, but they claimed to see no difference at all. Now, my walls are splotchy with uneven color, particularly because I had done all the trim with the first gallon so the trim on half the room is darker than the wall. Not only is that $ 65 dollars down the drain, it is hours of wasted work. The fact that Pearl refused to fix their error — and even denied there was an error — convinced me that I should never buy paint there again. That is NOT the type of service or quality I had hoped for from Pearl Hardware. I took a photo of the line on the wall showing where one gallon of paint ended and the next began. I’ll post them if I can figure out a way to add a photo to this review.

This is my favorite store in Portland — they have EVERYTHING! I went in on Friday and Lee helped me and he was the ABSOLUTE BEST! So helpful, and cut a piece of wood perfectly to size for me! Thank you, Lee!!! Thank you Pearl Hardware.

I just finished 2
Saturday projects made possible by the amazing folks here. It took less than a minute of aimless wandering in the screw and fastener section before someone offered to help me. I had brought 2 very specific screws that I needed to find replacements for. After two managers spent about 10 minutes pulling a dozen or more candidates, they sent me on my way with a couple to try. They were exactly spot on and I was able to repair a very old doorknob to full functionality. All of this for the sale of $ 1.25.
And I got a new spatula and chef knife on the way out because they have an amazing housewares section.
Seriously, I love you guys!

Excellent service — we find the staff to be very friendly and helpful. They have a variety of kitchen items and my husband finds the brand of tools he likes here. We always take home a pot or two from their garden section, and toys for our grandsons from the toy aisle!

So this is Pearl vs Any other store, in this case Michael’s Arts and Crafts:
Seriously? I went there (Michael’s) to get 6 small pieces of glass cut, 6“x 6″…after much calculatoring and ciphering the price was… wait for it…$ 93.00. I said 6 INCHES not feet. «Well that will be three pieces of glass, two panes per piece and 30.00 per sheet.»
Well this will be me… walking out the door and going to my local Pearl Ace Hardware where those 6 piece cost… again, wait for it…$ 8.75.
End of story.

These guys are knowledgable and as helpful as one could ever expect. Just a pleasant experience all around. They knew what I needed better than I did. Great to have them in my neighborhood.

Pearl Hardware’s customer service is simply second to none. I always receive help quickly, and the checkout lines are always extremely prompt. In this day and age, it’s rare to find a business so keen on having outstanding customer service. Definitely recommend shopping here over the big box stores, particularly in their excellent hardware section.

Incredible customer service for every problem. As a «non-​handy» homeowner, they consistently provide great advice even when it is not buying something that I thought I needed. And as a bonus, they let my dogs shop with me and give them treats at checkout.

Pearl Hardware was convenient. They took care of my key-​cutting needs easily and affordably. Everyone was friendly and helpful.

Be prepared for walking in needing 1 thing and walking out with 10. They have everything from your typical hardware items, paint, to home décor, excellent cooking accessories and even a great little area with gifts for kids (things you won’t find at other places). The staff can be hit or miss, but I would say its generally ⁸⁰⁄₂₀ (80% positive experience). My dog loves it here, too (they give her a treat at checkout).
Definitely recommend!

I love Pearl Hardware!
Yes, it is more expensive and, therefore, has a nicer, better, sometimes more visually challenging selection of those ‘normal’ house things you look for in a hardware store. The free parking out front represents a definite plus in the neighborhood.
And they allow dogs inside!
Besides, at this location I am grateful that they can make it in Portland. They should, though, especially because of their extensive collection and helpful staff.
The extra discounted days are nice and occur regularly, and with points you can save even more. As someone who just landed months ago in Portland, I recommend this hardware store when you want to combine design and functionality, and ease.

I don’t think I’ve ever had better customer service! At least 4 people checked in with me to make sure I was finding everything ok.
The wood cutting service was awesome! I had 3 dresser planks that needed to be trimmed and it was only $ 1.50.
I was scrambling to look for more things to buy since I wanted to support them so much! Go here for any and all hardware needs and home projects!
They cut keys, cut wood, paint store, etc!!!

Totally impressed with my new favorite hardware store. It is so well staffed that I never find myself wandering aimlessly as I would, in say, the Hell (Home) Depot.
I came in on Saturday with a long list of random items, including paint (which has to be mixed). I was able to get out in 30 minutes thanks to there always being someone ready to help me find things!
So great.

There were employees all over the place asking people if they needed help. I needed a little nut that attached a light to some safety glasses, and the employee who helped me found it, and then took it over to the workshop area and tightened it up perfectly. Considering I was only spending $ 0.33, great customer service!
I was also surprised at the variety of stuff they had here; all kinds of little cooking dishes and kitchen gadgets, among everything else you could think of. Kind of reminded me of a Cost Plus. I think I’ll come back to do some Christmas shopping.
And I don’t know if I’m the only person with an inexplicable love for aluminum keys, but they make them here! Only the second place I’ve ever seen that makes them.

I’m not really a «hardware-​y» person, but I’ve come by here two times to pick up things for small household projects and I have found the staff to be excellent! Both times I’ve been here, someone has approached me within minutes of entering and asked me if I need help. Both times, I haven’t known what the product I needed was called and both times the staff member had led me to the exact item I needed after I clumsily explained what I needed!
Also, they always have good input without being condescending! I needed a drill and she explained I just needed a basic one for the project I was doing and gave me advice for my project and even showed me additional materials I’d need for the project. The second time I came in they even cut down a wire protector thing for me without me even having to ask!
I really appreciate a hardware store that takes the time to help people find what they are looking for and talk to people about projects. Although the selection is a little bit smaller than a full-​on hardware store, I will definitely continue coming here for project needs in the future because of the service.

Not just nuts and bolts for home repair, but kitchen gadgets too! Barbecue and tools for the handy man or woman. Dining, dishes and accessories for the hostess or host with the mostest. Paint for your «inner» interior designer. Everything in its place and easy to shop. You break it, find out how to fix it here. Excellent help and service and a BROAD product selection in a tight, well-​organized, tidy space!

Can a hardware store get any better than this? Totally rhetorical question, because the obvious answer is no.
Since moving to Portland we’ve been frequent visitors here for everything from coaxial cable to windshield wipers to kitchen towels to key copies. Anything I’ve come looking for, I’ve been able to find; the variety of merchandise is great! Admittedly I spend most of my time browsing in the kitchen aisles whether or not I need anything, mostly because they carry many of my favorite brands at great prices. I can be quite picky about the aesthetics and feel of everything from coffee cups to dishtowels, but there’s so much I love here.
Plus, there’s parking right out front (so key for the Pearl!) and I’ve never had anything but very friendly and helpful service from whomever’s working. It’s true one-​stop-​shopping for anything home-​related. And they love their non-​human customers too; the checkout counters are covered with photos of people’s pets, a nice little community touch. Go put yours up today!

Ace really is «the place with the helpful hardware folks.» The jingle used to be «hardware man» but that’s just not PC these days. But whatever.
Whenever I have specialty hardware needs I march right down the street to the Ace Hardware in The Pearl, not just because it’s spitting distance but because it’s awesome.
Here’s a fine example of its awesomeness: today was the day I decided I was going to fix my hookah. Lee figured out the best way to fix it, then proceeded to fix it, then decided it was so fun fixing it he wasn’t going to charge me for the labor or for the threading tool necessary to fix it. How about that? How about how awesome is that! Thank you Lee!
The fine folks here have always been rock stars and worthy of a five star review. Today’s fantastic service really prompted me to get off my duff and finally get it done.
2014 — Review # 6

«May I help you find what you’re looking for this evening?», asked the friendly Ace Hardware man as I wandered down the aisle.
«Maybe», I replied. «I’m looking for a well trained husband.»
«Ah!», he said, «Aisle 8 near the light bulbs.»
As it turns out, the helpful hardware man was right. Just the husband I was looking for, buying specialty light bulb to replace one in a reading lamp that went kaput.
I got side tracked in gathering mode while hubby was hunting for this bulb. Easy to do here, become a gatherer. Because in addition to having just about anything you can possibly imagine you would need for household repair, they have lots of fun things for nesting. Like Colonial Candle unscented tapers in every color in the spectrum and pure beeswax honey candles from tapers to pillars to votives. Like Joseph-​Joseph cool art glass food prep boards. Like aisles of Christmas décor. Like Caspari cocktail napkins. Like real glass containers for food storage and made in the US no less. Like Oxo salad spinners in two sizes. Like… well, you get the picture of why I got side tracked on the way to aisle 8.
Well stocked everything, friendly service, accessible entry from parking, clear access aisles wide enough to shop without an obstacle course and reasonable prices to boot. What’s not to like? Well, the parking lot is inadequate but so it goes in Portland.
We’re fans!

Prices are sort of high here but the very fact I can walk here from home makes that not a huge deal. Everyone here is helpful and I have yet to come in with an item in mind and walk out empty handed.
They have so much here for a smaller hardware store. They had the duster and cleaning things I needed, a tea diffuser, tools and washer tubes I needed.
A side note you guys totes need to get the dryer lint cleaner they have. I pulled out like four sweaters worth of dryer lint from the vent and now am hoping my dryer will work better.
If that doesn’t work I will just start a dryer lint farm… who wants a tour?
