Specialties
Pistils is a thoughtfully curated nursery and mercantile that specializes in indoor and outdoor plants, home goods and urban farm supply. In the nursery, you’ll always find a diverse selection of unique indoor plants, from lush tropicals, to gorgeous succulents and cacti, to Tillandsia Air Plants big and small. We also carry an ever-evolving selection of work from local makers.
From tried and true perennials, to hardy natives and gorgeous ornamentals, our outdoor nursery appeals to amateur gardeners connoisseurs alike. As our climate affords us the ability to grow food nearly all year-round, we also offer a wide array of edibles — vegetable starts and seeds, bare root stock, fruits trees and more. Though we aren’t currently carrying chicks, we support the urban farm movement in Portland by providing red wriggler composting worms, chicken-keeping supplies, fertile hen eggs and mason bee boxes.
History
Established in 2001.
We started Pistils Nursery to create a unique gathering place for people who are as passionate and curious about plants, urban homesteading and innovative design as we are; a place for discovery, conversation, and above all, sharing.
In 2001, the urban farm movement was just awakening in Portland, and we wanted to create a place to bring a little bit of country living into the city. As much as Mississippi Ave has gone through a transformation in the 13 years we’ve been in business, so too has the nursery: in the fall of 2013, we remodeled our brick-and-mortar shop and brought in a diverse array of new offerings, from specialty indoor plants to work from local artists and makers. Swing by and tell us what you think!
Meet the Business Owner
Mégan T.
Business Owner
Raised-up in Boise, Idaho, Mégan has an abiding passion for the Western frontier and all things nature. She has the heart of a cowgirl and the soul of a gardener. And although she loves living in Portland and running her small, mom-and-pop business Pistils Nursery, she would almost always rather be riding horses on the range… especially painted ponies.
