BEWARE: these guys will rip you off with a smile and a kind voice. Manipulation at it’s finest.
SITUATION: I buy a Hosa cable CYR-​301. ¼ mono to dual rca. Sales guy says it’s $ 12.00 but he’ll give me a «discount» of $ 2.00. So, cable is now $ 10.00 .
This is NOT a discount.
The same cable goes for $ 6.99 at other stores in town; including other mom and pop stores.

After spending quite a bit on a specially-​ordered mixer, I waited eagerly for them to call me when it arrived. After a month I called them, to be told that it hadn’t been ordered and they’d get on it, and call me right back when they had ordered it. The next day I called to verify, and yes it had been ordered. No apologies for my time wasted, nothing.
Later, I wanted to order a case for said mixer. After they adamantly told me that the 10″ case wouldn’t fit my 10″ mixer, I ordered the 12″ case through them per their recommendation. It was huge, and so I asked another retailer if the 10″ would fit my mixer specifically. They said yes, and it does. I did not order the 10″ case from Platinum, and I won’t be ordering anything else. It’s a shame, really.
Their record selection is meager or mainstream, their customer service is subpar. I understand if you want to rent big guns, these guys got em. But so do Studio Instrument Rentals & Prosound on the east side.

These guys have been around forever! I bought my first mixer from them 20 years ago. I always check them out first. BTW the rental department is awesome if you just don’t need to own everything! Way better than going to the big box stores like G Center! These guys know there stuff!

These guys are great! I needed some speakers for events that we produce. We travel a lot and had to get the speakers delivered to our hotel. It took some extra phone calls to get the drop ship in place, but everything showed up. One of the speakers was not working. NOT Platinum’s fault. I had FedEx send the speaker back and when it arrived, it was all smashed up. They ordered me a new one along with 2 more speakers I needed. FedEx eventually covered the loss, but without the help of the team at Platinum (Thanks Paul!) I would have had a longer road ahead of me getting my issues with FedEx sorted. These guys go the extra mile and this guy REALLY appreciated it.

Paul the turntable specialist I dealt with provided the most Excellent customer service. Extremely professional, polite, and helpful. Preordered my new turntables ;Pioneer PLX 1000’s, from New vinyl which is Platinums EBay store. They are simply the best when it comes to Dj equipment and vinyl selection. If you want to buy from people who know what’s up visit the store on second ave or the website or New Vinyl on EBay. Thanks Paul for all your help. Looking forward to doing more business with you very soon!

I felt like renting a strobe light for a little house party because we should all be silly sometimes, eh? Cue Platinum Records. They rented me the smallest one they had for $ 15 (reasonable). This strobe light was some industrial ugly beat-​up cracked relic from the 90s but whoa did it get the job done!
Was quite hungover the next day and kept asking to return the strobe later than the agreed-​upon time… you know, when I came back to the land of the living. The guy was as cool as can be about it and I never incurred any extra fees.
Point is, use these guys. The equipment may not be flashy but it sho’ ‘nuf works and the customer service I got was terrific.

I have been a customer for years. I’ve bought a vestax mixer, some akai controllers, and as of today a pdx 3000 from these guys. They are always very helpful, and have the best selection of DJ equipment in town. I also like their selection of battle records for scratching. I will continue to be a customer for a long time to come.

Good selection of records (we were specifically looking at house and techno). It’s great that they have listening stations and loaner headphones to audition vinyl. They also sell a bunch of DJ equipment. It was definitely good stuff. I didn’t check out pricing extensively, but It’s really hard for places like this to compete with online stores. The staff was friendly and helpful.

I love Platinum records n Sound. I have been going there for Dj cases and mixers and accessories for years. They treat you like a rock star every time w no baloney and friendly service. If they don’t have it, they will order it or you. A+++

this is seriously the worst record store i’ve ever been to in terms of how they treat their customers. i’m a really chill guy. i don’t need a lot of attention when shopping. i prefer when employees leave me alone actually. but these washed up loser ex-​DJs seriously acted like i was a serious pain in the ass to them. SO uncomfortable and irritated when i would ask them just a couple simple questions about a product and couldn’t even acknowledge my presence when i walked in at all. totally representative of the loser techno/​house scene that act pretentious about music that is actually really generic and blows. there’s good techno and dance music out there but don’t even think about finding it here. their gear is overpriced too. i am boycotting this place for life.

In Portland we like to support local. I like to support local. I’ll pay more to support local.
Customer service here on multiple visits is sub Guitar Center, unless you are a dance party hot girl, like the one at the counter ahead of me, or DJ bud of the staff, which I am not.
I was patient and made a simple sales request of them. Never heard back. Why would you buy anything Platinum sells, when you can go to Amazon, B&H or elsewhere? Because those non-​local businesses acknowledge customers.
I have nothing against lifestyle businesses. But when you can get better customer service online than local in person, there is something wrong.

I had 2 Technics 1210s grounded and the right and left channels replaced for an excellent price. Their technician, Gus, also repaired my mpc 2000xl that I shorted out when trying to repair the backlight myself. I asked for an explanation of where I went wrong and he gave clear detail without talking over my head. I recommend his work always but you really need to do a little research on whatever machine you take to him so he is not going into it blindly. That will help him know the time it will take and the approximate cost on the front end.
Overall, customer service is descent. I see some complaints but they are in the middle of downtown for crying out loud. As far as the counter guys go, they are not there to hold your hand. Do not walk in acting like a punk and you won’t walk out feeling like a pussy.
Thanks for your help guys and I will see you when I am in a pinch again.

I still could not understand why people who work in these type of stores feel as if the customer should be chasing for service and begging of their expertise. The place is real dark and unfriendly. I was never noticed as I stepped inside even though a dude looked at me. Pretty common in these stores, I guess.
Do these places only hire local musicians that are hungover or not friendly when it comes to customer service?
Since it’s the only record shop that carries lots of house music, I guess i’ll be coming back… or not?

Huge dj/​production equipment selection and the best spot for electronic music. Staff can be a little questionable sometimes, but it comes with the territory in places like this. The only real beef I have with the place is their absolute price gouging when it comes to 1200 parts. I know they are one of the only places where you can get parts locally, but c’mon…you can’t reasonably expect people to pay 4x what it costs to get the parts direct from Panasonic/​Technics can you (even with overnight shipping you come out so far ahead it’s crazy).

I used to buy records in Portland at this place for one reason, lack of options. The sales staff was composed of (probably still is) of local DJ’s who I had no interest in going out to hear spin. Second only to the attitude that they dished out in large helpings.
