Functional Medicine
Functional Medicine Specialists like myself have undergone additional training beyond medical school and residency to better treat Fibromyalgia, CFS, depression, anxiety, Hypothyroidism, hormone imbalances, and a wide variety of other condition where medication either hasn’t worked or has caused significant side effects.
History
Established in 1996.
While a partner with The Portland Clinic Family Practice department I saw a growing number of patients with new conditions such as fibromyalgia and CFS for which there were no good treatments. I also saw many patients with depression, anxiety, IBS, menopause, PMS, MS, Parkinson’s disease, hypertension, ADD, diabetes and a wide variety of other conditions that were not responding optimally to the medications we MDs were taught to use. I decided to enhance my medical training by specializing in Functional Medicine. This relatively new branch of medicine draws heavily on the newest research regarding the biochemical causes of these conditions. Using this research I can come up with more effective therapies for people who have fallen through the cracks of the typical medical clinic. These may include medications, diet modifications, amino acids, vitamins, minerals and/or hormone replacement. I decided to open a small private clinic in 1996 to treat these complicated problems.
