Sun drop, Oregon Kiss, Jalepeno bark! O my worth all the walking I did from downtown as no one had herd of this place! The flavors were ritch and diffrent then what you will find in a store ect.
Need to go here again!

I was so hyped, on my way to my favorite little chocolate shop in the world. I was ready to order the hot chocolate, which isn’t like any hot chocolate I have ever tasted before. Maybe some jalapeño chocolates or some salty caramels, the possibilities were endless.
Then like some bad dream the shop was closed for good. I pinched myself it didn’t work. I asked some random delivery driver, what was going on and he told me the hard truth, no chocolate for you. Why!!!
I am glad to see that sahagun still has products for sale. But it’s not the same. There was something very special about this little chocolate shop. I am grateful that I had the chance to check this place out when it was open.
Please open again I will owe you big time, or figure out a way to ship hot chocolates via Internet.

Uh oh, I’m in trouble now…
My husband things I’m nuts for spending $ 4 on a cup of coffee… Now I spend almost that on a single bite of chocolate!
I have only tried the Luscious Caramel, but it was SO good, I’ll have a hard time moving on to something else. You won’t find Sahagun in their own storefront anymore, but they offer a wide selection at Cacao Drink Chocolate.
These little morsels are really sinfully delicious, but pretty spendy. I work a couple hours a week just to offset my new chocolate addiction…

Success can be a double-​edged sword.
The business has changed from a small café to focus on wholesale customers. After a few months when they were open on Saturdays only, the shop has now closed to walk-​in customers. Have no fear, you can still get your KA-​POW! bar or other Sahagún chocolate delights through their website or at one of these local shops:
Personally, I suggest you pick up Elizabeth’s chocolate at Cacao.

Oregon bark. Caramels with salt. Chocolate soda. I’m sold. I recommend this place to everyone I know that visits Portland, and I try to make it there when I’m in town. Not only are the chocolates delicious, but the shop has a quaint artisan feel.

After reading multiple reviews on Unilocal and other various publications I was really expecting the best when I stepped into the small but quaint chocolate shop, Sahagun.
As the shop is only open on Saturdays, I expected a wait and was happy to browse. From the reviews I decided to go with the Hot Chocolate, the Oregon Kiss, and the Luscious Caramel. All of which I ordered to go so that my boyfriend could experience this must have chocolate. The chocolates where boxed in a small Chinese to go box and the hot chocolate in a paper cup. I appreciate the fact that environmentally conscious materials were being used!
I took my first sip of the highly rated Hot Chocolate and was instantly left wondering why it was so loved by other reviewers. I have sadly had better hot chocolate. I guess if I had to describe it, it tasted like cocoa powder (which it is not apparently, it claims to be pure melted chocolate) and had no sweet taste. At least the temperature was perfect.
The chocolates proved to be much better than the Hot Chocolate. The Oregon Kiss was perfectly crafted and the texture was wonderful. You could definitely taste the hazelnuts. The Luscious Caramel was amazing! You really do have to consume it in one bite to experience this one. It was the perfect mix of sweet and salty. The only downside for me was the price at $ 2.25 for one chocolate (note that they did have some that were less expensive). I guess it would be because these are «Handmade» chocolates.
Lastly, I felt that the owner was rather impersonal. I like to be warmly greeted and was left wanting more. She had a chance to blow me away with great hospitality and did not. At least some kind of small talk would have been nice. There was an awkward silence between us and the customers in line behind me. At least smile and ask me if I have ever been in or what kind of chocolate I am looking for. After all you are in the service business.

Chocolate for the Soul. I’m dead serious I can literally feel this chocolatiers goods through the fibers of my being. And I am NOT a «sweet» person by any means. Someone had to convince me to go here, one time, and that was it.
The tiny store offers a piece called «Elixer» or «Miracle Pill.» I don’t know if they’ve been medically proven but they work for me! Talk about a pick me up, it’s a good thing they aren’t spinning their craft in my kitchen because it’d be a daily ritual.
Some of the best chocolate on the planet. If you don’t go for the local fair you can always taste some of cocoas purest form from around the world.
They don’t have much in the way of chairs, but who are we kidding you’re going to eat all of this in the car before you make it home.

I would live here if I could. But it’s very tiny, and I don’t want to get in the way of other people getting their delicious chocolate.
If you only have enough money for ONE THING here, make sure it’s a cup of their delicious, over-​the-​top hot chocolate. SO GOOD! I think they might use heavy cream to make it, but I’m ok with that :)
Their chocolates are good, too — so if you have some spare change, pick up some of that! I am partial to the Salted Caramel in a bittersweet shell. And a friend let me try some of their KA-​POW! which is like a chocolate bar, only get this — it’s made from coffee beans, not cocao nibs! WOAH. It’s so good.

Phenomenal. I barely know where to start except to urge you to go here. We went around 11 AM and were ready to go back before lunch. Really, though, we just mainly lamented that, living out of state, we can’t have this chocolate regularly in our lives. (Regularly like hourly, apparently). And yeah, we really talked about how sad that made us. For the rest of the day.*
Anyway! The chocolates! If I HAD to chose only one favorite, it would be the sundrop. Sunflower butter + honey + chocolate covering = perfection. I may add sunflower butter to everything now, I’m not sure. Bliss. I got 2 to give to friends and I have to stop thinking about them now so that I don’t eat them myself.
Oregon kiss — this was a bit more of a typical chocolate, with the classic hazelnut/​chocolate combination, which is one of my favorites. I think I was slightly confused about this one initially because when I saw it online I thought it was a cupcake (this was before I realized it’s specifically a chocolate shop). But it’s good — in most other chocolate places, this would be the best item sold, but my favorite thing about Sahagun’s is the pairing of more unusual flavor combinations (and not just your typical «unique» flavors like chili or lime or lavendar or whatever trendy thing — no, actual thoughtful mixings that may seem like they wouldn’t particularly work out but they DO because this place is owned by a genius).
We also tried a variety of barks which were fun and avidly shared and devoured. I reiterate: created by a genius. I request more salty ones. But really, no wrong can be found.
I got a Ka-​Pow! bar for a friend who likes coffee more than me. It was wise to have samples out of it, because I didn’t understand what a coffee bar was. It has a nice texture and definitely was coffee-​ish, but lost a bit of its appeal when it was discovered that it may only be glorified coffee white chocolate. But, a neat idea.
I also want to add that the owner was amazingly friendly and adorable. She was happy to chat with us about what destinations to add to our foodie tour of Portland, AND was very gracious when I put my foot in my mouth about not wanting to eat bbq in Portland, given that her husband runs Podnah’s (for the record, I DO want to go there. It’s just that I’m normally stuffed with baked goods when in Portland).
I’m also impressed (both with the writers and with the shop) that it’s highlighted by Jane and Michael Stern. I don’t ALWAYS agree with them, but here they’re right (ie we agree). Anyway, this clearly is going to be one place I will always stop by while in Portland.
*Um, in writing this review, I’ve realized it looks like you can get some things shipped… There go my savings.

Tried a few things here — was very impressed with the drinking chocolate. It’s maybe a tad better that Cacao’s, which is no small feat, but it’s also quite a bit more expensive. The cardamom truffle was not particularly cardamom-​y though — just ok. If you like dark chocolate and coffee, you’ll like the coffee bar. It’s a cute store, but I get intimated easily by foodie type owners, so I think I’m just gonna go back to Cacao from now on…

They had yummy hot chocolate. It was $ 5, a little on the expensive side. They give a lot, so it ll be a good idea to make it a «to go order

Sahagún Handmade Chocolates is the best kept secret in all of Portland. My favorite items are the hot chocolate and the hand-​made fresh salted buttery caramels. The candied Meyer lemon peels and homemade sodas are also quite good. The hot chocolate is created using pure melted chocolate and contains no added sugar. Pure bliss! Different chocolates are featured throughout the year.
A few years ago I assisted the owner, Elizabeth, during the holiday season. I got to see firsthand the amount of thought and labor that goes into these chocolate creations. I was completely impressed with the attention to detail and had the opportunity to speak with many loyal customers.
Portland is extremely fortunate to have a shop like Sahagún’s, and it’s just one more reason why I love this town

I know I should be raving about the handmade chocolates here and yes the Cardamom and Lavender Truffles are silky, creamy, and absolutely divine. However, because we trekked across town in 90+ degree heat to find the store, what left a lasting impression from our visit to Sahagun was the B-​Side Chile Limón Soda. The soda is made with chile infused syrup with freshly squeezed lemon juice and sears a warm path of spicy down your throat with a delicious punch of sour at the end that is simply freaking amazing. It’s a wonder no one thought of it before but I’m glad someone finally did. So. Good.

I found Sahagun chocolates when Elisabeth was still in the Portland Farmers market, and have been thrilled to have her open more than just once a week.
The chocolates here are to be slowly enjoyed. Each bite offers a special taste of some infused wonder usually local. From mint to lavender, her caramels are to die for, salty and semi-​soft. Her chocolate bark combinations are great too.
And as one of the few non-​coffee drinker’s in Portland I have fallen in love with the hot chocolate. It reminds me of the wonderful hot chocolate I have with my kids when we visit my father in Switzerland. So go now and get some chocolate but don’t drink the chocolate too late or you’ll be up late.

Today marks the beginning of the weather for layering clothing time of year. It’s chilly & brisk, and with 2 of the 3 boys along for the day, it seemed as tho’ hot chocolate was in our future. I had heard tell of a small place with fabulous chocolates, so we made a point of hunting down the elusive Sahagun. It is tiny & located in an area I can’t say I will be spending much time (think adult costume shops with lurid window displays…) and it wasn’t much fun navigating around a large & angry individual (who certainly gave the appearance of being a… well…I’ll just come out with it: a pimp) yelling epithets at a woman who looked mighty haggard. So, yeah, the location is not the best.
Tiny shop with very cozy European sensibilities. It may be Third World they scour for their special chocolate varieties, but it is First World pricing. The chocolates displayed in the case are precious & beautiful to look upon. The hot chocolate we consumed was tasty. i don’t know… was it the best I have ever had? No… it was good. The woman behind the counter was pleasant… things were fine. I am not certain I would make a special effort to come here specifically again, tho’ if in the neighborhood, I’d stop in. I did see some beautiful chocolate treats I would give the boys’ teachers for Day of the Dead. So, I will be back. Hopefully the man on the corner has worked things out. And the woman is safe… walking past that scene really gave me the creeps, but it has nothing to do with the shop. Just be forewarned that the area is a tad sketchy.

Sahagun is located across the 405 overpass from the Pearl, but it might as well be 20 miles away, as there’s not even a hint of Pearl District uppitiness in this establishment. Sahagun is like the little mom & pop chocolate shop on the corner. It’s completely devoid of all corporate feel, and that’s a welcome sight for these sore eyes.
The woman behind the counter was friendly and helpful when I visited. She offered a selection small in quantity, but a wide variety of options. And these options are far from the usual suspects. The DeVries Costa Rican and the Cardamom truffles are two great examples we tried. They’re both really complex combinations of flavors of a kind I’ve not experienced in any other truffle I’ve ever had. Mom was a big fan.
My one issue — it closes at 6, and I may be the only one, but I want chocolates no earlier than 6:30. But that’s a minor complaint hardly worth losing a star over.
Bottom line: definitely ranks in the top two of Portland’s chocolate shops.

The owner had a bad, snooty attitude and her chocolate was nothing to write about. It was hot, I walked in, asked her to tell me about the chocolate and her place (there was nobody else inside and I thought it might be a fun way to enjoy the place). She gave me a quick run through but seemed quite put-​out about it and made me feel like I didn’t belong in her store. ?!
I ordered a couple pieces anyway and was disappointed. I consider myself pretty well-​versed in chocolates since I have had them all over the world. At least I can say I know what I like, and it wasn’t her stuff.

I’ve never tried anything I didn’t like here, but some things are better than others and it’s not exactly cheap so if you’re looking to get the most bang for your buck, here are my favorites:
1) Salted Caramel Chocolates — so delicious.
2) Hot Chocolate — best. hot chocolate. ever.
3) Chocolate Bark — made with various yummy ingredients like dried cherries, spicy exploded corn (!), pepitas
The shop is really cute and it’s fun to order a hot chocolate and a caramel and sit by the window, reading (there are only 4 – 5 seats in the place, though).

Some friends of ours recently visited Portland and promised us some chocolate covered caramels from Sahagun to thank us for picking them up from the airport. Totally worth it.
The chocolate covered caramels literally explode in your mouth. They actually come with instructions to eat them in a single bite because the caramel comes gushing out. The caramel part has a slightly salty, slightly buttery flavor that melds perfectly with the chocolate. The best part is at the end when you’re sucking on the dark chocolate which still has a little caramel residue.
First they bring back Voodoo Donuts to share and now this.

I moved away, and next to Stumptown coffee, this is the café I miss the most.
They serve Stumptown, which is no surprise as you can’t get much better coffee anywhere else. But what sets Sahagun apart is their amazing chocolate. I normally don’t care much for hot chocolate, but I have never had hot chocolate half as good as Sahagun’s. Maybe because it’s real melted chocolate, not some strange powder produced by one of the world’s largest corporations.
Anyway, inside the lush red interior they also have truffles and chocolate bark, candied lemon peels and other goodies. And soda. This is an adults’ candy shop.
