Established in 1936.

Portland based Shleifer Furniture Company has been part of the Portland business community since 1936, when Sam and Jake Shleifer began furnishing homes to a growing population. Then, as now, Shleifer Furniture was respected as a source for quality home furnishings at exceptional values.

That philosophy has not changed over the 70 plus years. While we always focus on great values and quality, our personal service and product selection are what truly distinguish Shleifer Furniture from other furniture retailers.

Stuart Shleifer is the third generation family member to manage Shleifer Furniture. Established in 1936, the company goals have not changed. An active member in the community, Stuart has been involved in the redevelopment of the Central Eastside Historic District. Our historic building is a cornerstone of the neighborhood, and is filled with three floors of beautiful furniture and mattresses.

It doesn’t really matter since they’re going out of business, but I just wanted to get my frustration out I guess…
It started out as a great experience, I liked my salesman which is primarily the reason I bought. I was happy with my new bed thinking I got an unbelievable deal but if it’s too good to be true it usually is.
Furniture and Jewelry is a 300% mark-​up, I should’ve done my research before purchasing but I got overly-​excited and trusted them. Long story short, I ended up purchasing a mattress and bed frame, that were the floor models, for what I could’ve spent on something brand new. I still got a discount, but only about $ 100 compared to the $ 6000 discount my salesman had told me I was getting. Fine ok, I’m in sales I get it, that’s how business works. When I came back to explain my dissatisfaction they brought out a soured old general manager who tried to intimidate me and bully me. He wouldn’t listen or let me speak and got very angry, and to be fair we also got angry so the situation escalated more than I would’ve liked. The only thing that saved the situation was Shleifer himself came out calmly and did what he could to make it better.
I still regretted spending the money I did, which was a lot for me, but we all have to learn these lessons I guess. Then I picked it up at the warehouse and found two huge rips in my new mattress and it was covered in coffee stains. I had a complete panic attack since I spent $ 2000 and felt poorly treated.
The last thing I will say, is that the financing for 6 months is put on a credit card that is issued to your name with an interest rate of 30% after the 6 months. I knew about that, but didn’t know I would have another credit card to contend with.
I don’t think this is a bad company by any means, but I will say that what began as one of the most exciting purchases of my young adult life turned out to be, by far, the most stressful and upsetting.
Do your homework before you shop there, be mindful of the extreme mark up, and have your furniture delivered so the warehouse workers don’t completely ruin it. All sales are final, so sleep on it before you decide to purchase.

Went in a few times to look at sectionals, ad DJ was very helpful. We found a great option and ordered it, only to get home and realize it was too big for our space. Graciously, Shleifer allowed us to order a smaller sectional and even change the color, even during the quitting business sale. Excellent service!

I’m going to miss them when they close shop.
Here’s what I’ll miss:
Reasonably priced mid-​range furniture at market prices.
Frequently willing to match offers from other sellers in the area.
Parking is easy and on street.
Carry a lot if items from local manufacturers, especially sofas and mattresses.
Reasonable delivery terms.
What I won’t miss:
Sales approach is very traditional, somewhat like a car dealer.

Better late than never, didn’t want to forget to give these guys a shout out, My husband and I just moved across the country to the Portland area to be close to family, and we left a lot of furniture behind in Texas before we left. We needed a couch urgently, as sitting on the carpet to watch TV was getting old… we happened to be in the area exploring, saw this store, stopped in an now realize that was the best decision ever.
We found a beautiful sectional, on sale, and we got the upgrades (down insert and stain coating) as part of the sale. Sales people were super friendly and not pushy at all, which we really appreciated. We looked around for a couple hours, went home and thought about it, and came back three days later to purchase the couch. It was delivered to us THE SAME DAY, set up completely in our home. One of the cushions was defective (noticed by the delivery /​set up crew, not by us) so they put in an order to have it fixed. This took maybe two weeks? and we just had to go in when it was convenient and pick up the cushion, no biggie.
The whole process was so professional, quick and hassle-​free, thanks a million! We love our couch (bought in July) and couldn’t be happier!

I recently posted a one star review for Shleifer Furniture. I take back every single word and would give more stars if I could. Mr. Shleifer called me personally (on a day the store is closed!!) to remedy the situation. He was an absolute professional and was beyond gracious. Now it is I that must apologize for the original review I gave. My upmost apologies for the misunderstanding. Thank you for taking such great care of me!

I went in for their «going out of business» sale. Everything was still insanely overpriced. $ 1100 for an accent chair? It’s no wonder they are going out of business with prices like those.

I would avoid Shleifer Furniture.
Ordered a matching set of furniture. 1 out of the three pieces, a bookcase, arrived damaged with an entire back panel knocked loss. Delivery men said front office would call to arrange a swap. After not hearing back from the front office had to call in and hound them a couple times to address the issue. Seems like they just wanted me to forget about the damage and accept the piece.
They then proceeded to deliver a second bookcase with obvious damage, which they claimed they inspected and was good before they sent out. The top railing was pried away as if something heavy was set on top of it or lashed down too hard. Again seemed like pulling teeth but they finally ordered a replacement.
After waiting a long time for the replacement, they delivered a third one, again «pre-​inspected», and arrived damaged. Structurally fine this time but lots of scratches and chipped veneer.
Only options they gave we was either accept bookcase for a pittance of a discount compared to how long it would take a repair the item or to return and be left with 2⁄3 of a matching set.
Sort of screwed me either way but returned the damaged bookcase. Also stuck me with the delivery charges, which I only got because of the bookcase as other items where smaller and could have handled myself. Along with wasted quite a bit of my time having to come home from work for each of 4 deliveries/​pickups.
Bottom line if you want to waste lots of time and effort to get damaged furniture only to return them in the end then Shleifer Furniture is the place to go.

If you’re looking for a place that carries furniture that is medium to higher end, this is it. I was seeking a bookshelf that wasn’t too expensive, made of veneered plywood, not particle board in the structural parts like shelves and frame (not the backing), and they had several selections so I could order just the size I wanted. I also saw that the carry Ekornes Stressless chairs, which are a higher end product. So, there’s a good quality selection there. We received very helpful service from Lori Hope, who listened to our needs and offered good selections and advice.

My boyfriend and I had just moved to Portland and were furniture shopping. We were on the way back to City Liquidators when I saw Schleifer’s. We decided to stop in and have a look. Nat was immediately there to assist us and explained that they would beat City Liquidators pricing. They happened to have the same exact couch that we were looking for. Nat was very knowledgable, helpful and friendly. My boyfriend and I are particularly not fond of pushy sales tactics and Nat didn’t come off slimy at all. He helped us assess our needs and showed us a queen bed that was just what we were looking for. He is also a design consultant and helped us pick out a couch fabric that would match our design idea. The entire process was smooth and painless and actually quite fun. Our furniture was shipped quickly and a few weeks later when our couch was going to come later than expected, Nat worked it out so that we got our couch when we needed it. I would highly recommend this store and having Nat help you find what you need for your home.

Just moved to NE Portland and needed a modern/​comfy sectional for our new space. We were pretty burned out after having pretty bad experiences at Macy’s, Ashley, Pottery Barn and more. some friends recommended Shleifer — THANK GOD!
We were helped by Nat, who showed us a variety of options, explained configuration choices and quality levels without being obnoxious or pushy. It was like an old friend sharing furniture trade secrets… seriously. We decided on an amazing sectional, got to pick the fabric for body and pillows, purchased and set delivery all within 45min. Super easy, actually fun, very informative without being pushy or pretentious. To top it all off, we got a GREAT DEAL! This was sooo much better than any other furniture place we went to. I would highly recommend Shleifer to friends and family. We’ll be back soon.

Not just a cliché — another satisfied customer!
New to town, we needed furniture for our living room. We identified the sofa we wanted online and Shleifer was one of a handful of authorized dealers.
After visiting or speaking with all of them, Shleifer stood out as the best in terms of selection, customer service, and price. Our saleswoman, Joy, was extremely helpful and knowledgable about the brand of furniture we’d chosen and others in the store — without being pushy or trying to force a sale.
When we found the sofa priced for less at one of the other dealers, we called Shleifer to see if they would work with us. The general manager absolutely did. We would have liked a bit more communication after the purchase, but a quick phone call confirmed the arrival of the sofa at the warehouse and our delivery date. The actual delivery a few days later was smooth and right on time.
We’re happy to have found an old school family-​run business here in Portland. Shleifer has earned a repeat customer.

Stopped in a few weeks ago to look for a comfortable rocking/​gliding chair for our nursery. They have a decent furniture selection overall, but wasn’t super impressed with their chair inventory.
The service was good. A bit odd that the female customer service agent was eating lunch at her desk, but maybe they don’t provide a break room area for employees? Definitely didn’t appreciate seeing the younger male customer service employee sleeping on the couch when you first walked in. We were in there for about 20 – 30 minutes and he was sleeping the entire time.

Thank you Shleifer Furniture for trying so hard to make things right. Your staff deserves 5-​stars. My Stanton sectional on the other hand… zero-​stars.
I bought a sectional back in August only to get it home and discover that the alignment of the pieces was way off. Shleifer Furniture tried very hard to have the problem fixed, even sent a repair person out to my home to dismantle and replace the sofa back. When attempts to repair didn’t work out the furniture store arranged for a complete replacement of the sectional. Sadly, the replacement had the same problem as the first couch and it was sent back to the factory.
I appreciate tremendously Shleifers efforts to fix and even replace the couch and when those things didn’t work out they were prompt to refund the purchase price without a hassle.

Jerry and the floor manager were friendly, nice and helpful. We came in for a particular section from Ominia. They gave us our space to pick out the style and leather. Then they were very aggressive with the price, gave my wife and I a deal we couldn’t walk away from. Come to Schliefer, ask for Jerry and buy knowing you’ll get a competitive price with no haggling.

Lori @ Shleifer is amazing. My wife and I have had a nightmare trying to find a glider recliner or even a quality furniture store in the Portland area and Shleifer is a home run! We walked in and they were incredibly busy (no surprise because of their great selection and people) but Lori found time to make us feel welcome, identify our needs, and take us to the perfect product within seconds of entering the store. All in all it took 30 minutes from walking in to picking out a piece, fabric, and completing the purchase. Shleifer Furniture reminds me of a dependable, family run furniture store on Main Street in Anytown, USA. The difference is that it’s on bustling Grand Avenue, where it travels north in a one-​way direction, while MLK travels south, also in a one-​way direction, behind the store. They even have some parking.
They have kept those more «old school» Portland values of politeness and «soft sell.» Every time I’ve walked in to look around, I’ve been helped in both a detailed and courteous manner. And I have gone into Shleifer Furniture to the tune of about 6 times for every purchase!
The last item I bought from them was a Mission styled dinette set, with wood chairs with the typical wood slats in the chair backs and forest green upholstery on the chair seats. I really liked it. Picking it up went smoothly. Most importantly, the salesperson was a true gentleman and very pleasant to deal with. I’d still have it, except that I was moving, a friend of mine needed it, and came by to pick it up.
The best thing about Shleifer is that you can order items and fabric selections are extensive. At some major stores, it could be dark brown and burnt orange as the two color choices, for example, and they can’t customize and come up with another solution. Here, if it’s not on the floor, they can have it made using another fabric or offer other things which can be ordered. Some items are also manufactured in the general area, which is good for local area businesses.
It’s not Neiman Marcus … or even Macy’s. Shleifer’s furniture is around the «middle of the road» price point. I think Shleifer is one of the better independent furniture stores in the Portland area and I have always included them when shopping for furniture.
