History

Established in 1852.

Shreve & Co. was established in 1852 just four years after the discovery of gold in the California hills. The Shreve’s, George and Samuel, quickly developed a sterling reputation based on the caliber of their wares — only the finest of timepieces, gems and jewelry — and a level of customer service that attracted the most notable citizens of San Francisco as their clientele. In 1906, Shreve moved into a beautiful, new Beaux Arts building on the corner of Post Street and Grant Avenue that continues to serve as the company flagship store to this day. One of the oldest independent jewelers in the country, Shreve & Co. enjoys a pre-eminence in the San Francisco Bay Area as its oldest retail establishment and the only jeweler to survive the 1906 earthquake. A family-owned company, Shreve & Co. currently has locations off Union Square in San Francisco, in the Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto and downtown Portland, OR.
