Good stuff, right here. I’m not really a breakfast person but wanted to eat something hearty for before leaving for the airport and subsequently not eating until dinner. I had the ham, egg, and cheese on a jalapeño bagel and it did not disappoint. As previous Unilocalers said, the eggs were good(no rubbery eggs here) and the bagel itself was perfect — crispy/crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Great jalapeño flavor to accommodate my Texan taste buds. It took a little while to get our order(7 – 10 minutes) but we weren’t in a hurry. Drink it down with a latte from Olé Latte and you’ve got one hell of a breakfast and energy kick.

Authentic New York-style bagel? Check. All the chewy goodness with the characteristic crunch that you expect from a good boiled bagel. Tasty Nova Lox? Check. A plentiful, tasty pile of fishy goodness graces your delicious bagel along with creamy cream cheese and your choice of extras, including capers and red onion, which I consider essential for the perfect cream cheese and lox. Fast, friendly service at a conveniently-located corner trailer? Check and check. Only downside? These are messy to eat, so be careful lest your capers escape and lox swim away! I tend to eat these at home open face to avoid these problems, but this is all to be forgiven. A compact, delicious sandwich arrives in your hungry hands, and you eat it any way you can.

I parked in a further lot than usual this week and encountered the Spielman cart on my walk to the office. Tiny and unassuming, the coffee is delicious(not sure whose beans they’re brewing), and the bagels/shmear are fresh and tasty. Today I grabbed bagel/egg/cheddar breakfast sandwich which exceeded expectations: nicely buttered, eggs were great(not rubbery) and the cheese had real flavor. Staff is chill and friendly. Perfect for what it is!

Looking for just a good old bagel place may land you at Spielman Bagel Cart. It is located across the main lot of food carts on Alder. They mostly just do bagels and beverages, though all kinds of things can be put on the bagels. A man makes them and then sells them through a small window near the Delicios cart. I walked up having barely seen this cart before. It was around breakfast time, so my mind obliged with my stomach’s demands. The proprieter quickly spread cream cheese on two bagels and sold them face inwards towards eachother for three dollars total. I was able to easily eat them while walking around. They were certainly of high quality. The balence between chewy and crunchy was fairly stable unlike at the supermarket. I have had a bit better donuts at a smaller price, but the value here was fairly good. Spielman is just right for your bagel needs.

It looks like Spielman has jumped on the food cart trend in Portland(at least considering how untouched this Unilocal page is). Even with the confined corners our bagel guy was in, we still received a delicious NY-style bagel with a decent variety of spreads and toppings. The bagels are more on the savory side, and dense. Also, they take cash or credit!
