Just finished up eating at this place. Lasted no more than 2 minutes. After ordering food with a rude, condescending cashier we waited for our food with anticipation! Boy did the reviews let us down. The food came out cold. The rice, undercooked, lacked any flavor. As if salt and garlic were banned from use. The beans tasted straight from a can from Walmart. The main meat, beef brisket, came out luke warm with cheese topped and still cold. Combination of these two items made for a mushy cold brisket. Randomly paired with it were diced beets, a wannabe Mexican tortilla, and salad. Do not fall prey to the overrated reviews as this place does not meet the basics of good authentic Mexican food. I’ve had better beans and rice from Taco Bell or some random Mexican restaurant in a hill billy town in the middle of no where. True disappointment!

Teote never disappoints. We came here the first time a couple of years ago and will continue to eat here whenever we get the chance. Haven’t had everything on the menu, but everything I’ve had has been excellent. It’s not fancy, it’s not expensive but it is healthy, hearty and full of complex flavors and textures. A wonderful experience!

I went here for lunch on my vacation from california, this place has an awesome amazing staff. I loved the food and so did my picky son! The next night my man and i invited 12 of our friends to meet up in the backyard area Teote has. It was perfect! None of us had to split a bill, there was plenty of seating and seriously was the best food and drink in a long time. Thank you Teote! And thank you for your seriously delicious recipes, my food was SO good

Stumbled upon this place because we got sick of eating bar food when watching college football down the road. The food here is SOOOO good! Patio and drinks are awesome. I like to come here with a group of people and order the family style meal. You get a bit of everything. Plantaines and beets are not to be missed! The El Diablo and Mole are my meat favorites. I’ve never eaten food like this until Teote opened and now I’m there on the regular. I’m only giving 4 stars because they got rid of the mango habenero drinks that I enjoyed oh so much with vodka. BRINGTHEMBACK!!!

Arepas: basically they’re South American corn buns with stewed meat and slaws. And the ones at Teote are stupid good. Their meat is incredibly flavorful and cooked to perfection. The slaws they serve give the meal a nice, acidic, fresh bite and the agua frescas are thick and fresh. I wasn’t a huge fan of the beans and rice, but the salad and dressing were good. Do yourself a favor and stop by Teote. The service is fast, the ambiance is killer, and the fried masa frites are worth the trip. Can’t wait to go back.

Most amazing Arapas plate! It was packed with color and flavor! Being a vegetarian this hit the spot. Debated between the bowl and plate and was amazed a how much fun came for the small price increase. I also enjoyed being able to see the variety of what I was eating. You could easily spilt the vegetarian Arapas plate. There was a fun outdoor roof seating area also.

I was just now Unilocaling for a place to get a bite, saw the reviews for this place were so good. Then I recalled that I went there a cpl months ago! The service was awful and the food was very bland. I had a plate with multiple items on it and not a single one was what I would call«good.» I found it to be a huge disappointment. The epitome of «over-rated.»

I must thank the S.O.‘s friend and his wife for taking us to this gem of a place. The back patio is probably the coolest place to eat. When you walk in, you order your food and beverages, you get a number, and you go find a seat. We opted for the patio seating which is gorgeous. Right in center is a fire pit with seating around it. On both sides are tables and more seats. At the very end is another bar and kitchen/prep area. We ordered this big dish that was made to feed a group of 4. It was a perfect way to sample everything. The lamb chop was delicious. The black beans were so good and the plantains was a nice palate cleanser without the usual sweetness that yellow bananas have. The server was totally cool. The atmosphere was great. The food was delicious. On top of that, we had some good laughs and conversations with some really awesome friends. You really can’t beat that.

We just so happened to stop in on Margarita Monday, so margaritas were $ 6! Score! And they were pretty darn good. What made it awesome to me was the chile salt on the rim of the class. I’m sure it was some sort of chipotle because it was smoky and complemented the sweetness of the margarita very well. I am a fan of this place. It’s fast casual but a place you can hang out for a while. The upstairs feels like a treehouse. LOVED the arepas and the flavors in them are insanely bold, zesty, and delicious. If that’s not enough, they have a couple of sauces you can grab to drizzle onto your food.

This place is surprisingly huge. You walk in to order and then realize there’s an outside, an upstairs– it’s like a jungle. You could probably lose someone here if you’re all plastered enough. Prices are reasonable and staff is friendly enough. There is some self serve here– you pour your own water and sauces, which I personally don’t mind. The place is really casual. I would probably come here with a group of friends to just lounge around forever. There’s a fireplace outside, lots of interesting deco, etc. I ordered the teote bowl and I got to say it was alright– nothing amazing, nothing mindblowing. I think people drink a lot and forget how the food tastes that they hype this place up. I also remember we waited about 30 minutes for one bowl… and it didn’t seem too crowded to me. So the wait combined with okay food gives it three stars for me. Would recommend coming here for drinks rather than for food.

Usually I don’t give out 1 star rating lightly but sorry this whole dining experience was just horrible. We went on Sunday night, weather was perfect in Portland this weekend. We decided to try this place because 2 week prior, I happened to be in this area and saw a line of people trying to get in. I was excited to try it. First impression was the price seemed to be reasonable and staffs were friendly. We processed to order the food and drinks. We went upstairs and it was nice, outside patio was a little bit cold for me, so we sat inside. Love the decors. It’s typical self-serving style restaurants in Portland. We got our own silverware, waters, and napkins. Food came then everything just went down the toilet. Food itself looked appetizing enough but once we bites into it. It’s just flavorless and tasteless. I would rather go to Waffle House or IHOP, I might get better food at least they put salt into the food. My pork chop was overcooked, it was so tough I couldn’t even finish it. The portion of brisket on my husband plate was so tiny, we were NOT even sure that’s meat at all. I did get lot of beans, rice and plantains. Another problem was tipping, we don’t mind tip the wait staffs but again it’s self-serving. Only thing they did was bringing the food to us. So I would say 15% is pretty decent but on register there was only 18% as the lowest option then jumped to 20 and 25%. If the food was good, we might feel worthy but food was horrific, therefore I vow I would never return nor recommend to anyone. Please stay away, Portland has so many good food joints expect this one.

Great vibes!!! The place is casual, hip, and cozy upstairs with the fireplace! The service was good and the food was fantastic! We were a party of 5 and tried the following with quite a bit leftover, haha! Starters: 1. Arepitas(full order): smaller arepas with jalapeño and cheddar cheese, topped with a habanero like crema. These are a must try! They are super crunchy on the outside, corn filled moist masa flavor on the inside with just the right amount of spice. Arepas: 1. El Diablo: Shredded pork belly and roasted poblano chiles glazed and a red chili maple sauce topped with pickled onions, Verde sauce, Queso fresco, and cilantro. This was tasty but lacked a wow factor. 2. Reina Pepiada: Shredded chicken breast mixed with avocado and mayo, topped with mixed greens, crema, lemon, Queso fresco and cilantro. This essentially tasted like a refreshing chicken salad, super tasty!!! 3. Mole: Shredded brisket slow cooked Mole sauce, topped with pickled onions, crema, Queso fresco, and cilantro. This was yummy and had a velvety texture although a tad on the sweet side. 4. Chorizo & Plantain: Simple but omg so yummy!!! You get the sweet, salty, spicy, creamy, crunchy, textures all on one bite! This was our favorite Arepa flavor!!! Mas Comida: We got the lamb plate and pork plate which came with the protein, black beans, rice, pickled beets, and plantains. Both meat were well seasoned but our pork was a tad over cooked. We also tried two of the Agua Frescas but it wasn’t anything we’d order again. Overall, great atmosphere, great meal, plenty of street parking nearby and it’s an awesome chill spot to have a great dinner with family and friends!

I do not understand the under whelming reviews of this place… Most likely just self righteous dorks that believe being Unilocal«elite» is like being a New York Times food critic. This place rules! The dining room and patio are absolutely beautiful. As I walked into the patio I straight up felt like I was on a movie set, it is obvious that a lot of hard work went into making this place a real life oasis. My food was delicious! I went during happy hour, it wasn’t very busy, just a few people enjoying the heat on a Tuesday afternoon… My food came out in less than 5 minutes, probably because I ordered a salad, I’d guess that something more elaborate would take a little longer, but who cares when you’re waiting for your food in a real life oasis??? Service was perfect. Bottom line, drink a margarita here, get some food, and relax. This place is the absolute best. *disclaimer* as I write this I am slightly buzzed…

Fun spot to meet up with friends or family. Order at the counter and find a seat indoors or under their covered deck. My group ordered one arepa and one alcoholic beverage each. My chicken arepa dish was perfectly cooked and tasted very healthy and a had a slight hint of spice. The two arepas in my dish were thick corn cookie-type tortillas, for those unfamiliar. I ordered the margarita, and although it was pricey for the amount of liquid in my cup, I enjoyed it. I would probably come back here again, as there are few good restaurants like this that offer so many gluten free options. All of the arepas are gluten free.

I had high hopes for the food here considering how many people were here and the reviews I had read, but man was this a total let down or what. The staff were not very welcoming and seemed to ignore us for quite a while before taking our order, even though were were standing at the counter waiting. Teote Salad– WAY overpriced for what you get. I would have gotten a better salad at whole foods or somewhere else. It was very underwhelming for a small plate of lettuce Fried Plantains– I love fried plantains, but these were so mushy. The sauce that was on them was quite tasty and added a little kick. They needed to be way crispier Smoky Pollo Arepa– This dish was ABSOLUTELYTERRIBLE!!! On first glance it looked beautiful and flavorful. Once it was in my mouth, everything went horribly awry. Whatever it was seasoned with or garnished with made the whole thing taste like rubber shoes. I couldn’t even eat it. Pabellon Arepa– Again, this was beautiful and had the potential to be amazing, but it was way to salty. I could only eat a small portion of it before wanting to drink a gallon of water. I don’t know if I would come back here or if I could recommend this place. maybe for some drinks and a single buttered arepa. The atmosphere is great and there was lots of seating.

I wish I was hip enough to know my way around Latin American cuisine. Sadly, I’m not. So, I can’t speak to the authenticity of the food. However, the quality is solid! I usually order one(or more) of the Sampler plates to share around. And, I gotta say, their boozy concoctions are delish! They are a refreshing departure from my normal go-to. Check out the chalk board and treat yourself. I can’t imagine you’ll be disappointed. What ties Teote together is the friendly, festive vibe and one of the better patio/outside dining areas in Portland.

Pretty good for arepas. Huge portions and was tasty enough. We got the masa fritas which is a great appetizer to share. I think these were plantain strips but can’t remember and would recommend. Got the pork belly arepa, mole beef brisket, and pabellon. All had a little bit of a smokey flavor which I liked but the arepa shell was a little too thick for me as arepas go. I think I ended up just eating the meat… And there was a lot of it! Make sure after you order to walk upstairs. The space and ambience upstairs is way cozier.

If you know me, you’ll know I love a place that does a few things REALLY well! This is that place. The menu isn’t overwhelming and veg or carnivore alike can get some pretty great fix’ns. I will say though that their meats are to die for! I generally get one of the more popular bowls with their pulled pork. Oh my, is it delectable or what?! There’s a balance of flavors to make it complex yet simply the perfect experience. Things are layered and part of the pleasure is just working your way through the flavorscape. Go, the line moves fast, there’s lots of quirky seating and spots to nestle in and during summer months it’s a really great to-go meal to eat on Mt. Tabor.

The original plan had been to go to Pok Pok, but as some may know, they are under construction and currently closed. I wish I knew that! I had my hopes up for Pok Pok, but then… then our local PDX friends suggested this place. So a short drive later we were at Teote. This is a spot I would never go to on my own, but I am so glad our friends brought us here! The flood blew my mind! We ordered: — Masa Nosh(Garlic masas fritas topped with verde sauce, plantain sauce, black beans, cheddar cheese, smoked gouda, crema and fresh cilantro) it’s comparable to ordering nachos, or Irish Nachos, where the masas fritas, which tasted look a root plant of some sort, is topped with a bunch of goodies! So delicious! — El Diablo Arepas(Shredded Pork belly and roasted poblano chiles glazed in a red chili maple sauce, topped with pickled onions, verde sauce, queso fresco and cilantro) OMG, writing this makes me want a bowl of this right now, and for $ 7/bowl, I wouldn’t mind ordering an extra to go lol. Almost BBQ’y, I dunno what else to compare it to. Like a sweet glaze like BBQ. The meat was delicious! Everyone in the group got different bowls, I dunno what kind they all got though, but everyone loved all the food! Please go try this place, it’s not a typical spot I would go to, but you’re mind will be blown.

What a cool place to try authentic Venezuelan food for the first time! Our party of 2 arrived around 7:30 on a Friday night, so we definitely expected it to be packed. The way the restaurant is set up is you stand in line, order at the counter where you get a number, & then find a spot. When we got there, the line was out the door, so we had plenty of time(30 min or so) to go through the limitless options of what dish/meat combo we wanted. My boyfriend ordered the Smokey Pollo Teote plate, which was a generous portion of rice, beans, 1 buttered arepa, fried plantains the Smokey Pollo green verde chicken. The chicken was amazing — so flavorful and moist and it definitely lived up to its«smokey» title. I wasn’t hungry enough to get a plate, so I only ordered the Diablo arepa dish. This was a small bowl with a good amount of the Diablo pork belly, and a sliced arepa on top. The pork belly was delicious, but a little heavy for my liking. I was fascinated by how perfect the arepas were! Crispy on the outside and moist on the inside without being too dense. My boyfriend is not a fan of plantains, so I also got to eat his and boy they were everything I imagined they would be! Overall, a delicious dinner. The –1 star was mainly for the setup– ordering and then having to walk around the upstairs to find a spot wasn’t hard for us, but for larger parties I could see that being an issue when it’s busy. Also, if you order drinks at the downstairs bar, you have to pick it up at one of the upstairs bar. I had ordered a cider, waited in line for about 5 min at the inside upstairs bar, just to be told I needed to go to the outside bar, that that’s where they pour all beer on tap. No biggie, but it would be nice if both bars could accomodate beer and liquor orders. I definitely want to return with a bigger appetite so I can try a teote plate of my own with a different meat option!

If you’ve never had an arepa, you’re missing out. These delicious bread pockets are made of maize dough, and have a unique flavour that you probably won’t find in any of your more commonly eaten starches. Fortunately, you are now aware that Teote exists and has pretty fabulous arepas that you can heap with the meat of your choice. Now is the point when you stop reading this review and head over to Teote to stuff your face with one of these arepas. Okay, you’re still reading? Fine, I’ll tell you more. There’s a bunch of seating: indoors, outdoors, upstairs, downstairs. There’s a giant, roaring fire pit outdoors, which would definitely be my choice of seating if the weather permits. As far as food goes, I actually got the Teote Bowl because I wasn’t all that hungry. I sprung for the smoky pollo as my meat choice, and I was in no way disappointed by the smoky, juicy deliciousness it was. Combine that with black beans, fried plantains, and a host of sauces, and you can see why I gobbled the whole bowl up in record time. Yep, this place is lip-smacking, bowl-licking delicious.

I was really hankering for some some arepas, popped onto Unilocal and found Teote. Got there right when they opened, ordered the«El Diablo» for me, wife got the Mole. We went upstairs and had the place to ourselves. Food came out relatively quickly and it looked delicious. Given that it’s called«El Diablo»(The Devil), I assumed I’d be biting into something that would make my eyes water with spicy goodness. Took the first bite, went over to the salsa/sauce area, grabbed the Habanero sauce and applied liberally. They should change the name of this dish to «Picante Para Gringos». Even with the sauce, it was just OK. Pork belly was chewy/tough and the arepas were overly fried. My wife’s mole sauce was very gritty and unappealing. My hunt for good arepas in Portland continues.

This place was very yummy! The guy at the register was very friendly and funny, and patient. I had the vegan bowl, some arepas and guacamole, and a margarita. It was too much! The vegan bowl would have been more than enough. Something in it unfortunately upset my stomach a lot, but I have stomach troubles. wasn’t Teote’s fault… but boy was it upset. I initially had their house margarita and tried my boyfriend’s Mezcal Margarita and it tasted good, so ordered that for my 2nd one. THe first one we got at the register, but when it was made upstairs it was totally different. I couldn’t drink it. My boyfriend thought the lady upstairs hadn’t put enough sour in it. I liked the upstairs though, as did most people I think! :) Service was friendly, and all of the menu looked great! I’d highly recommend this place. Reasonably priced and great options for all. I’ll go back! :)

I never considered myself old, until my Wife and I walked through the front door. It was like walking into a John Hughes movie set. Every one half my age. So anyway, we grabbed a menu and shuffled along in line toward the counter. I ordered the Mole bowl, and she the brisket bowl.(It was supposed to smaller than my bowl, but wasn’t). Weird. Then I ordered two Mezcal Margaritas. We sat and sipped our drinks. And I’ll tell you… I believe the babies across the room enjoyed sucking on their mamas more than my Wife and I had suckin’ down these cocktails. The Margaritas needed more mix like«Darcelle» needs more lipstick ! Cmon! I spent $ 12 for each drink !! Is this a juice bar? It’s a place for Millenials to hang, That’s it. Not worth paying $ 47. Not sure if they serve alcohol

We orderd the«family style» meal for 4 so we could try everything and it was TINY. Way too small of servings(especially the meat) for 4 people. We had to order again — two of the main meat dishes individually and they were a little more reasonable size wise but you’re definitely mostly getting beans and rice for $ 14.00 Also, the drinks were light on alcohol and the mixes were very syrupy and heavy, not a pleasant drink(I had the margarita). All in all, there are much better places to eat for a better value, the food was flavorful but not plentiful for the price. Waiters were kind of rude too and we had tipped 20% in advance — they wouldn’t even bring a refill on water. .. pointed us to the water cooler in corner instead :{

Not sure I’m as excited as most folks about this place. Being Latina and also a good cook, perhaps I should have ordered something else. Stay away from the«Smoky Chicken», it’s just not good. It tastes smokey and that’s it no flavor what’s so ever and it way overpowered everything on the dish! I had to ask for more cabbage as it was quite harsh in the smokey department and I didn’t quite find much flavors. They get get 5 stars on exterior but then lose some points(if you eat downstairs), it was freezing. –1 They get 5 stars on service but quite frankly, don’t tip(unless like me you feel you want to 20%, reason being you have to get your own silverware and bus your own table!?) WTH!!! –1 Also I found as a visitor to Portland, it would be a major bonus if this spot would would offer more vegan(only one vegetarian option on menu), and gluten-free choices. Still worth another trip and perhaps I can give them back the two stars they’re missing from me I’d suggest go upstairs instead and order a bowl.

Came in for lunch about 1:30. Never been here before, but the gluten free menu was intriguing. Be aware parking can be tough. Me…Teoto plate with the el Diablo protein. Pork belly, roasted poblano chiles. Wife… Pabellon bowl. Beef brisket and sweet peppers. Let me say… Yummm Both proteins were super flavorful. Fried plantains were tasty though not as crisp as I like. No complaints. My only critique is that the sauce on the pork is so flavorful you do lose some of the pork belly taste. Nice ambiance upstairs and a killer patio. Will be back

Love, love, love this place. Went and had lunch and drinks with my partner and best friend last week and had the best time. The staff is stellar with personality and service. The food is amazing, we had the pernil and the chicken salad and what can beat whiskey ciders and Tecate Tuesday by a beautiful fire. The patio is year round friendly and feels like you’re hanging out in beautiful bohemian tree house. We can’t wait to go again.

This place is the bomb. Came here on a weekday for a late lunch with my Portland friend; she had been several times and said we had to go to this place. We got two kinds of arepas. I got the mole arepa and seriously the whole bowl was just full of mole pork. #ALLTHEPROTEIN I was in heaven. We also split some plantains. Which were only ok. I’d come back here FORSURE. Great vibe, great service, good location, nice people making the food. Also, they have this cool eco heater in the bathroom which I found intriguing. And for a non-winter Portland day, they have a sweet back patio which would be a great late night hang out. Minus one star because of the serious headache I got after, unauthentic arepas, and my underwhelming plantains. The headache, however, could either be from my gluten-free issues or something else entirely. Lastly, they have very good hot sauces. Be ready for spicy ;)

I found this place via a Unilocal search with my filter being focused on the rating because I wanted to try one of the best rated places in Portland before I left. Teote is a cute two story restaurant where you order your food at the register, get a number, pick up your drinks in the backyard, sit down and wait for deliciousness. I tried the teote bowl with mole style braised beef. The beef was SPICY! It was a good spice but I couldn’t finish all of it. The bowl came with a side of salad, black beans, white rice, two slices of plantains, and arepa bread. Everything was good! I even tried their hot sauce to make things hotter and I appreciated that they had home made salsa(green and orange-habanero). Make sure to bus your own table. If there is space go sit by the fire pit outside. Glad i got to come here!

I usually get the Amas bowl with chorizo and it is fantastic! Opted for the Teote plate with chorizo on my most recent visit and it was so good! The flavors are like a happy dance on the tongue and the atmosphere is great! There is just the right amount of slight kick in the spices used to give you a hint of heat – and self serve sauces that pack a bigger kick for those craving more. What I am trying to say is: if you enjoy delicious, flavorful food, you need to try Teote.

I have never had anything like the meal I had at Teote. I got the platter with the pork(not the el diablo) and was blown away by the quality of the food. We started with the masa frites which hit the spot. If I didn’t know it was corn I would have thought they were French fries. Delicious and crispy. I only would have liked more salsa verde. The platter was amazing and more than enough food. The plantains were interesting, not my favorite but good nonetheless. I want to go here again but I’m sad that I don’t lie in Portland. Oh, and the arepas are done really well. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.

The missus and I had an odd, mostly negative experience. We each ordered an arepa dish on a cold night, and hers turned out to be served cold. There was nothing about this on the menu, and in the past, we’ve always received them served hot/warm. We also had a dessert which was only really half-edible: sort of chocolate arepa-cookies in a sweet sauce. But it tasted very burnt, and was extremely tough. We couldn’t really cut them into smaller pieces with the avaiable butter knives. So her dinner was pretty much ruined. But the funkiest(in a bad way) part was the service: this is a real DIY eating experience: you grab a menu on the way in, wait in line, place your order and take a number. Someone brings you the food, but no one comes by to check on the food. They drop off the food without any napkins or silverware, so you need to get up and get them yourself from the bus station. Finally, it seems you’re expected to clean up after yourself as well. Now, a standard tip for a –full service– restaurant would be 15−20%. For a buffet-style place where the service still takes your order and refills drinks, more like 10%. And for a place like this? Where the only service they provide(dropping off the food) actually –creates– work for you? 5% maybe. So I was honestly offended and pretty amazed that the checkout included preset tip percentages –starting– at 18%. And the choices go up from there: 20%, 25%, 30%. You have to navigate a special Custom Tip set of dialogs to leave an appropriate tip. Really a put-off. And I’m a person who –likes– tipping well. But I also like tipping fairly.

Great place for plaintains and arepas. If I could, I’d eat just a plate of arepas and guac. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is fun. There is upstairs and downstairs, but the upstairs patio is my favorite. There’s a cover, a fire pit, a private room, and a bar. It’s fun for a group of friends or even a party. Drinks look delicious as well. All in all, the place is enjoyable.

Teote! Came here for lunch with some coworkers. You have to go upstairs & eat outside on the covered back patio. They have a centrally located gas fireplace & full bar. It is completely covered & heated when cold. The ambiance of this place is 5 star in & of itself. Now add the wonderful tastes of the Central American style foods & house-made sauces«it’s off the hook!!!» I will definitely be coming back here!

Amazing spot that is definitely worth checking out! I came here for lunch with my team of 11 and was really impressed with the service and food quality. There’s a plethora of items ranging from $ 6-$ 9. I ordered the El Diablo which is pork belly and roasted poblano chiles glazed in a red chili maple sauce(highly recommend) but there were easily 5 other items that looked appealing that I plan to order on my next visits. I won’t forget to mention the awesome space. There’s plenty of indoor seating but they have this great covered outdoor area upstairs that includes a fire place which is where I can imagine going to on warm summer evenings or enjoying on a rainy afternoon for happy hour.

Loved the atmosphere here! Seating is plentiful and varied — bar seats, outdoor tables & fireside, downstairs, upstairs — you get the point. I’ve only had one other experience with arepas and it was at a popular restaurant in NYC. I was rather let down by it and thought maybe I didn’t really like arepas but I wanted to give Teote a shot. I was pleasantly surprised by the arepas. Warm, soft, moist, what’s not to like? Except that I felt Teote was a bit stingy with them. Only 1 arepa per person for La Cena? Come on. after the first one, I wanted like 3 more! I recommend the El Diablo(pork belly) but the Smoky Pollo wasn’t bad either!
