The Herb Shoppe

I’ve seen several herbs available here that contain cumulative toxins or are dangerous for pregnant or breastfeeding folks that are not labeled accordingly. I would caution anyone who shops here to read the Wikipedia article on anything they are thinking of trying instead of merely believing what the labels on the jars say. The people behind the counter on three separate occasions have had no idea what herb or tincture I was asking for when I inquired about some very standard items in a home herbal kit. The people working the register are not equipped to warn or inform you. I recognize this is advice that is pretty obvious, but I have in the past been to many herb shops where the person behind the counter at any given time was more knowledgeable, and the labels on toxins were clear, and I have not felt compelled to write a review. The third time in when yet another two people working had never heard of propolis and and I saw horse chestnut for sale, I figured a cautionary review was in order.

Went in to try and locate some Ceylon Cinnamon, the person working didn’t know off-​hand what type their cinnamon was, so she looked up the vendor info, and when she saw that it wasn’t Ceylon, she referred me to another store that did have it. Really nice, helpful customer service is kind of hard to come by in this town, so I’ll definitely be back!

This is a lovely little shop with all manner of herbs and plants. Staff is friendly and helpful.

I discovered this shop while walking to Blu Star donuts. the minute you walk in the smell of the oils are amazing. It transports me back to my school days in India. My mom used to take me to markets where they sell oils and raw materials to make incense sticks and soaps. The smell coming from Herb Shoppe was similar to those markets and I found that very nostalgic. We bought some eucalyptus oil and some incense sticks there. They also had kombucha on tap which tasted good. We were in a hurry and didn’t spend much time in the shop but next time I will stop by to check out the spices they sell.

I’m very into essential oils and on a recent visit to Portland I happened upon the Herb Shoppe, and deemed it heaven on earth! I bought a ton of empty bottles for making my own mixes, those are hard to find retail, I’m always having to order online. They have a ton of herbs and oils, and the gals working there were super nice.
Portland is def my vibe. Essential oils on one corner, kombucha on tap on the next, and a Paleo food truck, now if only Seattle would be so hip.

They just have a wall of herbs, which doesn’t seem like much, but on the times that I’ve been in looking for something specific it’s been there.
Typically I walk in feeling like a witch doctor needing components like newt ear and knees of penguin, and the staff assures me that comfrey and mugwort are very common herbs that people require. They point out the jar on the shelf without even reading the labels. I guess my needs are only exotic to the stock boy at Winco who doesn’t know the difference between green and black tea.
I asked if I can brew the mugwort in tea, my intended purpose and she’s like, «uh… yeah…» Sry! I’ve gotten some great product from an online source, then gone back for the exact same stuff and they sent me something that was same texture and consistency, slight variation in color, but tasted like rancid licorice. Had to make sure. Tastes great. Had it in the cupboard for about 6 months now and only thinking to write a review because I just emptied the jar and need more!

I hate that how they have what I need because it’s always such a terrible experience. Lacking any sort of customer service.
I’ve never had a hello or welcome. A simple greeting and eye contact goes so far. If your helping a customer and others are waiting simply thank them and let them know you’ll be with them when you can. Ignoring customers is just rude. It’s not difficult, costs nothing and shows that you appreciate my business.

I have taken classes and liked this place but today when I went in for some tincture i was cheated. I asked for 4 oz, which goes for $ 42. I watched as the supply bottle ran out and the 4oz mark was not met. I asked the girl directly if it was 4 oz & she said yes. I came home and turns out it’s 3.6 oz. I abhor being lied to.

My favorite place to buy herbs in town! Not only are the vibes good and the staff friendly and knowledgeable, but they seriously house A TON of herbs. We are so lucky to have a local shop for immediate herbal remedy needs. Also, I have received quite a bit of acupuncture from Sarah Chase with incredible results. Not only are her treatments fun and relaxing, she does an incredible job educating you along the way. I have learned so much from her!

Yes. This is an herb shop! How I miss being able to drop into one when I need to.
Smells fantastic. Prices are average. Choice is very good, although they don’t have everything (does anyone have everything?) *smile*. I was looking for several things which they actually did not carry.
Was able to find moderately priced organic beeswax.
And don’t leave before you buy a ginseng chew. Like taffy, only tastier and healthy.
I will most definitely return with a shopping list next time I’m in town, if I don’t buy from them online. As that is an option. And having been there and seeing and smelling their wares first hand, I would be comfortable doing so.

Really cold and unfriendly staff! They also seemed confused when asked about herbs that they sell! There are so many other herb shops in Portland with great customer service and better selection and same price. I will NOT be returning there again!

The store is well organized and decorated nicely. The sales associate was helpful and friendly. I am told they had a good selection. This place loses stars because of the overwhelming, and kind of funky, smell. Instantly aggravated my headache. I am not a fan of these stores.

I see Sarah Chase here for massage and acupuncture. She is very knowledgeable and reasonably priced. It’s nice to have a body worker you can count on. If you go here for teas and tonics, give her a shot. She is the cat’s meow.

Although I have multiple locations where I purchase my herbs, this is by far my favorite in all of the Portland Metro Area :)
The reason I have multiple places is because not every herb is obtained by the same source. And, if it happens to be that they are out of stock (or just don’t carry a certain one) of any one particular herb, I can usually find it else where. *HOWEVER, I think because herbs ARE SEASONAL, there are times when they are just flat out not available maybe because the demand is so high!* (That was my response to some of the earlier reviews ;) … sorry, just my 2 cents worth.)
JJ and her staff are VERY helpful, and if the one who is working the counter doesn’t know the answer to a question they are quick to finding out the answer. I have left requests to be phoned when a product/​herb has been restocked, so I call that customer service! It’s a cute shop filled to the brim with ‘hand-​crafted’ items and premixed concoctions! It is also where I had my first session of Reiki! It’s awesome that they hold special ‘events’ there at the shop, or else I wouldn’t have experienced it that day I was picking up a special order! :)
I highly recommend this herb shop to all of those who are looking for containers to create their own blends of lotions, notions and potions, as well. They usually have a nice selection and is kept well stocked.

Can’t find the herbs or the specific blends that you’re looking for than this is the place. The customer service is hit or miss, however, the blends, quality and quantity are awesome. Prices for what they are are decent. I got lots of natural based blends as perfumes as I am allergic to the synthetic stuff.

You can find herbs here you can’t find anywhere else bit the Internet. Knowledgable staff. Not the best costumer service, but what’dya expect?
I went in looking for an herb to help with some pain I was having. She whipped me up what is called a Tonic for $ 24. It seems to work well. I was skeptical of this at first, but now I go here for almost all of my natural medicine needs.

Their chest cold/​cough tincture has literally cured my annual bronchitis before. (Where antibiotics had failed.) That’s some ridiculous, bad tasting, hippie juice — but I’ll take it. Now we’re hooked on herbs and pushing them like drug dealers to all our friends. «Oh, you have a flu? There’s a tincture for that.» This place should be next up as a Portlandia skit.
Definitely a staple, and remember that the helpful people there are usually not qualified to prescribe anything as they’re in training. So don’t think of them as a doctor/​herbalist substitute. But they are very helpful and can answer most questions, and reading the descriptions/​doing internet research can get you pretty far.

For the aspiring herbalist and tea fanatic this is really a wonderful place. I come here every couple of months to restock on my teas. The sales lady always knows what the herbs are good for. I’ve been drinking chicory and dandelion root to try and cut back on my coffee addiction and to live a little better. I mixed an ounce of each together and it has a rooty, earthy taste that is pretty lovely on frozen mornings. Some of their mixed herbs are so strong (like Yogi Chai) and I made the mistake of steeping too much for too long. I think my favorite is Sleep-​Aid tea and Gospel Choir tea. Sleep-​Aid seems to have a lot of manzanilla and rose hips, Gospel Choir is heavy on the licorice.
It’s such a specialty store, please stay open for ever! I’ll always come to you guys for my loose-​leaf.

They have a nice selection of herbs, but what I really like is the array of elixers for varying ailments, etc. Pricing is reasonable and friendly staff.
