Voodoo Doughnut

WAY OVERHYPED. One of my best friend’s roommate just moved here and was dying to go so I decided to tag along. I have lived in Portland my entire life and never understood what the big deal about this place was. There was a long line, as expected, but moved fairly quickly (~10 mins or so). We didn’t notice that they only accept cash until we got closer to the front and the menu is pretty difficult to read. There are no descriptions of the doughnuts but instead just their quirky names and we ended up having to point to which ones we wanted in the spinning case. The doughnuts were too sweet for my liking and the toppings (Oreo and captain crunch) tasted quite stale. I’ll give points for the interesting flavors that they created. But overall, I am not a fan and there are definitely better doughnut shops in the area, like blue star or pip’s.

First time in Portland and had heard the hype about this place. Afterwards, I can’t see what the craze is all about.
It’s located in what seemed like a pretty seedy neighborhood. There were homeless people at almost every corner and questionable folk walking around. It’s right next to the «Keep Portland Weird» sign, a photo op location so that was a plus. We got there late afternoon on a weekday and the line wasn’t that long — maybe a 10 minute wait, so that was also a plus.
The actual donuts themselves didn’t taste that good. Didn’t taste fresh, and the one I had was pretty dry (oreos and peanut butter drizzle). The price was decent but it’s cash only.
I guess I’d recommend coming here for the intrigue and Portland factor, but don’t expect amazing tasting donuts.

A trip to Portland wouldn’t have been complete without stopping here, even if it meant lining up outside in the cold /​partial rain for the best part of an hour. Hey. don’t judge, Voodoo has been Unilocal bookmarked for the best part of 3 years and I had just Ran 15 miles before Breakfast, I feel I earned them, right?
The line outside although seems daunting yet moved at a reasonable pace where once inside was also about 20 people deep, at least it was warm and dry. The menu is huge and it’s easy to get carried away or overwhelmed in here so my advice is to look at the menu while your in line and know exactly what you want and once inside don’t let the epic display of Doughnut food porn sway you from your already made decision.
With that said when it came to ordering I found that 2 of the 3 Doughnuts I wanted were not available so I quickly had to make a decision and went with the Rappers Delight which included the ODB which was my number 1 choice (Chocolate Frosting, Oreo crumbles and Peanut Butter) Heck yes! Anything with Cookies and Peanut Butter automatically gets my approval.
Having the Doughnuts later that day I was in pure heaven, the ODB I could have easily eaten 2 or even 3 of. These are real DOUGHNuts, you know. soft and squishy, not like these dry, dense ”Cake” things that way too many places produce and overcharge for. I didn’t eat all of them by myself though, I shared the Marshall Mathers and Maple Blazer Blunt with my Husband (who at the time of visiting the place told me he didn’t want any. I knew otherwise though) The MM was enjoyable too with mini M&M’s on top but the Blunt… eh, not so much. It was like a sugar overload so when (yes, when!) I return I shall skip that one.

Voodoo donuts. I applaud Voodoo donuts for being the first «Instagram-​pretty» donut place. But like other donut places which are all looks, they have zero taste & flavor.
I was extremely disappointed in my experience here. I had the maple bacon, captian crunch, and oreo donut. They all tasted OK. The maple bacon was OK but the remaining 2 were awful; I took a few bites and didn’t even eat the rest. The base of the glazed donut was really lacking in flavor. In addition, I tried eating the donuts the next day and they tasted awful. I’ve had donuts in California and they taste good for a few days; I know that’s not something to brag about but it’s something to consider.
Maybe I’m spoiled but California donuts near my house were 10x better.
PROS:
–Beautiful presentation. Instagram worthy pictures.
CONS:
–Prices are actually decent; most donuts run $ 1.50-$ 2 each. I was expecting «California Instagram» donuts at $ 3 each.
–Donuts taste pretty bad. They also don’t survive the «test of time» and taste disgusting the next day.
–Menu is confusing and not detailed at all. They list the donut name (which is usually something cool/​witty) but they don’t tell you what it is /​what’s inside it.
–Expect long wait times.
–Lots of homeless around the area.
TIPS:
–Cash only.

Super long lines for perfectly average grocery style donuts that have been topped and sprinkled by overly sweet cereal toppings. Super colorful sugar bombs make them #foodporn and #tourist trap hashtag worthy. One and done.

The original and iconic Voodoo doughnut! The place is interesting, creative and a must go to. Expect a long line, but if you can wait, you’ll find the most funky decorations on doughnuts and expressive art on the walls. It shows how Portland really is: funky, artistic and weird, still with a cool and creative vibe to it.
The doughnuts weren’t the best I’ve ever had, but they were still really tasty. So, if you think this is just a tourist trap, you’re wrong. They even serve vegan doughnuts!
We went to this place at around 11 am and it was really crowded. However when we were passing by in the afternoon the line was definetely shorter, so you might just have to guess the right time to go if you don’t want to wait for 30 minutes or so.
Overall, it really is the iconic place that defines this city, so you MUST visit!

Literally what I would consider THE institution of Portland, is Voodoo Doughnut!
The day before, we saw a couple walk into Case Study Coffee with a BUCKET of doughnuts from Voodoo. Seriously. I love a donut like the next person (okay, probably way more), but a dozen?! Dang it, do we have to try this place out?
I’m a donut whore, and I absolutely wanted to avoid Voodoo, but on the very last night on our trip to Portland, we ended up going. The line was long, but it wasn’t unbearable. Of course this place is hyped. Voodoo is hyped, and a few of our own donut shops here in San Diego are hyped up. What makes these places great, is that they all have their own unique take on donuts. Not only that, who doesn’t love a f’in donut?!
There’s no panic ordering here! You can get online and look at their menu way ahead of time and decide. We walked out of their with 4 donuts. Surprise surprise. We didn’t eat them until we got back to Sentinel. What I noticed was how super fluffy and great their dough is. I absolutely loved their standard glazed! On par with Randy’s in Los Angeles. Their Voodoo Doll donut was great and the jelly inside was amazing!
I’m pretty sold on Voodoo. I love Blue Star more as my donut shop of choice here in Portland, however Voodoo’s glamore, glitz, and «weirdness» really makes me want to come back again next time.
Just do it. Stand in line. Eat a donut or two or 12. Walk away with the experience and a smile on your face.

I have never been to either location where there wasn’t a huge line but the line moves quickly considering its size — prepare for a 20 minute wait before you get your donuts.
Donuts are a little over $ 3 but are huge in comparison to the ones you get at chains. And you’ll definitely feel guilty about eating these but as soon as you start eating one it will be hard to stop. Ladies, just plan on saving a third of your daily caloric intake for these and you should be fine, lol.
Shop itself was very kitsch-​y but I loved it. They also sell tshirts and shorts and other kinds of Voodoo merchandise if purchasing donuts isn’t enough. Would return!

A place that has seen the likes of Anthony Bourdain, place that is an icon of an area, so well known that your friends and coworkers talk about it as if it was a mythical creature — that place deserves a visit regardless of weather conditions and time of day. Or night.
And so it was. After an unfortunately botched, then saved dinner, we made the pilgrimage across 15ish city blocks to VooDoo donuts. And even at 11pm at night (yes, this place is open 24hrs), there was a line wrapping around the corner of the building. Cash only is not a problem when there are a) signs everywhere and b) an ATM right there, at the reach of one’s hand.
And then — the hard part. Deciding which donut to get. Wide variety of vegan options, too. I went for something random. First something kinky, which they were out of, and then just some random-​ass, delicious, masterfully crafted donut. And boy, did it taste great. A must-​go gourmet destination for all those visiting, traveling by or living in Portland.

Voodoo doughnuts are fun/​funny, decorative, caught up in marketing, and touristy trap. Depending on the doughnut you get it has less sweet frosting compared to Blue Star which I like. Favorite doughnut is Maple Bar.
I would say Blue Star is more foodie, has more nuanced/​complex frosting flavors, and dough is better. Their frosting can be overbearing or too sweet. Favorite doughnut is PBJ and definitely try Bluberry Bourbon Basil.
Between the two… I probably go for Maple Bacon because it’s less sweet and I like the big bacon slices on it.
BUT Sublime Doughnuts from Atlanta rules all. Good dough and good light balanced frosting.

The Iconic Voodoo Doughnut. Its a must see place if you’re ever in the Portland Area! Although it is known for their funky doughnuts, I think I was more a fan of the artwork/​the weird stuff on the wall. There is some vibe to it that I couldn’t pinpoint but I thought it looked cool. I think that is why I am giving this place 4-​stars…
Praise the lord that I was able to get there when the line wasn’t too long. I eventually decided on the Oreo Doughnut and it was spectacular. I devoured it in 2 seconds minimum. I could write about how savory it was, or how the sweetness of the doughnut was not too overpowering, but then I would be lying to you. I have no idea because I consumed that doughnut ridiculously fast. Sorry Unilocalers.
Although these are doughnuts, I think they get a lot of praise and recognition because they are creative, fluffy, and grade A. Then again, I’m not a doughnut expert. I just eat them.
Note to those who want to check this place out, they only take cash.

I thought this was going to be just another tourist trap, but the doughnuts here are actually pretty good! Apparently there’s usually a long line, but I guess we got lucky because there were only two groups in front of us when we arrived. They had a nice variety of doughnuts to choose from, and each was a pretty good size. The two that I got to try were the Grape Ape and No Name doughnuts. The Grape Ape is a raised yeast doughnut with vanilla frosting, grape dust, and lavender sprinkles. This doughnut was super soft and airy! The No Name doughnut is also a raised yeast doughnut but with chocolate frosting, rice krispies, and peanut butter. It was rich and chocolately with just the right amount of peanut better. I’d go back to try some of their other doughnuts!

Although it was a first timer for me in Portland, I was prepared and knew there would be a wait for these famous doughnuts! There was rain by the time my friends and I got in line but the wait time wasn’t bad at all as the line moved fairly quickly.
I loved their revolving glass cabinet to display the various donuts and their chalkboard full of interesting names for their donuts. I was also excited to get ahold of one of their famous pink boxes due to its design. I ordered the Portland Cream and Voodoo Doll doughnuts. The voodoo doll is ugly enough to be cute and it had blood (raspberry/​strawberry jam filling?) inside which I thought was a nice touch. The Portland Cream was delicious because it wasn’t too sweet for my tastes but I did get tired of it as I approached my last few bites.
Lover of donuts and a tourist? I say why the hell not and try it out! Good prices for big donuts and good service. Cash only!

A Tourist Trap! I heard about Voodoo Donuts from friends and decided to give it a go. I was a little overwhelmed by the plethora of donuts sitting on the rotating carousel. So many — cake, old-​fashioned, speciality, where do I begin?
We decided to try the chocolate cream donut, maple old-​fashioned, double chocolate cake, red blaming blunt, and blueberry cake donut. We should have just gotten one — the Blueberry donut. It was sweet and tasty. We just took a few bites of the other donuts — they weren’t worth the calories. The maple and double chocolate cake were both a bit dry. I like the bavarian cream in the chocolate cream donut, but it was nothing special. The red blaming donut is nothing more than a cinnamon donut with some sprinkles. The donuts are a notch above Dunkin’ Donuts. The locals go to Blue Star — I can see why.
The donuts aren’t worth the wait. Luckily, the line wasn’t too long when i was there at 10pm on Sunday. It’s much longer during the day and in the evening. While waiting in line, be careful! The donut shop is in a shady area and plagued with homeless people. This guy came right up to my boyfriend in the parking lot and scared us as we were walking towards the donut shop. The parking lot across the street is very expensive, I recommend street parking a block away. No better way to wait in line than people asking you for money! It was so bad that we didn’t even bother to sit down and nibbled on the donuts when we got to the car.
If you’re really curious about the donuts, I recommend going to the other location — Voodoo Donut 2 or not going to the Chinatown location at night. I think you’ll be more impressed with Blue Star.

First time in Portland so you know we had to make a stop at Voodoo Doughnuts!
We were expecting an epic line in the morning, especially since it was National Donut Day, but to our surprise, it was less than a 10 minute wait!
Line moves pretty quick so you better be prepared to give your order when it’s your turn. We ordered the Voodoo doll and maple bacon bar donuts. Both came up to $ 5 and change.
Donuts were fresh, fluffy, and tasty! No complaints from us. Voodoo has lots of outdoor tables to enjoy your fresh donuts incase you can’t wait to get home or the office.

I’m not entirely sure why this place is so popular and has such a long line. I feel the 2 hour wait usually turned me off, but their donuts were just so so too. My boyfriend and I were visiting portland for a week and decided to walk by here every time we were near the area and every time there was such a long wait. It wasn’t until some random Monday night at maybe 11pm when there was no line that we were finally able to try it. I got the maple bacon and I don’t remember what he got, but it wasn’t particularly tasty. I understand donuts are supposed to be sweet, but it just felt like the whole thing was entirely sugar and overwhelmingly sweet.
I definitely prefer blue star because I feel they have a much better balance of flavor and the dough to frosting ratio.

Go here for the experience but not the best donut…
I came here on a trip to Portland because I had heard so much about it, both on TV and from other people. As is usually the case when things are over hyped, there was a line out the door. The line did move quickly. There are so many choices of donuts! Indecisive be warned! They have s menu on the blackboard but there is also a case of rotating donuts that aren’t even listed. I was stressed out by the choices and the speed at which you move through the line.
Overall I appreciated the experience and interesting variety of donuts. They also have vegan donuts. My biggest complaint east hat the donuts did not taste that fresh.

Super touristy place. The lines can get long during peak hours. I ordered a dozen for $ 25. The donuts tasted decent but does not match the hype and the price. This is one of those places that you only line up once for. If you are ordering, must get the Voodoo Doll doughnut since that is their signature donut. The Voodoo Doll is a yeast doughnut filled with raspberry jelly topped with chocolate frosting and a pretzel stake! Very instagram worthy.

I’m extremely compelled to write a review about Voodoo Doughnuts because of the huge rave surrounding this place. We started off our visit arriving at the Skidmore stop along the blue MAX line. Advice, hold your children close. The alley where Voodoo is located is littered with homeless people.
To start off our experience, the line wasn’t that long. We waited about 5 minutes. The doughnuts are on another level as far as their names and toppings. We had the butter fingering donut and the marshal mathers donut with m&ms. Both were just extremely sweet. As far as the donut goes, they weren’t anything memorable.
The visit was definitely worth the experience. I recommend visiting during the day around 12 – 2 to avoid large lines. I will say that I will be back to give this place a second shot. I never like to turn a place down after one visit.

TL;DR: there are much better doughnuts to be had for much less of a wait.
We got there around midnight on a Saturday, and waited in line for about an hour.
(Side note: while waiting in line, a grumpy man walked past us shouting, «It’s just doughnuts, people! Where are your priorities?!» I mean yeah, it is just doughnuts, and turns out they weren’t even that great, but it’s still our time and money to spend how we choose. Why the judgement? It’s Saturday night and we’re hankering for something sweet. It’s not like we would have been volunteering at a soup kitchen feeding the homeless or working overtime discovering a cure to cancer, IF ONLY we got our priorities straight and didn’t waste our precious time on doughnuts instead!)
So anyway, doughnuts! We got a Voodoo dozen, which is server’s choice, a combination of raised (with toppings like crushed oreo, cocoa puffs, etc), filled (with cream, custard, etc), and classic. I asked if one of them could be the iconic Voodoo doll doughnut, and was denied. Fair enough as it’s more expensive.
I ate at least 5 doughnuts and took sampling bites out of more. (This is a safe space for such confessions, right? You guys aren’t judging me?) My favorites were the Boston cream, the «Homer Simpson», and the maple glazed, as they had the most flavor and best texture. A lot of the other promising ones like crushed Oreo turned out to be disappointingly dry and bland.
Overall these were far from the best doughnuts I’ve had.

Came here at a very off-​peak time around 4pm, and only had to wait about 15 minutes.
Got the maple bacon bar, which was a little on the stale side since I came later in the day, but a decent doughnut nonetheless. The bacon was thick cut, and the maple flavor in the frosting really came through. It seemed like a good representation of the type of doughnuts they had there, and I think I made the right choice. Unfortunately, this was the only doughnut I was able to try because we were both full to bursting from food from the day.
Everyone told me that Blue Star was the place to go for great doughnuts, and I’m inclined to agree with them. However, Voodoo’s doughnuts are, on average, at a lower price point, and a better value if you don’t want to spend $ 3+ on one doughnut. Yet, the other, more outrageous creations are about as expensive, including the cock and balls, and the actual voodoo doll shaped doughnut. The staff is really friendly and outgoing, and we felt right at home.
The creativity is there, and I truly think it’s become sort of a representation of Portland in the long run. It’s definitely on the odd side, and the staff really has fun with it. I’m not quite sure I would go out of my way to come here after visiting, but if you’ve never made a visit and the line isn’t too long, I’d give it a shot.

Came here during the day and they told me the wait was 2 hours long. Drove by here on accident again later at night and there was barely any line!
All the locals recommended me not to come here because it’s all hype and to try blue star donut instead, but blue star donut sells out quick if you don’t go earlier and we were in the area again with no line so why not.
I only got to try 3 donuts, the voodoo donut, bacon donut, and apple fritter.
Out of the 3, my personal favorite was the voodoo donut. It’s design is super cute and I also love chocolate. Inside there is a strawberry filling as well!
The bacon donut is decent as well, not too sweat and mixed with a little salty bacon on top is actually a really good mix.
The apple fritter tastes just like an apple pie. You can actually taste the apple chunks and also the cinnamon with it.
There are so many good donut shops in SoCal and also blue star not too far down the street, I think this place is def overrated and nowhere near 2 hour wait time. Come only if the wait less like 15mins.

No Portland trip is complete without trying Voodoo doughnuts. Small line when my girlfriend and I got there in the afternoon and so we only waited 10 – 15 minutes which wasn’t bad at all. When we got inside, my eye immediately locked onto the Blue Moon Pie. I haven’t eaten a doughnut in years so I was really excited to try it.
One of the best doughnuts I have ever eaten! I knew I was in for a treat when I took that first bite and the doughnut was so soft and fresh. As I kept eating, my mouth was bombarded with all that chocolate, the over abundance of graham crackers, and to my surprise, so much marshmallow fluff inside! Once I hit that fluff, it was all over. It was like a s’more on steroids with each bite overwhelming me and my taste buds into sweet sugary ecstasy. HIGHLY RECOMMEND getting the Blue Moon Pie!

It’s been a few years since traveling back to one of my favorite and beautiful, yet grungy and homeless infested city of Portland Oregon. But thanks to the Food Channel, the first thing that runs into my head now is the hot pink, psychedelic, Voodoo Donuts instead of grunge or the homeless.
How crazy is it that a city can be defined by a doughnut shop? Isn’t that the whole Insanity of it though, with Voodoo Doughnuts exemplifying almost the perfect metaphor for Portland Oregon? It’s like the brainchild or ultimate fantasy of a late 30-​something, can’t hold a job, pot palate infused, and gaming addicted basement dweller. The perfect donut idea generator.
And considering I fall into that demographic, being a director of sales at one of the most insane companies out there, how lucky was I to have one located just across the street from my hotel. I’m talking like a one and a half minute meander.
As the Southwest famiglia made our way through the droves of homeless looking for free donuts or dollars, you could see the psychedelically pink infused sugar catastrophe that was about to happen.
Being my first time to voodoo donuts, and being the purest that I am, I decided to go with one chocolate, one glaze, and one Homer Simpson! I ate them in that order and to say that my euphoria heightened with each bite, maybe the understatement of the year. I would rank them respectively with the homer Simpson being the pinnacle of donuty chewiness, with a light sugary crispness on the outside perfection!
Sadly I do not believe the treadmill had enough belt to cover the distance I needed to run that off so I added another 30mins of burpees when I got back to the room.
All worth it and would do it again and again.
Portland has truly earned its reputation as home to the best donut shop around. I will be counting every second until my return next snowboarding season!

Finally decided to give into the hype about these doughnuts at Voodoo when I was heading out to check out the «Keep Portland Weird» in the morning. No line outside!
Wow, when I entered it was a pink room of euphoria. Blown away by all the colorful doughnuts revolving in the glass cabinet. You’ll have to check for yourself. Highly recommend going early before 9am to beat the crowd!

So, here’s the other side of the coin… in my VOODOO vs BLUE STAR Donut reviews…

In my review of Blue Star, I mentioned after talking to locals in Portland there was a clear enough divide between fans of Blue Star and Voodoo much like in the world of Cola’s there’s clear cut fans of Coca Cola and others who are loyal with passion to Pepsi. We spoke to Über Drivers, local friends, the hotel staff and anyone we could question, receiving different answers and an almost equal divide between the two.
Here’s the reasons why I felt Voodoo won for ms.
I feel the pricing at Voodoo is fair and reasonable with most donuts being in that $ 2 – 3 price range (I think, as I didn’t ask, but came home with a box of donuts for $ 15).
The store has a very fun vibe to it, it doesn’t take itself so seriously.
The service was very friendly and patient as well as helpful, since it’s a CASH ONLY business and always crowded from what I hear (when we went on a Friday mid day afternoon with the weather in the 80’s, there was no line!).
The donuts were good portions and tasty. Some were really creative in design like the «Jason of Friday the 13^th» one we got on ⁰⁵⁄₁₃ Friday. The flavors are also unique. It’s really really sweet stuff.
I saw many visitors tote boxes at PDX Portland’s Airport to bring ‘em back home, so it’s a well known place, sort of novelty and curiosity type food.
The only downside to this is the location on the outskirts of Chinatown near what smells like skid row.

Lived up the HYPE! We were not disappointed! Being new to Portland we had to stop by for a bite, we walked from downtown waterfront to VooDoo. I know craziness but we wanted to explore Portland. Well worth the 45min + walking adventure. We stopped in on a Thursday afternoon around 2−3pm and on Friday 13^th around 1 – 2 NO LINES! I was preparing myself to wait for hours but no lines out the door.
First round we tried only one it was the ODB: Old Dirty Bastard Doughnut Raised yeast doughnut with chocolate frosting, Oreo’s and peanut butter. Sounds crazy but it works so well together! I don’t know how they come up with these flavors but please don’t stop! It was 88 degrees outside but we devoured that donut before it even had time to melt outside.
Round two day two in Portland. We decided to order a few to go this time. It’s Friday 13^th we had to get their classic raspberry filled voodoo doll donut, Butterfingering Doughnut: Chocolate cake doughnut with vanilla frosting and Buttefinger crumbles, No Name Doughnut: Raised yeast doughnut with chocolate frosting, rice krispies and peanut butter!, and last but not least the Memphis Mafia Doughnut: Fried dough with banana chunks and cinnamon sugar covered in a glaze with chocolate frosting, peanut butter, peanuts and chocolate chips on top! I’m not a fritter fan but the mafia was amazing with the banana chunks. It’s pretty messy but which donut isn’t messy! We loved every donut!
I’ve bookmarked this location 3 times it was one of the highlights on our Portland trip!

My brother in law who is from Oregon told me to stop by here at some point during our trip to Oregon. The reviews are mixed and you see this shop in magazines all the time in the donut rankings, but we wanted to try it out! He mentioned to know what we wanted before we go in, and he was right, although it doesn’t seem like they have descriptions of all of their donuts online, they need to have that! Yes, the customer service could be better, but I get that they want to get people in and out as quickly as they can.
We stopped in to Voodoo on a weekday evening probably around 6 or so, and only had to wait inside in line behind probably 2 groups, so not much of a wait! We ordered three donuts — the bacon maple bar, dirt doughnut, and the no name doughnut.
They were all great! My least favorite was the no name doughnut — doughnut with chocolate frosting, peanut butter, and rice krispies. I noticed the peanut flavor more than the chocolate, so I was wanting more chocolate, but this was my husbands favorite! We both liked the bacon maple bar, the maple frosting was awesome, but my husband felt it needed more bacon or the bacon to be chopped up so you get bacon in every bite as a huge chunk would come off if you had a bite. My favorite was the dirt doughnut with oreos and vanilla frosting. Loved it!
I wish we would have had more time to stop in again because there are so many interesting flavors — they really need a sampler! Maybe next time!
The really only negative, is that it did not seem like it was in that good of an area, on the side of sketch, beggers out there in full force, so we got our donuts and quickly left.

Came here on a Friday afternoon, no line (score!). Although it made us have to think fast on what kind of donuts we should get though. Also our server was a bit rude and unfriendly which made the whole experience at Voodoo suck. Other than the service, the donuts was just as bad.
Ordered the Old Dirty Bastard, Voodoo Doll, Portland Cream, and Maple Bacon Donuts.
–Old Dirty Bastard: Too much going on in one donut. The Oreos were a bit stale, might have been out for a while
–Voodoo Doll: Also stale and wasn’t a big fan on their berry filling
–Portland Cream: Probably my favorite one, you can’t mess up on a cream donut
–Maple Bacon: Also a bit stale, only good part was the bacon
If you are going to be one of the iconic donut shops in Portland, at least keep the donuts fresh.

Best doughnuts ever?
Maybe, maybe not. The doughnuts were great, but the difference between the worst doughnuts I’ve ever had and best doughnuts I’ve ever had is relatively small. Even bad doughnuts are still pretty good.

My girlfriend and I were visiting Portland, so we decided to stop by the famous Voodoo Doughnuts for a late night snack. The line was out the door but not quite as long as I was picturing that it might be beforehand. We only waited in line for about 10 – 12 minutes before reaching the front of the line.
In the mean time, we were fortunate to see someone taking on the Tex-​Ass doughnut challenge in which one has a mere 80 seconds to engulf a Texas-​sized doughnut roughly equal to six normal-​sized doughnuts. This man made the challenge seem remarkably simple as he proceeded to inhale the doughnut while the staff chanted «Eat that ass!» repeatedly and his children jumped up and down yelling their own G-​rated words of encouragement. He made the challenge seem so easy, that I almost mentally talked myself into doing it, before realizing how silly I was. I saw that guy sitting outside afterwards, and the look on his face seemed to betray more than a little regret and perhaps an upset stomach.
My girlfriend and I ended up ordering five different doughnuts:
1. Captain my captain doughnut — I really enjoyed the crunchiness of the cereal and the textural contrast it provided to the fluffiness of the doughnut. The vanilla frosting really made the doughnut incredible. This is what a complete breakfast should be.
2. Portland cream doughnut — The Bavarian cream was rich and decadent. I think the chocolate frosting complemented the cream really well too.
3, 4. Marshall Mathers doughnut and the Diablos Rex — My girlfriend ordered these. I didn’t try either one, but she said they were good.
5. Glazed doughnut — Overall, the raised doughnuts were light and fluffy. The glaze was sweet and simple.
This place takes cash only, but there are definitely ATM machines around the area.
If you are visiting Portland and love doughnuts (the second qualifier is probably unnecessary), you should check out Voodoo Doughnuts.
To Voodoo Doughnuts, I say: «Now go do that voodoo that you do so well.»

This is one of the touristy things I had to do on my trip to Portland. We got lucky, we went to Voodoo around 10:15 on Sunday morning and the line was only 20 or so people deep. Additionally, we found parking right across the street. So, the experience was super easy for us. We were in and out in less than a half hour.
The joint is small. But, they keep the line moving in an orderly fashion. And, remember, you’ve (likely) had plenty of time in line to decide on your order, so be ready when you finally get up to the register. This way, you can get in and out and let other people who have been waiting in line get their sugary doughy fix.
We had several donuts, and while I couldn’t finish a single one, I tried 3 or 4. My favorite was the now ubiquitous (thanks to Voodoo) bacon maple bar. It was clearly fresh, the donut itself was pillowy and lighter than I was expecting. It is heavily covered in rich maple icing. It was rather thick, but good. And, of course, 2 slices of bacon on top. Bacon and just about anything sweet is good, and this is no exception. The thing was so rich, I got halfway through it.
I also tried the pothole, which is a chocolate cream filled donut with crumbled Oreos on top. I had one bite and that was it, it’s just too much. And, given the size and the number of toppings, difficult to eat, and it was even richer than the bacon maple bar. My son wanted rainbow sprinkles, so I tried that one. It was typical of that style of donut. I also tried an apple fritter, which was very large (no surprise) and good, but definitely not as memorable. It lacked the crispy bits that I love on fritters, but it did have plenty of apple flavor.
I give Voodoo 4 stars because of the variety, quality, and price. It’s not cheap for donuts, but I don’t think these are outrageously priced given the size and taste. I would not eat a meal here, it was more the experience of simply going to Voodoo. But, if you were to eat a meal, there is plenty of outdoor seating right outside the door, because the inside is tiny. I would say that Voodoo has earned its national reputation, but that being said, had I waited an hour or more for these donuts, I would have given Voodoo 3 stars. Under the right conditions (which we were lucky and found) it’s a great touristy thing to check out in Portland.

On fait un peu la queue, carrément meme,
un samedi soir de juillet.
(A la fois Portland c’est tellement cool que meme une queue pour un doughnut c’est d’la balle).
Après, il faut choisir! Des noms rocambolesques pas toujours compréhensibles pour des non natifs, vulgos et bien délires, quand on se fait expliquer, on regrette que la France né soit pas plus audacieuse dans ses parfums et noms de beignets…
et là, tu manges ton doughnut, et juste le reste de la terre n’existe plus.
Tu prends l’équivalent de 10ans de graisse et de sucre, mais tu t’en fiches parce que ton doughnut érable bacon, et ta Voodoo Doll (une petite poupée au chocolat avec un stick en bretzel que si lui ouvres le bide elle saigne de la confiture), ben ton doughtnut, là, il te restera en mémoiré pour le reste de ta vie. Et une fois quitté Portland, tu veux juste faire aucun autre voyage que de retourner làbas. Et de manger ces putains de beignets.
La petite boîte rose inoubliable. Un grand moment dans ma vie.
