Alterations by Paula

This place is horrible and completely unprofessional. I took my stepdaughters dress that she was supposed to wear to a wedding that was beautiful and specially ordered, they were supposed to fit it to her and shorten the length a tad, they cut it completely crooked by inches and when we took it in to complain they were not apologetic they acted more like it was our fault and then my husband overheard one of them in the back saying this is for a wedding its so short, yeah because they screwed it up not once but twice cutting inches off to try to fix their first mistake! The dress is totally ruined they wouldnt give us our money back and they are way overpriced I will never go there and do not recommend anyone going there either! Absolutely horrible!

This business must not need new customers. Alterations by Paula came recommended by A & A Prestige Cleaners so I assumed this would be a reputable business.
I have called 3 times in the last week and left 2 messages to be called back. Not one word from Alterations by Paula. I don’t have any more time to waste with this place.
Maybe a business model that works for them but they lost another customer before making any money from me.
If you have time to waste, then this is your place.

What a GREAT place to get quality work done at a very reasonable price. So glad I have found Paula and all the kind girls that work there. This will be the only place I will take my alteration needs to. So fast and professional. Especially my formal wear.

I googled and called every tailor I can find in the area looking for three things: Is this a good price? Is this good quality? Is this a company/​personality I’d like to continually give my business to?
I’m a researcher by nature so I’ve done this with tires, storage units and many other services because once I make a decision, I’m loyal to that business.
So when I called around town looking for pricing on hemming my dress pants, this is what I found out:
* Mens Wearhouse: Around $ 22, and the tailor was out of the office for the following week. Extremely professional and courteous gentlemen on the phone.
* Carmelitas Alterations: After a few tries calling, I found out it’s $ 12. The lady seemed almost bothered that I was calling her and like she wanted off the phone.
* Nanebell’s Creations: $ 10. It took me a few minutes to realize I had actually called the right place which struck me as odd. I had to explain that I was looking for a tailor and must have called the wrong number… Once she realized why I was calling (I’m assuming the business number must be her personal cell phone?) she said «Oh yeah that’s me!» was really friendly and funny, but didn’t instill much confidence when she said «Oh it’s not cuffed, that’s good! I’ve never done a cuffed pair of pants.»
* Barbara Stone Designs: Tried to call multiple times. Was never able to get a hold of anyone.
* K Sunset Tailor Shop & Tuxedo Rental: The number led me to a strange automated message saying there were two shops with the same number, one was a Tuxedo place in Roseville, the other a Shoe Mart, and I had to choose an option of which business to be connected to. Seemed sketchy.
* Sew What: Doesn’t do alterations, just a quilting store. Lady I talked to on the phone was very nice.
* Hokema’s Sewing Center: Doesn’t do alterations.
* Specialty Sewing and Dry Cleaning: $ 18, I could barely understand what the lady who answered the phone was saying.
* Sew Fabulous Studio: Doesn’t do alterations, just a school. But the very nice lady recommended me to Alterations by Paula, saying that they have done really good work for them before.
* Alterations by Paula: $ 12.50, the lady was very friendly, professional and courteous on the phone.
So to me, it seemed like Alterations by Paula was the sweet spot of price, professionalism, courtesy, and (if the reviews and recommendations are correct) quality.
The lady in the store wasn’t as bubbly as the girl on the phone. But she knew her stuff, was quick and very helpful. She even offered to remove the tags and basting from the jacket for free if I wanted to leave it with the pants, and gave me some advice on the fit of my suit (even though I just came in for some pants hemming) which gave me some confidence in my suit.
I picked my suit up at the planned time and agreed price and it fits perfectly. She took some time to look at another suit I had and offer some suggestions and pin it in certain places.
In Redding it’s rare to be treated with such professionalism and courtesy. I mentioned it to some friends and they all said they’d tried Paula’s and she was the best.
I have a lot of clothing that I’ve been meaning to have tailored a bit, and I know I’ve found my place.
I am now a loyal customer and will send everyone to Paula’s.

I took a pair of jeans in for a creations hem and they promised them in a week. I thought nothing about it until day 6 I got a call and they told me they couldn’t do the creations hem because of the taper. When I picked them up they were very rude about it. I would never recommend this place to anyone. They are unprofessional, and I wonder about their competence because I always get the creations hem else where and it is never a problem.

I had a pair of pants taken in at the waist here a few weeks ago. I wasn’t super happy with the tailoring because now the sides bulge out a little bit (looking like saddle bags) where the tailoring ends, but it wasn’t a big enough deal to complain about it. Well, then today at work the side of my pants where it had been stitched came open during a meeting and it was quite embarrassing as I didn’t notice and had a male coworker point it out after the meeting had ended. Going to have her fix it, and then not go back again. Poor quality work and it wasn’t cheap either.

The pricing is fair and the work ok quality (although the stitching of the hem for one of my pairs of pants shows more than I’m used to when I get this alteration)— but my real complaint about this business is how weirdly unfriendly the proprietor was. I came in and gave her a nice greeting with good-​natured smile, and honestly got nothing but a blank stare back and a half grunted ‘hi.’ Then, after paying for my items and a failed attempt to make small conversation, I asked (still with a very amiable tone) for directions somewhere and got nothing but another terse half-​grunted and annoyed-​sounding reply in return. If you don’t feel like treating your customers with a common sense of decency or are having a bad day, then fake it — especially when someone is going out of their way to be nice to you.

She really saved me when I needed pants hemmed quickly for an interview and the price was very good. Highly recommended.

I am fortunate to have found such an experienced tailor. I needed 3 things done to one dress and Paula fixed it good as new. I won’t go anywhere else. The pricing is very fair.

When we called Paula to alter a pair of pants she was prompt, friendly and did an exceptional job. The turnaround was amazing. Highly recommend her.
