Kal Academy

Best school that I ever go to. I attended data structure and algorithm class here. Kal teaches in a way that make complicated things look so easy. I would recommend Kal Academy to anyone who want to advance their skills in technology or start their career in tech.

Kal has a true passion and innate natural ability to teach. She is a wizard at making complex concepts easy to understand and her classes are affordable and welcoming. But what makes Kal truly amazing is that she genuinely cares for her students and also teaches us to believe in ourselves and have confidence. For someone like me who had zero coding experience going in, the emotional challenges were just as tough as the intellectual ones but she was there to support me all the way and now I will be starting my first coding internship at Microsoft in the next two weeks. :D
Here is what you should expect, classes are on the weekends, about an hour long and cost only $ 25! Like anything in life, you get out what you put in so if you do the work and follow along then you will be in great shape.

The Data Structures and Algorithms class helped to demystify and take a lot of the fear out of technical interviews. Kal Academy is one of the best coding school I ever had. I took Data Structure and Algorithms class with Kal. All the difficult and complicated concepts become simple to me through Kal’s teaching. Great value code academy for women — small, supportive, affordable class sizes focused on building skills and connecting to industry. The data structures and algorithms class is great for women who want help preparing for technical interviews. Also offered are classes in business analysis and data science, object-​oriented programming, and several others. As code schools go, this is a best-​kept secret that’s gaining lots of traction thanks in part to a strong connection and growing partnership with Microsoft. I graduated from another, far more $$ program and am getting a ton of value out of classes with Kal. Worth the weekly hike to Redmond! Kal has neatly organized classes and well laid-​out plans for helping and empowering women in tech industry for a fraction of cost. She pays individual attention to each class member and helps them grow their skills from fundamentals.
I have some experience in the tech field but I needed to brush up my skills before going back to work after a break. I was in for a big surprise because no other classes I’ve taken or studied myself has ever broken down any data structure at the fundamental level and neatly laid out the concepts.
Kal has always been happy to answer any questions I had, she would make us get up and code on the white board insisting that that’s how we’d be able to do it in real-​time interviews.

Kal Academy is Seattle Tech community’s best kept secret and also the reason why Seattle Tech community rocks. Founded and led by Kal V, a 20-​year industry veteran who is passionate about tech, teaching, and women in tech, this academy puts most coding schools to shame. Classes are conducted in a small group setting at literally a tiny fraction of the cost of the average coding schools. You’re getting a Maserati at the price of a Toyota, basically. The most popular class is the Data Structures & Algorithm course, a 12-​week program that covers infamous data structures and algorithm questions that all engineering candidates love to hate. This is the only class I’ve taken at Kal Academy, so this review is based on that.
The academy also has various tracks: Data Analyst, Game Development, App Development, and more, with different levels of prior knowledge. Most women come to the academy with little to no prior tech knowledge. Unlike typical coding schools (which I know firsthand, because I paid $ 9k to go to Code Fellows), the academy is based on the premise that you’ll put in what you want to get out of it. They treat you like an adult: you go to class weekly, do your homework, get feedback on that homework, and participate in a real-​life project if you choose to, but no one is going to make you study 5 hours a day, 5 days a week like they would in most coding schools.
Kal is one of the best teachers, if not the best, I’ve met (and my mom was a teacher. Sorry, mom!). It’s super rare to find someone who has both the industry experience and the passion for teaching, and Kal is that unicorn. She brings years of experience at leading tech companies (she is still at Microsoft), and she’s as dedicated to teaching as she is about tech. Her curriculum is relevant and she easily breaks down really complex concepts. Her classes are always interactive, which means you better be on top of your shit or else you’ll end up staring at the whiteboard wanting to pee your pants. Despite her prestigious experience and degrees, Kal is super down to earth and encouraging. I think that’s one of everyone’s favorite part about Kal: she’s super positive and doesn’t take things too seriously. The academy also has some of the best partnerships with leading tech companies in the community and offers personalized job search help from someone who knows the industry well.
If you’re thinking about transitioning to a career in tech, Kal Academy will hands down provide the most impact and the best value.
