Cake Break

After personally visiting this bakery several times to sample their vegan cupcakes and frosting I chose to have them make my small wedding cake and cupcakes for our guests. They have the best choc. frosting! The husband/​baker was very pleasant and nice however, we had to deal with Debbie the wife when placing our order. After several emails back and forth regarding exactly what we wanted to order for our big day I telephoned her as she requested in an email she had sent me two days prior. She stated she was upset I did not call her that day she indicated in the email and that she «was ready to give up on me», and I needed to call her back with credit card numbers by the end of the day, I explained I don’t check my email daily and that I was working a 12 hr shift this day but called immediately when I saw the email… I don’t carry my credit cards or purse to work. She reiterated to call back with numbers and hung up on me. Frantic I called my fiancé who was off work and could call the bakery back and give her credit card numbers. Debbie was also rude and short with him and again hung up on him. Desperate as we didn’t have another vegan baker, my fiancé called her right back, she did apologize, and we placed the order.
When our order was picked up the day of the wedding (by the best man) our cake was incorrectly iced with vanilla, and all the cupcakes had vanilla frosting as well, as opposed to half vanilla half chocolate. There was very little frosting on the cupcakes unlike the ones served in the bakery that we had sampled so many times. Big disappointment when paying $ 3 a cupcake! We did receive a full refund on our wedding cake as a mistake was made. I would recommend anyone even thinking of going with this bakery to personally make an appointment to sit down and chat with Debbie in the store as you will then have her undivided attention and she may not be so stressed.

Resisted the urge to get a sticky bun nearly the length of my forearm for a more modestly sized (and therefore diet-​justifiable) lemon cupcake.
Yes.
Just the right size, the right amount of filing and the right amount of frosting. I say «right amount of frosting,» meaning what is normal and proportional, but to be honest, if they tripled it, I’d be okay with that. I do tend to thing of cupcakes as frosting delivery systems… but that’s my problem! I’M WORKING ON IT OKAY DON’T JUDGE ME!

Amazing, light, and creative cupcakes! Definitely worth a stop!

We attended a wedding in Rehobeth Beach earlier this month and Cake Break catered the wedding cake and the groom’s cake.
Judging from the 4 cupcakes I ate (I’m 9 months pregnant and I’m sticking to that excuse! also, one of the waiters took away half a cupcake while I was dancing so clearly I had to replace that loss…) and the 2 cupcakes my husband ate, the cupcakes were delicious. I’m not sure if the flavors are all flavors you can get at the store or if any were special order but they were all delicious and really darling looking.
* carrot cake with cream cheese icing: carrot cake was moist but not greasy. crucial distinction in the carrot cake realm!
* chocolate chip chocolate with a buttercream: so. very. chocolatey. the buttercream was a bonus but the chocolate cake was really right on point for me. i believe it was also the base for the groom’s cake’s bowling pin cupcakes.
* strawberry cake with pinnacle whipped vodka icing: my husband never let me try this one. allegedly because of the vodka in the icing. I have a suspicion it was more because he’s not good at sharing. but I heard it was tasty and not boozy.
there were also red velvet and vegan chocolate varieties that I never tried. that’s right, I _​did_​leave some for the other guests!
At the wedding, I heard a few folks in the know talking about how Cake Break also had a mean sticky bun in the mornings. We had to set out early the morning after the wedding and they opened at 7 a.m. so we swung by the store (just two blocks from our hotel The Breakers) before we hit the road. We got there at about 8:15 a.m. and no joke, the lady said, «Sorry, we just sold our last two.»
It was 8:15 a.m. on a Sunday! How could there be a run on sticky buns?! But there was.
They were making another batch though and a catering order for my friend’s post-​wedding farewell brunch included some of these sticky buns and because of the aforementioned pregnancy, the lady took pity on me and sold me one from the catering order. (She promised to replace it with the batch that was in the oven before the order got picked up. Also, if we were able to stay to attend the brunch ourselves, I wouldn’t have had to resort to pulling the crazy pregnant lady bit so please forgive!)
The sticky buns were good. The pastry was a little too soft with the glaze for my taste though. And the glaze was not sticky enough. (Yup, after all that!) Because of that, I would put it more in the honey bun category.
We also got two croissants (which was my plan B before the lady found a bun for us): 1 blueberry cream cheese-​filled and 1 raspberry cream cheese-​filled. These were KILLER. The crispy flake on the outside was a perfect combination with the soft croissant and just the perfect amount of filling. The cream cheese tang with the fruit filling was amazing. It’s probably what toaster streudels are supposed to taste like but don’t. I am drooling remembering them.
We did _​not_​however have any more cupcakes. Cause I already had two I had taken «to go» from the wedding. :)

Cake Break has become a «must do» on every visit to Rehoboth Beach we take. Carrot cake was very moist, which is most important to me! We Also had the Cinco De Mayo special with spicy chocolate frosting and loved it! We come from DC and prefer Cake Break over DC Cupcake any day. Very friendly service.

A friend of mine told me about this place, so I decided to give it a try. I ordered two dozen ‘specialty’ cupcakes to be delivered to a local business. The entire transaction was conducted via email & telephone with absolutely no problem. The woman that I spoke with listened carefully to understand exactly what my needs were, and patiently took her time to explain a variety of options. Ultimately, I wound up going with the Dogfish Head Worldwide Stout cupcakes, with Bailey’s Irish Cream frosting, and Jameson’s chocolate shavings. I feel as though I received an excellent value for my money. They even delivered the cupcakes and emailed me a picture afterwards. These days, you have to search long and hard to find this level of customer service. Believe me, it’s worth paying for. Although I never actually got to try the cupcakes, I’ve received nothing but rave reviews from their recipients. Thanks to Cake Break. I’m feeling the love!

I thought that they were a little small compared to other cupcake places we’ve been to in other areas (Plymouth Ma and Morgantown WV) for the price $ 3 each. I don’t think the cake tasted stale Like some other people said but we did find the icing to be greasy. It was a nice little local shop and I loved the idea of offerings for kids to decorate their own cupcakes (which is what drew us in). It was okay but nothing special.

We stopped in one morning for something quick for breakfast on our way to the beach. Everyone managed to find something they liked. Good enough that we went back on our last morning — the only place in Rehobeth Beach that we went to more than once.

Breakfast was rather standard, but their desserts rock. Tried their red velvet cake pop — I could have had ten more. Moist cake wrapped in delicious chocolate.

We came here for the vegan cupcakes and although they were «good» they don’t compare to what we are used to back in DC. Still, we appreciate the fact that they make both vegan and gluten free pastries. Some more vegan treats would have been nice– we only had one cupcake to choose from (with 2 different icings).

It is a great little shop, but I did find it expensive. Their icings and ganache are amazing (sometimes not enough), but I have often found that the cupcakes are too dry. That is my biggest complaint, and makes me so sad, because as I stated the icings — well I could bathe in them. The smore cupcake is very yummy, I wish there were a few more over the top cupcakes as well. Something with more of a «wow» value, especially if they want me to pay the prices they are asking

I’m a fan of small local businesses and as such, was happy to visit Cake Break. They’re a small Mom and Pop shop where you can meet the owners who are a very nice and personable «Mom and Pop» couple. We had a great time chatting with the owner who’s love of running this shop beamed from him as he happily discussed opening this store earlier this year (May 2010).
As we chatted, the Cake Break owner heard our complaints about the DC cupcake places (specifically the one with the reality show) and how their prices and marketing gimmicks overshadowed the actual taste of their namesake; the cupcake. The taste of Cake Break’s cupcakes were wonderfully well balanced and very gooooooooood. The cupcake was moist, the frosting wasn’t too sweet and the overall flavor was fresh and perfect.
For the kids, they had a wonderful idea to keep them entertained: Decorate your own cupcakes! Kids can pick out their own «basic» cupcakes with simple colored frosting and then take their cupcake over to a decorating station. This station had a huge assortment of sprinkles, M&Ms and other sweet treats. Our monkeys loved decorating their cupcakes almost as much as devouring their custom decorated sweet mini-​cakes of goodness.
Cake Break also does a great job for anyone that’s allergic to peanuts or nuts by not carrying any nut based ingredients inside their store. Thankfully, none of us have such allergies but its great information for anyone that has a serious allergy to nuts. Also, vegans are welcome as there are all vegan cupcakes and gluten free treats for those that cannot or will not eat gluten products.
We loved the store, loved the owners who truly made our «Cake Break» a fun, warm and welcoming one. We’ll definitely be return on our next beach visit and truly wish the owners the best with their new beach side cupcake business. :-)

Tasty cupcakes but $ 3.00 a piece. Not sure if they are worth 3 but they are tasty. I had a vanilla with buttercream icing w sprinkles. reminded me of wedding cake… yum!

Hey there Cake Break i want to thank you so much for an amazing,
Birthday Mohawk cake for my boy Bryen OBoyle (lead singer of Mr. Greengenes). The cake was extremely tasty and was the hit of the Birthday celebration at the Paddock in Ocean City MD. In fact after eating most of the cake a small piece was memorialized on the ceiling
of the Paddock and is till there today. so check it out and thanks again you guys rock

Tasty, tasty stuff — strawberry were my favorite, but everything I had was fresh and delicious and served with a smile. Coffee was awesome too! :-D

We came in hoping for a good cupcake and were disappointed. The cake was dry, had no flavor and the icing was scarce. They weren’t pretty to look at either. I felt we paid too much for a product that was amateurish and lacking.
