Description

Specialties

Mother & baby Matters is a highly specialized and comprehensive maternal-infant-family doula service in the Washington DC Metro area designed to support mothers and their families during the wonderful but overwhelming time surrounding childbirth, or adoption of a newborn.

The goal of our program is to assist the new mother and her partner in creating a personally fulfilling birth and postpartum experience. Motherly care and guidance are provided by a professional staff of doulas, (pronounced Doo-la) a Greek word for those who mother the mother. These doulas can be either labor support birth doulas or postpartum (after the birth) doulas.

History

Established in 1991.

Mother & baby Matters, Inc. (formerly Mother’s Matters), developed our program in 1991 to meet an evident need for supportive care to families before, during and after childbirth. Today’s mobile society has separated many families who may not be readily available to help at this special time. Alternative birth situations, work responsibilities, and early hospital discharges are other factors that have created a need for the type of services provided by Mother & baby Matters, Inc.

The company was founded and incorporated as the first postpartum Doula home-care service in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Lactaction Consultant services were added in 1992 and Labor Support Doulas soon followed in 1993. In 1995, the Family Care Assistant program was added to provide non-technical support to prenatal high-risk clients to prenatal high risk clients on bed rest and assist mothers with their families during the postpartum period with routine household chores and activities.
