Richmond Heights Community Center

The Richmond Heights Community Center is great. Clean, updated, and has a great gym, indoor pool, and even the library.
Their pool has lap lanes, a hot tub, and a great waterslide and whirlpool area. Definitely top notch for a community center. The locker rooms are clean and modern.
The gym is upstairs and has lots of machines but is typically crowded at peak times. They have a track that oversees the basketball courts. Machines are clean and you can usually get the machine what you want.
The library has a good selection. Basically this is a fun place to go if you want to do any of the things they offer here.

The Heights is a wonderful place offering a good variety of activities for a single person and for an entire family! I have been looking for a new gym because as much as I like working out in my basement, there are workout equipments that I need but do not own and I really did not want to renew my membership at the old gym. In short, I needed a change of scenery and I found it here!
I did a one-​day pass before committing to a full year membership. I came in on a rainy Tuesday and heard someone saying how packed it was. I was very surprised by that comment and started looking around only to find that compared to my old gym, the place was pretty dead. Please note that I did come in around 9:30am and for good reasons. I was trying to avoid the crowd but as it turns out, this place is hardly ever crowded during the times I like to go. They have newer equipments here and there’s always a cardio machine available no matter when you come in. I have been here after work and after dinner (around 6 or 7pm) andstill found a machine away from other people on cardio days.
I did talk to the person working up front when I signed up about the classes and the membership does come with 5 free sessions and then you have to pay for the rest if you would like to continue. There is also a card for free aquatic class when you sign up. They have toddler services as well but I told her I did not need it and that I would rather get something else so she offered the aquatic class card. There is also a free guest pass when you sign up. I haven’t had the chance to try out any of their classes yet but I was thinking of trying out spinning one of these days.
The locker room is pretty nice. It smells quite a bit like chlorine because of the pool but I don’t mind. There is a sauna and a hot tub but I haven’t used either yet. As far as the fitness center goes, I really like this place. Last but not least, this is a very economical gym especially if you are a Brentwood, Maplewood or Richmond Heights resident!

My new gym! Ignore the fact that I joined a gym as a New Years Resolution to get back into running along with hundreds (okay thousands) of other Americans who make these silly promises and don’t keep them by the third week in January.
«The Heights» is totally rad. Come here for the clean locker rooms. There’s a family locker room for you and your toddlers (currently undergoing floor renovations-​but I think that will be done soon). The pool is huge, with a slide, kiddie pool area and lap lanes. Treadmills? Plenty at 5pm, I haven’t had to wait, or I just have had really good luck. There’s an indoor track where 16 laps is a mile (um, dizzy much?). Basketball courts if you didn’t get cut from the 7^th grade team and don’t have a resentment toward that whole god-​for-​saken sport and actually like playing basketball.
I have a friend (shout out Joy Jones!) who teaches classes here that I have yet to take. But soon I will get up enough guts to take on her challenges. Maybe I’ll try my legs at spinning-I’ve only fallen off twice before.
Oh…and the price is AHMAHZING. $ 20 a month for a single lady. You’d have to look up your own cost. I’m not your financial planner.

This is my neighborhood gym and it is great for what it is. There are no bells and whistles, but the gym is clean and there are plenty of treadmills and tvs. There’s a cool pool and basketball courts and this place has what I need. The membership fee for a family is ridiculously cheap, so what else could you ask for?

I think this place is really great. If you’re looking for a plain and simple gym membership and live in the area, you’ll get a great deal at The Heights. For a single person, the yearly membership is $ 225 for a resident and $ 390 for a non-​resident. Not bad! And you’re really scoring if you’re a resident. When you get a membership, you have access to the gym, swimming pool, and basketball courts. All facilities are very nice, and there is a good amount of equipment for use. I’ve never had a problem finding a free machine when I’m there.
Unfortunately, group classes are an extra cost, but that’s what keeps the overall membership cost so low. They have a Fit Pass that you can buy that allows you access to the group classes, and it’s not too expensive. They offer some good classes too! Boot Camp kicks your butt, and there are some great yoga options.
The Heights isn’t just a gym either. For families, they offer quite a few classes for children and seem to have several community events to get people involved. I think this is a great community center!

Great place to work out. For the most part staff is very friendly. Too many non-​members sneak in and once or twice a year there are fights in the gym. Bring a lock for your locker. Bring a towel or rent one for a dollar, fifty cents back when you return it.
There is a great free weight area along with all the regular machines. Nice walking track above the gym area. When it’s working the spa is great. Breaks down quite often… but that is mainly because people don’t shower before getting in the spa. There needs to be some supervision in the locker rooms. A lot of horseplay on the weekends. Regular hours are. 530 am to 9:30 pm monday through thursday with the pool and spa area closing a half hour earlier. Call for weekend hours.

Aquatic center: If you’re a young adult without kids looking to get in a little fun swimming and maybe tan this is NOT the place for you. You will be bored out of your mind and feel very very awkward. The only section of the aquatic center that appealed to me was the hot tub… except it was full of a bunch of old dudes. (no offense to the old dudes, just wasn’t how the only 20something woman in the pool planned to spend her day). You’re better off going to the Maplewood pool.
As the other reviewers have mentioned, if you’ve got some kids that you need to occupy for a few hours, this is a great place for them.

Meh. Maybe I’ve been spoiled by Wellbridge, or maybe I’m just not easy to please when it comes to gyms. Perhaps it’s a little bit of both.
I don’t know. The Heights is convenient and cheap, but it just doesn’t do it for me.
The machines are nice, and there’s a nice variety for sure. But during peak hours, it’s REALLY hard to get a treadmill. More times than not, I’d have to walk laps around the machines while I waited for someone to hop off. Not fun.
Classes are not included in the membership fee, so you have to pay extra for those. As someone who works a 9 – 5, many of the classes were inconvenient. Who are all of these people who can take a spin class at 9am or 2pm on a weekday? Retirees? People who work from home? Stay at home moms? I don’t know, but for 95% of the population, those times just aren’t convenient. Yeah, I’m bitter about it. I shouldn’t write Unilocal reviews when I’m cranky.
Anyway, yeah. This wasn’t a terrible place, but you do get what you pay for. If classes were included in the membership fee, maybe I’d still be a member. But… yeah. I can do better elsewhere.

So I had bought the Groupon at the beginning of the summer with the intent of taking advantage of the facilities for the pool with my son. Finally got around to getting over there last weekend and we went two times. The aquatic area is pretty cool, but most definitely not a traditional pool. They have a large area that is for younger kids, perhaps a foot deep in most places, up to maybe 2 feet deep. There is a small slide and some other things to keep a small child entertained.
Towards the far end you will find the cyclone/​whirlpoo. It’s a circular pool about eight feet in diameter that attaches to the main pool area that has a swift swirling current. If you just float in there you will go round and round until you have had enough and exit. Located next to the cyclone pool is the «lazy river». 44 laps around the lazy river equals one mile, so you can tell the lazy river is pretty small. If you are trying to tire out a six year old though, it’s pure genius. Possibly the best part is the slide. It is not very big, but it’s fun. Kids have to be taller than about four feet to use the slide, otherwise the life guard will tell them no go. A couple small kids walked away very disappointed at this fact, but it is a safety thing.
I have not checked out any other part of The Heights Community Center so I cannot talk to that. They have some courts where I saw people playing basketball and I know they have a cardio and weight room that overlooks the pool area. If I lived closer I think I would consider joining up, but since I do not I will use as much of my Groupon as I can and call it a great deal.

I love the Heights! I feel so lucky to have a facility that is so close, very affordable, and gives me everything I need for my workouts.
If you live in Richmond Heights, Maplewood, or Brentwood, a membership is only about $ 220 a year (I think the rates change yearly, so I’m not positive). That is pretty affordable in my opinion, especially considering the wonderful equipment they offer. I have been a member of the gym for over 2 years now, and I have noticed that they have replaced many of the weight machines and cardio equipment throughout the time since I’ve belonged. I can really tell they are dedicated to providing quality, up-​to-​date equipment.
Also, the other members of the gym seem to be pretty normal people… no meatheads or anyone else that might make it intimidating to go there. I also really like that there are TONS of TVs in the cardio area, so I can watch my favorite show while I work out, and lots of free magazines provided, so I’ve been able to read a lot of the popular magazines without subscriptions!
One of the downfalls is that it is not a huge place, so between 5−7pm, the place gets pretty crowded. This can be really annoying when I have planned to do a elliptical workout, but all the machines are taken. Also, the free weights area can get pretty overcrowded with dudes during this time, which can be pretty intimidating for me. Also, my only other complaint is that it closes at 9:30pm. I wish it would stay open another hour or so.
Other than that, I have loved being a member of the Heights. I just know to try to make it there after 8pm or earlier in the day so I don’t have to worry about it getting too crowded.

I’ve been very happy with my decision to get a membership at The Heights. There are quite a few cardio machines of various sorts, a small indoor track, and a lot of free weights and machines. There’s also a pretty elaborate pool complex that I don’t use but by which I am, nevertheless astonished.
I like working out in the morning but even when I’ve come in the afternoons, I’ve been able to get my workout done with a minimum of hassle. The crowd is inevitably very different depending on when you go. Morning is for older folks, die-​hards and… well…me. The afternoon crowd is younger with all the various young-​people-​gym-​behavior that entails.
The cost isn’t exorbitant and, for me, serves as motivation to keep going in if you take the option to pay it all up front. All in all, a very good experience and a place I enjoy working out.
The one down side is the showers. They aren’t terrible but they also aren’t great. There is often a bit of a funk.

I’ve belonged to several other gyms, including a 24-​hour chain and a local YMCA, and none of them beat The Heights. I joined a few months ago, and I think the facility is great. They have excellent quality, updated cardio/​weight equipment and a great staff. Aside from those rare occasions when I arrive at the same time as everyone else (usually after work on weekdays between 5−6pm), there are always plenty of available machines to use.
Only complaints: limited hours and few free group exercise classes (though the schedule of classes in general is adequate).

I’m actually a member of the Heights and a big fan! Compared to other gyms that I’ve been a member of, this place is awesome. There is enough equipment/​machines to go around so there’s never a wait to work out. The staff is nice, but not «stare you down and offer help every five minutes». The members are all very nice, normal and the meathead population is minimal. And they have a deal worked out with the Maplewood community pool in the summertime, so if you want to use an outdoor pool it’s very easy to do so using your Heights membership pass.
Will renew my membership when its up again in Spring 2010.

I’m writing this review as someone who has utilized the meeting rooms at The Heights. I have led several seminars in their meeting rooms and the rooms have always come set up the way I request and they plenty of extension cords for laptops and projectors. In addition, the wifi is free, the prices for rental space is right and the staff is kind; wait, why am I giving away my secrets?
