Whisk

I am pretty bummed about Whisk. I really loved Globehopper as a place to spend hours and though it was lacking decent food you still wanted to stay because it felt comfortable and the coffee was good. Whisk is just too delicate, lacking space (but backyard is nice) and the pastries are just so-​so. Their plain croissant is like a brick. They also don’t seem so fresh. Where is the flakiness? There are way too many flavor variations when the basic croissant has not even been perfected yet. I keep going back thinking that it will get better, but it hasn’t. It’s just always «ok» but never a place I recommend meeting people at and hanging around. I literally live across the street from Whisk and want it to be better than it is, but it’s just mediocre.

I loved everything about this shop being right around the corner and easy for a quick bite to eat or a nice latte! But the only drawback I’ve experiences is the service. There’s one person who I consistently find to be short whenever we go in who works the front of house, and makes me uncomfortable! Missing the southern hospitality charm for sure! If I’m going to be paying upwards of $ 3.50 for a *delicious* cookie or macaroon I’d like to at least feel like the person isn’t being short with me and enjoys their job!
Otherwise, great store. The owner is very kind and all of the other employees are genuinely friendly!

Pistachio puff is so yummy. Not like industrial, premade cream at all. Relatively expensive, but worth it!

My rating is more off of their atmosphere than anything. The shop is beautiful and has big windows which lets in the light. They have lots of pastries which look cute but don’t woo me to be honest. The hot chocolate wasn’t anything out of this world but hey it was nice on the rainy day that I can in here. This atmosphere is pretty peaceful since its away from most of downtown but honestly this isn’t my favorite in RVA. It depends on what you look for in a coffee shop really.

An absolute delight! They make the pastries on site. When you walk in the you instantly get hit with the delectable smell of something baking. Wether you come in for a sandwich or a croissant, you can’t go wrong! They make loaves of bread for purchase, I bought french bread– wonderful! I have had many of their croissant flavors, each moist and mouth watering till the last bite.

The baguette, shut the front door. Baguettes are supposed to be exactly that. One suggestion would be to check out the sweetness of the filling of the oatmeal cookie, it’s way too cloyingly sweet… that baguette made up for it. Will get the baguette again, the cookie, not so much.

Guys, this place is amazing. They had a demonstration at a local Christmas party and the whiskers were selling. I cannot believe it took me 6 months to actually go to the store itself, but along with the whiskers I grabbed a few truffles. HOLY CRAP. I genuinely do not even know how to explain those things other than a soft dark chocolate bit of heaven. You get 3 for like $ 4, or something like that. Worth every penny.

I’ve had Whisk on my bookmark for quite sometime now and finally, I tried it. Immediately upon walking in you are gracefully greeted with a mouth-​watering baked cookie smell. No, seriously!
Clearly I was very excited. I ordered their orange macaron which by the way, HUGE! Almost twice the size of a traditional macaron! I loved the way it tasted and I would totally order it again (duh, worth every penny!) My boyfriend got their chocolate croissant but he didn’t really like it. We got drinks as well but both had such strong grainy flavors. It had so many coffee grains at the bottom and as crazy reference as this may sound, it reminded me of Harry Potter’s grim teacup during his divination lesson (of course this won’t make any sense if you aren’t a potter fan :[).
Anyways, cute café with very minimal décor. A nice place to stop by to grab something quick or even to just enjoy a coffee break. I mean, let’s face it everyone loves shockoe bottom!

What to order:
–Macarons. First they are HUGE. I think they’re the size of my palm. I’ve tried several flavors and I love them all. The flavors change daily so definitely try them out!
–Chocolate chip cookie. I like my cookies crisp and that’s exactly how Whisk makes them. I especially appreciate the huge chocolate chunks throughout the cookie (see pic below)
–Chocolate croissant. Flakey, buttery, amazingly rich.

I do believe that I am in love– actually yes, I am quite sure of it– with this place. Although they do not have decaf espresso (sigh), they make a real good decaf café au lait. Their pastries, cookies, and desserts though are the best treat. I am obsessed with the oatmeal cream pie and the blueberry muffin. I also love the white walls and sweet decorations. But it is even beyond that– I thank them for having wonderfully nice people behind the register and giving a great new café in the downtown area. I know that I am definitely not the only person who loves walking in here on a weekend for some treats or grabbing a coffee before work.
Keep up the great work and, if possible, see if decaf espresso beans may be in the near future?

Wanted to love this place, but my first visit left something to be desired. I popped in on a Saturday morning and ordered three macaroons ($ 3.25/ea) of various flavors to go. The interior was fresh and airy and a positive way to start your morning. My experience with the staff was limited, but everything ran smoothly. I got home with the macaroons, stoked to take a bite. The boyfriend tried his first and couldn’t tell what flavor it was (it was supposed to be blackberry). Just said it tasted like sugar and was way too sweet. He doesn’t love sweets, so I just brushed it off and took a bite of mine. It also just tasted like sugar and had not even a hint of the mango it was supposed to. Texture was good, appearance was beautiful, portion was large, but the recipe needs some work to taste like anything other than solid sugar.
I live a few blocks down and was so looking forward to walking here for morning treats. I’ll be back to try something else, but I hope they improve the macaroon flavors!

I’ve been so excited to try Whisk after seeing all the aesthetically pleasing photos that friends have posted on Instagram. My expectations were very high, and this cute little coffee shop did not disappoint!
As far as I know, Whisk is the only place in RVA to get macarons. Not only are their macarons huge, but they’re well-​executed too — crisp on the outside and chewy on the inside and not stale or crumbly or overbaked.
I tried a bit of my sister’s chocolate croissant and it was buttery and delicious; I could really tell it was homemade. After eating it I think I have a newfound appreciation for croissants.
I was also very pleased with my drink order — a mocha latte with almond milk. I especially loved how the barista gave us each a cute and unique little design with the chocolate syrup!
The interior is bright and very charming. I loved the stained glass windows and how it would cast soft colors onto the tables when the afternoon sunlight was pouring through.
From the coffee, to the pastries, to the interior, Whisk has everything that I could ever want in a café! Will be returning as soon as possible.

This is one of my favorite places to go after I’ve taken my dog on the canal walk. Every time I’ve been here it’s been wonderful. Get their macaroons and the Richmonder sandwich. Also they have tasty ice tea varieties that change often. You can’t go wrong with anything here. Go on the back patio and take in a little peice of RVA heaven.

Upon opening the door, I see this modern esthetic with whites and stainless steel, liked a lot. It smells Devine inside. So I go in with a friend, I have coffee and chocolate croissant and friend had cappuccino and almond croissant. My coffee wasn’t that great, tastes like the beans are over roasted from wherever they get them from, so coffee sucked. But my croissant was warmed and was super delightful, just wish it had a lil bit more chocolate. My friend cappuccino was to be expected. But much better than my coffee. And croissant was good too.
It was clean fairly quiet atmosphere, which I loved. I hate going into places that are so consumed by noise and chatter. I’ll go back in deed, with a good book perhaps and a warm beverage and a different tasty treat.
My three stars are indicative of a mediocre coffee products. Nothing really great there. It’s like coffee and pastries go hand in hand, but in this case the pastries are what make this place great thus far.

Darn it, I was excited about this place because it’s conveniently close to home and I saw such raving reviews that I’ve been looking for a chance to try this for months.
First impression: cute décor, great variety of pastries, macaroons, and traditional coffee choices. Ample space for me and the bf to get a good study session in. The ladies behind the counter were very friendly, upbeat, and answered all my questions I had about the food.
So we started with an iced coffee for the bf and a traditional drip for me. My first impression of my drink was that it was watered down… hm. so I tried some of the iced coffee again, and it tasted like coffee-​infused water. Confused. I usually really like Lamplighter coffee so I was a bit disappointed in that.
As we got out our study materials, I started eyeing the macarons in the case, these crunchy looking, huge macarons, much bigger than I’m used to getting! I had to try one. I was really excited and had asked the cashier for a recommendation on the flavor, deciding between strawberry, wedding cake, and strawberry cheesecake flavors. I was told the strawberry cheesecake has some cream cheese and is a bit more tarty, vs the wedding cake which has a lighter flavor, and strawberry, which she said she loved. SO I decided on the strawberry cheesecake! I take my nicely-​presented plate and walk back to my table and excitedly asked my bf to guess what flavor I got. He took a bite. waited a couple seconds… couldn’t tell. I tried a bite. I wouldn’t have been able to tell either. It was like textured sugar. no flavor at all! More disappointed :/​
After studying an hour or so, we decided to try another pastry, the lemon poppyseed muffin. It was topped with a tarty icing, which I enjoyed. However, the entire rest of the thing tasted just like flour. On a scale of intensity of flavor, the actual muffin was maybe a ²⁄₁₀. I get that you can have subtleties in flavor but this was almost like nothing.
So I’m sorry to say that nothing I have tried here after multiple attempts was impressive. As much as I would love to give this place a great review for atmosphere, décor, ample space, and great service, I think the quality and flavors (or recipes?) of its drinks and pastries should be re-​evaluated. Sorry!

I have a great love affair with Whisk.
Let’s start with the food, because really that’s what you’re here for. This place is hailed for its macarons and they are well worth the ~$ 3.25 price tag. Each macaron is about 2 inches in diameter and packed with amazing flavor varieties. (Also, this isn’t the only place in town to get French macarons but definitely one of the better spots!) The seasonal croissants are also a must for breakfast. Be aware that they do change pretty regularly so you can’t get hooked on a flavor that’s seasonal for long. I’ve also tried both sandwiches (The Parisian and The Richmonder) and both were good for lunch fare. My only wish is that the Richmonder came toasted, but I’m sure if you ask the staff would be more than happy to warm it up for you.
Which brings me to the staff of course. Everyone that works here is so incredibly nice and patient! The first night I came in it was about 20 minutes to closing time and Zack answered all of my questions about macarons and other pastry availability. I’ve also had great experiences with both Mary and Lori helping me out on other visits. If you have questions or suggestions about anything, do not hesitate to ask.
Overall location and interior is wonderful. I’ve never had a problem finding a close spot or at most I had to park on 22^nd and walk down. The inside is so light and minimal that even though the shop has a small eating area it never feels cramped. I really enjoyed having coffee and a croissant at a window seat on a Saturday afternoon because the sun was so nice in that spot.
I could wax poetic about this place for awhile, but I’ll sum it up with this: Go! Go now and don’t be afraid to go right before closing. The cabinet is always stocked with something that’s going to keep you coming back for more.

Great space, great lighting, outstanding customer service, presentation is very pleasing, menu includes food sandwiches as well as baked good which differentiates it from local bakeries and there is this: the prices are way too cheap but don’t tell them!
They’ve got free WiFi which got me to visit them. Turns out there were 3 others inside eating, drinking and using the wifi as well. Total no brainer

I love the variety of little bakeries popping up in the churchill area. Globehooper which was the coffe shop /​café that whisk took over and a place I frequented often. I was very excited to check this place out and see what tasty selections they had to offer .
I am always looking for a café/​coffee shop where I get get good grubs as well as sit and get some work done. Whisk had a great outside patio but on the inside it seemed more like a grab and go since they not really alot of seating inside. Lauri T. was right as far as the wifi situation and I didnt see that a whole lot of outlets
either.
Down to the goods, I got two croissants one chocolate and one plain and a macaroon (which was HUGE). I wanted to check out the coffee selection but it was too late in the afternoon so thats definitely on my list to try next time. The croissants seemed kinda small but they were really flaky which was good, and the chocolate was the perfect amout of sweetness. Compared to sub rosas crossants it was ehh. They do have a good selecrion and flavors available especially in the muffin crossant department and always rotating. They also sell baguettes and on that particular day they did feature a apple tart thing but I am not sure if you could get it by the slice .
Overall I would give whisk another chance. I like the various selection and seasonal flavors. I even saw some items that I havent heard of before but the staff are friendly and helpful. On a nice afternoon I could definitely see myself siting on the quite patio and enjoying a book but not till it gets nice outside again. Price point seemed just a little high for your average treat but not by much. The macroons are definitely a great price for the size you get.

Out for an adventure in the «flood zone» area of RVA and you have a sweet craving? Look no further than the newest addition to the downtown area than Whisk. Nestled right on Main Street, this newbie is giving the other local bakeries a run for their money!
For my birthday I decided to forgo an overly sweet dessert at my party simply because I did not want any typical store bought iced monstrosity. As someone who does not like processed icings and overly-​chemical cakes, I decided to skip it. However, the day after my birthday I felt I still wanted a sweet treat to have. Wandering around town, I stumbled upon Whisk.
I loved their renovation of the older space with its clean lines and beautiful wooden door. The simple art and seating are a perfect fill for this quaint and dainty bakery. Boasting local coffee from Lamplighter Roasting Co., the sweet aroma fills your nose the moment you walk in. They create their own sweet masterpieces for all to enjoy and I was excited to sample all they had available. I walked right in, hoping to find something to satisfy my sweet tooth. The glass case displayed various sweets from macaroons, danishes, scones and even various flavored pies. Each guests had their simple conversations over sweet treats, as Whisk does not provide Wi-​Fi — a perfect place for the opportunity to catch up with friends without media distractions.
After narrowing my choices down to two, I finally selected the chocolate caramel walnut pie, perfect for savoring with a cup of slow drip Lamplighter Coffee. Sitting down by the front window, I savored my delectable pie while watching locals walk dogs and bike to their next destination. I was very pleased with my selection Whisk had. The pie, I had expected to be overly sweetened, was the right amount of sweet and savory. The caramel was drizzled atop had the slightest salty and creamy texture you hope for and the chocolate was thick like custard but firm to hold each walnut piece together. The crust was flaky and firm, with a light buttery taste. It was everything I had wanted.
As I left, I realized Richmond is slowing becoming a mecca metropolis for foodies of all walks and tastes. Whisk has proven that it has staying power to become a favorite amongst locals and out-​of-​towners alike.

An absolute delight. Trying to choose a baked good from the case for breakfast was a gut-​wrenching experience, and only my realization that an excess of breakfast would probably interfere with my imminent sleep [I work nights, it was bedtime], prevented me from ordering about seven different things. My ultimate choice was a savory croissant filled with sun-​dried tomato goat cheese, which I paired with hot chocolate to better effect than you might suppose. The pastry itself is delectably flaky [careful not to dribble crumbs on your sweater], good both hot and cool if you are inclined to buy multiples and save things for later. The hot cocoa was steamed milk with dark drinking chocolate whisked in, barely sweet [a good thing for me, but perhaps in need of a touch more sugar for others] and absolutely the best thing ever on a chilly morning.
The staff is happy and helpful, and will gladly converse [in addition to excellent explanations of the food options and their recommendations] while working, if they can manage [the pair assembling macarons was understandably quiet in concentration]. Atmosphere-​wise, it is light and airy without being too industrially crisp, and the stained glass accents are pleasantly cheerful.
Truly, my only possible complaint is the parking, which is kinda poop.
