The Briar Patch is Northern California’s premier tobacconist carrying Sacramento’s broadest selection of cigars.

Founded in 1983, we have the finest name brands in cigars, pipes, pipe tobaccos, lighters and other accessories. Some of the fine brands we carry include: Davidoff, Ashton, Arturo Fuente, Brick House, Don Pipin Garcia, Diamond Crown, Padron, Paul Garmarian, Hammer & Sickle, Cohiba, Partagas, Iconic, Camacho, Fratello, Atabey, Byron, La Aroma de Cuba, La Gloria Cubana, CAO, Griffin, La Aurora, Cuesta Rey, Perdomo, Punch, Dunhill, AVO, Ashton, Hoyo de Monterrey, Aging Room, Zino and many others.

We stock nearly 100 bulk tobaccos, many of which are our own blends. The Briar Patch is an Authorized Alfred Dunhill dealer and a Davidoff Appointed Merchant. We are also an authorized dealer for ST Dupont and Rosenthal.

Our knowledgeable employees are known for their friendliness and desire to provide the highest level of service in our industry. We also have a Diamond Crown Smoking lounge where members can enjoy HDTV, piano, a game table, wifi, soft drinks, and a tobacco friendly atmosphere. Each membership level provides additional benefits. The Diamond Crown Lounges are also available for private parties.

History

Established in 1983.

The Briar Patch was founded in 1983 at Arden Fair. When Arden Fair Mall was remodeled the Briar Patch moved upstairs in the mall near Sears. Ron and Jeri Michelson purchased the Briar Patch in 2002. With a passion for cigars it was the perfect next step for Ron and Jeri. The Loehmann’s Plaza location was opened in August 2009. With over 30 years of success we look forward to many more.

Business Owner

Ron grew up in Phoenix, Arizona. He attended Northern Arizona University, graduating with a degree in Business Management in 1970.

For most of his career, Ron worked in the computer software industry in positions ranging from software development to sales and sales management. After helping build two dot com start-​ups in Silicon Valley, Ron decided it was time to move to a lower stress environment. He, his wife Jeri and daughter Lauren moved to Sacramento in 2001, purchasing the Briar Patch in early 2002.

Ron has a collection of about 70 pipes. His favorites include several Dunhills, Jouras, Formers and a couple of Castellos. He smokes mainly aromatic tobaccos. Ron’s favorite cigar is the Davidoff Special T. He hopes you have such a wonderful experience that you keep coming back.

Great selection of pipes. Fantastic service! Sean and Mathew are really knowledgeable about pipes and tobacco. Sean spent a good amount of time showing me the various brands of tobacco and explained the differences without being condescending to a newbie. Mathew helped me to pick a good pipe, showed me how to pack it correctly and invited me to smoke it there. Absolutely fantastic service… will definitely be buying more products there.

Clean place and great staff but parking is a challenge in this busy outdoor shopping center. In fact, parking is the ONLY thing I don’t like about going to the Briar Patch. This place is great with a large smoke lounge and a big screen TV surrounded by comfortable chairs. I’m actually amazed at how clean they keep it. My favorite is the black Virginian (the second-​most expensive at $ 10/​oz but totally worth it). They have a full collection of pipes, house blends, pouched and tin tobacco. If you’re a cigar fan, you’ll love their private room off the main floor that is just full of cigars. The staff is awesome and very helpful. You want to try something new? They’ll give you a pipeful and let you sample anything in a jar. Can’t beat this place.

This shop has a wonderful selection of cigars and other product, including cigar boxes and handcrafted pipes. There were also some excellent variety gift packages that are perfect for gift-​buyers who aren’t familiar with cigars.
I would give 5 stars if not for the way I was treated. I was buying cigars for a few friends and myself to smoke that night. One friend isn’t a smoker so I bought him a cheap flavored one. The man ringing me up said something like «I assume this one is yours,» pointing to the cheap one and rolling his eyes, insinuating that a woman wouldn’t want a good cigar or wouldn’t know the difference. (mine was actually a really nice Monte cristo that I loved)
While I enjoyed the shop very much, I’d rather spend my money where women aren’t treated as ignorant inferiors.

I purchased a couple pipes from them a few years ago from them the Briar was looking kind of old they polished both pipes for no charge I also sampled a couple of their tobacco’s, aromatics for the most part after going there twice the staff was very courteous and very knowledgeable I also tried an English tobacco for the very first time the staff was very helpful in explaining about the different tastes Which helped me decide if I wanted to switch from an aromatic to English brand. I also purchased my favorite cigar which was nice and moist and full of flavor along with several brands of pipe tobacco. I never had a problem with the staff. I’ll always go back it’s nice place to go for a good smoke and good staff courtesy just the fact that he polished my pipes with no problem and no charge save me from trying to figure out how to polish them without hurting the Briar Wood. One of the few places left that you can smoke in an establishment left without being told I can’t smoke. Very relaxing.

This is a real tobacconist, which is a rare find these days. If you’re looking for funny flower supplies, you won’t find it here. I’m a pipe smoker and enjoy this place a lot. I live over an hour away, but it’s worth the drive! I purchased a Peterson Dracula and some Esoterica tobaccos the other day on my way down south, and am looking forward to my trip home so I can stop back by and smoke a pipe or two and shoot the breeze. I can’t wait to try the peanut butter blend. Thank you Briar Patch.

I frequent this establishment often. The nice thing about it is the customer service is very personal in fact most of the older employees know me by name. There humidor is exceptionally bigger then when they were at Arden fair mall. I enjoy their wide selection of cigars and their wide range of prices. If you are cigar connoisseur it’s a nice place to sit and smoke and enjoy trying different cigars. They have a bar where you can sit and smoke and talk with the employees or very comfortable lounge and both have a flatscreen televisions homey environment. Although I’ve quit smoking I still go in there to purchase a guy from my collection. I would definitely recommend this establishment to a friend who smoke cigars or pipes.

A very handsome shop located in Loehmann’s Plaza. There’s a sweet, subtle aroma of good cigars as you enter. I went in to get accessories for my vaporizer (the device that got me out of a 53 year cigarette habit), and received terrific, friendly help from Blake. Briar Patch provides good, old fashion excellence and service.

This is my go-​to for anything tobacco related. I especially like speaking to the mature guy with the Rolex, I wish I could remember his name, but he’s great. He makes excellent recommendations and he knows his stuff. I’m a female cigar/​pipe smoker and I’ve never been treated any different than the male patrons, which is great! I’ve been to other shops and the guys are just pigs. (Not going to call them out to keep it fair)
Ladies if you’re shopping for yourselves or significant others I recommend this place!

My husband likes this place, I’ve gone in with him several times and the staff have always been decent. Never overly friendly, but I don’t expect them to go out of their way for a little blonde, who very obviously has no intention nor interested in purchasing anything for myself.
Well, today the young man behind the counter was a little less than professional. He was short, seemed annoyed and didn’t even look up at us when he spoke to us. My husband asked him if he would clean his pipe and that he wood like to purchase some tobacco. His response was «clean it how??» I believe he may have meant «how would you like your pipe cleaned?» Either way I walked out. He then proceeded to tell my husband to get the tobacco he wished to purchase as he watched the tv.
He husband purchased his tobacco and that was that. I won’t go back, but I really have no need to. If I choose to purchase these sorts of things for my husband in the future, I’ll go elsewhere.

These are some decent chaps. Very nice laid back shop. I usually pick up the River City tobacco, which is similar to what the Tinder Box used to sell as «Norse Gold», which is Virginia, burley and flue cured dark leaf, and is great. I also pick up an occasional cigar and the selection is very decent. The guys working there are super-​friendly and it is a very enjoyable place to kill some time. They also have events — I went to a cigar testing event there and it was super fun. Their smoker’s lounge is very laid-​back. Smooth stuff. Nice place.

This place is a fantastic place for all you cigar and pipe smoking needs. Friendly and knowledgeable staff.
I have purchased 3 pipes from them and countless cigars. I also purchased my personal humidor from them and have a cigar locker at the shop.
They always have events going on, i.e. Charity golf tournament and cigar dinners. This location has a massive humidor with a fantastic selection of cigars. The staff are always willing to help you pick out whatever you need. They also have a very nice cigar lounge (small fee for non members) with comfy chairs and big screen HDTV.
I’ve never had a bad experience at this shop, the continue to impress me on a daily basis.
