Business Owner

After having served in the United States Navy, Gene received a degree in criminal justice and a Bachelors degree in sociology. After college he moved to California, where he began his career in the jewelry industry. While working in the jewelry trade, he continued his formal studies and became a Graduate Gemologist with the Gemological Institue of America (GIA).

In 1990, Gene and his partners founded a high line super store, featuring an every day lowest pricing structure. In 1996 Gene also created and opened the Diamond & Gold Vault Brokerage in Sacramento. In 2009 Gene made the decision to take over Diamond & Gold Vault, making the brokerage his sole focus.

He designed Diamond & Gold Vault to combine current technology, reduced overhead, direct trade buying, and to provide clients with the lowest possible pricing on fine jewelry.

As an owner and gemologist, Gene’s priority continues to be working directly with clients and providing qualified knowledge about diamonds & jewelry

I came to this store because of their good reviews. What is good about them is, they have GIA specialist on-​site (father of Brandon) who knows diamonds and are willing to educate me.
What they did wrong was:
1. I first emailed Brandon to remind him to search diamonds for me, he didn’t reply. Two days later, I called them, Eric picked up the phone and told me to email him and he would follow up. But he didn’t reply my email. Another two days later, Brandon emailed me back. Their email response is too slow. Although they said they can do custom ring design in 3 weeks, I can’t see how it happens with such a slow email response.
2. Brandon’s dad, the GIA specialist, told me that GIA has a very strict standard, but he sometime see EGL graded even stricter than GIA and encouraged me to consider EGL. But the truth is actually the opposite. EGL always grades higher with lax grading system. They hope customers would buy EGL so that they can charge customers premium price for a not-​so-​great diamond

Went to the Diamond and Gold Vault after visiting several different jewelry places to do my due diligence and compare. There is a marked difference in price, service and quality between the Diamond and Gold Vault and all other jewelers! I have now bought three one of a kind pieces made specifically for me and I could not have had a better experience in service and product delivery. Gene, Sandy, and Brandon are all absolutely fabulous and top notch! I went in and explained to Gene what I wanted, he then had the piece designed via computer image, had a wax model built, and finally delivered a high end one of a kind show stopper that put a big smile on my face. Take my word for it, go see Gene and the team, you won’t be sorry. I am now a faithful customer for life.

Every piece of jewelry I’ve purchased for my wife has been through the Diamond & Gold Vault. And to celebrate our 10-​year anniversary, I wanted to gift her a new pair of diamond earrings. Using our existing pair as a reference, Sandy and Gene acquired the perfect set for my wife to try on. She loves them!

Wanted to surprise my wife by replacing the diamond in her wedding ring… it was from a few decades ago and I really thought she would love it, although she had never mentioned it before. I made an appointment with Ed. He was friendly and relaxed. Made me feel comfortable and then proceeded to ask me questions about what I wanted to do. Brought out a few diamonds that might meet my needs. After looking at the setting and educating me about each stone, he suggested the ones that were a slightly smaller in size as they were better suited to the existing setting and then with the help of staff, we all agreed on a really nice one that was well within my budget. The ring turned out perfect and my wife absolutely loved it. Couldn’t have asked for a better experience selecting a loose diamond. Ed and his staff a great bunch of people, I absolutely will recommend them to anyone that is looking for great service and fair prices. Much preferred over those chain stores, etc. Call Ed!

I really, really wanted to give nothing but a shining review… as shiny as the ring I hoped for. I truly did. However, it seems I am without ring and without a positive review. We met with Ed when we first started our ring search back in September. He was polite, knowledgeable and seemed like he could get the job done. After several additional weeks of shopping to determine what exactly we wanted, we decided Ed was the perfect guy to create our dream ring.
After his initial standard follow-​up email to our meeting, we hadn’t heard from him, but I reached out to him via email with pictures and ideas of everything we now knew we wanted. This is the point in which the service significantly decreased. His responses came very, very slowly (sometimes several weeks between my emails and his responses) and were lacking any real details.
I had wanted a pretty simple ring, but with a cushion cut black diamond center, and after all the pics and details I gave him, he just said he would look for the diamond and then he seemed to just disappear. I never got updates from him unless I emailed him after weeks would pass without any communication. He would say he was still looking for the black diamond and that was it.
I had finally asked about the CAD drawing in early October after weeks silence. He said he hoped to have it on the 7th, I had to email for it again on the 14th and he finally sent one over on the 21st. I emailed back my changes that were desired and then he disappeared yet again. Every time I would send a friendly email to check in on the status of the black diamond he would eventually get back to me and just say he was still looking. And that was it. No more updates of the drawing or anything.
So flash forward over 3 months later with no ring, no CAD drawing, no diamond and no response from Ed in a month, I send yet another email inquiring about the status and a possible time-​frame since I had not been given one at this point and we were getting anxious. He simply responds and says he can’t find the diamond and thanks for the opportunity to serve.
What? Did I just get fired as a customer? What happened? Because he can’t delivery a cushion cut? Gee, I really wish I had known that back in September! Or at some point along the way these last 3 – 4 months! I know the budget for my ring wasn’t a lot, but I really feel discarded after being drug along for several months.
I wasn’t asking for all that much. Yes I wanted a ring and yes I would have liked to be kept in the loop more of what the hell was going on, but now I’m even more frustrated with this process than I was before we found Ed! It’s just not the level of service we expected from a 5-​star business, and we are extremely disappointed :(

My fiancé and I found this place when we were looking at styles of engagement rings so that he knew what I like before he proposed. When we went in together, they were very helpful and super patient with me while I looked through all of their styles and critiqued all of the small details of the rings. I never once felt rushed, and after hearing a little bit about what I liked and didn’t like about some of their samples, they were able to find the exact ring I was hoping for. My fiancé handled everything after that, and went without me a few times to make payments, drop of the center diamond that we bought separately, etc. From what I hear, he had a good experience those times too. The only problem he had was that the manufacturer of the ring wasn’t willing to split up the ring set-​if he bought the engagement ring, he had to buy the wedding band with it. This wasn’t Diamond & Gold Vault’s fault, but it was kind of inconvenient because it meant spending quite a bit more than he was planning to at that point. Because of that inconvenience, Diamond and Gold Vault waived some fees for the engagement ring, like the resizing fee and the diamond setting fee, so that was nice of them.
Now that we’re engaged and planning our wedding, we’ve started shopping for his wedding band, and this was the first stop we made. Again, the salesman who worked with us (same young guy that helped us before; I think he’s the owner’s son) was really patient, had a lot of helpful knowledge and insight, and was never pushy at all. Before I left, the lady at the front desk reminded me that I get my ring cleaned for free since it had been purchased there, so they did that for me real quick and it came back to me sparklier than ever! That was a nice surprise; I had forgotten that free cleanings were a perk of purchasing your jewelry here.
One thing I want to mention-​to get into the store, you need to ring a doorbell and they buzz the door for you to enter. Both times I’ve gone I’ve failed miserably at this process and somehow seem to block the door from unlocking and then they have to personally walk to the door to let us in. This is solely a reflection on me, I’m just really uncoordinated and awkward, and I feel embarrassed that I can’t figure out how to get through a door. If you’re the same way, be warned.

I could not have been happier with the experience and customer service that Gene and the Diamond and Gold Vault crew provided. Clueless about jewelry, I wandered into the Diamond and Gold Vault and inquired about purchasing an engagement ring. Gene (the Gemologist) sat me down and walked me through the ins and outs of the process and catered to my preferences and budget. In other words, he essentially became my Jewelry Yoda.

My (now) fiancé went through Diamond & Gold Vault for my custom engagement ring and from the stories he’s told me, we highly recommend them.
Ed was on time with every estimated target date for the delivery of diamonds to view, ring molds, adjustments, etc.
I took my ring in on Tuesday to get it re-​sized and by Thursday morning I’ve already heard from Ed that my ring is ready for pick up!
Highly recommended and I will be sure to tell friends and family. Great service, and they made my fiances experience less stressful.

My (now) fiancé and I visited Diamond & Gold Vault last February after deciding that we wanted to design a custom ring. We wanted a ring that was unique and vintage-​y looking, and were hoping to have a pleasant experience shopping for the ring together. Fortunately, we found just those things at Diamond & Gold Vault.
Ed met with us and reviewed the custom design we had been considering. After explaining how he would be able to design the ring (#1) for us, he showed us a similar custom ring (#2) that another client had ordered but ultimately rejected. Ed was up-​front and explained that we’d be able to get more diamond for our buck with ring #2 than with the ring we were hoping to design (#1). To be honest, the moment I put ring #2 on my finger, I was sold, but Ed went ahead and had his designer put together pictures and specs for the custom ring. After evaluating the two, we ultimately decided to go with the gorgeous custom ring (#2) that Ed had showed us during our initial visit. Not only did he encourage us look at other stores and did not pressure us at all, but Ed also made sure to give us the ring for a great price within our budget.
Best of all, when my fiancé proposed with the ring 6 months later, it looked even better than I remembered it being. Even more, we had the ring appraised for a much higher price at another jewelry store, and I get compliments on the unique design frequently. I loved my experience at Diamond & Gold Vault and continue to enjoy visiting when I get my ring cleaned (the young man at the front desk is extremely polite and friendly).

The Diamond & Gold Vault is where everybody should go when they want outstanding customer service, a staff that exceeds customer expectations, and the highest quality products. I just purchased an engagement ring and was shocked at how informative and helpful Ed Hattery was. He was quick to respond to all my calls, emails, and questions. He wasn’t pushy; I never got the feeling that he was trying to sell me on something. Buying an engagement ring is a bit stressful, but Ed made it so smooth and easy.
The quality of service and products is unlike any other place. I no longer live near enough to visit the store in person, but it wasn’t necessary, I am so happy with my purchase; I will definitely do more business the Diamond and Gold Vault

I am so glad I found this place and can’t speak highly enough of the quality product you will get, not to mention the excellent customer service. My fiancé and I created a custom ring using his grandmother’s diamonds in addition to a center stone we purchased from Ed.
Also, I find their trade-​in policy to be very fair. We were not only pleasantly surprised at the amount given to us for trading in another ring, but there was no catch-​22. There is no need to brace yourself for the fine print!
We had such a positive experience, I can’t wait to come back to order our wedding bands!

Diamond and Gold Vault created my custom wedding band and it was one of the best experiences I had while planning my wedding, if not one of the best EVER.
I originally went in to have my engagement ring sized and was so impressed by the professionalism and customer service that they became my first choice for creating my custom band. I worked with Ed whose communication was very prompt and courteous. He was involved in the entire process from the initial design through the various revisions all the way through the final delivery and it was simply flawless. Even when I literally SHATTERED the wax mold when trying it on (sorry again!), Ed didn’t bat an eyelash. He just laughed and assured me everything would be fine… and it was!
Beyond the customer service, the quality of their work is top notch. Everything about D&GV made me feel at ease and confident that I made the right decision. I will definitely use them for all my jewelry needs in future!

My fiancée and I loved the fact that we didn’t have to sacrifice on the four C’s and Gene and Ed helped us to find the perfect engagement ring. I strongly encourage anyone looking for a wedding stone to check out Diamond Vault. You will discover that what you get in a typical run of the mill jewelry store will never compare to what you get from Diamond & Gold Vault. (And we all know those big name chain jewelry stores I am referring to). I can’t stress enough that if you want high quality jewelry then go here, don’t go to the chains. You will save soooo much money and get sooo much more!
We will positively go back in the future for our jewelry needs. We lucked out and found Diamond & Gold Vault online one night and thank God we did because we ended up saving a lot of mula and got exactly what we wanted in the price range we wanted and all without the inflation and haggling that come along with big jewelry store fronts. Diamond&Gold Vault is almost like a mini jewelry exchange right here in Sac. {I grew up in L.A. and the only times we ever bought diamonds, gold or any precious stones were from the jewelry echange and everyone knows that you’re always going to get the best value at a jewelry or diamond exchange.} So, long story short, we had an absolutely great experience with Gene in his quick Gem Education crash course and then we had an even greater experience with Ed picking out the perfect stone and the perfect setting.

My husband and I purchased our wedding rings as well as my engagement ring here. We have had the best experience with the staff at this shop. Everyone is friendly and knowledgeable. Gene and Ricky in particular always take great care of us. We worked with Gene to custom-​design by husband’s wedding ring, and it turned out absolutely beautifully.
The prices here are very good for high quality jewelry as well. I will definitely come back, and I would recommend it to anyone who is in the market for not only wedding/​engagement rings but any fine jewelry as they have an excellent selection of earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and non-​wedding rings. And they can order or custom-​design just about anything you could want.
Insider tip: I suggest making an appointment on Saturdays since it gets busy.

We worked with Gene to create a custom ring at Diamond and Gold Vault. I had this vision of what I wanted, a 2+ carat pear shape in a halo setting but I couldn’t find it at local jewelry stores or anywhere other then online and there was no way I was about to order a diamond and a setting online.
I started corresponding with Gene through email of what I was looking for an we talked about what my options were. I told him a budget and he went to work to find me the perfect diamond. He also had me come in to view some similar diamonds to compare and explain the color, clarity, cut and carat size (the 4 c’s) to make sure I understood and was educated about diamonds. He showed me a diamond and it looked great, very sparkly and clear, it was beautiful so he asked if he found something like that, would I be happy? I said yes and he went to work finding something within my budget that was comparable to that diamond. When he found something that he felt suited my requirements he called me down again to view it and to my surprise it was even better looking then the diamond he had shown me before, but this one was in my price range!
After purchasing the loose diamond we started the process for custom setting design. I wanted to be able to wear my solitaire however so Gene had it set in a white gold solitaire setting so i could wear it around while the custom setting was being designed (super awesome of him!) I brought in a picture that I had found on the internet of the exact setting I wanted made by a designer jewelry company and Diamond and Gold Vault was able to duplicate it for me for about half of the actual price it would have cost had I ordered it from the actual designer company!
The quality and the craftsmanship of my ring is exquisite! I am so happy we did our research and decided to go with Diamond and Gold Vault, they are able to work closely with you and your budget to get you the best diamond and ring setting for the best possible price. They really care about your happiness, listen to what you want and then do their best to go beyond your expectations to get you an amazing piece of jewelry.
