Icing On The Cupcake

I don’t know if it’s because today was their last day of operation but their chocolate peppermint and chocolate macaron cupcakes were really good and super moist and light. I’ve had their cupcakes before and thought they were ok because they were really sweet and kinda dense and dry. But today’s was one of the best cupcakes I’ve had in a while.
I’m really going to miss the selection they had and the creativity of the flavors and how pretty the cupcakes are.

Came in for my last neopolitan and choco mint cupcakes. I will sincerely miss you Icing. Hopefully you will find a way to come back to us sooner than later.

I’ve tasted all the other local cupcakeries, and no one comes close to Icing on the Cupcake. They don’t bake ahead and refrigerate like their competitors, they bake them fresh everyday. I appreciate that they don’t have 40 different flavors of cupcakes everyday that just sit out. The quality and service is superb. My favorite is the Chocolate Mint and my boyfriend loves their Snickerdoodle, which has incredible frosting but is a speciality cupcake so it’s only available on certain days. Anytime we have something to celebrate we get cupcakes from here.
I recently heard that they’re closing, which means I’m done eating cupcakes because I only like theirs. If it is true I hope they adjust their business model and open up again. They will always have my business.

Fellow cupcake-​obsessed Unilocalers spread the word that this location was sadly closing, so I made a point to stop in to sample their wares while I still could. I’ve also heard they have multiple locations and aren’t ALL closing, so maybe they will get a chance to reopen elsewhere? For the truly loyal fans, there is hope.
We stopped in on a Sunday afternoon, and while they weren’t packed, there was a steady of stream of guests popping in for a sweet treat. The shop itself is very cute inside, and the cupcakes are all visible for you to choose. Their design is beautiful, very colorful and tempting. We opted for the chocolate macaroon, maple bacon, chocolate mint and peanut butter & jelly. The total came out to $ 11, a little steep perhaps but a fair price to me for gorgeous handcrafted cakery.
All cupcakes were tasty treats, but this place isn’t quite on par with other cupcake shops I’ve tried (in my humble opinion). Part of what makes a great cupcake is finding the balance between frosting and cake, in ratio but also in sweetness and flavor so that one doesn’t overshadow the other. While portions are good, their frostings are exceedingly sweet for my palate. I honestly have no idea what the cake in the maple bacon cupcake tasted like. The sweet maple flavor of the buttercream was kind of amazing in its power, but I could taste literally nothing else. A better balance was struck with the chocolate mint — instead of being overpoweringly sweet, the minty frosting had an almost refreshing quality, and paired up nicely with the moist chocolate cake. Somewhere between the two was the PB&J — again, powerful and delicious peanut butter frosting, but the cake and jelly couldn’t begin to compete.
Luckily, cupcakes are plentiful and loved by just about everyone, so I hope the other locations continue to thrive and find more and more sugary sweet fans!

Since I can make cupcakes then i dont really care about others but here is why i rated it 5 stars.
I was recommended by one of my college professor and surprised for how good the cupcakes here are.
The shop was small with simple decoration. This could make people think that they are not popular or their cupcakes are mediocre. Well, thats why they say dont judge a book by its cover.
Their cupcakes are bombs. Every single type are unbelievably amazing (could put me to shame for the cupcakes i can make). My favorite is the macaroon cupcake and the coconut. The cupcakes are about $ 2.50 but in good size. If you buy more than 20 they would give you different price.
They do cater. Thats perfect for any party. I will recommend this place forsho.

Their cupcakes are so good. I love their frostings. Their December flavor is gingerbread and it was absolutely amazing! I’ve liked every flavor I’ve tried, but this was my favorite so far. Second favorite is the chocolate chip cookie cupcake. Brownies and bars are also good. Yum!

The peanut butter & jelly cupcake tasted like a fluffy, sweet, rich PB&J sandwich. Not a flavor I would normally want, but MAN, sure glad I chose it! I love that they used raspberry jelly; it was the same kind you’d find in the middle of a raspberry jelly donut. My only gripe was that they appear to use a lot of artificial colors in their cupcakes, which kind of turns me off. Granted, I also bought a (yet-​to-​be eaten) red velvet, but something about neon frosting grosses me out a little. The fluorescent frosting looks too much like the topping of a bad cupcake from a grocery store chain like Safeway, although I’m sure they all taste as awesome as the PB&J I just ate.
Never really go to Sacramento, but if I return, I’ll stop by this place.

I had the raspberry lemonade, the pumpkin, and the red velvet cupcakes. All of them were delicious, moist cake, and smooth and creamy frosting. Every cupcake here is fantastic.

Incredibly fluffy and delicious cupcake! I came here after work at Safeway purely on a whim — I’m determined to check out all the baked goods Sac has to offer — and I’m so glad I did! They were semi-​close to closing time so a lot of the shelves were empty, but a snickerdoodle cupcake caught my eye and my stomach. They also had this really cute neapolitan one that I was seriously debating about for a good while.
Oh, I didn’t realize this before I came but checking in on Foursquare gets you a free cupcake if it’s your first time there! SCORE! The employees were super nice about it and I’m going to bring my roomie back here to get her own fix next week.
There’s a mini mini mini parking lot in front which sucks and is super cramped but there’s always street parking nearby.

Very clean store. Incredibly polite people behind the counter who are always smiling and willing to help.
And the cupcakes… wow!
They do have minis, but the larger ones are delicious. They are fresh, yummy, and the flavors are amazing.
The Lemon-​raspberry one just about destroyed my pancreas, but it made my mouth so happy!
Red velvet is out of this world.
Yes, there’s parking. Lots of parking. I’ve purchased a few dozen from these folks throughout the year as gifts, and they have always disappeared quickly.

Whilst in Sacramento Hubby and I am came here twice in one weekend! Ok, so the second visit was just for our free Cupcake but still. They were that good we will return when we’re next in the area.
The Cupcakes here are $ 2.75 for their every day variety and $ 3 for the flavor of the month. They are also pretty big with a lot of frosting but it’s not overly sweet sickly frosting and the flavors and textures work really well together. If you want something a little smaller Baby Bites are $ 13.50 for a dozen and pre boxed.
* Tropical Dream ($ 3) (
) — This is this months flavor of the month. Banana, Coconut and Pineapple Cake with Coconut Cream Cheese Frosting. So so good! This was mine and Hubby’s favorite. The cake was moist and the frosting creamy. If you get just one cupcake this month make sure it’s this one. 4.5÷5
Hubby actually pointed out the cake part is identical to my own recipe Banana Bread which is probably why we enjoyed it so much.

These are both filled cupcakes. The Lemon with Lemon Curd (

) As you can see the filling is plentiful. Again the cakes were very moist and although the Lemon had so much Lemon flavoring going on (cupcake, frosting AND filling) I didn’t find it to be overpowered. 3.5÷5

These are both Chocolate cake which neither Hubby or I were all that keen on as the Chocolate flavor tasted a lot like Hershey’s and neither of us are a fan. The frosting however was good. The Mint was strong yet not like we had just eaten half a tube of toothpaste (too many cupcake places somehow manage to make it feel like you have!) and the Macaroon was Vanilla frosting with flaked Coconut on top — light flavor with a nice chewy texture.
I have to give them bonus points for not making the cake in these too dry. In my experience of buying chocolate cupcakes its that they often do come out very dry and dense, probably something to do with the Cocoa powder used. Icing On The Cupcake seem to one of the better producers of Chocolate cakes. ³⁄₅

Icing on the Cupcake is my favorite local, chain cupcake store. I find their cupcakes to be the most consistent, delicious and their employees the most friendly. They often have deals on Groupon which makes the indulgence very affordable and their various locations seem to be in very convienent places to just run in and make a purchase and be on the road again.
In this instance I had a sick child for the last four days who ended up needing to go to the ER. Getting a three year old to cooperate with breathing treatments, chest x-​rays and all the other poking and prodding especially while they feel so bad, made me proud of how good he did. We had a follow-​up doctor appointment once he was feeling better and so afterwards I told him he could pick out some cupcakes. I would normally just let him pick one, but I had a Groupon for six so we picked a supply for the whole family. We got three chocolate chocolate, a red velvet, a pumpkin and a chocolate chip.
So far we have only tried the chocolate chocolate and the chocolate chip. The cake and chips on the chocolate chip were delicious, moist cake and the chips had good chocolate flavor and melting point. The frosting was cream cheese, however and I really prefer cream cheese frosting on fruit based cakes (like pumpkin). The chocolate chocolate is my favorite from IOTC, the frosting is a buttercream, not too sweet with good rich chocolate flavor and the cake is also moist and flavorful.

I’ve never been a cake/​cupcake/​baked goods fan, but these are REALLY REALLY good! I’m truly surprised how moist they are and the buttercream is delicious!

Because I have never been to the location or ordered it myself, I’m only giving it 4 stars. I have seen how pretty they look and tasted the vanilla/​chocolate cupcake though for a friend’s birthday; It was heaven in my mouth. I wasn’t sure what to expect since I’m not really a huge sweets fan and am content with homemade baked goods instead of spending that extra money at a bakery, but this spot sold me. I love red velvet anything, so that’s what I’m looking forward to try next.

This was our first visit here and I have to say this is now our favorite cupcake shop in Sacramento. Located off of Alhambra in midtown the shop is cute and clean across the street from Jamba Juice. All of the cupcakes were gorgeous and they had several free samples on the counter top to test out. We had the following:
Pink cupcake: chocolate cake with cream cheese icing, moist and delicious
Red Velvet: moist and delicious
Triple Chocolate with chocolate filling: these was too sweet for us, but extreme chocolate lovers would enjoy this moist sweet cake
Carrot Cake: OMG one of the best ever, fresh raisins, super moist cake and wonderful icing
Berry Pie: every friday they make a different pie cupcake, this was basically a delicious black berry mini pie in a cupcake wrapper
There were at least 6 – 8 more cupcakes and we are definately going back to try them all!

I’ve tried a few varieties of cupcakes from this place. These cupcakes have a fun, unique appearance to them, and there are a variety of flavors to choose from. For my palette, however, the frosting is much too sweet. Also, most of the varieties are described as using «buttercream» frosting but the taste was devoid of any buttery flavor.
If the cupcakes were a lower price, I would consider them average. At their price premium, however, I can’t justify giving them three stars. Ettore’s or Esther’s both offer a much more balanced flavor profile in a cupcake.

This is what I’ve tried over several visits:
Beehive, Blueberry cheesecake, Carrot cake, Mint chocolate chip, Death by chocolate, PB&J, Cookies n Cream, Pineapple rightside up, Pumpkin, Snickerdoodle, Snowball
Pros: Pretty décor (the space and cupcakes), good portion size vs. price, free cupcake if you reuse their box
Cons: Dry cupcakes, frosting was too much and too sweet, nothing special — almost all cupcakes had no filling or texture, heavy/​dense cake
The only one I would say was superr good was the Death by Chocolate. It had melted chocolate inside and was like eating a moist molten lava cake. Mmmm… Blueberry cheesecake was good b/​c it had filling, but the other cupcakes were just cake and icing. Meh~
All I can say is. I’m still searching for THE cupcake spot.

This place was recommended to me by fellow Unilocalers and my wife and i visited today. First let me start by saying we have been watching food network’s Cupcake wars and we started craving cupcakes. Saturday before anyone responded to my cupcake post on Unilocal,we went to cupcake craving. I had been there before and knew where it was. It was ok. Nothing too special… Last night I saw so many recommendation to try this place. Sunday we went to give it a try and man were we happy!
They sampled us the red velvet and maple cupcake and they were AMAZING! There were so many options. I went with the Coconut Macaroon and my wife went with the Boston Crème. They were both very good. I loved the filling in the boston crème. They were both so moist and delicious.
On top of that, the employees were very nice and helpful.
The only suggestion for the Coconut Macaroon is a filling. Maybe a filling similar to a coconut crème pie :)
