1860 Saloon And Hardshell Café

1860’s is really three bars in one. While Hardshell Café is just a basic bar (more of a lunch place than anything), I really enjoy the main saloon and game room. The game room is regularly packed but offers all sorts of your typical electronic and conventional bar games (pool, arcade games, foosball, etc.).
The real reason to come to 1860’s is for the live music. Almost every night of the week 1860’s hosts tremendous live music. Regardless of your taste in music you’re sure to enjoy the act they have performing that night. The crowd in the saloon is typically closer to middle-​age but it regularly turns into a good time with people dancing. The drink prices aren’t bad either and the bartenders provide great service.

I ordered a garlic cheese bread roast beef sandwich and I’ve had stomach problems for the past three days.

Tammy was our waitress and she kept the tea flowing was right there checking on us through our two hour lunch adventure.
I had the blues burger fries and slaw everything was great.
Bobby had the fish and chips and he loved it.
Everyone here seems so happy running around doing their job.
Great place for lunch and yes we will be back and hope that Tammy is there because she is also very easy on the eyes… yea she is a cutie pie…
We recommend you stop in and enjoy lunch and a glass of tea.

Worst experience & service ever. Didn’t know employees are allowed to drink on the job! Should consider firing the dark haired bartender in the lower bar.

Easily my favorite bar in Soulard. The waitresses and bartenders are all good looking and very attentive. The food is above average, but I’m not going for the food most of the time. It’s a great place to go play pool or foosball and watch the game. I never have a bad time.

Mardi Gras in old Soulard and already hopping! If your into blues, Cajun and a pub crawl adventurer, stop here first. Order the crabcakes and a side of jambalaya. Polish it off with a Fireball and Bud. And yes, they don’t eat Cajuns! at least they haven’t this one yet… Chow

By far THE WORST experience I have EVER HAD anywhere. Tammy got our order wrong from the start, we wanted two buckets of mich golden light, she responded that they didn’t have ultra…
It seemed like she had a few.
Fast forward two hours later, trying to check out and our tickets were beyond wrong. Charged for food when we didn’t order any, repeatedly asked what we got (over 10 times), and our cards were swiped repeatedly with the wrong charges– $ 88, $ 42, and finally $ 18. If Tammy is working RUN the other way.
Side note– ALYSSA at the main bar deserves all of the credit in the world. After ALL of that happened, she made us happy, turned on the blues game, and got us a beer with a prompt and correct ticket. She’s a gem– find her. She saved you, 1860.

I enjoy visiting on Saturdays from 2p — 6p, there’s a live band, Soul Reunion. This is a great way to have an awesome Saturday afternoon and get out of the house, especially if you need to have an early gathering with friends vs. going out Saturday night. Reasonable prices on everything.

Out bartender was amazing! She make a killer Moscow mule, they played all kinds of music and everyone was very friendly. I highly recommend it. It is for the 20 – 30 crowd but still had a great time

If you are afraid of clowns or jesters, you will freak out. The dining room theme is of Mardi Gras and they have a 10 foot jester leering over the dining tables. It’s just odd ant to me, just makes the space feel uncomfortable.
Food was ok… but I wasn’t expecting to be blown away when I ordered a grilled chicken ceaser salad. It was fine.

Watch the bartenders, especially the grey haired lady with super short skirt. She pushes a tab on you and then jacks it up. Old scam that can Ruin a place. Won’t be drinking there anymore.

When you’re hungry anything tastes good. Had the seafood gumbo and it wasn’t too bad. I expected it to be more favorable

This is an ok enough place to take a group of friends for some drinks, pool, and table shuffleboard. The selection of drinks are pretty basic and at least one person in your group will eventually end up in a conversation with one of the local toothless drunks… Yes i said toothless. This place is definitely hole-​in-​the-​wall night life at its best.

Dive bar in Soulard. Good times… Just chilled and drank there this weekend. Fun atmosphere! It’s a popular spot to go on a pub crawl, which are popular in Soulard. Can’t say I’d choose to go there when I’m sober, but I don’t mean that as an insult. Just the way it is. And besides, they don’t need me to be sober since I’ll spend more when I’m not!

Let me start by saying that I am not a fan of super crowded and loud bars.
This bar is perfect for me. We wandered in one night and they had a huge jug of hurricanes for $ 2. I thought «hell yeah, I can get drunk for under $ 10» and I did! There’s totally regulars that are here (we have seen the same dude and friends every time, but they lip sync to the songs and it’s entertaining).
The menu is above what I’d consider bar food. They have great burgers. They taste homemade right off the grill. The shrimp is also good. It’s a nice laid back atmosphere to sit around and have a bite to eat and drink if you don’t want to be in a crazy bar.

Bad food, weird service.
They should trade in their food menu for drink menu, which they do not have, but then will ask you what you’d like to drink… I don’t know what you have because it’s not listed anywhere!
The nachos were pitiful, the weird nacho cheese tastes like water then there was shredded unmelted cheese on top. Poor excuse for dish I learned to make when I was 4 years old.
Avoid!

Mehhh… We stopped here the other day and weren’t too impressed. I mean there wasn’t much wrong with it, but there wasn’t much right either. It’s a decent dive bar — with pretty decent food and the service seemed okay. However, what really got me was the music and the heavy smoking right outside. The crowd seemed a little older than some of the other bars nearby — more in their mid-​thirties, but other than that, no complaints! Just a typical dive bar :)

I’m not much of a Soulard person but when we came across 1860 Saloon coupon inside Taste Cards deck we decided to try them out.
I’m glad we did because the cat fish served over herb rice was delicious. My friend ordered the beef sandwich which she said was very good.
The live music was great too. I would def come back.

Oh dear Hardshell…
It’s fun, 1860 is a little bit of an older crowd, hardshell the young group. Just walk through all 3 sections till you find the ppl you wanna drink with… middle section is the game area.
Moving back to Soulard– I spend about 5 days a week there. Gotta love Steph, Shelly, Erica, Ria and of course Tina.

Let’s hear it for the average!
1860 Saloon and Hardshell Café has been a review long since put off. I don’t wander down to this establishment very often. During my first year in Soulard, I have been there four times. My first and second visits were pretty decent. The next was just awful. And my recent one was okay again. Thus, we play the percentages!
As far as grabbing a quick pint, 1860 is pretty ideal. The beer is fairly inexpensive, and they do rotate their specials. I met friends the first time but went by myself the second time. I had a few pints of PBR and a crab cake sandwich. Altogether, pretty affordable trips. And the crab cakes are housemade and pretty delicious.
However, trip three was a disaster. 1860 needs to add descriptions of their pizzas to the menu. We came in to order something quick. When the waitress told us that they had a seafood pizza, it sounded pretty good. She sort of vaguely described the toppings on the pizza, so we decided to order it.
I can usually stomach my way through most meal. However, one vegetable that I cannot handle is olives. I hate them! Just the smell of olives makes me sick. Our pizza was covered in olives. We were troopers and tried to forge through it. I took them off, but the taste was just too much.
Finally, we met fellow Unilocaler Mandie M. for a few pints just a week or two ago. I decided to go back to the crab cake sandwich for some assurance. The food was pretty good, but the service left us feeling pretty neglected.
I just don’t get out as much as I would like, so when I make my rounds, I just don’t see 1860 Saloon in the plans. There’s just too many options in Soulard. Maybe for a pint or two, but not much else.

The Game room rocks. Plenty of space and cheap pool, games, and shuffleboard. A good place to hang out and grab some drinks with some friends.
Note: All the machines are operated by quarters, so make sure to bring cash and/​or quarters.

This is a review for the Game Room addition only: Awesome! When I heard about the Game Room, I didn’t know what to expect. I was hoping for a video arcade; no such luck. Instead pool tables, dartboards, shuffleboard, and Golden Tee all placed in strategic locations around the room fill the bar with friendly competition. You might have to wait your turn to gain access, but the variety of games is a fun twist on the standard bar scene.
The room is fairly small and there’s only one bar and one bartender, but she is on her game! If you’re in the area and want something different, stop by the Game Room and bring your quarters.

1860’s is a restaurant/​bar located in a historic building at the corner of 9^th and Geyer in the bar district of Soulard. It has been around for awhile and is known primarily as a live music venue, specializing, but not limited to Blues music.
They have three rooms with different themes. All have their own outside entrance. The corner room is a small old world bar and music hub. The middle room is a game room, and the 3^rd room (Hardshell Café) seems to have been a converted courtyard. It has skylights and a large bar. It’s a little more bohemian and colorful. Very hokie. I like the bar in here the best. It’s like a neighborhood bar with jukebox and food. Lots of natural light during the day. You feel like you are outside.
The food is generally Cajun and sandwiches. Most everything has a spicy aioli on it. I’m not a big fan. It all tastes a bit heavy and rich to me and the only flavor you get across the board is the aioli. They do have jambalaya and gumbo that is ok.
Positives: Location, location, location. Popular pub crawl stop in the bar district. Live music.
Negatives: The Food

One of the main reasons I like Unilocal is that it exposes me to new experiences. It guides me out of my box and my comfort zone.
With that being stated, I would have never experienced this totally cool neighborhood bar in Soulard. As Jenny P stated it is small and divey, but in my opinon that is what gave it all it’s warmth and charm. The regulars were welcoming of new patrons and engaged conversation.
They’ve just opened a new game room that offers a good variety of bar amusements. To make it easier for you to get your drink on while you get your game on, they have a second bar located in the new addition.
The staff is friendly, and the bartenders make a good drink. I was totally amazed at the quality of food from a dive bar. The crab cakes could win a blue ribbon at a county fair and the chicken strips put other bars to shame.
My new Unilocal friend Matt C., is right the thin crust pizza is «really good». I didn’t take a menu home, but wish they delievered on The Hill.
Next time I’m in Soulard, I’ll stop by 1860.
