The Gentry’s Landing

I stayed there for 5 years and things have changed a lot for better. Nice apartments, friendly staff, very safe, Self temperature control, Laundry service available for a nominal price, ok gym — not so great! A overall great place. I wish they had some play room for people indoor.

This place falls squarely in the «you get what you pay for» category. I stayed a little over a year and that was enough. For the most part, the people who worked there were nice and I had no issues getting work orders completed. The immediate surrounding blocks are sketchy and don’t have much foot traffic. The windows and HVAC units are old so my electric bills were through the roof just to keep the place livable, not even comfortable. Highway 70 runs right by and you can hear the constant hum of cars through the old windows. I lost a lot of sleep in the first couple months before I got used to it. Speaking of old, the appliances were probably older than me. Parking is a separate fee and you have to pay to use the laundry in the basement. The part that really left a sour taste in my mouth was that when I moved in, the apartment was filthy. Crumbs, dirt, and dead bugs from the previous tenant were everywhere. When I moved out, my mother and I spent an extra day making the place spotless and leaving it in much better condition than when I moved in. Even after that, they still only returned less than half of my deposit.

I like this apartment building. The leasing office was nice. Moving in was easy and the view is superior. Can’t wait to try the roof top pool. Easy on to the highway. Sometimes quiet and efficient living. I recommend with reservations. Laundry facility uses these cards for payment which is nice. Two ok equipped gyms. One complaint is the strangeness of some tenants. It is a hodgepodge collection of oddities that include shut ins, personal hygiene issues, odd ethnic smells, some loud trust fund party freaks, and a tenant who apparently owns ½ of a whole floor. But there are also professionals and your average white guy too so take your pick right? The business center is more a hangout for people without cable or internet or just strange women who like to sprawl out on the couch and eat and consume the snacks out of the vending machines. You can expect lots of strange men walking the hallways on the promenade level shouting in foreign languages on their cells. The maintenance staff and office staff are nice but sometimes it feels more like we are in a dormitory with the threats to be evicted for this or that almost everywhere around the place. I sometimes wonder if the Mansion house isn’t a bit more homogenous but I have a better view that they ever will so… It certainly is an exercise in patience and tolerance here. But, their move in rates are reasonable and they allow
Month to month leases for those of us who fear commitments. The tiny lobby is sort of a hang out sometimes for the oddities of the building who call this place home. But there is a dry cleaner and tailor in the building which is nice. Parking indoors is a plus but do not expect to be treated like a customer by the parking company. Their customer service is grossly lacking and their ability to take credit cards or cash for month parking is a hassle. Let’s try to get into this century and clean up the disgusting office that I have to traipse into to pay my parking via paper check or money order. Who writes checks? What the heck is a money order?
The ambient noise from the road and the hvac units is sometimes deafening. But it is occasionally broken up by the crackhead ranting or the spice freak coming unglued to the north of the building. Walking distance to arch and lots of dining. But I don’t feel incredibly safe outside downstairs after dark or even walking my dogs on the lava rock stones on the promenade where yet another eviction threat waits if you are caught letting your dog on the mansion house grassy area. There are lots of empty dumpy offices and this huge abandoned junk filled stand alone building attached and the grounds keeping is sometimes less that perfect with overflowing butt containers, dog piss and shit everywhere outside and beer cans strewn about. I am not sure when the windows were last washed. Anywhere. Landscaping? Nope not here. They don’t even need to mow grass so don’t expect more than plastic plants at the entrance. My heart and my aesthetic sense longs for the gardens of the central west end. But here I sit. Dream on.

My lease is about to end and there is no way I am renewing it, I hope this serves as a warning for people looking for apartments. Stay away from this place! Management does little to improve conditions and will try to get every penny out of you that they can. They did just put in new washers and dryers, but they raised the price to use them. Air circulation is poor, I have a neighbor who smokes so randomly through the day and night my apartment fills with cigarette smoke. For the price you’d be paying here you can easily get more for your buck elsewhere, heed my warning, stay away!
