COCO Chocolate Lounge & Bistro

I went there and they didn’t bother to tell me they had closed down. There I was squatting for half an hour waiting for a drink. TERRIBLE SERIVCE! The police finally arrived and arrested me for breaking and entering. They however were kind enough to stop and get me a cold beverage before taking me downtown.

The portions are tiny, the food is not really that super compared to other restaurants. I think the lamb and chocolate martini were the highlights. The pizza was not really that great for the price. Go for happy hour and see what you think, because the regular food feels overpriced, dainty, and hit or miss.

I’ve visited during the day and and night and I’ve enjoyed both.
During happy hour I enjoyed various desserst with a friend. A Fondu plate, a few cocktails, hummus and pita chips or bread… either way the hummus was delicious and the drinks were strong (thumbs up) The fondu was good (marshmallows were handmade? I didn’t care if they were shipped in, handmade, store bought or what… they were hard and weird tasting)
I thought the place was interesting to look at. Very empty (about 5 other people besides me), from the looks of it on their lunch break.
There were swings and romantically tufted arm chairs like a love chamber haha. I liked it.
During the night it was a hip hop club. I stopped by here with a couple friends and saw that there was valet. We skipped it because there was plenty of parking.
The lunge played plenty of current hiphop and rap music and the dance floor was awesome. I had fun and so did my friends. If you’re not into the club scene stop by for a change of scenery.

This review is for the table/​service/​atmosphere:
There was a bachlorette party in the main dining room during dinner hours, complete with stripper.
The wait staff is poorly trained (can you say arugula? campari?), unfamiliar with what is in the kitchen (i’m sorry, the kitchen has discontinued two of the items you ordered), and confused (at 6:00 we were told the happy hour, which ends at 7:00, was over).
The crab-​stuffed mushrooms were so drenched in bechamel, that neither the fungus nor the crab was discernable.
The very sad argula salad was over-​dressed and soggy.
The over-​salted fries could not possibly have been fried in duck fat… and had not been fried anytime recently.
I did not try either the steak or ribs that my table mates ordered.
The snails were fat and juicy, but served with crostini – an inadequate implement for soaking up garlic butter.
Please clean the chandeliers.
With so many other amazing choices in this area of San Antonio alone; I will not go back.

I used to love this place but it seems that every time I go something is very different and unfortunately it is usually the things that I liked about it that are no longer there. For example they used to have a DJ outside playing R&B and Hip-​Hop AKA Top-​40 inside in the main area was usually salsa music then on the other side of the wall it was more hip-​hop and less top-​40. Last time I went no Top-​40 outside, no salsa music inside and not a good mix of people.
COCO Bring back the variety…

I love COCO’s happy hour. A group of girls get together once a month at Coco, we curl up on the comfy couches (sometimes on the velvet swing) have appetizers and drink chocolate martinis. Their newest addition the salted caramel martini is my newest addiction. The appetizers are small but they are supposed to be finger foods. Order quite a few and order early… the kitchen is not fast but goodness I am not expecting fast food. The waitstaff has always been so sweet and caring.

This is no longer the Coco anymore like when it first opened. Let’s say it is a lower class place now. The wait staff dressed like they work at a bar and not a high-​class restaurant. However, they do offer $ 3 off their small plates, pizzas, deserts, and drinks between 4 to 7pm but if you use a Groupon, the discounts do not apply.
We got there before 7pm and specifically ordered items that would get the discounts and we also had a Groupon. Our waitress knew we were ordering those items for the discounts and that we had a Groupon. When she asked for the Groupon and brought us the check, the discounts were not applied so I asked what happened. She said because you used a Groupon, the discounts do not apply. I was thinking «Are you kidding me?» It would be nice if she would have told us that before she redeemed our Groupon so now there is no way we could keep the Groupon for future use and we also did not get the discounts. The waitress was also nowhere to be seen after she brought us the check or else I would have given her my two cents.
Long story short, don’t expect too much at this place. But instead check out some of the newer places down at the Pearl. Much more high-​class for the $.

disappointment.
i’ve been here a handful of times, EVERY TIME trying to get their chocolate soufflé. attempt #1 — i learned that it was only served on saturdays. sometime later — i learned that you had to pre-​order it and make a reservation. a few visits later, i learned that management had changed or something and that it is no longer even on the menu! the food here is way overpriced and the vibe is weird (lots of old people? or like 50 year-​old women) so there’s really no other reason to visit. their happy hour selection is alright but there are plenty of better options out there!
oh and on one visit, the table next to us was so obnoxiously loud/​drunk that our server promised us free champagne on our next visit. but by the time we came back again, management had changed so we assumed that offer was gone too… not that we really had any way of proving he said that anyway. oh well!
maybe i just had way too high of expectations for a place named «chocolate lounge» but coco’s is definitely off my list. :(

I promise to keep this review short and concise, so here you go:
Sexual (the drink) (3.5÷5) — I’m not a big sweet drink person, and this drink certainly didn’t win me over.
Coconut Shrimp (³⁄₅) — not bad not bad, but nothing special
Calamari (3.5÷5) — I like that they give you a vinegar dip, kinda different.
Pizza (³⁄₅) — interesting concept and combinations, but I’ve had better
Happy hour (⁴⁄₅) — at least the price is acceptable
I would come back for the ambience and the people, but probably won’t be thinking of the restaurant for the food.

I went to Coco Lounge for a Bachelorette Party. We each paid $ 5 cover to get in. We didn’t have a reservation but we noticed they had an open table outside. An employee came to us wanting to sell us bottle service for the table, but not only was it an outrageous price, there was only 4 of us — one being pregnant, and not able to drink. The good thing was that we got to keep the table! The chocolate martinis were like adult chocolate milks — not as good as SoHo but the music was good. Overall I expected much more after reviewing their website and reading rave reviews. I don’t think I would go again — especially if I had to pay cover.

I purchased a Groupon ($ 15 for $ 30) for COCO a few months back. I was really excited to finally try out this place that suggested they specialized in chocolates and French cuisine. The bottom line up front is that I would suspect their groupon promotion hurt their business instead of help it with poor service and average-​bad food.
When I called for reservations, I was told they would be completely full and we were welcome to sit at the bar. On the restaurant side, I watched as only about 20% of their tables were ever full the entire time we were there. I get that people don’t show up for reservations sometimes and the restaurant can’t predict that, but then they should be able to react accordingly! Sat down at the bar, menus were gooey, covered in sticky chocolate, yuck.
Food: We ordered a Manhattan and a champagne cocktail, excellent presentation, new twist on classic drinks– great bartender… but after serving us he never came back to let us order another drink! We ordered a pizza and lamb burger to share. The pizza (as my husband perfectly described it) tasted like something one might have made in college when you get home from the bar and you’re drunk. Cracker crust, with way too much processed cheese and Hormel type processed sausage or pepperoni, or whatever it was. The burger and fries were good actually, I would order those again even though the menu’s description of side salad was the leaf of lettuce and tomato on top of the burger! I don’t consider myself a picky eater and I generally pretty much like food in general, but we were so underwhelmed with dinner, we decided to cut our losses and skip dessert. Womp. Also, I never really caught on to the chocolate/​French food theme. Yes, they had 1 or 2 chocolate desserts (like many restaurants do) but nothing so significant that they should name their restaurant «COCO».
The manger was telling us how the entire place and the space next door transform into a club at night. They have pretty cool/​romantic-​ish lounge furniture so maybe that would be fun, but I rather not take my chances on crappy pricey food at the same place again!

Went there for dinner on a Tuesday night. First of all, chocolate lounge? Don’t know why it’s called that. Didn’t see anything chocloate related other than a few chocolate drinks and the standard chocolate desserts. Nonetheless, what about the bistro part? Well, the two of us decided to share entrees: the 5 cheese pizza with salami, and the kobe beef burger. Well the pizza looked and tasted like something I would have made freshman year of college with a microwave and a case of the munchies. Thin crust? More like some left over tortillas. 5 cheese? More like some processed crap out of a bag. As for salami… Hello hormel! $ 14 wasted, and we left three slices behind and the pizza we did eat was only because I was so hungry I need some food.
The Burger: Not bad, but nothing great. It said it came with fries and salad. Well, the salad must have been the pieces of lettuce on top. Fries, not bad. The bacon was horribly stringy though. Moreover, for $ 16, I would have expected a damn good burger. What we got was sub-​par to Jack in the Box.
Was there anything good about the place? Well the Old Fashioned I had wasn’t bad. Although the bartender never asked if I wanted another after I had finished off my first drink half way through dinner.
Oh yeah, and our menus had sticky chocolate goo all over them. So perhaps I was wrong… there is more chocolate to this place.

I’ve had a few ladies nights here and it’s just too much for me in so many aspects. First, the crowd. Omg, the crowd! Maybe if I came here in my peak party years I wouldn’t be so annoyed but the huge amount of people they cram in this joint is ridick. Add that to the fact that a small hallway connects the main area to a smaller dance room and the bottlenecking is maddening! The people comprising the crowd range from young-​ish trendsters to older ladies and gents who’s kids are probably in high school.
Since I was at COCO, I had to try one of their chocolate cocktails and went with a Godiva Martini. One word, two syllables: Nay-​Stay. The highlight was the chocolate straw which I nibbled on while ditching the drink at some birthday girl’s VIP table. Oh, that’s the other thing, if you do not reserve a VIP table, you are not going to be able to sit the entire night. (Killer heels was not a very thought out notion.)
The only reason why COCO got two stars instead of one is because their music choice is awesome. You can go in the trendy dance room and get some electro/​top 40, the main room had a funk band playing and outside was straight-​up salsa.

I went on a Saturday night for the club. Most of my clubbing has been in Vegas, so that is what I am comparing to. As my rating indicates, I enjoyed the night. I think they have done a good job with space to make it so that dance floors stay active. That is huge for me. There is nothing worse than going to a club and finding that no one is dancing. I liked the mix the DJ played. The drinks were what I expected. They were more than at a random bar, but less than I would have paid for the same drinks in a place like Vegas.
They have tables and bottle service, but I felt the layout did a good job of keeping them included in the main party and not pulling a lot of life away from the dance floor. I was also happy to see that the crowd was all adults, not a bunch of kids.
I guess the most direct statement I can make is that I plan to go back again. In fact, this might become a regular destination for me.

*I decided to choose Coco Lounge over a promo that said ‘free complimentary champagne, appetizers, ballons, etc. for your party!
Invited a party of 8 – 10 people only to find out that it is all FALSE advertising, (and I’m being totally honest here, I personally paid handsomely for a bottle of Grey Goose and I NEVER got any of what was advertised).
Service was subpar, and really NOT what you would expect. Me and ALL of my friends think the same.
Thank you but this is really not the place where you would want to spend a birthday, or (for me) a goodbye party :(

I didn’t come here for dinner. My friend had a birthday party here on a Friday night with bottle service, it was more like self service. LOL We didn’t have a host to fill our cups. Maybe that cost extra. =P
I enjoyed the DJ in the techno room, he played good dance music. The live spanish music was cool too so you can bounce around. It is a pain in the butt to cross over to the other side because of the little hallway where the bathroom is located. Everyone is rubbing shoulders and squeezing through. They need to figure out how to handle that issue.
I’d come here again to dance, if you’re looking for fun dancing and good music.

We went here for a relaxing night and comfortable chat and all thought this is a good place for it. It has a bar area with a comfortable lounge area. It also has some formal dinning area and another area for hosting parties. Since we just wanted to try their drinks and dessert, we settled at their lounge area which has many comfortable sofas. Their desserts were great! I like the 7 layers cheesecake even though it was too sweet for my taste. It was a huge piece so we all tasted a bit. I thought their crème brûlée was okay and too sweet for me. I am totally not a dessert person so I have very low tolerance to sweets. Despite that, all my friends loved their desserts. We didn’t try their chocolate martini but the waitress told us that’s their signature drink.
We all enjoyed the time there because it was good place to chat without distractions. It was a good place to hang out and chat with friends. I would like to try their dinner and happy hour some other time.

I have such mixed feelings! My husband and I had dinner there and the food was good, the service was great. We started with the goat cheese dip. The cheese has a whipped texture, not the kind of goat cheese I usually enjoy. So I probably wouldn’t repeat the app. For entrees we ordered the mussels and the foie gras burger. Both were huge servings and we were so stuffed there was no room for dessert. Both entrees were delicious and I would recommend them.
Our server was excellent and he let us know about the nightlife and happy hour. We went to check out happy hour a few days later on Friday and were pretty disappointed. The happy hour menu offers great drink specials (I loved the «dulce de coco»), and super cheap food options (whole pizzas for $ 5!) but the atmosphere was bleh. There weren’t many people there and the music was awful.
We would definitely return for dinner. Probably never again for happy hour.

Finally! Last time, we didn’t have time to come here, but at last we made it. When I first found this on Unilocal a few years ago, I could not WAIT to come here … chocolate martinis? french food and great ambience? Yes!
I REALLY wanted to 5 star this place, but alas I cannot.
GPS had a hard time finding this place, but the German (as my friend said) owner/​manager on the phone helped us (I’m pretty sure he’s French). When we got there, it was located at a place kind of like The Shops at Legacy in Plano. The place is clean and dark inside (like Café Intermezzo in Georgia) and there are places to sit outside too. It was Thursday night, so maybe that’s why it wasn’t very crowded…
Like:

Calamari appetizer.
Chocolate martini.
Deco of the place.
Waiter.
Not so much:
Salmon entrée. It was okay. And I got excited about the whipped potatoes, but it was just a slather of sauce.
Vibe… not enough people, so it felt dead.
The Kiss dessert was just okay to. I should have tried the Nutella dessert …
Maybe I hyped it up in my head too much, but I really wanted this place to be a Texas Café Intermezzo/​amazing French food place. I would go back for the likes though. Give it a try.

Came back for Sunday Brunch. The female crêpe chef — amazing! And really friendly too. If you aren’t sure exactly what you want, tell her what you feel like and she’ll suggest the perfect mixture of ingredients for your crepes. Definitely give the crêpe buffet a whirl. And go back for seconds. And thirds.
The full buffet was quite a spread — lots of little pastries and cheeses. My bf got really full after getting a sample of almost everything. He felt the chocolate could have been richer; he said it was a little bland.
Rather overpriced for brunch. $ 45+ (incl. tip) for the crêpe buffet and brunch buffet (w/​o access to the crepes) — granted it’s a buffet and you can definitely refill your plate to get your money’s worth but I still felt it was too much to spend on brunch.
The regular appetizer menu still gets 4 stars from me. Brunch was just too pricey and even though it’s a buffet the choices still felt limited to me — so it gets 3 stars.
