I’d watched several of 18 Mighty Mountain Warriors videos posted on YouTube and had seen their documentary, so it was so freaking cool getting to watch them do a show for my Asian American film class at Cal State Fullerton. They are HILARIOUS, and their comedy is well thought-out, addressing key issues Asian Americans face. One of my favorites had them posing as underpaid, Filipino farm laborers(Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee), whom Cesar Chavez emulated. There were several Pinoy jokes like how they worked on hallowed ground«perhaps even halo-halo ground.» Another of my favorite sketches of theirs is «Paranoid or Political,» which attacked the tests immigrants would have to take to become enfranchised. Other sketches they do have lampooned topics like white-washing and yellowface, «Tiger Mother,» politics, John Woo films, sexuality, and society’s general misconceptions of Asians including people who speak in «ching chong» and pull at the corners of their eyes. They’re excellent in presenting a point of view the mainstream media largely ignores.

The 18MMW have a new LA show up… I was a little asleep at the wheel, but this one(«Just Like White People») is up until August 24(2008, just in case I don’t update this again for a while) and just so you know, they’re performing at: 6476 Santa Monica Blvd. in Hollywood, CA90038. They got a «Go» from the LA Weekly, and you know how tough to please those guys are — here’s the link to the review:
