Ability Center

Let’s start from the beginning: I made an appointment a week in advance for 11am to have a vehicle lift serviced and removed on behalf of a client. The staff was friendly and knowledgable. Absolutely no complaints there. I asked specifically how long it would take because I would be in a time crunch that day and needed to plan. She told me 1 hour. Made it seem like that wouldn’t change.
Day of service: I showed up at 10:45am hoping to ensure they were ready to work on it at 11, assuming then I’d be on the road by noon or slightly later than that. She informed me upon arrival that «stuff» happened and that it would take 1.5 hours, maybe longer, she wasn’t sure. Come 1:15, I’m already late for work, and the vehicle is just being finished. Quite disappointed by this. Had I been told upfront it could take 1 – 2 hours, I wouldn’t have minded one bit as I could’ve tried to rearrange my schedule.

Jerry is great! I have an older modification that can be temperamental and be difficult to diagnose when things go bad. The guys at AbilityCenter have come to the rescue and allowed me to continue forward. They’re knowledgeable, friendly, fair and get it done right. Aside from general fixing, Jerry and the crew can do some amazing stuff with modifications. I definitely plan to use them for my next vehicle.

Everyone from Mary at the front desk to Henry for rental vans are super accommodating and always there to help you. Ability’s rental vans are always clean and ready to go and I’ve been renting vans for several years nearly once a month. I’ve never had a problem and rate them as an excellent business and would highly recommend them to anyone needing disability transportation.

I have had three great experiences here at Ability center. The staff has been very friendly and doing their best to accommodate my family’s needs. They had a van that fit exactly what we needed that was out-​of-​state, they shipped it the next day for us so we could test drive it.

I have not had 100% Perfect Satisfaction with the Ability Center, however it has been Very Good! My experience is long and deep with this company. I have been a client since 1989, before it existed as a business owned by CEO Daryl Heath, then under ownership by MPS Corporation. Over this 23 year period, I’ve purchased multiple Modified Handicap Drivable Vans, and Adapted Wheelchairs… OVERALL, «I’d rate my Ability Center SATISFACTION at 98% POSITIVE. GM Terry Barton, Owner Daryl Heath, and Sales Director Henry Cuilty are all highly reputable, stand up guys, who want to do the «right thing», and watch the back side to protect their customers. The staff at the Ability Center are extraordinary. Their care, concern and overall desire to help is unmatched anywhere. It’s been a relationship of over 10 years now; 3 power chairs and 1 ramp van. I wouldn’t go anywhere else.

I recently purchased my first handicap accessible vehicle and was not knowledgeable. Terry @ the Ability Center was quite good in explaining the options available, how they work, the cost etc. During the process of setting up the vehicle, Ability (Terry and TJ) came to our house to pick up my power chair to make sure all is installed and working properly-​this was done quickly and efficiently. The vehicle is working quite well and is working as told. We have returned several times for minor service issues and these have been promptly repaired. I looked around @ other centers and did extensive work on line prior and during the shopping process with Ability center which was helpful. Also I found their pricing to be competitive.

I have been trying to get service from The Ability Center for my mom’s wheelchair. Within an 18 month period, my mom’s wheelchair began to fall apart. I would repeatedly call for service, and get a response, such as «we don’t cover that» or something to that effect. After repeated calls, trips to the faclilty, and frustration, I finally had my mom ride MTS to the Kearney Mesa location about 9 months ago, and she came back with the same raggedy chair, saying, «they are going to order me new tires». !!! The entire back of her chair is being held up by duct tape, it only charges when it wants to, the leg rests don’t work, and this morning my mom got her foot caught in the wheelchair lift of the transport van, going to her dialysis treatment, because of those leg rests. I had better service when we ordered her first chair from a company out of Santa Ana! I will never order another wheelchair from them again, and I would recommend anyone who asked me not to as well.

I had my controls from my old truck moved to my new truck. Same make and model. The initial encounter was good. Sales guy was «no problem» to everything I requested; move the controls, touch up paint, etc. I asked twice for a quote and he said it wasn’t necessary. End of the delivery day came and no call. I waited until the next day and then decided to call that afternoon. They were just finishing and gave me the quote of $ 1600! I asked why so high? The representative called me back and said there was a mistake and it was really $ 1300. Still very high!
I know I should have insisted on a quote, that was my mistake; never again. I talked them down to just under $ 1200. They scratched my new truck in 2 places and I had to get them to try to remove those; didn’t completely come out. 1 week later my controls were not working and again I had to go back and get them repaired.
They are again not working and I am not going back there.

The people at the Ability Center are the best, helpful, caring & knowledgeable. I don’t know what I would do without them, all I know is they keep my life moving in a positive direction. Thank you for being one of the finest businesses in San Diego.
An excellent example of the one on one personal service I am continually receiving from the AC, San Diego, is my scooter lift on the back of my 4 Runner. I purchased my Bruno lift when acquiring my mobility scooter. These lifts are very strong and very expensive.
I have had a string of defective actuators replaced on my Bruno lift, I am on my 3^rd. Greg Jones at the AC, caught the defects with the bad actuators before they went out on me. He actually listened to the lift during the inspection I have performed periodically. I say that sarcastically since in today’s times, listening is ignored, sales are more important. Thanks Greg. The actuator is the part that lifts the scooter up and down and off and on so it’s really important it’s functioning properly.

I used to work with a client that had a disability. His wheelchair and van constantly needed maintenance. The Ability Center was probably one of the worst customer service/​follow through/​overpriced businesses I have ever dealt with. They continually blew my mind with their unprofessional, head in the clouds, moronic service. There was one good employee. His name was Carlos.
I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND ANYONE GOING HERE!
