Specialties

We are a cultural activity center and art space. We are dedicated to the preservation and support of the Chicana/​o, Latino and Indigenous art and culture.

Our Gallery is open everyday except Monday. Our normal gallery hours are 12−4pm, but we have special events and workshops all the time. So check our website for upcoming events.

History

Established in 1971.

The Centro was first formed in the Ford Building, known today as the Air and Space Museum in Balboa Park. It was then moved to the building it occupies now at 2004 Park Boulevard. This came after an intense struggle with the City of San Diego to claim a space for Chicana/​o arts and culture in San Diego. The Centro Cultural was dedicated in 1971 at the new building and is still there today.

Attended a Latin Charity Dance event to help raise money for South Bay Community Centers. Anything that involves charity, dancing or volunteer im there!
The event was hosted by my former Company’s APAF, Globe & LAF forums. Food was provided along with Salsa/​Bachata lessons.
A fun & successful event. I look forward to volunteering for South Bay Community Centers in the near future.
Also, the venue has a lot of creative arts drawn & painted by young artistic children.
Definitely check it out.

Never knew that they had their own parking lot (super tiny). We parked about half a mile away from here.
When we walked in, no one greeted us. Couldn’t tell if it was closed or not. All the lights were on, so we just walked around to see all the paintings. (I was here for my bf’s class) Personally, I wouldn’t come here again

Walked all the way here from the zoo car park and it is all closed despite it being only 3.30. Maybe it’s gone permanently?

Came all the way over to this place with our family and they were closed at 3:30. Not only did we walk a mile to get here, But we have someone in a wheel chair with us. Waste of everyone’s time and energy. If you close at 3:30, then change your time!!!

Although more like a museum, every now and then there is a dance event held here — including a film that used it (and local salsa dancers) for some key scenes.

Affordable and versatile community space! It’s right next to the world beat center, so you can’t miss it. The gallery is not huge, but large enough to hold a good size exhibition. And like what Jonathan V. said, the volunteers who run this place are cool and really easy to work with.

This cultural center is one of the gems of San Diego. I have worked with the volunteers here for many events and they are humble, intelligent, and we all know how to throw some jokes around. If you ever want to hold an event here like a party, a b-​boy/​b-​girl jam, or an art sho this is a place you have to consider. There is good parking and its based in scenic Balboa Park. What more can you ask for?
