At the age of 17 Juan became and professional while still in high school and was hired as one of two top percussionists in the San Diego County to perform in a new high school brass and percussion group called the Sea World’s «Sea Star Band». For 2 years he was performing around the park while being an active music major at San Diego State University. Sanchez became the percussion section leader for the SDSU Marching Aztecs, while he also performed and toured with a Scottish pipe band called the «Cameron Highlanders».
