Cupcakes Squared

Stopped here for cupcakes for my guy’s birthday. Super happy that they had carrot cake cupcakes that I didn’t have to call ahead to order. Beautiful presentation and reasonable prices. I got a half-​dozen variety. They were good, but overall a bit too dense for my liking (I tend toward light and fluffy when it comes to cupcakes). He really loved the carrot cake one!

My wife and I could not be more disappointed with their cupcakes. We had bought cupcakes from Cupcakes Squared in the past, and they were wonderful. But we bought four yesterday (for $ 15), and they must have been several days old. They were hard, dry, and generally terrible. They should be ashamed to sell cupcakes like this.

Must I say, coming from a Cup cake lover, that this place is so delicious, they are different and unique in flavor. I really appreciate them having the mini cupcakes, so my son can have just enough but not too much. This rich cream frosting was very delicious, I love the Chocolate and the red velvet cupcakes. I wish the hours were a little earlier, and they are closed Mondays. Overall, I would come back to order some more, but not all the time, or I will pass out of a sugar attack.

Cupcakes that are square… sure why not? They did branch out and try something new with the shape I suppose, but the texture and heaviness to the cupcakes left them being less a cupcake and more like a heavy bread. The girls working were very friendly and helpful and the glass case with the baked goods was clean and neat. They have regular sized cupcakes and mini. They also make custom cakes and have some type of cookie bars. I was happy to try this place finally, but with other gourmet cupcake shops doing it better I can’t see coming back.
Carrot Cake (mini $ 2) — I like that the price is fair and because of that it allows you the affordability try a few flavors to see what you might like. On the day I visited they only had a couple flavors out, so I wasn’t able to try all the ones they had on the menu board. The carrot cake has carrots, pineapple, pecans, currants with a cream cheese frosting. The cream cheese frosting didn’t look appealing yet tasted good, but I tasted not one pineapple! I love carrot cake with pineapple, it’s just how I personally make mine, so I was excited to see they offered it here. I was bummed about tasting no pineapple and the cake itself was a bit heavy and oily.
Lemon (regular $ 3.75) — this one is lemon cake with lemon buttercream. I love lemon flavored things, but I did not love this cupcake. The buttercream had zero lemon flavor other than the zest sprinkled on the top (tasted more like cool whip) and the cupcake was real heavy and wet on the inside yet crunchy on the outside. I did taste lemon in the cupcake, but after two bites I was done. It just didn’t have the texture a cupcake should have.

It was tough to find a bakery who does dairy and gluten free cupcakes, but I sure am glad that I found Cupcakes Squared! I did a half dozen of the dairy/​gluten free chocolate cupcakes, and they were absolutely delicious! (I couldn’t believe they had multiple flavors that could be gluten/​dairy free!) The guest of honor was touched that she was able to eat them due to her restrictions, and everyone else enjoyed them too. Definitely will be going back!

Best cupcakes ever. So many flavors it was hard to choose which one to pick. I tried the Salted Carmel and it was awesome. The staff are very friendly and helpful. I’ll come back for sure.

Freaking amazing cupcakes!!! They made our wedding amazing and the compliments did not end with people thrilled over being served a variety of delicious little morsels. They came and did all the setup with a beautiful stand and arranged the cupcakes so that they looked wonderful.
It’s also extremely affordable and not nearly as steep as the cost of getting a beautiful but unsatisfactory cake made with ingredients that are bad for you.

I really wanted to like this place, I really did. The staff was really friendly and personable and the cupcake flavors sounded delicious but I found that my cupcake lacked flavor and was kind of dry… I ordered the Hawaiian sounding one, loki, leki, something… anyway, it was good but not great. However my friend loved hers, so maybe I’m just weird. They do sell mini cupcakes, which I appreciate. They also have little baby Russian tea cakes which were delicious. I wouldn’t be opposed to going back, but I would try a different flavor.

I ordered some gluten free cupcakes for my daughter’s wedding to supplement to regular desserts. The cupcakes were so moist and tasty that the guests, even the ones who are not gluten sensitive, ate them all! The gluten free cupcakes are the best I’ve tasted.

I consider myself a cupcake enthusiast. I have tried cupcakes squared before and some flavors are hit or miss. I stopped in one afternoon and the lady that helped me was very sweet. I couldn’t decide between two flavors so she gave me one for free. But I didn’t think the cupcakes were that great I mainly judge based on how good the frosting is and the frosting tasted like pure butter. My boyfriend agreed as well.

Wowza! My pedi place is next door and I’ve never walked until today. Yummy! I tried a coconut lime one, loved the frosting but didn’t have much of a coconut taste just the frosting but none the less it was perfectly moist. Then I tried the pomegranate pistachio one. OMG! YES! YES! YES! So flipping yummy. They weren’t overly sweet just perfect. Both very moist. I don’t like cupcakes that once you stick a fork in it, it falls apart. I had the mini cakes $ 2 each which isn’t bad at all.
Only downfall is they didn’t have many options. The only had two big cupcake flavors. The mini they had a few flavors. I’ll try them again in two weeks.

I first learned about Cupcakes Squared when I was a «Bride To Be», in despair! I didn’t want the traditional tiered cake, I wanted different options for dessert at my wedding. When Google found this place for me I gave them a call, explained my situation and I must’ve sounded very anxious that the lovely lady asked me to come over for a tasting.
I rushed there as fast as my jeep could take me.
Long story short, they were wonderful to work with, gave me a few cupcakes to take home to sample with my soon to be husband … The now husband is not a big dessert person but we both loved the Lilikoi and the strawberry. We made the contract, I rented a cupcake structure for $ 40-​$ 50 and they delivered and assembled the cupcakes for me.
When I put my order they told me the «bride and groom» cake was on them. Basically it’s 4 regular sized cupcakes assembled together in a shape of a mini cake.
Our wedding was in August, hot as hell and the cupcakes held their flavor and shape.
Everyone loved them, so much I didn’t even hear to have one :(
I went two days later to return the cupcakes stand I had rented from them and when she asked how it all went, once I mentioned I didn’t even get a cupcake she boxed two of them for me!!!
I love how moist and fluffy the cupcakes are, they are in a shape of a square duhh and they offer gluten free options as well.
Mainly people come to buy and take out, not really any room for sit down. But plenty of parking spots!
Prices for cupcakes may be a little steep, but in my opinion waaaay better than Sprinkles Cupcakes.

Cupcake Squared has a really nice selection of squared cupcakes. Who doesn’t love a good Cupcake? Really!
I first tasted them a few years back and loved the Lilikoi and Strawberry cupcake soooo much I had a dessert table with over 60 of their delicious cupcakes.
This place is great for wedding, parties or any special event you might to throw. They offer many different cupcake tier stands that you may rent and if it’s for a wedding you get a free cutting cake (actually like 4 regular cupcakes together) that goes on the top of the tier.
They offer 2 sizes, the mini is about ¼ of the size of the regular cupcake but they’re equally delicious.
Now this are not cheap cupcakes, expect to pay around $ 3.50 to $ 3.75 per reg size cupcake.
You can always expect great service and beautiful and really moist cupcakes every time.
They do offer plenty of parking.
Trust me, try the Lilikoi (passion fruit).

This review is long over due. I support small businesses and this is the reason why I gave this bakery several chances to redeem themselves. These dry cupcakes are not cheap. Cupcakes look good but they are very dry and the baking is not consistent.
I spent $ 46 for 24 mini cupcakes and it was not worth it! I called in the order and Robin the owner picked an assortment of flavors. She was about to close early for Xmas eve and must sold me some mini mini cupcakes because the cupcakes were not the same size. Check out my pics. I was beyond disappointed and will not be back to give this place my $$$!

I was craving something sweet so we stopped by and were amazed by the beautiful display of cupcakes. I am eating the black and white cupcake and it is the best cupcake I’ve ever had in my life. My husband was asked if he was in the military and she gave us a free cupcake! We love supporting local businesses especially ones that support military families. Can’t wait to go back soon!

Great presentation and packaging. The chocolate cupcake is nothing special to rave about. Pretty meh.

I needed vegan, gluten free cupcakes for guests at my wedding reception, and Cupcakes Squared is the only place in San Diego that was able to accommodate this request. In fact, most bakeries seemed put off by my request (both vegan AND gluten free???) when I was calling around, so I hope this review is helpful to others!
They nailed it! I am neither vegan, nor gluten free, and I thought the red velvet cupcakes were fantastic. My vegan/​gluten free guests were thrilled to have a delicious dessert they could eat, and they raved about them. I highly recommend you check them out!!!

I love a GOOD cupcake, and this little place surly hit my sweet tooth spot.
After exchanging pleasantries with the two nice employees that were present, I decided on the vanilla cupcake with butter cream frosting for $ 3.50. The square cupcake looked quite striking with it tall pillow of frosting and garnished with vanilla sprinkles, not to mention their designer square packaging (

The butter cream was lighter than I expected, but very good. It was smooth and creamy with a light butter flavor. It could of been a little sweeter. The best part of the cup cake was what lied underneath the cream. The cake portion was excellente! It had a golden firm crust, that when you broke through, it led you into a moist slightly dense center (
). The texture was wonderful in this cup cake. The balance between the crunchy exterior and soft center was king. Its flavor wasn’t to bad as well. It provided a hint of sweet vanilla and rich buttery flavor.
They also offer gluten free cupcakes (
) and cookie squares that come in a variety of flavors (
). Like I mentioned early, the two employees here were very friendly and also quite knowledgeable regarding their product.

Is it sill a cupcake if it’s square?
I really don’t know the answer to that question. Honestly, though, these cupcakes are just way too dainty. I feel like they are trying too hard to be different from the scores of other cupcakeries. It’s quite audacious to decide to make a square cupcake. Is that the best that can be done to distinguish yourself from the competition? Sure, unfurling each square side of the cupcake individually before eating it is a new experience, but I don’t want to take the time to unfurl four separate portions of the cupcake. I want to unfurl it all at once and shove the damn thing in my mouth. The arrogance continues with the pretentious box the cakes are packed in. No wonder each cupcake has nearly a $ 4 price tag; the elegance they’re mired in is costly.
The dilemma continues. Once you take the time to unfurl the cupcake, you almost feel guilty eating it. It’s just too perfect looking. With its precise square edges and the thoughtfully-​placed dollop of frosting, its innocence, purity, and beauty is taken away with one penetration of the fork. I just don’t want that on my conscience.
I sampled the S’mores and Vanilla. What impressed me the most about these cupcakes was the actual cake portion. The cake has a nice density to it, not fluffy and light, and they are rich with flavor. The flavor of the vanilla shined, and I adored the chocolate chips and graham cracker flavor in the S’mores. The frosting, however, needs work. I felt that it was too velvety and didn’t really taste like buttercream. In fact, it almost had the texture of what a cream cheese frosting would taste like, sans the cream cheese. I’m the type of person that likes to taste the sugar crystals in my frosting.
Overall, Cupcakes Squared puts out an «A-​OK» cupcake. Someone was sweet and thoughtful enough to buy them for me, and that, seriously, was the best part about eating them, knowing they were given to me with love. A little pricey, in my opinion. For my regular cupcake rotation, I’ll probably remain loyal to Babycakes where they just throw the damn things on a plate and give me a fork.

Me and the happy couple came in here looking for some wedding ideas. A little advice to the owner/​baker and the servers, when someone comes in and is inquiring about catering or making a large order, you may want to give them the time of day versus blowing them off. This is exactly what happened when we came in here one Saturday afternoon.
I am a sucker for chocolate and l really wanted to like this place. I loved the mission statement. I loved the décor. I loved the vanilla bean water. The brunch menu looked fantastic BUT the customer service was the real turn off.
Nevertheless, we ordered a few cupcakes just to check this place off the list.

Boy were these rich and dense!?! A gut buster and a diabetic nightmare!
They stay true to the formula of happiness: Butter, sugar and chocolate however I feel that there was something missing from them. Calling them cupcakes are a reach, they were so heavy you could shatter a window with these bad boys. They are more like a gigantic truffle/​brownie. Ok Ok that’s a bit of an exaggeration but real talk they were a little heavy for my taste. I love getting chocolate wasted so it wasn’t a total deal breaker for me.
All and all they were decent and could have been a 4* mark but the customer service was a real turn off…
Maybe it’s improved since my visit i dunno. Just putting it out there…
