Emerald City Academy of Rhythmic Gymnastics

My daughter is 5 years old. She used to go to YMCA’s artistic gymnastics and wanted to try rhythmic gymnastic so we found Emerald City.
Emerald City provides one free class before enrolling. My daughter tried and loved the coach so I signed her up. But when the first class began next week, my daughter was assigned to a different coach. I was told she is old enough to upper level and it’s ok to choose either level. I’m happy my little girl is old enough to try something new, so I encouraged her to the upper level.
However, I found some problems soon.
First, the class is big.
There is 1 coach in each level. There are 5 to 7 kids in level 1, which is good (and which is what we experienced in the trial lesson), but 10 or more kids in level 2. The coach is nice and busy, but kids in level 2 usually idle.
Second, the coaches come and go.
My daughter has 3 different coaches in 8 classes.
After several weeks hard trials, my daughter told me she is not happy in level 2. She wants to go back to level 1. But the request is refused when I asked for it. So we quit.
Emerald City provides serious programs for girls with passion for rhythmic gymnastics, but probably not for beginners.

This program offers a serious and fun approach to rhythmic gymnastics in a supportive environment with dedicated coaches and many classes throughout the week as well as summer camps. It has been great for my daughter to learn conditioning, flexibility and discipline. It has been a joy to watch her master new challenges and grow stronger and more flexible. She has made friends with the other girls there and grown more confident in her abilities. She started there at age 7 and I wish I had known about the school earlier, as the very young girls (age 3?) seem to love it too. The classes above beginning level are three hours long. It’s a big commitment but it’s worth it. I also like the fact that they teach the girls about health and choosing healthy snacks.

I think it’s about time I give props where they are due.
My daughters have been involved with Emerald City now since 2010. When we got started there were about 40 – 50 girls of varying experience levels and a few coaches. Now, there are more than 100 girls of varying levels, a dozen world class coaches, and qualified judges associated with the program.
The teams are very involved from recreational level to the Olympic hopeful. They operate out of multiple locations in SD county from 4S Ranch, Miramar College, Alliant University, and even Point Loma.
The directors of the programs are involved, accommodating, fair and truly care about the girls, the development of their talents, and the effectiveness of the program.
If you want your daughters to be strong, graceful, flexible and athletic; give this program a shot. They effectively combine the grace of Ballet, with the strength and flexibility of Gymnastics. The program teaches coordination and confidence along with the beauty of the sport.
