The Empowering Spirits Foundation, Inc. (ESF), a national 501©(3) non-​profit, is a non-​partisan civil rights organization working to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) equality through community service activities. Since its inception ESF has been taking the struggle for LGBT equality into the next era by fostering non-​confrontational dialogue with individuals and institutions that may have not previously supported LGBT populations. Instead of attempting to change laws ESF strives to change the hearts and minds of those who are generally ignored by existing LGBT organizations.

History

Established in 2008.

The Empowering Spirits Foundation was founded days after the passage of Proposition 8, the measure which made same-​sex marriage illegal in the state of California. A. Latham Staples, founder of ESF felt the need to reach out to individuals who didn’t know enough about gays or had misinformation. ESF was formed to take the struggle for LGBT equality into the next era, by fostering non-​confrontational dialogue with individuals and institutions that previously did not support the LGBT population. Instead of changing the laws, ESF is striving to change the hearts and minds of the voters that are ignored by LGBT organizations. Research shows that interaction with even one LGBT individual increases the willingness of non-​LGBT individuals to favor equal rights.
